-EXECUTIVE LETTERIn t e r s t e l l a r Welcome everyone to Foundations Choreography’s Fall 2023 Exhibition: Eclipse! Throughout the past year, our dancers soared to Unwavering Heights, building off the energy, effort and passion of our amazing leadership. But just because we’re at the top does not mean our journey ends. Entering the next chapter, we now go Interstellar, to the galaxies and beyond. We now embark on a journey to reach for the stars, delving into our past and imagining our future, excelling together in our endeavors of change, reaching into uncharted territory.

After we pondered, looking up at the stars, we envisioned central goals to work towards throughout the year: dance education and history, reaching to a wider population of individuals passionate about dance, and balancing commitments with FC. We want to everyone to enjoy the Foundations experience to the best of their ability.

We could not help but feel proud of how far our dancers and leadership has come. We could not be more appreciative of our amazing dance and administrative leadership team who have taken our efforts in stride and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that everyone feels the immense love and support of the Foundations community.

We are elated for you to see and celebrate the culmination of all the dedication and commitment that our teams exhibited throughout the quarter! Although we’ll only see them as part of their team, every individual that graces the stage has come from their own story as a dancer, forming their own unique star in the larger constellation of Foundations. An eclipse is an ephemeral event where two celestial bodies converge. During this momentous night, we’ll witness our two teams perform on one stage. We guarantee that you’ll be a little “delulu” over their dance moves. Take it from us; they “ate” it up in Lot 8, and they’ll do it again tonight onstage!

-EVENTS LETTEREc l ip s e Good evening, Welcome to Eclipse, our Fall 2023 Showcase! Much like the awe-inspiring moment when the moon briefly obscures the sun, Eclipse represents a powerful symbol of transformation and renewal. It’s the celestial spectacle that r eminds us of the endless possibilities and new beginnings. As our first showcase of the year, Eclipse demonstrates the mystery of celestial beings being masked, waiting to be uncovered.

Last Spring, we were able to provide a platform for dancers (old and new) to take their final steps in their dance journey as they ascended to new heights and cultivated their new ZENITHs. This quarter, we chose Eclipse in accordance with this year’s theme: Interstellar. Throughout this year, we not only want to push our fellow dancers to reach their true potential but we also want to inform them that they should reach for the stars as there is no limit to what they can achieve. We begin with Eclipse in order to uplift our performers with dance fundamentals before they embark on the tumultuous journey ahead of them.

Tonight’s showcase is the product of a quarter’s worth of planning and effort on the part of not only the Events Committee but also the entirety of Foundations Choreography’s Leadership. We would like to thank Admin Lship, Dance Lship, our executive board, and of course, all of our amazing dancers for helping us make this event possible. Most importantly, we hope that the appreciation, love, and utmost respect for dance shines through all our diverse performances and performers. To our lovely audience, whether this is your first showcase or your twenty-first, we want to sincerely thank you for joining us on this journey with Foundations Choreography.

We hope that the appreciation and love for the art of dance will continue to fuel and inspire all of you this evening. As this extraordinary evening comes to a close and marks the beginning of an interstellar journey, we hope that everyone who has been a part of Eclipse will carry the spirit of transformation forward while remaining grateful to those who built your foundation.

While looking for a space at UCLA where I could learn how to dance as a beginner, I found Foundations Choreography and joined the summer before I was even a freshman. And boy, I was very grateful I did! Parking Lot 8 quickly became my second home where I met such a welcoming and tightknit community that only increasingly grew during my time at UCLA. Essentially, Foundations was the POLARIS in the night sky guiding me through college. Whether it was practicing the set all the way till midnight with No Corners Cut or laughing the night away at socials with our Tiny Brainz, the memories I made with my best of friends always (BOFA) will always remain in my heart.

Over the past four years, I have also had the honor of serving the organization not only as a captain twice but also as one of the Directors of Team Relations with my co-MC Vivian last year. It is so thrilling and relieving to see that Foundations continues to thrive with the amazing LSHIP that succeeded us and I can’t wait for all of you in the audience today to watch the showcase that they have been putting their hard work and efforts into! YUHH! JACKED up on excitement and their preparation all quarter long, our performers today are ready to show their JUICY-est performances so please get ready to scream out loud! Special thanks to all my past Foundations teams as well as my co-execs last year (nasthyluvi lives on!) for shaping me to be my best self today.

During my time in Foundations, I have had the privilege of captaining twice and serving as an executive member.

Foundations was where I found my first (and favorite) community at UCLA. When I first came in as an awkward, shy freshman, Foundations filled a VOID that I didn’t even realize was there until I found myself dancing in dusty parking lots, attending ice cream socials, and going to study sessions that featured a mixture of lofi and my teammates in order to grow our Tiny Brainz.

Over the years, I made many Best Of Friends Always (BOFA) who I still keep in contact with today and who I consider some of my closest friends. Thank you to everyone that I have had the privilege and joy to meet during my time in Foundations. I can safely say that I would not be who I am today if it wasn’t for all the happy memories, lessons, and people I met through this organization. To everyone performing today, all I have to say to you is ¡DÁLE!, I know you’ll leave us all Starstruck with your Juicy performances tonight. Special shoutout to my amazing 2022-2023 co-execs Nasser Elhajjaoui, Kathy Tran, and Luke Kyaw, our amazing leadership, my fellow BOFA dance lship, and all of my Foundations teams for being part of my life.

VSU Modern is a competitive dance team at UCLA established in 2006. NSU MOD ER N NSU Modern is one of UCLA’s premiere hip-hop dance teams and is home to some of the university’s most versatile and talented dancers. Its members are proud to represent the Nikkei Student Union, UCLA’s only Japanese American student association. Comprised of multi-ethnic Bruins from various dance backgrounds, NSU Modern strives to perform a variety of dance styles. Most recently, in June 2023, NSU Modern won 1st place at Battle Royale, an annual competition between all of the UCLA hip-hop dance teams.

Introducing TEAM DELULU <3, a Daniel Liu group of hard-working, passionate, talented, and amazing individuals who dedicated countless hours learning how to dance. Throughout this quarter, Eric Tran the members learned the fundamentals of hip hop, house, whacking, Giselle Villagomez and dance history. At the same time, the members also worked hard in Gladys Alejo participating in an open-style set while applying the fundamentals they Gladys Au were taught. Their passion for dance can be clearly seen in the amount of Ian Galvez dedication they have put into the set and learning on the block. Outside of Jared Christian Ramil dance practice, the members have also bonded through shopping sprees, Jetandrew Hum game nights, and late-night dinners. Over these past weeks together, we have built loving friendships and fun memories that will last a lifetime.

Jiin Kim Joaquin Gruver-Raymond Two delusional directors (Gladys Au and Jordan Rivero) created the team Jordan Rivero together with the goal of pushing the members to be delusional about Joseph Chung dance (and possibly other aspects of their lives). Thank you to silly goofy Julissa mendoza captains Celeste Knapp and Alen Huang for creating a friendly and warm Kenah Angeles environment for first-time dancers and ensuring the team didn’t descend Lance Giang into chaos. Huge thanks to Kosi Echesirim and Myles Mawa for taking the time to be our lovely guest choreographers and creating pieces that our Louis Wong members love!

Michael Shi Minh-Thi Le To Delulus, thank you so much for dedicating so much of your time this Norah Xu quarter to this team! All of you have grown so much as both people and Paola Gamboa dancers, and we could not be more proud of all the work you all have put Ryan Laureano in to reach this point. Dancing for the first time is such a scary experience, Sakshi Agte and you all have created such a safe space for each other to learn and grow as dancers. In the future, we hope you all can look back on this time we had Tyler Ng together as a fond memory and continue to dance together, whether it Yan Myo Aung be on a team or in a class or just for fun. As Team ATE (TEAMMATES), we’ve grown to push ourselves to just Ivy Zhang dance even if it may be humbling and completely new, because it’s fun! Through the set, the directors hope Kristen Ng to convey the message that no matter what stage you’re at of learning dance, you have the ability to share with others and enjoy dance as you are right now.
