Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year, a view that I apparently share with our blogger, Drew Pontikis, who offers his ever-satirical observations on Halloween, bonfires and, amongst other things... a distinct lack of clowns!

But All Hallows’ Eve had a flickering tableau of gruesome and ghastly history in Yaxley and we can take a walk on the dark side on page 15.

How much do you know about the invaluable local and international work of the Rotary volunteers? One aspect of their work offers young people the chance to develop personal skills and a better awareness of problems that face the world today. Amaan, who is sixteen, went to Egypt this summer to an international camp studying Egyptology. Read more on page 5.

Rotary is a world-wide organisation with volunteers who work to benefit local and international communities. With you we can accomplish even more.

One way we do this is through Youth Exchange, enabling young people to learn about the world and themselves by facilitating exchanges and by organising camps.

Amaan, who is sixteen, went to Egypt this summer to an international camp studying Egyptology. All the young participants were guided and cared for by Rotarians from Cairo, and they went to a Rotary meeting.

As well as visiting and learning about the pyramids, Aswan and Luxor, all the students gave a talk to the rest about themselves and where

they came from. Given the fact that the camps usually have just one participant from any country, you can imagine how much they all learned about the world and each other!

Not many people – of any age – have the chance to share an intense experience with people from all over the world. The learning that takes place, around listening to and understanding others and appreciating how others live is just as important as the “formal” subjectmatter of the camp. Can it help bring about a more peaceful world? Maybe – we hope so.

As always it is all action at the end of the season, with all cup and league competitions reaching their climactic conclusion.

At the national finals in Skegness, there was not only disappointment for Yaxley but also for the Northamptonshire team as a whole, most of them losing out in the first round. However, Yaxley pair Robert Heath and Tony Belson did make it through to the semi-finals in the senior pairs, losing out to the eventual winners from Humberside.

In the league most of our teams, held their own in their prospective divisions, but there was disappointment for the Yaxley Hurricanes, in the midweek Over 60’s league, demoted from the Premiership to Division 1. This was mixed with joy for our Yaxley Seals who in the weekend league bounced straight back up into Division 1. Well-done Ray Bass and his team.

Our club finals were held on a cold Sunday in September, where

the star of the day was Les Sharp (pictured on the right), with our groundsman Norman Hill, who won the two-bowl singles. Les won three out of the four finals he was in. Both players will represent the club in the county Champion of Champions next year.

Our final game of the season the Presidents Bowl, was played, (before going to press) on Sunday 17 September, result of that nextmonth.

Overall it has been a very enjoyable season. We now look forward to our club Presentation Night, AGM and all the fund raising events that during the winter help keep our club going.

Yaxley Singers A very well received concert at Farcet Church, with an appreciative audience and a generous donation for our chosen charity leaves us with one outstanding concert to complete our summer programme. As I write this our musical director Marjorie and Secretary/ Treasurer Mary are hard at work on our winter Programme. The Christmas period promises to be a very busy one with firm bookings and enquiries already coming in apace.

Like a lion on the plains of the Serengeti, I have sat in the shade of a tree for the past four months waiting for the dry season to burn itself out and for the rains to return Finally after many months of sweating, wasps and school holidays, the rain clouds are gathering, the temperatures are falling, and the paths are blanketed in brown wet leaves. Truly, winter is coming (#obligatorygameofthronesreference).

October is my favourite month of the year. It is the time of the year that I can be comforted knowing that I have survived the disgustingly clement weather of the summer months, and begin the warm anticipation of comfy hoodie season. Although the shops have already decked their halls several weeks ago, I’ve got at least another two months to go before I have to start panic buying Christmas socks and Terry’s Chocolate Oranges and fretting about how I’m going to wrap gifts that aren’t perfectly square.

Bonfire night is just around the corner (clearly the best night of the year – don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise), but not before the joy that is Halloween. I mean obviously its more aimed at kids now than burning

witches and evil demons than it was in the olden days and I totally wouldn’t be into that anyway, there’s sooooo much to enjoy. As a fan of horror films it’s like (an admittedly scary) Christmas for me, with back to back films on for an entire week for me to enjoy.

There are few treats sweeter than the sweets bought to placate trick or treaters, especially when you’ve been sitting with the lights off and the TV turned down so it looks like there’s no one home and you haven’t had to give out a single one.

Best thing about October?

Remember this time last year – we were all terrified of the crazy clown thing that was going on. Thank goodness that’s all over with. It’s a comforting thought that twelve months on all we have to worry about is two fat man on opposite sides of the world with big red buttons with ‘Launch’ written on them.

Farcet fundraising a huge success St Mary's Church, Farcet held its Patronal Festival Weekend on 8,9 and 10 September and raised £2,800 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. A very fitting tribute to Maureen Beeby who was struck down by this illness recently.

Everyone at St. Mary's has been overwhelmed by the support we received from the local community in Farcet and the neighbouring communities of Yaxley and Stanground, as well as further afield, and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved who supported the weekend. The Yaxley Singers entertained a packed church at the

cheese and wine evening on Friday.

The festival continued on Saturday with a variety of stalls inside the church and a ploughman's lunch for anyone feeling peckish. The bad weather didn't seem to deter anyone as the church was buzzing throughout the day. The weekend ended with Evensong on Sunday followed by tea and cake. All in all a huge success! Thank you.

Winter is upon us and as the colder months draw in, we begin using our fires, burners and chimneys once again to warm our homes.

Chimney Fires continue to be a common occurrence in home fires in the winter months. We experience an average of 81 chimney fires a year in Cambridgeshire alone.

To ensure you keep your home safe from fire, follow our Top Tips below: • Whatever fire you have or fuel you burn it is vitally important to have your chimney swept to avoid a build-up of ash and soot • Avoid burning resinous woods (that quickly build up soot) • Only burn fuels suitable for your burner (eg: never burn anything other than wood in a wood burner) • Do not overload the grate/ appliance • Do not bank fires too high and remember to let them burn out well before you go to bed • Check the hearth, floor and furnishings near the fire for hot sparks/embers • Do not place objects on or over the mantelpiece which cause you to stand too close to the fire in order to reach them • Use a fire/spark guard to prevent accidental fires and make sure it

has the kite mark or conforms to British/ European standards • Inspect your chimney breast, particularly the roof space. Make sure it is sound and sparks/fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks • For each slow burning period there should follow a quick burn to dry out unwanted tar/creosote deposits and to warm up the chimney again • At the end of each burning season and at least once during the season the entire system should be cooled and thoroughly cleaned to maintain top performance.

Also ensure that Wood and Multi-Fuel burners are installed and regularly maintained by a qualified and competent engineer. You can refer to www.solidfuel.co.uk for further advice and information.

Most importantly, ALWAYS fit a smoke alarm that carries the kite mark or British Standard Number 5446 – test your alarm weekly by pressing the test button and know the life of your battery.

ALWAYS also install a Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm in the room where the burner is installed.

Autumn comes calling

The year moves on to autumn the evening and early morning have a distinct chill and the leaves on the trees take on their distinctive autumn tincture of red, bronze and golden brown.

I

n our gardens the flowers start to fade and many plants die back ahead of winter. The plentiful food of September has diminished and bugs and many other mammals seek out safe havens to overwinter.

Many gardeners now spend hours raking and clearing the falling leaves, trimming back the dying foliage to the ground but before you do this spare a thought for the wildlife in your garden leave some areas untrimmed, leave some areas covered in leaf litter and even create piles of dead leaves.

These habitats are where hedgehogs, toads, newts and

many of our bugs will look to overwinter. Bumblebees prefer dried moss piles so rake off your lawn and make a pile of winter paradise for the majestic bumble queens.

Leave hollow stems standing they can provide a winter home to so many bugs and if you have a meadow now is the time to cut, then rake off a week later after the seed has fallen but leave a few hummocks uncut so that grasshoppers and crickets can overwinter with ease. And finally remember that ivy with its late flowers is a great source of late season pollen and nectar for our precious bees.

What would I have done without their help?

I know I managed to say ‘thank you’ but I couldn’t express it as I would have liked. The Maxillofacial

Lost Friend I would like to thank the caring people who looked after me after I fell at the bottom of Windsor Road. team who worked on my mouth at the hospital for over an hour in A&E were amazing and at least one of them had been working for 12 hours that day already.

I’ll be fine! There have been some bad things happening in Yaxley lately, but the majority of people would reach out to each other and it this that makes me thankful that I live here in this village community.

I moved to Yaxley two years ago and have wondered what happened to the Hulls family.

I grew up in Horsham, Sussex, in the late ‘60s. I went on holiday to the Isle of Wight with my family, where we met the Hulls family and I became friends with Lesley. I visited Yaxley and she came and stayed with me.

For several years we communicated but with no social media back then our letters dwindled.

I have often wondered what happened to Lesley and where

she might be now. I would love to get in touch, so does anyone remember the family? They lived at 8 Speechley Road. Dad Ron worked at the brickworks and Mum Norma at the Norman Cross Motel (now the Premier Inn) and at the Empire Grill in the city. Lesley had a younger brother and an older sister.

It’s also national ‘Sausage Pizza Day’ and ‘Take your Teddy Bear to Work Day’, and I don’t think I’ll be recognising either!

It did get me thinking however: what would the perfect national farmers’ day look like? Well, farmers of course first look to the weather, and in mid-October we’ll be drilling (sowing) our wheat crop for next year, so a dry day with ground conditions conducive to that would be great. Business-wise, we’d need around £130 per ton for our wheat in order for our business to make enough money to invest in the future, and so that would be great. [Incidentally, the price is currently hovering at around that mark having been at a loss-making £115 last year and £100 the year before.

The next ingredient for the perfect day would be full government support. I’m not talking about free cash, or the

12 October is National Farmers’ Day. I think this may be one of those corny days typically observed by our American cousins, and even then, just those with little better to do.

I try to ensure that I’m engaged with people who live, travel, and work around my workplace, and

we try to chat when we can. On the occasions when we move sheep along the lane, or are moving large machinery, we do try to stop, to thank people for their patience, and to explain what we’re doing. The other day, a mother and daughter were waiting for us to move sheep across the road, and we were told “this is a great excuse for being late for school”!

Through the rest of October, I’m sure we’ll all be enjoying the last of the year’s pears, beetroot, and mackerel, and starting to enjoy the autumnal larder with pheasant, pumpkin, and swede on our plates once more. Sloe gin drinkers will be eyeing up the new season’s sloes as they celebrate national ‘Liqueur Day’ on 16th October, and I hope there’s good weather on October 13th too for national ‘No Bra Day’!

October is the month when the Church has traditionally given thanks for the harvest “safely gathered in”.

Sunday services and junior church every Sunday at 10.30 A farmer I knew well in Norfolk told me that it was about the only time in his year when he could pause for breath, take a very short break and reflect on the harvest and start to make his plans for the following year. Whether you’re involved in any way with the farming industry or not I hope we will all make the opportunity to pause, reflect on the past and make plans for the future.

The author of a book I’ve been reading recently decided to find 1,000 reasons to give thanks to God. She is married to a farmer in the US and it’s fair to say that she doesn’t have an easy life. Yet, she determined that she was going to deliberately find things to thank

God for throughout her year. Even in the midst of difficulties she was able to give thanks for the good things in her life.

I am not in any way dismissing the difficulties which many of us face through the year nor the pain which they bring. However, this author’s experience was that by giving thanks for the good things she was able to put her problems into perspective and not allow them to be “all consuming”.

Following the nasty incidents in Middleton’s recreation ground, we hope both the young men and their families are recovering from their ordeal and are able to move forward knowing that these were isolated incidents for our village.

W

e cannot speculate on what, when and why so will leave the police to conclude their investigations.

However this leads me to write about what we are doing in Yaxley more importantly for the young people of Yaxley.

Yaxley Youth Working Group For some time Yaxley Parish, Huntingdonshire District and Cambs County Council along with Hunts Forum, Yaxley Partnership, Police, St Peter’s Church and Luminus have formed a Yaxley Youth Working Group and have been meeting to make headway into understanding our issues and setting in place changes for the future. So what have we done:Queens Park Youth Club While the Yaxley Youth Working Group have put in place a number of minor activities one of the biggest was starting a Youth Club for Years 7 to 10.We have a venue at Queen’s Park which the Parish have agreed to a grant for use of the facilities.

Howeverit takes a contingent of volunteers to help run this and then

take the reins applying for grants etc. to make it sustainable and not just for the summer holiday. With the experience from District and County, the volunteers have proved magnificent and the numbers attending the youth club have increased week on week.

The club meets Thursday evenings 19.00 – 21.00 if wish to know more or can offer your services to ensure the youth club goes from strength to strength please contact Helen Taylor our Clerk and she will pass it to the relevant persons.

Yaxley Young Technicians A second action has been that the Parish Council have given access to the Austin Hall on Monday evenings 16.00 – 18.30 to a group called the Young Technicians led by Pino Soccio. This is focussed at 11 – 19 year olds in Yaxley having an insight into the live event industry with an opportunity of completing a BTEC qualification. There is a charge but Yaxley Parish Council have awarded a grant for the facilities to reduce this. The first session started on Monday 11th September. For

information youngsters from this group helped with the stage at this year’s Festival.

Young Groups on Middleton’s Rec One such group had been met and asked for their views to improve the facilities for young people in the Rec. They agreed to clear part of the Rec of litter and have maintained this to date.

Following on from this, the group met with some of the Yaxley Youth Working Group and came to our August Full Parish Council meeting. The group made their presentation, this was very well constructed and put over and they listened to our issues and concerns, finally the Parish Council asked this group to continue meeting with the working group and to forge an understanding with other groups on Middleton’s rec. To then come back to full council with suggestions and ideas to make improvements for all in Yaxley.

Believe it or not Yaxley young people are not as bad as portrayed on social media. However I am not naive in thinking that all are angels,

but then nor are all adults. These young men restored my confidence, in that the young people in Yaxley are demonstrating that they are willing to help shape a better future for all in Yaxley.

From shaping Yaxley to shaping Yaxley people It was great to see the outdoor gym finally being completed in Middleton’s Rec. My thanks go to all working on this but especially to Richard Dykes who responded to our call for ideas in the Yaxley Gazette’s May edition. Richard joined a sub-committee to investigate, cost and deliver what I will say is excellent equipment which is being used by many and yeswe havearranged for some lighting ready for the darker nights.

In addition, we continue to support the street sport DASH sessions on a Tuesday afternoon 4.15 – 5.15pm term time on the 3G, have extended the time the Multi activity and skate park areas are lit to 10pm every night and have been opening up the 3G during the summer holidays for a hour free use.

All Hallows' Eve is upon us, so let's take a look at the dark side of Yaxley and a flickering tableau of its gruesome and ghastly history.

THE YAXLEY RESURRECTION MEN

I

n 1830, William Patrick and William Whayley, labourers of Farcet were charged with bodysnatching from Yaxley churchyard. Together they stole the recently interred body of Jane Mason. Abraham Rist, labourer of Yaxley told the court of Patrick’s attempts to get him to enter a body-snatching partnership. Patrick assured him that the watchmen turned a blind eye when he carried the sacks from the churchyard if he tipped with a few pieces of silver. Patrick also said that a certain ‘Grimmer’ repeatedly offerd him money for the dead bodies.

A common purpose of body snatching, especially in the 19th century, was to sell the corpses for dissection or anatomy lectures in medical schools.

Before the Anatomy Act of 1832, the only legal supply of corpses for anatomical purposes in the UK were those condemned to death and dissection by the courts. Those who were sentenced to dissection by the courts were often guilty of comparatively harsher crimes. Such sentences did not provide enough subjects for the medical schools and private anatomical schools (which did not require a licence before 1832). While during the 18th century hundreds had been executed for trivial crimes, by the 19th century only about 55 people were being sentenced to capital punishment each year. However, with the expansion of the medical schools, as many as 500 cadavers were needed.

Crime and punishment Yaxley, in its past as a market town, had two places of public punishment: a pillory at Norman Cross and gallows at the Market Cross. Criminals from across the old County of Huntingdonshire were at times delivered to Yaxley to receive their punishment, with sentencing carried out from the Manorial Court at Yaxley’s Burysted.

In 1802 Jeremiah Askew, found guilty of stealing straw mattresses from Yaxley Barracks (Norman Cross Depot), was sentenced to stand in the pillory before serving two years of hard labour in a house of correction.

The witching bottle A very curious item was discovered at No. 51 Main Street in 1975 by Mr.E.W.Day. A Bellermine Jug or ‘witch bottle’ is a very old spell device. Its purpose is to draw in and trap harmful intentions directed at its owner. Folk magic contends that the witch bottle protects against evil spirits and magical attack, and counteracts spells cast by witches.

The dangers of travel The old roads to Stilton and Peterborough were once the domain of footpads, robbers and even highwaymen. Newspaper reports dating back to the seventeenth century recount tales of unwary travellers being set upon by undesirables. One unlucky individual in 1784 was attacked and bound, being found with a stone in his mouth to keep him from raising the alarm.

Witches & black adders Enid Porter’s Cambridgeshire Customs and Folklore (1969) relates an interesting tale of the Fen’s Black Viper.

The Black Viper [common European Adder] was common to the undrained Yaxley Fen and that black reptile, invisible against the dark peaty soil, would rear itself up on the approach of a human being, ready to inflict a bite which could be fatal.

George Borrow wrote in 1810 of an ‘old viper hunter and herbalist‘who he met with the Gypsies at Whittlesea Mere near Yaxley who had ‘a viper that had lain in his chest‘.

We now know of course that the Adder is not an aggressive species but the old Fenmen believed that the black vipers were attracted by the scent of a menstruating woman and so would often make their way into the rough shacks of the Fen Dwellers.

A Fenland tradition says that black vipers fed on snails, which they swallowed hole, the shells passing through their digestive organs and being excreted as a brown powder, known then as Viper’s Gloss. Records suggest that monks would use this substance to polish gold and silver and even as late as the end of the eighteenth century publicans used the gloss on their pewter tankards. The powder, which had an unpleasant odour, which clung to any place in which it was stored, was sent by Fen lighters to Cambridge, where it was used in the colleges for burnishing silver.

The Fenland Witches were reputedly able to tame the vipers and to extract their fangs, which were preserved in home-made wine and used to procure abortions. They would also feed the serpents milk throughout the Summer months before slitting open their bellies to remove the accumulated fat.

They would then sew up the snakes with horsehair and place them in a dark cupboard from which they would emerge unharmed the following Spring. This fat was subsequently melted down to make an ointment to treat ulcers and sores.

The ghosts of norman cross A much more recent ghost story is told

by Peterborough Museum’s historian and folklorist Stuart Orme in the book Haunted Peterborough. Some claim that the modern hotel at Norman Cross is haunted by the spirits of French prisoners of war incarcerated at the Napoleonic Prison Camp. It is also not uncommon for some residents of Yaxley to avoid the road past the old barracks at night in fear of the restless souls that they believe roam the site of the old camp.

Make a difference and become a Community Car Scheme Coordinator!

North Hunts Community Car Scheme are looking to recruit a volunteer coordinator!

This is a much valued service for those in Yaxley and the surrounding villages and provides a door-to-door transport service for people who do not have the use of a car and have difficulty accessing public transport.

Not only does it enable them to access essential services but also helps them to keep in social contact and avoid becoming isolated.

This is a wonderful volunteering

opportunity for anyone who would like to help in their community. The role would involve answering the phone and arranging a driver.

The scheme currently has a coordinator but would like to share the responsibility. The car scheme is supported by Care Network Cambridgeshire and Cambridgeshire County Council community transport officer.

We really do rely on the support of the local community in raising funds for our school, we are currently raising for new outdoor equipment for the children so every little helps.

With the help of the local community and a new team on the Friends of Fourfields committee we hope to

We also have a new member of staff with us this year too.Well, sort of! Although Miss Ellis is new to the team, she is not new to the school.

You see, Miss Ellis attended the school herself when she was a child. Now, several years after having left, she has returned, armed with a wealth of experience, an abundance of enthusiasm and a newly gained teaching qualification.

We know she will make a fantastic addition to our team, and will inspire others to go on to achieve their dreams, just as her own teachers did for her.

LAWN CARE AT THE END OF SUMMER As we come to the end of summer there’s plenty of work still to be done on our lawns to keep them looking great in the months to come. Sisters Sarah and Jo who run our local GreenThumb lawn care business give us some top tips.

Sarah and Jo say “we’re busy applying our late summer fertiliser and weedkill on lawns and we’re noticing the recent rain has caused a fresh crop of weeds to germinate; we’re on a mission to ensure these are gone before the end of the season”.

Sarah and Jo are also on hand to give advice on fairy rings, toadstools, lawn pests and brown patches on lawns which can appear at this time of year and they provide a free lawn analysis service for anyone who wants help with their lawn.

Here are Sarah and Jo’s top tips for keeping lawns in good condition and managing moss as we head into autumn.

1 Rake up and remove falling leaves regularly  A carpet of leaves left on the lawn will smother the lawn and starve it of light. This causes the grass to weaken and disease and moss will invade.

2 Continue to mow your lawn  Over the autumn and winter keep your lawn cut if the grass grows. It’s a myth not to cut your grass over the winter so on a dry day give it a cut on a high setting.

Grass left to get too long will become weak, it will be slow to dry which then attracts moss.

3 Scarify your lawn  Rake out the dead matter that has accumulated in your lawn. This can comprise of grass clippings, leaves, dead stems, roots and old moss all mixed up with other decaying or partially decayed organic matter. Moss loves this matted debris in a lawn which we call ‘thatch’ so it’s best to get it out. Scarification is the name given to removing thatch from the lawn with a machine and its best to do this over the coming months and before next spring. Sarah and Jo say “when we scarify a lawn we rake up and bag all the rubbish that comes out of the lawn and for a small charge we can take it away if our customers don’t want to deal with it themselves.

We like to make lawn scarification completely hassle free for our customers” 4 Apply a feed and moss control  Use a micronutrient autumn/winter feed that will give a stronger, greener, more robust lawn that’s better able to cope with the rigours of winter. “At GreenThumb we use a treatment that also dehydrates any moss that may have built up, helping to control it by slowing down its activity and keeping moss spores at a low level.

One or two of these treatments over the darker and damper months of the year is ideal” says Jo.  5 Treat any weeds with a selective weedkill This time of year, after all the rain we’ve had, weeds are still actively growing so if you want to get on top of them before next spring now is a good time. Imagine you’re snuggled up for the night at home, then BANG! It comes from nowhere. BANG! The room flashes. Where’s it coming from?

nother room might be safe. BANG! It’s here too!

You’re scared, you’re confused. BANG! Run to find the family just to be told, ‘get down’.

BANG, FLASH! It’s everywhere!

None of your usual places are safe but you find something to hide underneath and cower low to the floor, hoping that whatever it is won’t hurt you.

This is the experience many pets have this time of year – firework season. The bangs and crackles of the displays can be bewildering and terrifying for animals. There are many ways pets show they are stressed:

• Trembling and shaking • Toileting in the house • Inter-animal tension • Excessive vocalisation • Pacing and panting • Refusing to eat • Hiding • Clinging to owner A staggering 80% of pet owners have a pet who is scared this time of year with dogs far more likely to suffer. Fireworks are no longer restricted to a few nights a year, instead displays are held at any time over the winter season. Sound phobias in dogs can spiral downwards and with no let up. Some animals struggle to cope and can take months to get back to their normal selves.

Preparation is key Managing an animal with sound phobia can be challenging and can be approached with three methods; specialist products, behavioural preparation and with common sense.

Specialist products – pheromone diffusers and natural ingredients in a capsule designed to help to calm the animal. These products are most effective when given for at least a month before the fireworks start. For extreme cases a vet may prescribe a sedative for the safety of the animal and their owner.

Behavioural preparation – firework fear doesn’t just go away on its own, in fact it’s likely to get worse.

For the long term, behavioural therapy is recommended.

And common sense ...

There are lots of little things you can do while fireworks are going off to help your pet cope: • Keep them indoors after dark • Provide them with a den in their favourite place in the house • Ignore fearful behaviour, stay calm and don’t get angry – it might sound counter-intuitive but comforting a fearful animal only confirms to them that there’s something to be afraid of.

• Muffle the sound – shut the windows, doors and curtains and turn up the TV or radio.

• Provide distraction – perhaps a new toy or chew.

VAT on Roaming Charges This change takes effect from 1 November 2017 and alters the place of supply for VAT purposes of mobile telecommunication services made to U.K. non-business users (for example, private consumers) when they use their mobile phones outside the E.U. It aligns the U.K. treatment of these services with internationally agreed guidelines.

The changes means that UK VAT will be charged on roaming services used

by UK consumers outside the E.U. The intention is to resolve the inconsistency between the taxation of mobile phone use in the E.U. and that applied to outside the E.U. The change will bring UK VAT rules into line with the internationally agreed approach and it will also ensure mobile phone companies cannot use the inconsistency to avoid U.K. VAT. Whilst talking about roaming, mobile roaming charges across the E.U. finally ended on 15 June 2017 amid warnings to consumers to check their tariffs and remain aware of unexpected costs.

The charges that were abolished, means U.K. mobile phone users can use their regular allowance of calls, texts and data for no extra cost from anywhere in the E.U. The Roam Like Home legislation aims to prevent consumers receiving huge bills after downloading films or other data while travelling in Europe, but BBC watchdog has warned that differences between providers when it comes to the details of tariffs could lead to unexpected costs for customers.
