YorK CoLLeGe oVerVieW York College of Pennsylvania is a private-sector, independent institution of higher education, which focuses on offering baccalaureate degree programs in the arts and sciences, business administration, education, public affairs, and nursing. Students may also enroll in courses leading to the associate degree and master’s degree. The College draws its 4,600 full-time undergraduate and 1,500 part-time and graduate students from some 30 states and 36 foreign countries. Typically, 50% of York’s freshmen hail from Pennsylvania; 30% from New York and New Jersey; and 15% from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, and Connecticut. Others come from states up and down the East Coast and from abroad. Most of York’s part-time and graduate students reside and are employed in the greater York Area. The College occupies a 190-acre, park-like campus, just beyond the York city (pop. 50,000) limits, in the rolling hills of the south central part of the state. Close to the heart of “Pennsylvania Dutch” country, York is one hour from Baltimore; two hours from Philadelphia or Washington, DC; and four hours from New York City, Pittsburgh, or Richmond. Nearly half of its undergraduate students reside in college housing in the vicinity of the campus. York College envisions itself as a center of affordable academic excellence and has received favorable national recognition for its success in offering a higher education program of high quality at a tuition rate substantially lower than the rates charged by institutions of similar type, scope, and distinction. York’s effective control of tuition costs stems principally from the long-term, generous support of the College by its friends in the York community and its alumni. This support has provided both superior debt-free physical facilities and permanent endowment resources sufficient to fund institutional scholarships and financial aid for needy students. York uses this fiscal strength in turn to provide a kind of “scholarship” to each of its students in the form of relatively modest charges for tuition and campus housing. York College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and has specialized accreditation for its business, nursing, allied health, and recreation programs. York College is proud of its ongoing efforts in gender equity. As per the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act of 1994, information regarding YCP’s gender equity statistics is available for review in the office of the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation. Students can request a copy of the report from the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation.

The GrumbaCher SPorT & FiTneSS CenTer The York College campus officially grew on April 29, 2006, as the College unveiled the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center to the public. This 160,000 square foot complex is the centerpiece for student life on the College’s West Campus. Bordered by McKay Hall and Grantley Hall, and a quadrangle of new dormitories, the Center features the Charles Wolf Gymnasium, a 1,712-seat arena hosting varsity competition in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and wrestling. Other features include an eight-lane competitive pool with instructional areas and 1- and 3-meter diving boards, a three-court field house, spacious locker room facilities, and a stateof-the-art fitness area that spreads out over 7,600 square feet. Two new Sport Turf fields sit directly south of the Grumbacher Center. Graham Field is home to the men’s and women’s soccer and track & field teams while Kinsley Field is the home of the field hockey, men’s lacrosse, and women’s lacrosse teams.

The York College men’s tennis team looks to the 2010 season with a new coach, new faces and a fresh start. The Spartans hope to continue to build on the program’s success over recent years. York introduced new head coach Ryan Weber in June of 2009 as the successor to previous head coach Mark Ludwig. Ludwig had led the Spartans over the previous 11 seasons, including a 2009 campaign that ended with a 10-8 record with a 4-2 result in Capital Athletic Conference action. Weber enters the season having coached the women’s team for the past two seasons. Spartan tennis players, familiar with Weber during his time as an assistant with the squad, will continue to look to Weber for his immense knowledge on the court. The 2009 campaign for the Spartans included a six-match winning streak that was halted in the CAC semifinals against then-seventh ranked Salisbury. York now looks to build on last season’s success with a core of returning players and a few new additions to the roster. Despite losing three of the top six singles players from the 2009 squad, the Green and White should be successful in the upcoming season with their depth of the roster. “We have the players capable of filling those positions and picking up wins throughout the singles lineup,” Weber said. “We have always been relatively deep and I think it remains true with this year’s squad.” Co-captains Paul Graci and Steve Collison, both seniors, will look to lead the program this season. Graci and Collison have been a part of the Spartans success as each has seen significant time in the singles lineup as well as on the doubles court, including an 11-5 record as a pair in 2009. Graci begins the year as York’s top-choice for the #1 singles slot. The Spartans’ #2 last year, Graci will bring quality experience to the top of the lineup. An offseason injury sidelined Graci during the fall but he has recovered and is ready for a strong 2010. “He is determined to overcome the injury and lead the team,” Weber said of Graci. “He brings the same determination to the court and is one of the best counter-punchers I have seen.” Collison embarks on the final season of his Spartan career looking to build on last year’s 12-6 mark. Collison is known for his forehand, and is celebrated as “extremely athletic and powerful” by coach Weber. Along with the two Spartan seniors the team returns juniors Colin Jones, Travis Klein, Justin Hostetter, Ryan Harvey, and Phil Myers. Rounding out the roster is sophomore James Villari, along with freshmen Eric Cooperman and Keith Welch.

The York College women’s tennis team looks to the 2010 season with a youthful team full of potential. The Spartan women look to improve on last season’s record that netted them a 5-11 campaign, including a 3-3 mark in Capital Athetlic Conference action. York will look to third-year head coach Ryan Weber continue to rebuild the program. For the immediate future, Weber will have to replace Megan Logan, a 2009 All-CAC second-team choice. The 2009 campaign for the Spartans included a run into the CAC semifinals where the fell to Salisbury. This season, the squad enters the 2010 campaign as an exceptionally young team sporting only one senior and one junior. “I am very encouraged by the way our team performed in the preseason,” Weber said. “I believe that the new additions to our lineup will be able to gain not only experience but victories.” The Green and White will look to last year’s #2 singles player to make great strides for the Spartans during the 2010 season. Senior Paige Doutrich will lead an athletic squad as the team’s captain. “As captain, Paige sets the tone at practices and has done a great job,” Weber said. “She works hard and pushes those around her to do the same.” Joining Doutrich as an upperclassman will be the York’s lone junior, Stephanie Nelson. Nelson has provided the team with multiple victories over the past two seasons including last years’s 8-5 campaign. Nelson’s ability to keep her opponents off balance is the key to her success. Katelyn Acker and Samantha Brenner, the Spartans two sophomore players, are each exceptionally talented student-athletes who have shown improvement over the offseason. “Their work ethic is unmatched,” Weber said of Acker and Brenner. “They are always hitting outside of practice.” Acker, last season’s #1 singles player, will look to build off of the valuable experience she gained as a rookie. Acker will apply what she learned last season in hopes of gaining ground on the rest of the conference. The Spartans will look to multiple freshmen during the 2010 season to provide quality matches in the singles lineup. Freshmen Megan McCullin, Maria McFaulds and Samantha Hunt will all look to showcase their individual talents on the court.
