Bethany College begins a new chapter this fall

By TERRY PUGH tpugh@ccgazette.ca Two years after closing the book on its traditional academic program, Bethany College in Hepburn is looking to begin a new chapter in its storied history.

The facility is re-opening in the fall of 2017 with a new eight-month offering called the Thrive Discipleship Program. Based on a series of “learning modules,” the revised class structure is aimed at providing young people with a “practical approach to biblical learning,” according to Tessa Schellenberg, a board member with Bethany College.

“It’s a new beginning, definitely,” said Schellenberg in an interview on Friday, January 13. “The old program was very much focused on academics in the traditional sense.

“But when you look back at the Bible, and Jesus’ teachings with his disciples, that type of education was much more multi-faceted. It was all about relationship-building and learning from experience. That will be the focus of the new program we’re introducing this year.”

Schellenberg said the Bethany College Board of Directors, alumni and other volunteers began formulating the new approach even before the 88-year-old Bible College closed its doors at the conclusion of the 201415 academic year. Over the past two years, the foundational structure and focus of

the Thrive Discipleship Program has been fine-tuned to the point where it’s now ready to become a reality, she noted.

Applications from potential students are currently being accepted.

“Our goal for the first year is to enroll 25 students,” said Schellenberg. “Because we’re making it more relationally-based, we want to keep it to smaller cohorts, so that we have more staff to focus on each student. As the program becomes more firmly established in the future, we’re looking to grow enrollment to 50 students.”

The board is also currently interviewing applicants for the position of “Program Lead,” the head instructor who will shape the program and implement the learning modules.

“The program itself is likely to vary from year to year, depending on the students who enroll,” said Schellenberg. “It will be tailored to meet their particular needs and aspirations.”

Schellenberg said there are similar types of practical discipleship programs offered at two other postsecondary institutions, but Bethany’s version is somewhat unique in that it focuses on “local missions.”

“You don’t have to go to Africa or South America to do mission work,” she said.

“There are many opportunities in our own backyard. We’re looking at reestablishing the connections that Bethany had in the

past with organizations in Saskatoon and surrounding towns, as well as Indigenous reserves. But we want to build new connections as well.”

She said the local focus of the program is important, adding the students retain an ongoing connection with a “mentor” at their home church while living in residence and studying at the college campus in Hepburn.

“We want Thrive to form Christian disciples in an environment that is experientially-rich and culturally engaged,” said Trevor Rempel, Chair of the Bethany Board in a news release issued on Thursday, January 12. “Students will leave Thrive being able to process the world around them and be a disciple wherever they go in life.”

Over the past two years, the college’s main building has been renovated and office space is currently leased to businesses and other organizations. The facilities are also available for rentals. Income from this arrangement has helped the Canadian Mennonite Brethren Conference church, which holds the mortgage on the property, keep the facility open.

“There are some areas that need extra attention due to their ecological or environmental importance,” he said. “We’ll be looking for the public’s feedback on those areas in particular.”

Fallon said he’s confident the project will be completed by the April target date.

“We’re pretty much where we want to be at this stage,” he said, adding the process has helped bring the area’s municipal leaders - both elected and administrative together to collaborate on long-term growth plans.

Fallon said the level of cooperation between municipalities seen in this project is “rare” and serves as a model for other parts of the province and country. He noted the regional plan still has to be finalized

by April, and also has to go to each municipal council for approval.

Fallon said the finalization of the regional plan is really the end of the “first phase” and there will be ongoing work in the future. What form that work will take is not decided yet.

The Regional Plan is set to be complete in the spring of 2017.

By HILARY KLASSEN hklassen@ccgazette.ca A range of grants and funds are available to communities across the province, but those funds aren’t always accessed.

The Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund distributes lottery proceeds to eligible sport, culture and recreation organizations in Saskatchewan.

Some of these funds are administered by the RM of Corman Park. In their last meeting of 2016, the RM lamented the fact that they had close to $5,000 in funds left to spend. Not enough community funding applications had been received. The funds expire at the end of the year, and the RM was left with decisions about dispersal of the remainder.

Some projects that had already received lotteries money, got a little extra. But in fact, other communities missed out.

There are approximately 1,200 groups which receive direct funding support and through them more than 12,000 affiliated organizations benefit.

The Community Initiatives Fund (CIF) supports initiatives that enhance individual and community quality of life and wellbeing. The funds also support projects that encourage community development, access to programs and services, inclusion, and leadership.

The town of Langham recently benefited from CIF funds to the tune of $25,000 for the development of a Skate Park.

The CIF announced in December it will distribute over $4.5 million to 274 community projects. Their website,cifsask.org provides a link with a list of grant recipients. Interested communities can discover some of the types of projects being supported.

SaskCulture.ca provides a database of grants available for projects that support art and culture and sports in the province.

“Our focus is on getting strong public engagement at this time,” said Fallon in an interview just prior to a major ROC meeting in Warman on Thursday, January 12.

“The purpose of the open house is to get people updated on the regional plan, and to gather their feedback. We want to take everyone’s comments and concerns into consideration as we make the final changes to the regional plan ahead of April.”

The soon-to-be-unveiled map outlines some of the land use categories and descriptions that make up the regional plan.

“Nothing has been set in stone,” said Fallon. “This is a very highlevel, long-term map that can be changed in the future. But there are general areas on the map that have been earmarked for certain uses, and it’s important for people who own land in those areas to have a good understanding of what it means for them going forward, and how their land may be impacted.”

The public session, slated for Wanuskewin Heritage Park on January 24, will be a “milestone event,” according to Alex Fallon, Chair of the P4G Regional Oversight Committee (ROC).

A proposed land use map marks the culmination of several years of study and consultation, as P4G municipal partners prepare to wrap up the project in April, a year after its original anticipated end date. P4G partners include the municipalities of Saskatoon, Corman Park, Warman, Martensville and Osler.

The Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA), of which Fallon is President and CEO, has an advisory role.

The P4G project is examining the implications of growth on the region’s land use, population, transportation, utilities, services and finances.

Why we can’t dismiss caring for the elderly The health-care system must do better at addressing conditions that restrict how we live as we get old

A young trainee doctor recently proposed to me that it should. Health care is overstretched, she argued. “We can’t do everything for everyone, so why spend money on old people, who have little chance of benefit?”

For her, ageism is not all that bad - in fact, it’s a practical response to limited resources.

I’m unpersuaded. Ageism is not benign. We fail older people when we treat them, as typically we do, in ways that are at odds with how ageing works. Ageism masks our need to do better.

The challenge is the complexity of ageing.

With age, almost all diseases become more common.

Health care has become pretty good at assembling teams that specialize in specific problems, creating focused, subspecialized care.

And patients do best when their single illness, no matter how complicated and no matter what their age, is their main problem.

Subspecialized care may work very well for them.

But as we age, we’re more likely to have more than one illness and to take more than one medication. And as we age, the illnesses that we have are more likely to restrict how we live - not just outright disability, but in our moving more slowly or taking care in where we walk, or what we wear or where we go.

Not everyone of the same age has the same number of health problems. Those with the most health problems are frail. And when they’re frail, they do worse. Often, those with frailty do worse because health care remains focused on single illness. Our success with a single-illness approach has biased us to think that this is the approach we should always take.

When frail people show up with all their health and social problems, we see them as illegitimate or unsuited for what we do.

So would the young doctor be right if instead of restricting care in old people, she simply opted for restricting care for frail people? Should frailism be the new ageism?

For health care, such a notion would be self-defeating.

If frail patients are unsuited to the care that doctors provide, we must provide more suitable care.

Frail older adults consume a lot of care. Far better that those of us in the health system treat them as our very best customers. That would improve care for everyone.

No one admitted to hospital benefits from poor sleep, but (mostly) we get away with it in our fitter patients.

Not so in the frail, in whom it leads to worse outcomes: longer stays, more confusion, more medications, more falls and a higher death rate.

No one benefits from being immobilized too long. No one benefits from not having medications reviewed, or from poor nutrition, or inadequate pain control, or getting admitted when care at home would be better or in not clearly discussing goals of care. Just because the health system mostly gets away with it in fitter patients is no reason to forego change.

Changing routines to improve care will benefit everyone. But it won’t happen if we see frailty as an acceptable form of ageism. We need to invest in better care and in better understanding how to design, test and implement it.

As important as subspecialties are, by definition each subspecialty group benefits a small fraction of people. The skills required to provide expert general care, particularly for frail older adults, have been less celebrated. Compared to disease research, ageing and frailty are barely on the funding radar screen.

In any guise, ageism can be insidious. We don’t have to go far to find it. I find it in myself when I’m in a long line. It’s not the science of how movement becomes slow that saves me then - it’s realizing that slowness is not a moral failing, much less one directed at my busyness.

What we do in our health system now fails older people who might benefit if we provided better care. In that way, it fails us all.

Attitudes must change. Medicine should not be ageist. It shouldn’t even be frailest. We must work to provide better care for frail older adults, especially when they are ill.

It’s a small place, but you can still get lost...

Long ago, when I was a kid, Saskatchewan towns were laid out in a commonsense, grid pattern. The railroad station and elevators anchored the single-blocklong ‘downtown’ section, while streets ran at rightangles to each other in eastwest and north-south directions.

It was pretty hard to get lost in town.

Even in this area, communities were so small nobody had any need of street signs or house numbers. Martensville didn’t even exist until the 1950s when it became a hamlet; and Warman, established as a village in 1906, actually declined to the point where it became unincorporated in the 1930s, and didn’t become a village again until the 1940s.

But times have changed.

Both Warman and Martensville have become cities of well over 10,000 people each.

The informal paths between scattered houses have long since been replaced by actual roads. Property lines that existed only on paper were surveyed, marked and legally registered. Houses got numbered and streets acquired names. New subdivisions with crescents and culde-sacs got plunked down.

And before long all those little details that nobody paid

much attention to became kind of important.

But lumped in with all the progressive changes, there were some things that somehow got missed along the way, making for some interesting oddities today.

It’s not as though anybody set out to make things confusing. It was more like an organic mutation nobody noticed until it was too late.

Take house numbers, for example.

In Warman, 6th Avenue is the traditional dividing line.

Houses on 1st Street, both east and west of 6th Avenue, are numbered starting in the 100s and increasing as you go east or west. Identical house numbers on the same street make things interesting for visitors. It’s the same thing on 4th Street, with the added complication that the street signs at various locations indicate 4th Street West and 4th Street East, but there’s also a five-blocklong stretch that’s labelled just plain old 4th Street.

enue, has houses that start with identical numbers on either side of that line. Every house number from 501 to 514 is repeated on both ends of the crescent.(Houses numbered 516 to 527 are blessedly spared the duplication, however.)

Osler’s Willow Drive is another case in point. The house numbers at the east end of the street are all numbered in the 200s, except for three residences, tucked in amongst all the others, that are numbered in the 300s.

Apparently back when this was a new development in the 1990s, there were two schools of thought about how the houses should be numbered. By the time it was standardized, a few houses had already been numbered and SaskPower, SaskEnergy and SaskTel had already installed services and permanently registered the house numbers in their systems. Osler’s Willow Drive, by the way, was originally slated to be named 2nd Avenue North, which would have been really confusing because there is another 2nd Avenue a few blocks to the south that is totally unconnected. Another oddity in Osler is 3rd Street, which starts out at VCA Road running north-south, but takes a bend at one end and winds

Martensville’s system of naming streets is also very endearing. Main Street, which runs east-west, is the main drag. There is a 1st Street South, which logically, runs east-west and is south of Main Street. There are also, logically. 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Streets South, all south of Main Street.

However, it gets confusing because there is also a 2nd Street North, which is only two blocks long and is located north of Main Street, all by its lonesome, nowhere near 2nd Street South.

There’s 3rd Street North, which is a major artery, but again, with no connection to 3rd Street South. Similarly, 4th Street North is a tiny island two blocks long, 5th Street North is even shorter at one block, while 6th Street North is a major street. Record number of businesses entering awards competition

By TERRY PUGH tpugh@ccgazette.ca With nearly 100 nominations received so far, excitement is building for the second annual WarmanMartensville Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards..

Warman Chamber of Commerce Executive-Director Jaimie Malmgren said the number of nominations submitted for this year’s competition far exceeds last year’s inaugural event.

“The response to the nomination process has been very successful,” said Malmgren in an interview following a joint luncheon for members of the Martensville and Warman Chamber of Commerce in Warman on Thursday, January 12.

“Many of the businesses

were nominated in multiple categories. We’re now in the application process, and any business that was nominated has until February 1 to submit their application.”

An independent panel of judges will then review the applications and select the top five finalists for each category. The categories include: Business of the Year, Best New Business, Customer Service, Community Involvement and Marketing.

The five finalists in each category will be announced on March 15.

The awards ceremony is slated to take place in Martensville on Friday, May 5.

“Because it’s a joint event that both the Martensville and Warman Chambers of Commerce are collaborating on, we’re alternating the

awards banquet between the two communities,” she said. “Last year it was in Warman, so this year it will be in Martensville.”

The January 12 luncheon brought together nominees from the business community to learn more about the process, said Malmgren.

“If they were a first-time nominee or if they were nominated last year and didn’t make the list of finalists, they were interested in knowing more about it. We had last year’s award recipients who talked about their experience, and they explained the benefits to their businesses of participating in the competition.”

Malmgren said she expects most, if not all, nominees will submit extensive applications.

By TERRY PUGH tpugh@ccgazette.ca A 12-unit dwelling group consisting of four duplex and one four-plex bungalowstyle condominiums was given approval by Warman City Council at a meeting on Monday, January 9.

The condo development is located on a 7.22 acre parcel of land on Palmer Crescent in the Legends neighbourhood, and is in an area zoned R3, for higher-residential dwelling units.

The 12-unit dwelling group, which would occupy 1.68 acres, is the first phase of a proposed three-phase development.

Darryl Altman with North Ridge Developments said this is the first project for the company in Warman, and is also the first bungalow-style condo project in the community.

“Most condos on the mar-

ket right now are two-storey plus,” said Altman in an interview. “This is a new product that represents an affordable option for home buyers.”

Altman said the developer is aiming to begin construction of the condo units this year, likely in spring or early summer. The pace of development of Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the project will depend on market conditions over the next few years.

The development proposal will be reviewed by the Warman Fire Chief to determine if site access is adequate prior to a development permit being issued.

The current site design conforms to all zoning bylaw standards.

MARTENSVILLE PROJECT

North Ridge Developments is also proposing a 24-unit street townhouse project in

the Lake Vista neighbourhood of Martensville.

The proposal, which will be on the agenda for the January 17 Martensville City Council meeting, was discussed at the Martensville council committee of the whole meeting on Tuesday, January 10.

The project includes one four-plex unit and four fiveplex units.

A discretionary use application by North Ridge to the City of Martensville proposes a total of 24 units within five buildings. The site on Codette Lane, directly south of the new school, is zoned R3 for high-density residential dwellings.

The street townhouses include an attached garage for each unit as well as an additional parking space for a second vehicle. The buildings will be two-storey homes.

Over three days of competition there were 1240 scheduled matches running on eight mats. The next tournament is February 3 and 4 in Regina. Warman will host the SHSAA provincial championships March 17 and 18 at the Legends Centre.

By HILARY KLASSEN hklassen@ccgazette.ca Rob Swan is a man on a mission: to curl in every curling club in the country. At one point there were close to 1500 curling clubs in Canada. The New Brunswick curler’s current sweep of Saskatchewan includes stops at 34 clubs, as of Friday. One of those is Dalmeny.

The Dalmeny Club hosted Swan for a match between the high school junior team and a team representing a cross-section of the club plus Swan, at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday.

“The Club was excited to host Swan and be part of the promotion of curling,” said Ed Slack, president.

“We’re thrilled to be part of his quest and part of his team.”

Swan began the project with the more modest goal of curling across New Brunswick. That changed when a guy he was working with asked him, “you work across the country, why not curl across the country?”

The challenge began as a way to raise funds for Swan’s home curling facility in the village of Harvey Station, NB. “It has since become more about trying to raise awareness of this sport. For me, curling is the best sport out there.” He feels the sport doesn’t get the respect it deserves. It is viewed as something your parents did and associated with an aging population.

He’s out to change that.

Grade eight students on the Dalmeny junior team are helping change that perception. Their parents said all four are very passionate about the sport. After a game is done, they tend to keep playing for hours. They’ll probably continue as a team right through high school.

this club here has, it doesn’t give incentive for the club to grow,” said Swan.

Geoff McBain has been managing the ice at the Dalmeny facility for four years. He has played since he was five or six and eventually played competitively and won gold at provincials.

“The Dalmeny Curling Club is a really good close knit group of people. Everybody knows everybody, and after the game, people hang around for a few drinks. It’s very casual.”

The match-up with Swan was a case where the kids beat the grown-ups.

“We tried hard,” laughed McBain. “We had good form.”

Swan expects interest in curling to spike, now that it’s included as a triple medal event in the 2018 Winter Olympics. “Parents who want to get their child to a world level or an Olympic level in sports can do it faster in curling than any other sport,” said Swan. Doubles curling will be introduced at the Olympics for the first time in 2018.

The game is accessible to

a wide segment of society.

Patience, dedication and ongoing skill development are necessary to be good at it, McBain says.

It’s not just about throwing that rock, Swan adds.

“It’s like chess. When you move that pawn or throw that rock, you have to be thinking three or four shots down the road. Ninety-nine percent is a mind game with yourself in your own ability.”

Swan doesn’t ask for donations at any club he visits. “I steer them to donate to their local club first.” If people insist on donating to his club in Harvey, he directs them to his website or Facebook page under “Curling Across the Nation.” Curling merchandise available on the website also raises funds for his cause.

Each season, Swan collects signatures on his curling broom from every club.

Geoff McBain’s name has now been added on behalf of the Dalmeny club.

Following the game, Rob was off to Delisle and then Nutana for a couple more games.

Insights West, a leading Canadian market research firm, and Credential Financial, a national wealth management firm for credit unions and independent financial institutions, has released results from a survey conducted in 2016 on retirement planning that showed many working Canadians are extremely ill-prepared for retirement. The online poll of a representative national sample further illustrated how retirees who had worked with a financial planner during their working years were in much better financial shape in retirement than those who did not.

The Canadians on Retirement survey revealed that while 42% of working Canadians “have a plan” for their retirement, 30% have not yet set aside any money for retirement. Data further shows this lack of preparation may stem from a belief that working Canadians believe they have longer to plan for retirement than they actually do. 62% of Canadian retirees say they retired earlier than expected.

Not too late for flu shot: officials Health officials are reminding residents it’s not too late to get a flu shot as influenza activity picks up across Canada and Saskatchewan.

“We have seen an increase in influenza cases in the last couple of weeks, and we expect flu activity will continue through March,” Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab said. “I en-

courage everyone to get a flu shot if they haven’t already. This season’s vaccine is a good match for circulating strains, including H3N2.”

There were 590 lab-confirmed influenza cases in Saskatchewan between September and January 7. For information on public health clinic schedules, check your health region website.

A furious comeback fell short as the Saskatchewan Rush dropped a 13-11 verdict to the Toronto Rock on Saturday night at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.

The Rush trailed 5-0 after the first quarter and 10-2 early in the third quarter before launching a rally that was ignited by six goals in the third including four power-play markers. But Saskatchewan couldn’t climb all the way back as the Rock struck for two quick goals late in the fourth that cooled off the Rush.

The two-time defending NLL champions are now 0-2.

Rush goalie Aaron Bold, playing in his first action of the season after missing last week due to a suspension, managed 36 saves. Church counted five points (3 goals, 2 assists) while Matthews collected seven points (2 goals, 5 assists).

New superintendent for Legends Golf Club starting in 2017 season Matt Choquette has been hired as the new Head Superintendent at the Legends Golf Course in Warman.

He is stepping into some big shoes, as he replaces Keith Bell, who has been with the club for the past

eight years.

Choquette, who was formerly the Head Superintendent at Greenhills Golf Resort, joins the Legends for the 2017 season, Bell was instrumental in overseeing the construction

of the Legends Golf Course, and he and his staff also maintained the world class course on a day-to-day basis for the past five years.

Bell resigned his post last fall to pursue other opportunities.
