YEE SANG WONG COVER LETTER

2500 University Ave #433, Austin, TX, 78705 yeesang.wong@utexas.edu 11.4. 2015 OMA Office in Hong Kong 14 /F On Hing Building 1 On Hing terrace Central, Hong Kong I am a second year architecture student at the University of Texas at Austin in United States, and I am seeking a summer architecture internship with OMA office in Hong Kong because of their lead in the design of the Chu Hai College in Hong Kong. I am originally from Hong Kong, and throughout my life I have taken many walks and attended holiday events at this memorable and celebrated west coast of the New Territories . My current architecture studio is focused on urban design, and for me, I find the topic’s scope of architectural design influence on diverse citizens the most engaging subject I have encountered so far in architecture school. The past several weeks of research, mapping and planning in my studio have cultivated my understanding about how the design of a public facilities, such as the Chu Hai College of Higher Education, can foster the richness of a city such as Hong Kong. You will find I am an intern who yearns to learn because I have studied in Mainland China, Hong Kong, the UK, Canada and the United States, and I am a quadri-lingual speaker of Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Spanish. Furthermore, I have developed skills in urban research and analysis, and by the end of this semester I will have further knowledge about urban building strategies for designing relationships between various components for adaptation. I would be delighted to fly to Hong Kong for an interview after the end of this semester, May 19th. I am seeking an internship for the months of June, July and August. Attached is a PDF of my portfolio and resume, and I will follow up with you soon. Thank you for your careful consideration.

Sincerely, Yee Sang Wong 王義生 T 1.512.919.6048 E yeesang@utexas.edu

TRAVEL SKETCH - BRATISLAVA Individual travel sketch

Studio: Univeristy of Texas at Austin School of Architecture THE READING PAVILLIONS / 2014 Partner: Hannah Frossard Instructor: Larry Doll

INTERIOR PERSPECTIVE / Looking into the individual reading nooks from the public reading space.

TASK: A reading pavillion is to be designed for book lovers on the most busy comercial street in Austin, the South Congress Avenue.

PROBLEMS → SOLUTIONS: Analysis of site forces → cube diagrams. Organizational strategy and structural components → Literal translation from the cube diagrams. Loud noise on site → private reading cubes is sheltered and insulated by three existing trees.

01

CONCEPT DIAGRAM/ At human scale(left) and at the scale of the site.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM/ Put in site.

02

“Literal translation of diagrams create the natural fluidity of design process.

SECTION / The Hierachy of highly public to highly private programs(away from the street): the bookstore, the public reading space, and the individual reading nooks.

MODEL / The public space for reading out loud and discussions.

03

NOISE DIAGRAM / Darker red indicates higher noise level.

WIND MODEL / Darker green indicates higher wind velocity.

PLAN AND SITE PLAN / Red showing the high traffic on South Congress Avenue.

MODEL / The whole site.

Studio: Univeristy of Texas at Austin School of Architecture SCRUPULOUS URBANIZATION / 2015 Team: Kerry Frank, Maxwell Baird, Yee Sang Wong My role: Thinking and designing in plan and perspective views Instructor: Dean Almy, AIA, FFUD

TASK: Redevlopment of the Saltillo TOD (Transit-Oriented Development) at the intersection of inevitability of growth and possibility of better planning of the east Austin.

PROBLEMS + SOLUTIONS: 1. Significant raise in ensity→ Buildings go vertical when possible and reasonable. 2. Lack of public space → Introduction of pocket parks that offshoot from the current park development. 3. Lack of use of public transportation → provide infrastructure for urban light rail in future 4. Lack of walkability → develop a hierarchy of traffic: pedestrian, bicyclist, rail, bus, car. 5. Old infrastructural scar → Celebrate it by veiling the old rail with pedestrian and bicycle traffic. 6. Interstate-35 as a physical and psychological barrier → develop usable space underneath the highway.

05

SITE PLAN DIAGRAM / Highlighting areas of site that we proposed to modify and improve.

“inevitability of growth and possibility of better planning”

PROPOSED BUILDING ENVELOPES, CIRCULATIONS & PARKS / Cars, bikes, trains, pedestrian routes and public parks.

06

SECTIONS THROUGH OUR SITE / Focusing on walkways/streets/alleyway conditions, and suggested retail, housing and underground parkings.

Studio: Architectural Association of London STUMP -> HIKE-TECH / 2014 Team: Maria Freimann, Juhan Kangilaski, Caspar Schols My Role: Storyline creation and fabrication Instructor: Anna Czigler, Aude-Line Duliere, Suzi Pain

ISOLATION FROM THE CITY / Rendering with fabricated model.

TASK: Project Stump -> ? asked us to select our own abandoned structure, research, fabricate the original structure and propose occupation. We chose Watkin Tower north of London. This was a three-week project.

PROBLEMS → SOLUTIONS: Lack of completeness → create a story to reflect the fundamental and natural desire to survive, reproduce then proliferate. Lack of hiking locations within the city of London → Watkin Tower will be inhabited by nature lovers and hikers, hence the name Hike-tech. Hike-tech coinhabits with nature. Occupation → with modular prefabbed pieces of wood that hikers could find near the site, occupiers elongate the life span of this structure by introducing human maintenance. Our project is named Hike-tech to encourage people to hike and build. 09

CONCEPT COLLAGE / Coinhabitation with nature.

“Survive, reproduce, and then proliferate.”

MODEL CLOSE-UPS / hike and build. 10

FABRICATION / Used Walnut wood (similar to the strength to steel at its actual scale) to immitate the Victorian iron work of the original structure. 12

Studio: Univeristy of Texas at Austin School of Architecture THE PERFORMANCE VENUES / 2013 Instructor: J.P. Rysavy, Design Associate at SHoP Architects

This project was selected for the 2013 Design 1 Studio Design Excellence Award.

TASK: On an assigned lot in downtown Austin, design a performance venue that responds to the site’s urban conditions and a suitable choice of music genre.

PROBLEMS → SOLUTIONS: Polar conditions of the site as a result of being at a street corner → The design accomodates concurrent performance venues of both instrumental and popular music. Fixed programs are arranged along the surrounding buildings while the popular music venue is surrounded by the street’s hustle and bustle.

13

PERSPECTIVES/ Passge way (left) and the inside Auditorium viewing from the stage.

PERSPECTIVE / Exterior stage

14

SECTION (LEFT) AND PLAN (RIGHT) / Juxtaposing volumes of inside/outside corner of street

SECTION/ Looking north into concurrent performances

DAYLIGHT STUDY / Hall way looking east

CONCEPT MODEL / Overlay of volumes, approaching from northwest.

CONCEPT MODEL / Overlay of volumes, approaching from southwest.

16

Competition / International SUBFLUX / 2014 Team: Kristen Fulmer, William McCommon, Ellen Sampson My Role: Concept Drawing Instructor: Matt Fajkus, AIA

CONCEPT DRAWING / Section across a subway station.

TASK: CLUEcompetition 2015: Are indoor and outdoor lighting solutions so radically different? How could they be integrated into a single system? We are looking for smart, edgy, out of the box ideas that will redefine how these interfacing areas are experienced, perceived and used through light.

PROBLEMS → SOLUTIONS:

When commuting underground, users lack the ability to calibrate with time, orientation, and a relationship with the urban context above. → implementation of natural light. Implmentation of natural light → split-flaps that can either expose or shade incoming natural light. The natural light, or sunlight, reaches the underground tunnels through fiber-optic tubes. Disorienting sense → clacking of the traditional flip board to increase familiarity of train station. Increase expability of train → wall of split-flaps of the platform will flip intermittently, depending on the train’s arrival time.

17

A LONG WAIT FOR THE TRAIN / COOL LED LIGHT AT NIGHT There are few open apertures, indicating a longer wait for the next train. At night, light would be produced from LEDs due to the lack of sunlight above-ground.

“’space event’ contributes to users the richness and willingness to use the space”

IMMINENT TRAIN ARRIVAL / WARM MORNING SUN Apertures in the wall start to flip over revealing noon sunlight into the station via fiber optic cables. As the train nears, more and more openings reveal the natural light into the underground space.

TRAIN ARRIVAL / COOL EARLY AFTERNOON SUNLIGHT Most openings flip to their most translucent covering, revealing a flood of cool afternoon light into the subway. This glowing subway station indicates the train has arrived. When it departs, the openings will reset and continue the cycle as the next train nears.

18

Studio: Univeristy of Texas at Austin School of Architecture THE TUNNEL / 2014 Instructor: Kory Bieg, AIA

TASK:

Create a parametric design using any software, then fabricate it.

PHYSICAL MODEL / Looking into the tunnel.

PHYSICAL MODEL / Made with Plexi-glass.

19

SECTION / to show the sinuous heights experienced by kayakers.

PERSPECTIVE RENDERING / with 5’’ gap between the louvres. PLAN VIEW / Made in Revit

VARIABLES MANIPULATED / X, D1, D2.

PERSPECTIVE RENDERING / with 6’’ gap between the louvres.

CALCULATIONS / For individual louvres.

NÉPRAJZI MÚZEUM

INSPIRATION DIAGRAMS (left) AND SITE PLAN / Showing our desgin inspiration, the Denub river. One of my several main roles in this project.

TASK: Liget Budapest Museum of Ethnography asks firms around the world to bring the city and park of Városliget together.

PROBLEMS + SOLUTIONS: To link the city and the park of Városliget → flowing the public along the Dózsa György út through the procession of the building To evoke a sense of complexity of ethnography → use Debub river pattern as an organization strategy in plan.

21

THE CARVE OF DENUB RIVER / Renderings done by colleagues.

ELEVATIONS / At 1:500 scale.

INSPIRATINON DIAGRAM AND SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM BREAKDOWN 22
