Over the last five years, I have realized that being family is not just about blood, ancestry or sharing parents; working in unison to realize shared goals makes a strong family.
From different countries, different schools and diverse cultures, we found ourselves together at Mbarara University of Science and Technology to advance our career in saving lives and serving humanity.
It’s been a journey worth the celebrations; full of challenges and opportunities, but in this case what matters is the resilience till the end.
Congratulations !!! to us who have made it to the end of the five years’ intense struggle. To our colleagues who encountered obstacles along the way, we pray that you also finally make it to the promised land, better late than never.
We are very grateful to the university administration, our faculty, our mentors and everyone else who was directly or indirectly involved in our learning, you are the reason why we are celebrating these achievements. Our dear parents, guardians, loved ones and the government, we appreciate the support all through our academic journey.
To my fellows, now doctors, it’s been my pleasure running this race with you. Don Shula once said “the one thing that I know is that you win with good people”, here we are, celebrating our victory as a team. We thank God for the great memories. I can only measure my success as a leader through the achievements of the people that I lead. Blessings follow you always.
Let’s go and transform lives. Our next obligation is to champion universal health coverage through direct service delivery, health research, advocacy and leadership. Dear all,
I am privileged to have served as the vice president of the cohort of 2021 doctors from MUST It was an honor meeting these vigilant, focused and gallant ladies and gentlemen.
The journey stretches back to 2016 when we entered the gates of Mbarara University of Science and Technology with great dreams and ambitions. We were young and full of positive energy. As we grew older, we became wiser and lived life with more experience and caution. We encountered hardships but God saw us through
There were moments in our lives that couldn’t go unnoticed as we pursued our goals with a lot of passion. For example, in the preclinical years, we had many things to fix, you read something but out of the reading room and it’s forgotten, but guess what we still made it.
Moments came in our clinical years when you had to do a whole night call in obstetrics and gynecology but you still had to fulfill your day’s roles of attending your lectures and tutorials. This could not be achieved by light hearted individuals. We were heavily hit by COVID-19 but we remained focused.
One thing that stood out for this group of doctors, is learning how to look out for each other especially when things were running out of hand.
More thanks goes to our great class president Dr Arinaitwe Innocent, this doctor was so exceptional in how he handled the class issues, everything settled with his presence.Thank you so much doctor.
Words cannot describe exactly what I would have talked about this cohort of doctors,but it stands out,if we continue with such energy, not even the sky’s the limit, we are headed for greatness.

Dear Friends,
It’s an honor, a privilege and blessing to connect again. So has it been studying with you, sharing ideas, moments and essentially learning from you.
A reflection into our years in medical school from August, 2016 to October 2021 brings mixed emotions. Joys of the wonderful mo ments we had and the pain for the friends we miss now that we are out of school.
As one man asked, ``Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back everything is different?”
Lost in meditation, I learned that time flies like a thief in the night, every minute lost cannot be gained and everyday should be lived like it’s our last.
Being the lead editor of this class book, I am excited by every moment whose excerpt is represented here. Everyone has had a wonderful life at campus and all the memories couldn’t be represented here. Those reflected however are will always put us together.
Being a printer man, am fond with paper and have appreciated its power. This is what inspired me to put excerpts of our memories on paper to preserve them in the test of time.
A photographic summary of our existence in medical school where regardless of our indifferences, we will always be friends in these pages. Always together and smiling.
It’s a publication by which we can stand and say we were there, we lived and loved, did and we’ve done great works in our capacities to transform MUST and the society.
We can’t say we are the best there was because medical school produced doctors long before we were born and will produce more after us, but between 2016 and 2021, Mbarara University medical school made the best of us.
Though there were delays and extensions, in our stay in MUST because of COVID-19, our unwavering zeal lived on and we made it through.
To our teachers, on whose great shoulders we stand. We say thank you. Your skills and training opened our minds to a world of possibilities. Our imaginations became boundless and limitless.
We vow to contribute and increase on the gigantic menu of knowl edge from which you served us and to teach those who will come after us like we were taught.
To the university administration and support staff, though your work was in the background, you were the lights that electrified the stages on which we performed. We cannot discuss our excellence and success without. Thank you and well done.
Our parents, guardians and sponsors who have been up to the tough task in all seasons, all the time ensuring that we finish what we was started.
No words of thanks are enough to compensate them for what they have gone through to get us to where we are. We dedicate them yo God to protect them and give them long lives.
Including the taxpayerwho ensured that the government sponsored student was comfortable to learn
Last but not least, we don’t forget to thank ourselves for enduring the demanding times of assignments, exams, hospital, calls, percussion, reading. Our efforts have surely paid off. Even in the trials of COVID-19 when the course seemed endless, we withstood because that’s what great people, they don’t give up.
With God, finely tuned teachers and a great support team, the production line was flawless and so is the product. We are borderless community doctors, ready to serve at all frontiers and transform our nations and the world.
And as we took the oath on our graduation day promising to be our very best, the best we shall be.
It’s our time to shine and make history. So ladies and gentlemen, shall we…….?

Having gone this far down the memory lane, let us turn to the future for what it holds.
I believe we all have a major role to play in the transformation of health in Uganda and Africa through quality research, inclusive leadership and innovation bring add our health situation
In the book “African Health Leaders” Prof. Francis Omaswa identifies five factors crippling Africa’s systems;
1. High levels of poverty among her people: with poverty figures according to the World Bank ranging from 30% to 70%.
2. High population growth that is applying extreme pressure on social services with health facilities overflowing with patients with implications for access to basic healthcare.
3. The population structure with 50% being below the age of 15 years represents a high dependency ratio. All educated Africans with jobs feel this very much, as we do not only take care of our immediate families but are also expected to support lots of members of the extended family with paying school fees, marriages, and funerals.
4. A culture of tolerance of the unacceptable has become normal; the demand side for quality services is weak, which in itself perpetuates the status quo. When things go wrong, the population and their leaders just shrug their shoulders and say ‘What do you expect? This is Africa’.
5. The dependency of African countries on outsiders for development assistance and, worse still, for solutions, to provide essential social services, including healthcare to their populations.
With that background, the work ahead of us is temendous yet we shall not shy away but stand in affirmation that it is our time to solve these problems.
That is why we started www.heart-to-hearthealth.com an organisation with solutions to the social determinants of health at the center.
We created a platform disseminate quality information about the different health challenges that our people face while attaching solutions.
We believe that explaining these health challenges and their impact will inspire discussion, innovation, and involvement of people from all walks of life to solution generationfor health.
However, these discussions cannot happened fruitfully unless
they are led by people who are deeply knowlegeable about health challenges our people face in our hospitals and watch as social limitations make us incompetent in front of our clients.
That is where you and me come in, writing about health situations in our communities with some solutions that we could embrace.
Research is good but if left in online journals yet the research participants that you disturbed filling questionnaires are still struggling with the same problems you sought to publish about is like lighting a candle and putting it under the bed. No impact to the society. Doing and writing about it in simple english that the policy makers can understand is alot more impactful.
The platform is therefore available for us to write about our research, innovations, and opinions about health in Uganda and Africa.
In the future, we hope to transform health through sponsoring ground breaking research and innovations for health. As we inspire ownership of our health, weaning ourself off foreign aid breast milk, we hope that we shall support one another towards a better health.
You are therefore invited to join us as editor, content creator, speaker, research, innovator, social media expert, photographer. All the skills you have, we need in transforming the systems that we shall one day ourselves or loved ones will seek health care
