The design of the massing supports the first definition, as four different geometries were manipulated and joined together to create one new whole. The layout of the interior and the programs are in line with the second definition, in that the program for each room is split up by the medium in which science fiction is portrayed, where each medium is adjacent to another medium that is relevant. For example, the theater is adjacent to the television room, the music room, and the film room. These programs then ultimately make up science fiction as a whole.

ABSTRACT ITERATION STUDY

This project called for an apartment complex for the eldery (55+) with a mixed-use development. It is located in Cohoes, NY and serves as a gateway to the waterfront. It is unique as each unit is essentially a single storey house, held together by a skeleton-like superstructure. The first definition is represented through the physical design of the building, as it seeks to reveal the interior of a typical apartment. Unlike most apartments where everything is hidden from the exterior, the design of this complex lets a lot of natural light shine through each unit and accentuates the sense of openness while still preserving privacy within the residents. The second definition comes into play with the mixed-use development, which is a cultural arts center where people from all backgrounds and ethnicities can share, teach and “expose” their traditions and cultures. Because 95% of Cohoes is people of white backgrounds, it would be new and enlightening, shining light onto other demographics. All residents are exposed to these spaces as they hold the main passageway to their units. Additionally, there are two stairways that “intrude” into their hallways, acting as public galleries that spiral towards the roof where there is access to the beautiful view of the water.

WELCOME TO THE NEW AMERICAN DREAM BETWEEN ALASKA AND HAWAII, N. PACIFIC OCEAN America is seen as a very busy yet beautiful country full of fun and riches. People usually refer to how America is portrayed on television and film, most of which are made by hand in studios or graphically through the computer. This “fakeness” bleeds back into American architecture, as we can see in cities like NYC and Troy, where only the front of buildings are decorated or painted and the sides are neglected.

In hopes of revealing this “truth”, the island is advertised as a place of opportunity and wealth for all American citizens. Hundreds of people come to the island and see that it’s a place of enjoyment and prosperity - at least at first glance. However, they begin to realize the reality of this island. All things are set up as advertisements; all things are set up to make you spend money like banks, bars, shopping malls, restaurants, casinos, and hotels. The architecture of this island revolves around the idea of fake. Just like how Las Vegas has a miniature NYC, all the buildings of this island were formed with different iterations of existing famous American buildings and building footprints.

This is a personal project as my family came from Korea, in hopes of achievinging the American Dream: a better life. Unfortunately, this dream wasn’t attainable, no matter how hard my parents worked.

There seems to be a typical set of jobs that are quote on quote fit for immigrants, such as nail or hair salons, convenience stores, serving food, etc. I am not only speaking for my own family but for many of my friends and their families who also came to America in search for a better life.
