BOOK REVIEW

THE SECOND CURVE: Managing the velocity of change. By Ian Morrison - London: Nicholas Brealey Publishing, 1996.272 pages.

This book is baseti on the author's ten years of experience at the Institute For The Future (IFTF). The book draws on the lessons learned from working with corporations, as large as Fortune I ODs to nonprofit organizations, as they confront the fundamental structural changes ofthe second curve.

A company's flISt curve is its traditional business base representing the majority of its revenues. The second curve is the future -new technologies, new consumers, and new markets that will combine to bring about a sweeping and irrevocable (alternation) in the way business must organize and function. An organization might be doing fme in the flISt curve. But sooner or later things begin to change - one sense that one's flISt curve is not going to do it forever - and one knows that one must respond. That is the second curve dilemma

For example IBM has been on the second curve twice, first as a tabulating machine company, then as a second curve office equipment player that came to first curve dominance in 1960s and 1970s. Eventually every business has to face the second curve because it is caused by external change over which a company has no control.

The author draws a picture of a world in which transitions -from first to second curves, playa dominant role in determining the course of business on all scales. This book is good reading for business executives committed to moving their organizations forward in the twenty-flIst century, or for anyone interested to gain further knowledge.

Th e book is available at the Tun Mohd. Fuad Stephens Research Library.
