A Yelm City Council member’s questions last month about the acquisition of 640 acres of Thurston Highlands property in December Yelm Council prompted an in- Member ternal memo to Joe DePinto the council due to “sensitivities” with the parties involved. Council member Joe DePinto questioned city administrator Michael Grayum about the property, which council was unaware the city was holding. The question, asked at random during council reports, prompted Grayum to issue an internal memo to council members explaining the situation with the property.

Yelm Police Officer Joel Turner checks out 5 year-old Tyler Nard’s own police vehicle during a noise complaint on July 4. Tyler later got to tour the police station and share his message that there are police officers out there who care about the people and communities they serve.
Five Year Old Tours Station, Made ‘Junior Officer’ BY MEGAN HANSEN mhansen@yelmonline.com
For 5-year-old Yelm resident Tyler Nard showing respect to those in uniform is a way of life. As long as he’s been able to walk and talk he’s been approaching everyone he sees in uniform and thanking them for their service, said Tyler’s mom
Amanda Davis. At 2 years old, Davis has photos of him approaching a veteran at McDonalds and shaking his hand. “He just put his toy down and walked over,” Davis said. Raised in a military home, Tyler has been taught from an early age about the important job and sacrifice those in uni-
form give. Tyler not only appreciates them, he wants to be like them. He has dreams of becoming a police officer, Davis said. Well Tyler’s one step closer to his dream after a July 4 noise complaint took an unexpected turn. Davis said a neighbor had called the police complaining
about fireworks thinking it was her family, but it wasn’t. Yelm Police Officer Joel Turner responded to the complaint. Tyler immediately ran up to Turner’s car and thanked him for his service, as he always does.

Large Hay Fire Closes Highway Just as Burn Ban Goes Into Effect BY DANIEL WARN dwarn@yelmonline.com
A large brush fire near the Yelm roundabout Tuesday afternoon shut down the highway for more than an hour as crews fought the blaze that threatened several homes and a businesses. The fire started in a field at AR Hay LLC. On their Facebook page, the business said it started from a lawnmower hitting a rock, which caused a spark. Austin Rogers, co-owner of AR Hay, said that the company would just have to keep moving forward after four acres of inventory burnt, totalling a $150,000 loss. Co-owner Chuck Rogers said that it only took the flames 20 minutes to get from one side of the field to the other.
