HOMES FOR HEIFERS CALF ROUNDUP DONATION PROGRAM Since 1957, Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch has been committed to improving the lives of troubled youth through hands-on learning and involvement with agriculture. YBGR’s Calf Donation/Homes for Heifers Program offers a unique way for ranchers to contribute to Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch. Timeless values live on at Yellowstone through agriculture traditions that embody hard work, love of the land, and respect of animals.

How Yellowstone’s Farm and Ranch Program Helped a Troubled Young Woman On a snowy Saturday morning in February, the girls from Shumaker Lodge were walking across campus when an echoing bellow cut through the chilly air. The girls all stopped and turned to each other in confusion, all but one. Mia simply smiled as she informed her peers, “It’s ok. One of the cows is in labor.”

Two weeks prior, Mia had been just as confused by similar noises in the calving barn where she was working as a member of Ranch Manager Gary Adam’s work crew. “I was mucking out a stall when Gary brought in a bellowing cow. He assured me that everything was fine, that she just was in labor. I finished my task, and then got to watch as the cow gave birth. It was cool! Gross, but cool, to watch this little calf be born and get up on it wobbly legs so soon,” said Mia. Mia is from a suburb outside of Los Angles and had never been anywhere near livestock prior to her arrival at the Ranch. She had been struggling in school and was behind her peers academically. She had some mild social anxiety, but during her freshman year of high school, she was bullied and assaulted by upper classman which had caused her to spiral and become even more anxious in social settings. She started

missing weeks of school at a time and was hospitalized several times before her family and school reached out to YBGR. Upon her arrival at the Ranch, Mia quickly gravitated towards the animals, first with therapy dogs Emmy Lou and Cooper, then with the pheasants during Vo-Ag class.

“Animals are so kind and forgiving. Until I arrived at the Ranch, I had never been around them much. I love the animals, and I worked hard to get on the work crews with Gary and Mackenzie so I could be around the cows and horses as well,” said Mia. “If you had asked me what I wanted to do for a career before I came to YBGR, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you, but now I want to pursue a career as a veterinary tech or even a veterinarian. I want to work with animals and help them like they have helped me,” Mia reports.

Mia is back on track with school and doing well academically, ending the year as a junior with enough credits that she can graduate early. She will return to Los Angles at the end of the school year and is looking forward to starting her senior year with her peers in the fall.

“I am looking into college programs where I can continue to work with animals. I have even started to look at jobs at local vet clinics for this summer when I get home. I have the tools I need and know how to use them to have a bright future.” Best of luck, Mia!
