Message from Our Leadership On December 12, 2018, we changed our name from YMCA Camp Ockanickon, Inc. to YMCA of the Pines. We realized that our name was not indicative of all that we do here. We serve as many as 15,000 people per year, with about 3,000 of those individuals served in the summer. We are so much more than a summer camp.

This is not to say that camp is not important; it is. In fact, of all the programs we provide we believe that camping has the possibility of providing the greatest impact on a child’s life in the shortest amount of time. It is also from camping that we find most of our staff. It is where we find most of our donors. Camping produces our most dedicated alumni. Camping is our roots and camping is our future.

We do provide before- and after-school childcare in a program called School’s Out. We believe our School’s Out program is not just a safe place for children to be, it is also rewarding, challenging and enriching. Many parents send their children to our program, not because they need someone to babysit, but because they want their children to have extra enrichment, time with friends, and more physical activity. For this reason, we do not like using the term “childcare” to describe what we do. It is too limiting.

Throughout the non-summer months, we collaborate with dozens of schools and non-profits to provide life-changing outdoor experiences for youth and adults. The vast majority of these programs are subsidized through our scholarship funds and our operating surplus. We do this so that children from all walks of life can experience the outdoors, regardless of where they are from.

We believe that the zip code into which one is born does not determine one’s future. Nor should one’s ability to access nature and gain an understanding of our natural surroundings. These programs provide team-building, environmental education, confidence-affirming challenges, and much needed social interactions. A recent study found that in a single year, young people ages 6-17 had experienced an 11% decline in participation in outdoor activities. This is a trend that has persisted for many years now. There is a nature deficit in America with young people and it affects all demographics. We are working to fix this.

Our new name allows us to better communicate the depth and breadth of what we do. It’s allowed us to start conversations with new partners. It’s opened up additional fundraising opportunities.

It’s allowed our 113-year-old boys sleepaway camp to reclaim its place as the sole owner of the Ockanickon name in our organization. When people hear Ockanickon, we want them to think ‘boys sleepaway camping’. When people hear YMCA of the Pines, we want them to think of an awesome, impactful, life-changing organization that is making the world a better place through many different programs.

THE GIFT OF OPPORTUNITY

The theme for this campaign came from Isabella (the daughter of our VP of Development and Major Gifts), who has benefited from both day camp and sleepaway camp. Her mom asked her what we give children and teens when they come to camp, and her response was “the gift of opportunity.”

Thanks to the support of caring individuals and partners, we were able to give children and teens an opportunity to discover their true potential, to develop self-confidence and self-awareness, to gain leadership and mentorship skills, to forge long-lasting relationships, to enjoy the outdoors. Together, we gave children an opportunity to belong!

We helped families create stronger bonds and gave them an opportunity to become active and passionate supporters of the great outdoors.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE  7,878 School-aged children took advantage of our School programs through our Outdoor Center.

Participants from youth-serving organizations benefited from a retreat program.

 136 Children and teens attended Lake Stockwell Day Camp, our co-ed summer program. 65 of these children were from active military families.

 121 Children and teens attended Camp Ockanickon – sleepaway camp for boys. 25 of these children were from active military families.

 118 Children and teens attended Camp Matollionequay sleepaway camp for girls. 21 of these children were from active military families.

 114 Children and teens attended Camp Bright Feathers – for children affected by public health concerns, primarily HIV/AIDS and/or violence.

IMPACTFUL PARTNERSHIPS

Thanks to a generous grant from Summer Camp Opportunities Promotes Education (SCOPE), we were able to triple the amount of scholarships we provided to students from Atlantic City and other under-served communities, for camps Ockanickon and Matollionequay. We continued our partnership with New York Avenue School to identify and select the students for the camp experience. 100% of the students who attend this school qualify for the free lunch program. In addition, we also formed partnerships with Richmond Avenue School in Atlantic City, and the Boys & Girls Club of Philadelphia.

CAMP OCKANICKON

SLEEPAWAY CAMP FOR BOYS 618 Campers developed self-reliance, experienced personal growth, overcame challenges and built enduring friendships.

PERSONAL GROWTH “I was scared on my first day because it was the first time I was away from my parents. By the last day, I was sad because I didn’t want to leave. I made new friends and the counselors were very nice and respectful. Being in the woods was awesome, because we could see deer at night. I learned swimming, archery and fishing. My parents say that after being exposed to overnight camp, now I am more aware of my surroundings, more mature and independent, and that I try to eat healthier and I socialize more. I would love to come back!” - Ockanickon Camper

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES “On my first day, I was very nervous and I was scared of what was going to happen during my stay at camp. When I came to camp, I was really afraid of heights, but then I climbed a rock wall. I was scared and I didn’t make it to the top, but I made it at least 20 feet into the air. I am still afraid of heights but not as scared as I was before coming to camp. Camp is a fun experience. I made new friends including counselors and found out new things about myself.” – Ockanickon Camper

CAMP MATOLLIONEQUAY SLEEPAWAY CAMP FOR GIRLS 840 Campers developed skills that led to growth, resilience, creative self-expression and self-confidence. Campers were empowered to be brave, to stay true to themselves and to grow into self-confident, courageous and compassionate leaders.

RESILIENCE AND SELF-CONFIDENCE “This was my second year at camp. I was very excited to see friends that I made the year before and to meet new ones. My favorite activity was Challenge Course because I pushed myself to try things that I wouldn’t normally do. I love the feeling of accomplishment after you finish a course.

I would like to return because it is an experience that encourages me to try new things and meet new people.”

TOOLS FOR THE FUTURE “The reason why I wanted to go to Matollionequay again this year is because this camp is preparing me for college.

Camp will help me with my socializing skills and independence. I say this because at this camp, I have to share a cabin with others, and be responsible for myself. In college, I will share a dorm with others, take care of myself, and work with other people. So as you can see, going to this camp will not just give me a great summer, it will kind of prepare me for the future.”

LAKE STOCKWELL DAY CAMP FOR BOYS AND GIRLS

1038 Campers learned to apply and enhance their problem-solving, leadership and communication skills, while participating in enriching, age-appropriate activities.

A SAFE PLACE TO BE “We trust our children with you for eight weeks every summer and it’s a huge responsibility.

POSITIVE ROLE MODELS “I have three boys who attend camp. They have been attending for years and have become well known among the staff. This year’s camp experience was exceptional. The boys said that this was easily the best year of camp ever. I know it has a lot to do with the awesome Explorer field trips, the fishing, and the festivities (did I mention the Trading Post?), but I also know that the heart of Camp Stockwell is its staff - they choose to become friends with the campers, and teach them lots of valuable things while somehow having a large amount of fun in the process. They had a positive effect on the kids that they had to look after and lead. On the last day of camp, my son hugged his counselors, said goodbye, and cried the whole way home. OUTDOOR CENTER

7,000+ School-aged children enjoyed outstanding recreational activities such as hiking, wall climbing, canoeing, boating, archery and more.

1,000+ Individuals participated in retreat programs and flourished as passionate members of the great outdoors.

300+ Individuals attended family programs, including Father/Child Weekend, Mother/Child Weekend, Memorial Day Family Camp Weekend and Labor Day Family Camp Weekend.

250+ Families enjoyed year-round membership to YMCA of the Pines, allowing them to hike, bike, swim, boat, fish and explore our 800 beautiful acres.

BOYS AND GIRLS OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT – BOLD & GOLD Our sleepaway campers got an opportunity to take part in BOLD & GOLD trips during camp sessions! Campers took on the challenge of an exciting wilderness adventure, and participated in activities such as hiking, camping, boating, climbing, fishing and service projects. The mission of our BOLD & GOLD program, which follows the national YMCA BOLD & GOLD curriculum, is to create a world where all young people have the emotional intelligence, courage and compassion to be positive, multicultural leaders in their communities.
