FOREWORD

A WORD FROM THE YEARBOOK COMMITTEE Hello and Welcome to this year's yearbook,

I think we can all agree that this academic year 2020/21 has been and probably will be one of the most challenging and unpredictable years. The curfew, distance, and online classes have surely not made it easy for us.

The COVID-19 pandemic really did force us to turn online and embrace what digital University had to offer.

However, staying at home and watching the world go about did not stop us from experiencing other exciting events. One of those was welcoming the new Class of 2023.

Over 150 of us are now resided in Frascati, the Student housing every first-year has moved in. Through the introduction week we were able to invite them with open arms to our UCG-community.

As a result of us being limited to the four walls of our rooms and apartments and not being able to enjoy the outside as we onced used to, the yearbook committee decided to go for a botanical theme. Our aim is to bring back some nostalgia, as well as excitement for the seasons ahead, the fresh air and the

reduction of the restriction to fully allow us to experience this nature.

Due to this year's limitations in physical contact we had some difficulties assembling a team, motivating students to participate, and gathering all the necessary information to publish this book. However, as you can see, we worked exceptionally hard to make it reality, with all our teachers, students and staff members being represented. We have now created a fun little memory of you, your student life, and your friends. We hope you will hold on to it and look back at these memories in the future.

We really hope we have captured every major moment that defined your and our life this year. Maybe, when looking back you will laugh at our little adventures to the Hoornsemeer, skating on the canals or the Crazy88 online party. Most importantly, we thank you for contributing to this challenging but wonderful year and welcome many more great memories that will come.

A WORD FROM

THE DEAN OF UCG

“Caerus has asked me to reflect on the past year - a year that has been a rather strange one, to say the least. There are many. possible observations that can be made about 2020, but I would like to share only a few with you. Looking back, I am astonished at how the meaning of a word can change throughout a year.

When I came across the word ‘corona’ in 2019, it was about a circle of professors who were supposed to ask questions at a PhD defense and whether they would show up.

Whoever talks about ‘corona’ today, thinks of the virus Covid-19 – a virus that has made the world come to a standstill. It has dealt a devastating blow to the global economy – think of public transport, aviation, shops and pubs that may not welcome customers anymore. It has hit the healthcare system particularly hard: exhausted health care workers, operations and treatments suspended due to insufficient capacity. The social lives of us all have broken down.

You find the more abstract, global impact in the newspaper or on the internet. But the virus affects each and single one of us in a very concrete way. All around us we see the virus wreak havoc – not only in the form of illness. Students have to attend lectures online. Lecturers are forced to teach online. Both groups miss the personal interaction with each other. The very foundation of our UCG community threatens to deteriorate.

However, thanks to the commitment, perseverance and understanding of students and lecturers alike, our community is still alive and kicking. I feel that difficult times bring us closer together in the long run. Because of the lockdown we were locked up in our own bubble. Personal contact with friends and family suddenly became extraordinary. Borders were closed, and we could no longer visit family and friends abroad. However, we adapted and made use of the opportunities that we still had – and we discovered new ones. It is clear that the word ‘corona’ got an entirely new meaning over the course of 2020.

For me, ‘corona’ is now about a pandemic.

The past year has made me realize that what I took for granted in 2019, has become precious or a source of insecurity. As soon as the strict measures we took to contain the pandemic are lifted, I hope that students and staff will come back together and meet in person, that we can expand and strengthen our UCG community. I am also looking forward to the moment when Caerus will finally be able to organize again gezellige (I challenge you to find a translation to our beautiful Dutch adjective) and inspiring activities, and, last but not least, that we can take that for granted again.”

THE CAERUS BOARD Dear Caerus members,

What a crazy year it has been…

That you had to read that sentence atop of so many emails this year.

We as the board of your beloved Study Association, Caerus, wanted to recap the interestingly difficult but also very fun year for you, because despite the fact that we were not able to organise physical events during the Corona crisis, Caerus has still made great progress.

This year two new committees were established called FutUra and AmiCaerus. While the former focuses on career aspects and personal development, the latter focuses on personal connections and friendship.

In line with that, AmiCaerus and Civitas collaborated on sending out tulips for Valentine’s Day and distributing daffodils for Easter. Besides the Fresh Meal Box events set up by Civitas, UCGO has been organising some Among Us nights and SOC provided our members with a lot of fun with their Crazy 88 events.

Further, Caerus has been highly involved with the University College Student Representatives of the Netherlands through events such as the Voice of UCSRN and the UCSRN tournament. We have also been maintaining a great relationship with our UCSRN buddy, Study Association Atlantis from University College Twente.

Besides many other aspects, the Caerus Board has been focusing on environmental and sexual awareness.

We recently received the Green Office Green Subsidy to create a Caerus Garden and we also hope to get the Green Label for our association.

Also, we are supporting the initiative to create a safer environment and provide adequate sexual education in the next year of Caerus.

The work that normally no one sees is often the hardest, which has been the truth for further professionalising the association. Through modifying the Caerus Privacy Policy, thoroughly editing the Caerus Policy Manual and establishing a Code of Conduct.

When this yearbook publishes we will be in our last moments of being the Caerus Board. We wish the coming seventh Caerus Board the best of luck and are super excited about what's to come because we get there together!

What I am actually saying though, is that we would’ve been nowhere without Zoe, the greatest secretary Caerus will ever have known. Or without Eleni, who kept our money safe this year and brought it to numbers we have never seen before.

Julius and Eva, who have made the number of committees grow and created a new and better way to work together. Lastly, Geanne who confidently made pacts with companies and got the association the best partnership possible.

Here I, Birgit, am just to front that proudly presents all these amazing people and their hard work.

OUR CARETAKERS Dear students,

It has been a long and hard time being in the building with that you for many months.

Anja, Patrick and I (Hugo), miss your presence so much.

We know that is only temporary, but you guys make our work enjoyable and our work becomes almost meaningless when you are not in the building.

The things we miss the most are the events you organize, we miss giving you advice, and even yelling at you.

In short, we miss your presence and all the good things you do when you are here (but not the bad ones).

I hope you all riding this pandemic physically and mentally in good shape and if you need help, never be afraid to ask.

Don’t forget, we always here for you, and we will help you with a lot of happiness in our heart because the UCG is nothing without its students.

Keep doing the good things you have been doing and believe in yourself because we believe in you.

The Year in Review

The past year has brought new challenges and situations we had to face, not only academically but also globally.

2020 Since June 2020 our academic year has been influenced by buzzing news from all around the world.

Starting with the #BLM (Black Lives Matter movement after the deaths of George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, and Breonna Taylor, the world was introduced to equality and human rights movements that reached a global scale. The protests ranged from Atlanta, USA, to Europe and were followed by the rest of the world.

Shortly after, in July 2020, confederate statues were removed, due to their racist symbolism, a reminder of the American slavery history.

In August aggressive wildfires left the West Coast (mainly California) burned to the ground.

On the 4th of August, a massive explosion in Beirut killed over 190 individuals and left the city in ruins.

Over thousands were injured after a significant amount of ammonium nitrate, stored at the port of the capital, Lebanon, exploded. Until today over 300.000 people are left homeless.

Another news that blasted through the internet was the announcement of presidential-candidate Biden, choosing Kamala Harris as his running mate and Vice-President. With her African-Asian-American heritage, she was the first highestranking female official running for this position.

In November 2020, the world turned their heads towards the USA, as their remaining States counted the votes of their presidential election. Finally, on November 7th Joe Biden was named president-elect. This caused a national uprising, as Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol in Washington D.C., due to believed voting fraud.

On November 9th BioTech and Pfizer released their breakthrough in a potential COVID-19 vaccine, which was more than 90% effective. Shortly after countries began introducing the Vaccine separately.

2021 After a calmer New Years' eve than in the past years, the new year also brought a new strain.

In January 2021 a novel COVID strain was identified that was supposedly even more contagious than the initial strain. The new strain was first identified in travelers in a flight from Brazil to Japan.

After this new discovery and a rapid increase of COVID hospitalized patients the Netherlands introduced a three months long lockdown, with a curfew at 9 pm.

In April these measures were revoked and terraces and shops were able to open again for the 27th of April, Kingsday.

April 20, 2021 Minneapolis ex-police officer Derek Chauvin was put on trial. He was convicted on all charges, facing up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder on George Floyd, 25 years for third-degree murder, and up to 10 years for second-degree manslaughter.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict arose to new confrontation. Even though this conflict has been the most enduring, lasting almost 53 years, it has come to a new peak in May 2021. The crisis was marked by protests, rioting, and rocket attacks. After days of lasting disturbance in Jerusalem, a ceasefire attack resulted from an unresponded ultimatum given to Israel by the Hamas on the 10th of May. As a counterattack, Israel targeted the Gaza Strip, where the Palestinian Hamas resided. The damage on both sides (Gaza and Jerusalem) included destroyed medical care facilities, hospitals, and schools.

Due to the violent nature of this conflict, global solidarity protests for Palestine started to take place, demanding a free Palestine and an end to the conflict.

On May 22 the Eurovision Song Contest finals were hosted in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The overall winner of this contest was Maneskin, an Italian rock band, with their song Zitti e Buoni.

Finally, the European Championship was also won by the Italian football team.

Firstly we had some struggles getting the approval to book the accommodation due to the uncertain development of the Covid pandemic. We are happy that the university decided to take the risk of cancellation. And now we are looking forward to organizing activities at the camp on Schiermonnikoog and in Groningen itself. We are very motivated and try our best to make this introweek memorable :).

We have made it our goal to write about topics worth writing about and sharing these stories with the UCG community. This year we were not as active as we would have liked to be due to the pandemic. We normally take pictures of committee events, but due to obvious reasons that was not possible this year. We did organise a photo contest this year which was a lot of fun! We hope to take your amazing pictures again next year!

An Inspiring Personal Achievement We are (from left to right) Miranda, Julija, Francoise, and Marie. We are starting something called the "Sexual Wellness Education Initiative” and it is ultimately our goal to contribute to a healthy sexual environment for the students of UCG. SWEI will be emphasizing what consent means for this community. We will create resources and workshops for students to safely engage with topics such as consent, boundaries, sexual health, sexual identity, gender identity and pleasure. We aim to implement a sexual wellness curriculum and to create a sexpositive and informed student body.

EVENTS OF THE YEAR

Convocation Ceremony in the Martini Church Even with strict COVID-19 measures UCG was able to welcome all first year students of the class of 2023 at the Martini Church in Groningen.

Lake Trip in September

Many first years decided to drive to Hoornsemeer in October due to the warm and sunny weather, it was an enjoyable afternoon, allowing everyone to further meet each other.

Movie Nights in C3

During the first months of University, the C3 Unit hosted several Movie nights including a Harry Potter Marathon.

Lake Trip in March

Late March a sudden change in weather allowed many UCG Students to enjoy the warm temperature and travel to Hoornsemeer for a relaxing afternoon at the beach.

Frozen Canals and Snow in February

Minus Temperatures made it possible for us to put on some skates and access the canal from another point of view.

Snowball Fights in the Courtyard

At the same time as the frozen canals, clouds opened up, changing Groningen into a Winter World. Many of us exploited this for Snowball fights and Sledding in the Noorderplantsoen.

Sport Events with Groups of Students

During the year several groups formed for small sport events. These Teamsports included Basketball, Football, as well as, Beach Volleyball.

Beer Pong Tournament 1 and 2 The famous and popular beer pong nights, hosted by Keelan Toomey led to fun evening in C3 and exciting beer pong matches between self chosen teams of UCG students.

Winners would get the prize money after successfully beating all other teams.

Crazy 88

Crazy 88 was an initiative by Caerus to create entertaining party-like events during Corona times. Even with COVID-19 regulations being in place, we were able to enjoy a fun night of drinking with friends over the internet. Small groups of students completed different challenges with the goal of winning a small prize. Since the event was so popular and successful a second Crazy 88 was initiated shortly after.

Conflict with SSH After SSH decided to install new security measures, with security guards walking around the building at night, many Students started to complain about invasion of privacy and other tissues. Additionally, cleaning was done insufficiently, damaged furniture and broken safety equipment were found frequently. All these issues were gathered and reported to the Head of Student Affairs at UCG, which eventually resulted in the dis installment of the security guards and the fixing of safety measures.

Advice from Students to Students Don't look back until there's a good view and that thing you're too scared to try or do... DO IT! Always love yourself!

When something is scary or uncomfortable, press your hand on your heart and say "All is well".

Life takes effort.

Start that f***ing essay on time!!! But also enjoy life, there's more to life than studying my dudes.

Listen to your own gut feeling and believe that it speaks the truth as to what is best for you.

Enjoy the little things.

Once you realize that everyone has lived eventfully and that they are largely shaped by what they experienced, it becomes a lot easier to understand their motives in life.

If you need a push try cycling at night in a bathrobe.

Don't go near your laptop with a full bowl of noodles unless you have really good insurance. Also, always take care of yourself first.

Remember that you are in charge of your life at the end of the day :).

As long as you're the one smiling you don't need to worry about anyone else in the room.

Procrastination does not make the work go away.

The most important thing is to enjoy your life, be happy, that's all that matters.

Do not eat yellow snow.

Not a single grown-up actually knows what they are doing, don't feel bad if you do not have everything figured out.

We shouldn't be so hard on ourselves. Usually, we are the hardest and most judgemental towards ourselves and we treat ourselves in a way we would never treat other people, so it's important to remember that we are just doing our best with what we have. This definitely makes me happier to remember.

More fiber in your diet, your roommates will thank you.

Please don't be someone who hoards toilet paper during a pandemic.

After three years, you will finally understand what exactly you learned at UCG. Start your day with a walk or a run, a (cold) shower, and some meditation.

Never politely decline when somebody offers you food, they may not ask twice (especially in the Netherlands haha).

Health > everything else.

Read the TER. Stay true to yourself.

Always, ALWAYS, put some water next to your bedside, you will thank yourself in the morning :).

Aim for progress over perfection.

Keep asking yourself what it is you really want to do.

Slow down, do things at your own pace and time, don't pressure yourself too much, and don't compare yourself or your life path to others.

The unexpected is sometimes the best part.
