Editor’s note Hello Riddlers! WHAT? It’s July already? Time flew so quickly this year! How’s everyone summer break going? I hope it is fantastic. We all by now might have seen our IB or AP score by now and I hope you did great. If not, It’s totally okay. You shouldn’t be stressing out about it, it’s SUMMER, go attend service events, hangout with friends, and/or even take some time for yourself to reflect back and start the next school year. I, myself has been giving myself a well-deserved break and it felt so relaxing, it’s like all my stress are gone and I am so ready to start my last school year. Our club might not have alot of service events at the moment but don’t bee discouraged and stop being involved in this amazing organization. In Key Club, we have many other Kiwanis events that you can attend, one was KCTC that happened a few weeks back (thanks to those that attend, I truly appreciate it and hoped that you had a great time), Kiwanis DCM where you could here updates from our sponsors, and the DCM which you should totally attend to meet more amazing and passionate Key-Clubbers and to have fun! In this issue, we recap two of our service events and a Kiwanis event which was KCTC. With that, we have recognition for the month of June and a calendar for upcoming events for the month of July. If you’d like to bee featured in the next newsletter, feel free to write a short paragraph including a picture of you at the service event that you have attended and send it to ybkeyclub@gmail.com P.S you should totally attend the July DCM this SATURDAY, July 15th - Hao Le, Webmaster Editor ‘17-’18

President’s Message Hey Key Clubbers!

How is summer going so far? I am always excited for the summer because it is a great time to go hang out with friends. What greater way to hang out and volunteer with your friend than Key Club! So far we’ve had several service events. We love to go out there and help the community, as well as support those groups that are in need! Service comes in all kinds of shape, whether it be helping set up tables at an event, helping out a race, or even something as simple as helping pass out flyers! There are many service events that YBKC specifically volunteers for. It is a great way to go and meet all of you all! Moreover, there is a Division Council Meeting every month and we are hosting July’s! At DCM’s there are many fun activities that make you go out of your comfort zone to meet new people! My Key Club moment was Light the Night walk my Freshmen year. I was inspired by the amount of people that comes out just to support a cause. That was my first ever volunteering event and from then on, I continue to volunteer whenever I am able to. I strongly urge all of you to come out to one of our service event, or division, and upcoming meetings, maybe you will find your Key Club moment. - Julia Nguyen, President ‘17-’18 YERBA BUENA KEY CLUB

Lairon College Prep Academy Dumpster Day Thien Nguyen, Vice-President ‘17-’18

D

umpster Day service event was a two part event. On the latter part, we came together to hold and help out on the actual event. Representing YBKC was Harry Nguyen, Bryan Cuevas, Julia Nguyen, and Thien Nguyen. The goal of dumpster day was to provide the local neighborhood with a day to throw away their junk in the appropriate place instead of on the street. At the beginning of the event, YBKC went around the line of cars to get the participants to sign in. Once the event started, cars rolled in as volunteers quickly swarmed and removed the junk, tossing it into the dumpsters. Items from broken toilets to degrading children’s toys were swiftly removed or dismantled and moved into the appropriate dumpsters. The work was not pleasant in the slightest, but proper safety equipment and masks helped the volunteers plow through with their work. We managed to have fun despite physically taxing work with the power of positive outlooks and enjoying each other’s company. In the end, signs and barriers were torn down, and the hosts provided us with food and refreshments for our hard work. 8

2017 City youth confernce Bryan Cuevas, Project Coordinator ‘17-’18

A

t the 2017 Citywide Youth Conference they were trying to get more young people involved with the San Jose government. They were teaching them about various policies, programs, and problems that the San Jose government dealt with. For instance, one of the problems that they had the youth try to solve was the problem of illegal immigration and how to deal with it since San Jose is a sanctuary city. They put them in teams to try and solve the issue and the winners would win an internship. It was interesting seeing the solutions that the various groups had come up with to help the illegal immigrants, and along with that there were different groups there to teach the youth on various subjects such as your rights during a police stop, traffic safety, etcetera. The 2017 Citywide Youth Conference was an amazing event that the San Jose City Government held for the youth. YERBA BUENA KEY CLUB

oing to the KCTC, I appreciated that we had encouragement and many opportunities to talk to new people throughout all of Region 17. Because this was my first region event, I was able to experience what Key Club is like outside of just my division, as well as get to know new people, and learn how to better myself as an officer.
