My passion for architecture and design stems from my interest in Le Corbusier, “Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light.” I believe deisgn is a language spoken wherever creativity, passion and need exist.

I have been working at SITE- James Wines, LLC and I-Beam Design for the past 3 years.

In my capacity as designer and draftsperson, I developed schematic design drawings and renderings for a house in California and retail store in Japan, and worked with a team on construction drawings for an exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Museum, a winery in Brooklyn and the concept design of a children’s adventure park in Connecticut.

I have been responsible for curating and coordinating multiple exhibitions of SITE’s work and have been the chief archivist, in charge of cataloging all of the original watercolor renderings by James Wines and other archival material at SITE. Through this experience, and my studies at Pratt, I have developed excellent physical model-making, graphic design, 3D rendering and animating skills. I am extremely well organized and work very effectively with teams to meet all deadlines in a relaxed and coordinated manner.

Puzzling Immersion 4

Project: Advanced Design Research Studio| Professor Dwayne Olyer, Jenny Wu| Partner with KoFong Hsia Awards: Nominated for Climate Justice Award| Selected for Critic-at-Large Location: Taylor Yard River Park, Los Angeles Program: A New Natural History Museum Key Words: Puzzling, Rotation, Brutal, Interlocking

The project starts with a series of investigations in the Berrocal titled “Bijou”. From the formal aspect, the puzzle maintain a monolithic state but still carries certain tectonic qualities to the composition.

3d puzzle approach to the spatial arrangement of the proposal is another way to challenge the typology of the current inhabitability concept. The interlocking nature of the puzzle assembly puts an emphasis on the fact that nature itself is an integrated system of multiple interlocking networks. The intention is also revealed in the sectional quality of the proposal which consist of a multitude of possibilities through carefully arranged gaps and apertures that lead the landscape into the building. It also offers a few layers of accessibility allowing the public to experience the interiors while the building is closed.

Original Puzzle “Bijou”

From an aesthetic point of view, Bijou was built in a compositional approach, and at the same time is able to maintain the mechanical precision to a certain level.

The look is brutal and somewhat whimsical which we appreciate and intend to keep those qualities in our following abstraction.

The key element we took away from the Berrocal assembly process was the very first step, a distinct rotational movement.

The piece wraps around and extends to reach the other side of the mass. The rotation is an important anchor to the general assembly.

The intention of the transformation process is to break down the monolithic state of the original Berrocal and brings in more of the tectonic quality to the puzzle. Each of them has their unique contribution to the success of the final puzzle assembly. Some of the instruments are wrapping around and latching on to the bigger mass to form the assembly. Other parts are essential to secure the locking operation.

The final transformation remains the original assembly idea from the Berrocal, The puzzle relies on the tension between the masses and the instruments, and the tension among the instruments themselves to hold itself together as a completed piece.

2D Puzzle

6 The 2D puzzle can be described as two distinct systems. One is the masses which carries brutal aesthetic quality.

The other is the operational mechanism which forms another tectonic system that consists of smaller instruments which are rotating, latching and interweaving the project together. It expresses a very clear network. It has developed a structural language by having the backbone as the base, the masses in between and the keys on top to lock down the system.

The form of the masses remains a brutal aesthetic inherent from the Bijou and interacts with the structure in a various ways through elevation. the 2D puzzle becomes a guidance and explanation of how the system can be integrated with the site.

There are 3 keys which have been used in the system, plug-in, slide-in, and rotational keys to secure the system.

Through the physical model making, we experimented with materiality and also explored the possibility to integrate the 3d and 2d puzzles.

Detail

The stairs are the perfect starting point to think about the interscalibility of our puzzle assembly. They offer a middle ground bridging elements of various sizes, from the landscape to the building, from the building to the center showcase platform.

The assembly of the stairs carries on the system language of our 2D, having a backbone and the masses embedded into the structural network.

Project: Pratt GAUD Studio4| Professor Alexandra Barker| Partner with Pinar Araci Location: Manhattan, Pier 36 Program: locating a waste-to-energy, recycling, ferry terminal, and recreation/event space in Manhattan.

Key Words: Waste-to-Energy, Recycling, Urban Pattern, Machines, Green houses, Walking Path, Programs The project build on the top of the east river. It breaks down in different shapes of 32x32’ volumes, the size of the volumes related to the existing residential urban pattern. It break machines down in small volumes, making a space work both for human and machines. Having connection between interior and exterior spaces, allows people to come in and explore the machines.

There are different typology of green houses, the small rooms create micro environments for different plants and temperatures. In the diagram, the services area are for the truck to bring trash in, the site counties from the east park to the walking path.

TWIST TOWER Project: Pratt GAUD Studio 3 32

Location: 270 Flatbush Ave, Downtown Brooklyn Program: Mix Use High-rise Key Words: Irregularity, Roughness, Complexity

The tower uses a reflective remix mode –a term used to describe the creative reinterpretation of single-source material often with quite significant departure from the original. Certain adjectives adhere to the remix that are important to explore in this design: eclectic, discontinuous, irregular and rough. The remixed and the picturesque object share these defining qualities.

Since the emphasis in remix is on method, and the emphasis in picturesque is on esthetics, we will deploy remixing methods to speculate on the value of picturesque effects in the context of current postmodernist and the posthumanist discussions.

The Barcelona Pavilion within the Picturesque landscape tradition thus elicits speculation about both the building’s significance and the repressed role of the Picturesque in modernism.”

My goal is to take this titillating assertion to the next step, by teasing out the Picturesque in the pavilion to create new architectural designs that are abundantly picturesque.

Grasshopper Fractal Tests

Specifically, focus on two issues: First, hack into the formal implications of intense irregularity, roughness and complexity as defining qualities of the picturesque. Second, we will remix the picturesque relation between human and nature, one of ambivalence between immersion and distance, in a contemporary manner.

With a good century between the pavilion’s design and the present, Mies and us, it is possible to think of the new projects as 3rd generation offsprings. Where in the pavilion an 18th century picturesque is hidden under a 20th century Modernism, a 20th century Modernism may in turn be implicitly present in the 21st century picturesque expressions of the projects. A century, after all, that has started off with a renewed interest in the irregular, the eclectic and the artificial, in ways both akin to and entirely different from 18th century preoccupations with the same terms.

The house is in the mountain on the cliff edge. The entrance is located here. We want to create a home where spaces are not defined by specific functions. So shying away from labeling the spaces in our home as living room, kitchen and so on, we are creating various spaces, some open, some enclosed that allow for multitudes of functions.The space can be multifunctional. Throughout the day, it can be a space for preparing food, for studying, for people to gather or for various other purposes.

Throughout the home we introduced various openings to serve as skylights.

During the day, the incoming light will move through the space, creating different moods and defining the various functions.

We are proposing to place various projected screens throughout the house that can allow the inhabitants to talk to others within the home, as well as beyond.

Also it is important to note that at various moments, it allowed the natural texture of the mountain to come into our house.

Li shui City: Fractal Shan Shui Project: Lishui Future City Competition| Sulan Kolatan Kol/Mac Architecture + Design LLC With ARUP Awards: Best Creative Future Shanshui City Proposal award.

Location: Li Shui, China Through their embeddedness in nature/ culture pre-modern cities embodied shared narratives. Current urban development lacks this mythopoetic element and with it. Long -term meaningful bonds between city, infrastructure, society, nature and culture.

In drawing inspiration of Shan shui, our “ rurban” model for Lishui seeks to create new nature/culture narratives as vital bonds for our time. Shan shui is geological and fluvial, Shan is an idea about geological formation, while Shui is an idea about Fluvial formation. Like the shanshui painter, our proposal expresses these ideas in fractal form as geological layers and fluvial configurations. Our fractal method mirrors the principle defined in Shan forms are aggregated substance while Shui forms are defined voids. Also inspired by the painter’s ink, our Fractal method deposits variable densities and discontinuities to create interfaces between natural and man-made systems.

Noodle Building

The topic of the this studio is ever on the top of the black building.

Influencing by the form study, the topic of this studio can be explained by it’s literal meaning. In order to achieve the topic, The building has some yellow “noodle” dropped on the top of the matte black building. The building has the combination of real 3D openings versus 2D white outline as fake windows and doors, and real 3D noodle versus 2D noodle drawings.

The topic of the studio is “everything on top of itself”. Starting from different forms, the focus are: 1. Difference between matte and glossy 2. Fake 2d drawings and real 3D openings.

One set of the form is the combination between black matte surface and colorful glossy pieces. The other set is the conflicting between real openings and the fake openings with white outlines.
