Head Coach

Gina McHenry 17th Season Gina McHenry embarks on her 17th season at the helm of both the men’s and women’s swimming programs at York College. A graduate of York, McHenry has been associated with YCP for 22 years. She swam with the Spartans for four seasons before graduating with a degree in recreation and leisure administration. One year after her graduation, McHenry returned poolside for the Green and White as an assistant coach. The following year, she became the head coach of both squads. McHenry brings a wealth of experience to the Spartan program, evidenced by her tenure as York’s head coach and her affiliation with the American Swimming Coaches Association. She is a three-time Capital Athletic Conference men’s swimming Coach-of-the-Year, winning the award in the 2003-04, 2005-06, and 2006-07 campaigns. McHenry, who ranks first all-time on the Spartan coaching career wins list with 126 victories, has recruited and coached 48 All-CAC swimmers during her tenure, including the 2007-08 CAC Male Swimmer-of-the-Year, Steven Fulcher. “Our coaching staff works to develop each swimmer to their fullest potential as an individual and a team member,” McHenry said. “Hard work, dedication, and pride are key elements to the YCP swimming program.” McHenry resides in Jacobus with her husband, Bob, and daughters, Sophia, Isabella, and Amelia.

Assistant Coach

Scott Herdson 13th Season

Scott Herdson returns to the Spartan coaching staff as Coach McHenry’s assistant. Herdson begins his 13th season poolside for the Spartans after a successful collegiate career. While an undergraduate at York, he was a four-year letterwinner who established two school records. In addition, Herdson was a team captain and MVP during his years in the YCP pool. He graduated with a degree in information systems while Herdson also received an MBA from York. Herdson resides in Jacobus with his wife, Nicki, and their daughter, Anna.

2009 Spartan Women'S SWimming previeW A new day has dawned on the York College women’s swimming program. Flush with a crop of young, talented swimmers, the 2009-2010 squad could prove to be one of the best teams in the history of York swimming. “We have a new team this year,” Spartan head coach Gina McHenry raved. “It is only preseason so we have a very long way to go, but our expectations are very high. This team could be the start of something special.” McHenry has reason to be hopeful as quality upperclassmen leadership is bolstered by an infusion of fresh young talent. That leadership begins with York’s five seniors as Flor Isabel Aroche, Kaitlin Crean, Kristin Leonard, Ashley Stanton, and Molly Wasik begin their final campaign in the Green and White. These five have seen the Spartan program begin to turn the corner. Over the previous three seasons, York has accumulated a 19-17 overall record, while putting up a 6-11 mark against Capital Athletic Conference opponents. The Spartans continue to improve the program with the main evidence coming at last year’s CAC Championships where the Green and White shattered eleven school records. Wasik was among those record-breakers as she snapped a trio of school records at last year’s CAC Championships. A standout in the 200 IM as well as the sprint backstroke events, Wasik will look for a great finish to her Spartan career. Stanton performed exceptionally well in the freestyle relays just one year ago and will strive to do so again this season. The Spartans’ four juniors, Alison Beverly, Lisa King, Maureen Loughman, and Colleen Walker, will also look to build upon their previous two seasons and help along York’s younger swimmers. King in particular helped the Green and White to a school record in the 400 freestyle relay last season and, along with her fellow classmates, will look for overall improvement in 2009-10. Opening the year, York’s sophomores look to be the squad’s strongest group as Kate Estes, Liz Grey, and Michaela Guild are joined by Spartan newcomers Heather MacLennan and Kathy Murphy. Grey and Guild burst onto the scene last season in just their rookie campaigns. Guild herself broke four school records in freestyle events at her first championships and, with a season of experience as well as an off-season of training, could be primed for a great sophomore season. Grey also established herself as one of York’s top young swimmers setting a new school record in the 100 butterfly while anchoring two relay squads which also set new program bests. MacLennan carries great promise into this season after transferring from Division II Tampa. An infusion of seven freshmen brings an added energy and influx of talent to the Spartan roster. Meg Dailey, Alex Minsky, Bethany Moore, Mandy Oldham, Katelyn Romm, Chelsea Ross, and Amanda Silcox have the chance to contribute immediately. Despite the Spartans finishing toward the bottom of the league standings in previous campaigns, McHenry is exceptionally optimistic about the prospects of this year’s team. “We have the talent this season to begin an ascent up the CAC ladder,” McHenry said. “Our swimmers this year are a motivated and hardworking group that knows they have an opportunity to start something great.” Not only does McHenry believe the Spartans will be better within the league, but she also believes that numerous records will fall this year. “Once again, with the talent we have, we should be able to almost completely re-write the record books,” McHenry said. “Obviously, you have to get it done come the meets, but the potential we have is outstanding.” York will begin to realize that potential Friday, November 6, as the Spartans host CAC foes Hood and Mary Washington. The Green and White’s first meet this season is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. from York’s Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.

2009 Spartan men'S SWimming previeW The 2009-2010 York College men’s swimming squad brims with talent and depth as they enter the new campaign. The Spartans will look to build on last season’s tremendous momentum, evidenced by the Green and White breaking a total of ten school records, including eight individual marks, at last year’s Capital Athletic Conference Championships. With the return of six swimmers who were at least part of those ten record-breaking events, the Spartans will look to continue their stay in the upper echelon of the league standings. “We have an opportunity to have a strong season,” Spartan head coach Gina McHenry said. “We have talented swimmers throughout our lineup and great senior leadership. These two things will be key for us throughout the year.” York sports seven seniors on this season’s squad as Clark Arnold, Colin Brown, Andrew Demarest, Dan Kresser, Justin Murphy, Mike Murphy, and Adam Willier return for their final campaign. Amassing a 28-3 mark over the previous three seasons, including a 15-3 record in league meets, this group of Spartans has seen a second-place finish in each of their three CAC Championships. Led by Arnold and Mike Murphy, who captured the title in the 100 freestyle last year, this exceptional senior class could see the Green and White reach new heights. York’s seven juniors bolster the Spartans’ upperclassmen-heavy roster. AJ Bean, Tom DeCoursey, Ben Hilt, Matt Kempel, Chris Schleicher, Steve Tobin, and Steve Yeager provide the Green and White with outstanding talent and the experience of two collegiate seasons already under their belts. Tobin could have a breakout year, after snapping a pair of individual breaststroke records at last season’s championships. Bean finished second in the 200 backstroke just one year ago and will look for the top spot this season. The Spartans’ five sophomores continue the trend of strong classes as Alex Diehl, Jack Gottschalk, Jamie Hicks, Richard Janosky, and Brian Shaffer each return for their second season in the Green and White. Highlighted by Gottschalk, who made a huge splash in just his freshman campaign as he continually shattered previous Spartan records in distance freestyle events, this class could prove exceptional. With a year of experience and a full off-season of conditioning to their credit, the sophomore class has the potential to be scary good. York also sports a diverse group of freshmen who bring new energy to the Spartan pool. Kip Likes, Will McLennan, Steven Mercer, Andy Woods, and Tyler Ziegler bring quality talent and a fresh mindset that could propel York throughout the year. After finishing in second place in each of the past three seasons, McHenry knows that it will take a little extra for the Spartans to compete with CAC front-runner Mary Washington. “They have a great program, and they do some great things in the pool,” McHenry commented on Mary Washington’s men’s swimming team. “But at the same time, we are not afraid of them anymore. We believe that we can compete come CAC Championships, and that is what we are aiming toward.” With the league championships still months away, McHenry wants the Spartans to consistently build and improve throughout the year. “We have altered the way we do things for this season,” McHenry said. “Our practices are different, our meet schedule is different. That is by design so that we can improve each and every day and be primed for the end of the season. If that happens I think we will be in a great position come mid-February’s championships.” The Green and White officially open their 2009-2010 season Friday, November 6, as they host a pair of CAC foes. Hood and rival Mary Washington invade York’s Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center for a 6:00 p.m. tri-meet.
