Community Overlapping Clock

It is a sacred architecture that have a faith in food waste to strive for a new form of interaction between it and the people. The Soup Temple treats food as a high culture, which it is no longer playing a role to satisfy the people, but becoming a valuable need to be appreciated. Given Queen Victoria Market is the heart of food in Melbourne, the project hence will take the challenge of making the food waste in the market as a tool to achieve social euity through the provision of a sustainable environment.

Why it is a temple? Food scarcity is a raising issue in today’s world. Hence, people in developed countries like Australia, ought to feel the same respect towards food. Reconsidering the way we deal with food waste, instead of throwing it away, we can process them for a new purpose. The Soup Temple, is a complementary part to the existing Queen Victoria Market. It brings a new culture to a market with long history. It anchors a culture of togetherness, by implementing the self-sustaining practice amongst the community as a way to deal with the organic waste.We are now not simply buy what we want and leave. We stay here-spend the day with family at the community farming, exchange extra food at

the barter plaza, volunteer to give away excess food to the homeless and many other events. This project, hence provides the architectural spaces for these activities to happen. Like most of the temples, journey is an important part to bring people from mundane life to the sacred space. In my design, I create different experience, different intensities at all directions before reaching the main circular hall. Flexibility, Intersection and Experience are the best descriptions to the architecture of Soup Temple. It is not an exaggerated temple for people to admire its architecture, but rather humble, to shift people’s attention on what we should be concern-the reborn of food waste. The symbolic facade as the entrance. Simply as an envelope, this facade lacks of connection to the interior space of the market today.

Substantial barrier to separate the cemetery and the market in the past. Duplicate the arched brick wall to the glazed wall of the Soup Temple, with melted recycled aluminium cans as the “motif ”.

Corroded lanterns hung under the Sheds. Bringing this element along the cafe lane, a path traces back to the glorious moment of Queen Victoria Market.

Cast Iron column with molded capital that represents the architecture of 1900s. By blending the historical architecture element into the Soup Temple, it exemplify the story of QVM as part of the Temple.

Timber columns with lot numbering along the Sheds. Same material and purpose are used in my architecture, as separation between the unit containers .

Repetitive Shed’s pediment is one of the symbolic features of QVM.Whereas the Sheds are open space , the interior space of my Temple is glazed, with the colonnade of Anaerobic Digester Columns as the journey to the hall.

The Soup Temple reflects a sacred yet welcoming space for everyones. It is a space that encourages a mix of different events, as depicted in the perspective view. In term of architecture, melted aluminium cans are used as a decorative element at the glass facade. The colonnade of Anaerobic Digester’s columns covered by the recycled wood crates from the market. Before heading to the Soup Temple, there are pop-up cafes and public staircase along the colonnade.

The laneway with similar cast iron columns and lanterns aligned. Popup cafes and a balcony in the glasshouse are along the laneway. Silo, for instance, is one of the zero waste cafe which promote the same goal of the project, In brief, the renders illustrate an introduction of public space to attract the community for being part of a group to fight for zero food waste. In addition to the technical mechanism as a way to recycle the waste.

The solution came up with the concept of “R.A.W�. This provides the flexibility in the very basic stage, which is the ability to customize use of spaces, by the transformable floor structure. Other than the big mechanism to move the flooring platform for different stages of use, the overall interior are plain and simple, to ease the changes needed to be made by different residents.

Screenshot studio explores proposals that creating forms, spaces as a place or precinct where new transformations may occur. The studio re-focus on the design process and develop a design discourse taking into account notion of screen, motion and the urban spectacle.

In regards with the project, the exposing surface of the landscape contains an ecological system of planting trees, while its inner space together with the rigid blocks on the top are occupied for different public activities, such as restaurants, hotel rooms and facilities, greenhouse as well as shopping lots. In response to the site, my project attempts to avoid blockage of views and interaction between Melbourne CBD and Southbank. Hence, an extension of building in vertical direction is restricted by only up to three levels. There are cut-off points at ground level, for shorter circulation to cross between city edge to the river., and view towards both sides are enhanced with the increasing perimeter along the building. CIVIC PROJECT The exploded axonometric diagram depicts the overall circulation path with the transitional shift from public to private. Meanwhile it also brings a sense of “Controlled Explosion�, by illustrating there is no clear division of levels but rather the intersecting meeting points due to different level heights of blocks and the artificial landscape. CIVIC PROJECT Different spatial experience happens at ground floor, where there are changing spaces of exterior and interior spaces at the “melting artificial landscape� (with holes for columns that planting trees sit on top and skylights) as well as penetration of rigid blocks where main programs, such as restaurants, hotel lobby, gymnasium and so on are located.

Since the location of the site is hidden behind the landmark of Federation Square, my idea is to attract the public from the main streets in city. To do so, I place the pop-up market on the top of the artificial landscape, which will be easily spotted from far streetscape level. 13

The Co-Exist studio is an exercise in identifying the current development drivers shaping our city, by understanding the current reality and exporing alternatives.

In my part of individual project, the aim is to incorporate a mix of community activites, private properties and residential housing at this very visible point of the site, which is the substantial junction of the Haymarket roundabout. A mix of different activities in the mid-rise building manages to activate the building itself across every levels, by a thoughtful circulation mapping in vertical direction.

The site is a 10,000 sqm parcel of land bounded by Elizabeth, Peel , Queensberry and O’Connell Streets in North Melbourne. Followed up by the masterplan that presented in group, we individually developed a multi-residential project and a secondary, complimentary use of their “The Green Gem� is my proposed choice, within this masterplan. theme to implement the greenery and sustainability concept into the mixed-use development. Taking an embryo in a womb as my analogy to describe the relationship between the University of Melbourne and its archive, which plays an important role to protect historical records. Being explored with the futuristic approach, the profound building form shows the contrast of what the building preserves for and how it actually looks like.

Design a new building for the gallery that would be relocated to the junction of Albert Street and Sydney Road, Brunswick. I related Outre Gallery to a less formal, more casual kind of art exhibition. In my design, I used the idea of folding and pop-out paper card as my analogy. This is because pop-out design cards are the creative yet cheap form of art that always bring warmth to the receivers. I tried to used the layout of Outre Gallery as my starting point by folding them in several ways. This is the final outcome that led to my building design.

AIR STUDIO

To design an aesthetic sculpture that generates green energy which can attract the visitors to the site, Refshaleoen, Copenhagen. The design allows the visitors to experience the dynamic spatial interaction within the sculpture, where the flapping panels of the facade will generate wind energy. Not only that, the design also encourages the visitors to involve in generating energy by stepping on the piezo-flooring panels.

To design a boathouse which replaces the existing Studley Park Boathouse. The programs involve are the boat hiring area, restaurant, cafe and kiosk for public access.

Learning from Herzog and the Meuron, I focused on the materials used for facade treatment. Printed dots on the transparent glass wall is one of the inspired idea from the IKMZ BTU Cottbus. This pattern of seabed-like-dottings will form an interior of underwater feeling when the sunlight penetrates into it. In my design also emphasize the ramps for public access at the rooftop.

To design an area consists of reconcilation garden, unearthing colonisation discovery place., unearthing pre-colonial indigenous colonisation place, office, storage, a stage for performance as well as a sculpture at the assigned part of Herring Island.

Refer to the story of ‘ A Lifelong Colonist’, they used to describe the aborigines as ‘Shadow People’ due to their random appear and disappearance on the land. Thus, my design concept is based on this interrelationship between the colonist and the aborigine. The idea of unequal height of the wall of Aboriginal Discovery Centre in to create the feeling of the aboriginal people who try to hide from the colonist while at the same time desire to be able to

move freely on the land they used to own. On the other side, the curtain wall of upper floor of the Colonial Discovery Centre enables the visitors to look down at the pathway of the Aboriginal Discovery Centre. The Skylight will cause shadow forming of the visitors at the lower floor. Hence, The people will see the shadows formed from the upper Colonial Centre, which match with the concept of ‘Shadow People’.
