Unforgettable experiences on your doorstep
Unforgettable experiences on your doorstep
Welcome to our 2024–25 season of events.
This year our overarching theme will be Transformation. Inspired by the spiritual concepts that underpin the Seven Sayings, we will present seven concerts in which the messages of each Saying (Forgiveness, Salvation, Relationship, Abandonment, Distress, Triumph and Reunion) will be explored in depth. Beginning the season with Haydn’s masterpiece, The Seven Last Words of Christ, and finishing with MacMillan’s monumental Seven Last Words from the Cross, over the course of the year we will cover over 800 years of music. We hope you will join us for what promises to be a transformative experience, culminating in a reunion which will be both philosophical and literal, with some of the Yehudi Menuhin School’s illustrious former pupils returning to perform side by side with our current cohort.
Our longstanding tradition of showcasing the talents of our pupils continues with our Spotlight series, as well as a new series of Lunch + Listen events. Looking towards the summer, we invite you to enjoy our beautiful grounds as we present a series of picnic concerts, promising a true feast in every sense of the word.
With reunion at the forefront of our minds, our Inspire series will focus on former pupils of the Menuhin School who have become leading lights in the world of music. As part of this series, we will also get a chance to witness the exceptional talents of our teachers as they join forces for our Founder’s Day concert in April.
We will also be hosting three Talking Concerts, in which musical performances will be combined with experts discussing pedagogical and professional topics. Another new feature of our programming will be a collection of Concert Cafés: a chance to peek behind the scenes and see how the pieces of music we play come to life in a series of informal workshops and classes. We will also mark significant days each term with our Celebrate! series featuring activities, talks and evening concerts – from International Music Day to Jazz Day.
Throughout the last year, pupils of the School have been heavily involved in the planning of our season, and I’m proud and thankful for their imagination and initiative which burns brightly throughout the events in this brochure.
In many ways, the 2024–25 season is our most ambitious yet. With a wealth of special offers, and a wider array of styles than ever before, we hope to welcome you regularly for an exciting year of life-enriching, transformative music-making.

Join us on a musical pilgrimage as we chart our way through some of the deepest, most moving and most transformative works ever created.
Our biggest and boldest series to date, these concerts will feature pupils of the School, chamber groups, orchestras, visiting artists and members of the community.
Taken from the seven last expressions attributed to Christ, we will explore the Seven Sayings and spiritual concepts they represent through a musical lens. Content in this excitingly eclectic series will range from personal, secular accounts of these ideas – the transformational journey of Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage or the deep humanity of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor – to music richly imbued with a deep sense of faith in the breathtaking worlds of Bach and Arvo Pärt. Listen out for the musical links that will be woven through the concerts: reappearing medieval plainchants played on solo strings, a 13-part Renaissance canon representing Christ and the 12 disciples in our Christmas concert paired with Pärt’s Fratres for 12 cellos appearing at the end of the journey, and the distress of the Tchaikovsky Trio washed away with the brightness of his Serenade for Strings in the closing work of the season.
Framing the entire series, we will begin our first concert with Haydn’s Seven Last Words performed by two string quartets, before reuniting for James MacMillan’s own Seven Last Words for choir and strings (joined by members of the world-renowned Sansara choir) at the finale of our Summer Festival.
Centred around the idea of reunion, our concerts throughout the season will feature alumni of the School, with the final event culminating in a joint performance of pupils past and current.

Putting the talent and hard work of the School’s pupils in the spotlight, this series of showcase concerts sits at the very heart of our programme.
Experience the passion and dedication of our remarkable musicians in a thrilling series of concerts featuring solos – from major sonatas to the lightest of musical desserts – as well as chamber music and works by our first-study composers. Some concerts will also follow a loose theme; our third Spotlight, for example, will feature music related to winter and Christmas, while our final Spotlight will be presented by our pianists.
In line with the season’s theme around the ‘Seven Last Words’, each of these seven concerts will also feature one of ‘seven last works’. Written by composers at the pinnacle of their creative ability, these final works often convey a feeling of remarkable urgency and clarity, yet with an exquisite sense of lightness and simple sincerity.
Many of our concerts this year will be followed by postconcert receptions giving you a chance to meet some of the young musicians who have just performed.

Thursday 14 November 7.30pm
The sixth instalment of pianist Lucy Parham’s award-winning Composer Portraits series, I, Clara tells the extraordinary life story of Clara Wieck Schumann in her own words. Over a period of 60 years she gave over 1,500 concerts and determined the format of the kind of piano recital that is familiar to us today.
The narrative of I, Clara, drawn from letters and diaries, is interspersed with live performances of her works, and of music by Robert Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, Mendelssohn, and Chopin. The narrator for this performance is the acclaimed actress, Joanna David

Including: MacMillan Seven Last Words from the Cross · Pärt Fratres · Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings with Sansara, Jonathan Bloxham and alumni of the Yehudi Menuhin School
The culmination of a year-long journey, our Finale will bring together our Senior Orchestra and Chamber Choir with one of the world’s most ground-breaking choirs, the Sansara vocal collective, for James MacMillan’s towering achievement: Seven Last Words from the Cross. A work of dramatic scope and extraordinary emotional depth – and a musical depiction of our entire season in microcosm.
After an extended interval we will return with twelve of our cellists for the heart-wrenching beauty of Arvo Pärt’s Fratres.
To finish an unforgettable year of events, we have taken to heart Tchaikovsky’s note in the score for his Serenade: ‘The larger number of players in the string orchestra, the more this shall be in accordance with the author’s wishes.' With this in mind, we will be delighted to welcome on stage alumni of the Menuhin School to play alongside our Senior Orchestra conducted by Jonathan Bloxham as we fulfil the last of the Seven Sayings in an evening of reunion.
90 minutes plus a 60-minute interval
When our pupils are not on the Menuhin Hall stage, they can often be found in venues across the country, dazzling audiences with virtuosic solos, chamber music showcases and spellbinding orchestral concerts.

Lecture series by local societies have formed an integral part of the Menuhin Hall’s programme of events from the outset, with The Arts Society, East Surrey Area as well as the Claremont & Oxshott Arts Society and Surrey U3A all holding regular lectures here.
The auditorium’s acoustic is particularly well suited to lectures, offering two different screens for accompanying DVD/video footage, slide shows and presentations. Hearing loops are provided to assist the hard of hearing.
On a number of occasions lecture days will also feature short taster performances by The Menuhin School’s pupils.
Study days are open to all U3A members and guests are very welcome. The days start at 9.30am with registration and run from 10.00am to 4.00pm. We now offer hybrid events so that members who wish can view the study days from home. Including coffee / tea and biscuits, each event costs £12 for members, £12 for virtual attendance and £15 for guests. Prior booking is necessary and attendees should bring a packed lunch.

The History of Photography & Modern Developments
Presented by Roger Mendham, President of Surrey Photographic Association
From the very first, grainy image created in 1826, photography has evolved into a major art form, with image collections and exhibitions in leading Art Museums around the world. Developments in photography have posed challenges to more traditional art genres and it interesting to see how some of the great artists have adapted to using cameras as part of their work. The study day looks at photography over the past nearly 200 years, with the final session used to discuss and critique images submitted by members of the audience in advance.

Understanding Lowry: The Man, His Life & His Works
Presented by Maria Chester, Arts Society Lecturer & Berwick Visual Arts Researcher
In the early 1960s, an art critic wrote in the Manchester Guardian: “Lowry was to Manchester what Constable was to Essex”. Once he found his way in expressing his feelings, Laurence Stephen Lowry became the painter of industrial landscapes that surrounded him. After the 1960’s, he felt that what he saw as industrial landscape was disappearing and decided to paint just figures against a white background. This Study Day will explore his time, his life, his relationships, his style, his palette and his massive body of work.
Friday 21 February

Fine Art in the Garden
Timothy Walker
Timothy Walker is a lecturer and horticultural expert and a well-known and very entertaining speaker. He will give us two talks on how artists and gardeners paint with a similar colour palette, and how gardening has changed over the last 150 years, since colour was first introduced into the formal gardens of Europe. He explains how Gertrude Jekyll herself was inspired by JMW Turner, and how garden borders and contemporary paintings have evolved along similar lines. He shows us how the influences of Rothko and Pollock can be seen in the fluidity of planting in the modern gardens of today. Come and be inspired!
