The Meaning of the Maltese Cross

The Maltese Cross, adopted by Clarkson College, is a symbol of protection and a badge of honor. The story originated with the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, a charitable, non-military organization that existed during the 11th and 12th centuries. The symbol they adopted was a white or silver cross on a dark background. They became known as the Knights of Hospitallers because of their charity toward the sick and poor in setting up hospices and hospitals.

The Knights of St. John eventually moved to the Island of Malta, the island for which the Maltese Cross was named.

Milestone Moments of Our Path In the early 1880’s, Bishop Robert H. Clarkson of the Omaha Episcopal Cathedral recognized the need for quality care for the ill and less fortunate in the community. A vision of establishing a training school for nurses emanated from the Bishop’s observance of the care provided at one of Omaha’s only functioning hospitals, Good Samaritan Hospital, which was under the purview of the Episcopal Diocese. After the Bishop’s passing in 1884, his wife, Meliora, was determined to carry out her late husband’s vision. Through Mrs. Clarkson’s zeal and devotion, Omaha opened its first training school for nurses in 1888.

In 1890, the training school graduated its first nursing student. Enrollment gradually climbed year after year, and in 1936 the school moved to a larger location with students housed in several homes nearby. Over the next three decades, the school experienced further growth and location changes and admitted its first male student.

During the 1980s, major accreditation from leading educational bodies advanced Bishop Clarkson School of Nursing to the four-year degree-granting college it is today. In 1987, we appointed our first President, Dr. Patricia Book Perry, and established a Board of Directors. The new leadership drove a major expansion of academic programs and degrees. By the 1990s, the College offered degrees in Radiologic Technology, Physical Therapist Assistant and Health Care Business and became a leader in online education.

In 2004, the College increased student engagement and services on campus with the opening of a Student Center and Residence Hall. Within the next decade, academic offerings and training experiences continued to expand. In 2010, Clarkson College became the first institution in Omaha to offer a Master of Science in Nursing degree with a specialization in Nurse Anesthesia and introduced two doctoral programs in 2014. The eight points of the Cross represent the Beatitudes prescribed in the Sermon on the Mount. Those in effect, declare: blessed are (1) the poor in spirit, (2) the meek, (3) the pure, (4) the merciful, (5) the peacemakers, (6) they that mourn, (7) they that seek righteousness, and (8) they who are persecuted for righteousness sake. These Knights of centuries past were united by a pledge of compassion and courage. The College has adopted this symbol as it represents all that the College strives for in preparing health care professionals.

What to Expect The weeks leading up to your first day at Clarkson College are some of the most significant. During this time, you’ll get registered for courses, complete the online Student Orientation Tutorial and attend New Student Orientation—all key elements for your early and long-term educational success. Here, we chronologically outline what you can expect as you prepare for your first day of classes.

Advising & Registration Day One of the initial steps you’ll complete during Advising and Registration Day is meeting with your academic advisor. Your advisor will provide assistance as you progress through your program. During your meeting, you will register for classes and have the opportunity to ask questions about your academic plan and goals.

While meeting with your advisor, every effort will be made to accommodate your desired course section. If any of the courses you select have already reached the maximum student enrollment, you may be placed on a waitlist. If a seat becomes available in the waitlisted course, you will be notified of the opening via your Clarkson College e-mail account. You will have 72 hours after receiving the e-mail to enroll in the course. Failure to enroll will automatically drop you from the waitlisted course.

Maximizing Your Education Our primary objective at Clarkson College is to prepare you to be the best in your chosen field of health care. One means of achieving this is encouraging students to take advantage of our minor and dual degree options.

Dual Degrees If you are enrolled in the Health Information Technology (HIT), Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) or Radiologic Technology (RT) programs, you have the option to simultaneously earn a bachelor’s degree in one of the following majors: ›› Health Care Services ›› Health Care Administration & Management ›› Medical Imaging (RT students only)

Each minor option is 18 credit hours and can be completed in conjunction with your major coursework.

All coursework for the bachelor’s degree options is available entirely online, and fulltime enrollment will enable you to complete both of your degrees in as few as three years.

Obtaining Your Parking Permit Due to our location on the Nebraska Medicine campus, Clarkson College student parking permits are allocated by the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) Parking Services. You can purchase your permit at New Student Orientation from the UNMC Parking Services booth, or you can obtain it by visiting their office.

To obtain your parking permit, you will need: ›› Your Clarkson College Student ID badge or class schedule. ›› Another valid identification (driver’s license or state ID card). ›› The make, model, year and license plate number of your vehicle. ›› Credit/debit card, personal check or cash.

Quick Parking Facts ›› Parking permits are valid from the fall term through the summer term. ›› Permits must be on vehicles by the first day of the term and must be affixed on the inside of the front windshield, lower left hand corner (driver’s side). ›› Rule violations can result in a ticket or the car being towed at the owner’s expense. ›› Two types of student parking permits are available: commuter and residential.

Purchasing & Renting Textbooks On your Advising and Registration Day, you will be given information about an option to preorder your textbooks. When your books are ready, you will be notified through your Clarkson College e-mail account. Just make sure to bring a photo ID and your course schedule to the Bookstore, and you’ll be good to go!

If you prefer to rent or purchase your textbooks on your own, you can do so at the Clarkson College Bookstore any time following registration. Simply bring your course schedule to complete your checkout.

Note: Certain textbooks may be required for more than one course/semester. Please contact your advisor/program director before renting a book to verify that you will not need to keep it for a future course.

Obtaining Your Student ID Badge & Key Card Get ready for your close-up. On your Advising and Registration Day, we’ll have staff on hand to take your photo. The College will use this image on your Student ID badge, which will be ready for you to pick up at New Student Orientation. You will also be given a keycard to give you access to various buildings and rooms on campus.

Since your Student ID badge is such an important piece of plastic, many students attach it to a lanyard or their car keys. If you misplace or lose your ID badge, contact the Educational Resource Center at 402.552.3919, and they can replace it for a $5 fee.

Commuter Parking Permit Commuter students are required to park in assigned lots. Parking permits are valid in all of Lots 43S, 48S, 33S, 52S and 54S. If the assigned student parking areas are full, students should park in Lots 15, 17, 49 and 63.

Residential Parking Permit Students living on campus are required to park in assigned lots. Parking permits are valid in Lots 11SH and 12SH. If the assigned residential student lots are full, residents should overflow to the assigned commuter student parking areas.

Understanding Health & Safety Requirements As a college focused on health care, we take your health and safety—as well as the health and safety of those with whom you interact—very seriously. On Advising and Registration Day, you will learn about the various, program-specific health and safety requirements you need to complete as an incoming student. The information provided will clarify which requirements you need to fulfill, the deadline to complete them, and how to set up your account in CastleBranch (myCB)—the online system you will use to upload important health records and other documentation. Following registration, an e-mail will be sent to your student account with a package code to place and purchase your order, i.e. set up your account in myCB. Pricing is set by the program-specific needs and ranges from $30 to $125 (international students: fees will be higher and vary depending on country of origin).

Tech Support If you have questions or experience any technological difficulties with Online Campus, select the Tech Support tab (as seen below), located in the top right corner of your Online Campus course shell. You have the option to chat in real-time or speak with a representative via phone.

College E-mail Account As a new student, Clarkson College sets you up with a Microsoft Outlook e-mail account to communicate with Clarkson College faculty, staff and fellow students.

1. To ensure the best possible experience, click on the Technical Requirements link on the Online Campus login page, and check the compatibility of your browser and hardware. Course lectures are all Flash files, which iOS tablets, such as iPads, do not support. Students with tablets are advised to download an alternative browser called Puffin, which will play the Flash files.

My Financial Aid is an online system that allows you to view, accept and check the status of your financial aid awards.

First Steps: Filing Your FAFSA You must have a financial aid record already established at Clarkson College in order to use My Financial Aid. If you have not begun the financial aid application process, you can get started by completing the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.ed.gov. Enter the Clarkson College school code, 009862, on your application in order for our Student Financial Services department to automatically receive a copy.

If you qualify for grants and/or student loans, Clarkson College will notify you once your first financial aid package is ready for review.

Media Release Authorization Clarkson College wants to celebrate your achievements. When you’re nearing graduation or receive an award such as a scholarship or dean’s list recognition, we will send an announcement to your hometown newspaper that highlights your achievement. In order for the College to submit congratulatory announcements to your desired newspaper with the most up-to-date information, you will need to complete the online Media Release Authorization form.

6. Accept, decline or reduce your award amount. You must complete this step before your elected amount of aid can be disbursed.

1. Scroll down to the Registrar section, and select Online Media Release Authorization form.

2. Enter your Student ID and last name in the fields that appear.

3. Enter as much information as you wish to be disclosed.

If you do not authorize your information to be disclosed to the media under any circumstance, you must still complete the online form, and select “False” for the question pertaining to authorization.

Recovering a Forgotten Password If you forget your password, enter your Clarkson College ID in the Student ID box on the My Financial Aid homepage, then click Forgot Your Password?.

You will be prompted to answer one of your security questions and then create a new password.

Textbook information is available at least three weeks prior to the start of classes. Hours of Operation The Bookstore has varying hours throughout the academic year. Regular hours of operation are Monday–Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and winter hours are Monday–Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Title IX & Clarkson College Policies

Clarkson College strives to provide an environment free from all forms of sexual misconduct to all of its community members. Sexual misconduct includes dating violence, domestic assault, domestic violence, rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment and stalking. All forms of sexual misconduct are violations of College policy and will not be tolerated.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities.

If you disclose an incident of sexual misconduct to any Clarkson College employee, that employee is required to report the incident to the Title IX Coordinator. The one exception is if you disclose an incident to the College counselor. The counselor is not required to report without your permission. The Title IX Coordinator will honor, to the greatest extent possible, your request for confidentiality; however, this cannot be guaranteed when your safety or the safety of others is of concern. Offered between semesters, the two-week immersion experience is the keystone of a General Education core curriculum course (HC 204) and two General Education elective courses (HC 280, HC 290) for one to five hours of course credit.

As a new student, meeting with your academic advisor is an important step in your academic journey. Your advisor will help you enroll in your firstsemester courses, begin your degree plan and discuss your academic goals at Clarkson College.

As a returning student, you will register for courses via Self-Service, the Clarkson College web-based system referenced on page 17. How Do I Make a Change to My Registration?

You have two options for making changes to your course schedule: 1. Online via Self-Service (prior to the start of the semester).

Adding Courses Adding a course or transferring from one section of a course to another may be completed through the first five days of instruction in a semester. web

Dropping Courses A course may be dropped prior to the beginning of the semester, and a refund granted if it is accomplished according to the Tuition Refund Schedule.

Withdrawing from Courses A course may be withdrawn (after the start of the semester) and a refund granted if it is accomplished according to the Tuition Refund Schedule. It is your responsibility to initiate this change in the Registrar’s office by completing a Change of Registration form and submitting it to the Registrar’s office.

A grade of “W” (Withdrawal) is recorded on your permanent record if a course is withdrawn after the term begins, according to the length of the course below: ›› 15-week course: Before the end of the 10th week ›› 12-week course: Before the end of the eighth week ›› Six-week course: Before the end of the third week A grade of “WP” (Withdrawal Pass) or “WF” (Withdrawal Fail) is recorded on your permanent record if a course is withdrawn after the term begins, according to the length of the course below: ›› 15-week course: 11th–14th week ›› 12-week course: Ninth–11th week ›› Six-week course: Fourth–fifth week If you stop attending classes or tell the instructor you are withdrawing from the College without completing the required form, you will have failing (F) grades posted on your academic records.

Note: Courses may not be withdrawn during final exam period.

Leave of Absence from College A leave of absence is a “time certain” withdrawal from Clarkson College. Leaves are granted for a minimum of one semester and a maximum of three consecutive semesters. Any student on a Leave of Absence (LOA) who does not register for any classes after three consecutive semesters will be automatically withdrawn from the College. For further information, refer to the Clarkson College Academic Catalog, your advisor or the Registrar’s office.

Official Withdrawal from College If you are in good academic standing but wish to discontinue enrollment at Clarkson College, you will need to set up an appointment with your advisor to initiate the process.

Clarkson College complies with the Drug-Free School and Communities Act Amendments of 1989 through the publication of the Drug and Alcohol Policy and other written material distributed annually to students and employees. This policy holds all members of the College community accountable for any occurrence in which the use of alcohol or controlled substances interferes with the educational process.

Stipulations outlined in the Drug and Alcohol Policy apply any time you are present on the Clarkson College campus (classroom, communal or Residence Hall) or within a clinical or practicum setting where you are representing yourself as a Clarkson College student. Violations of the policy may directly affect your progression in your program of study.
