 Gemma Hearts We would like to thank everyone who donated and supported the William De Yaxley Academy fund. We have now fundraised enough for WDYA’s own defibrillator.

One of our donators was from a very brave girl called Olivia, who is a student at William De Yaxley Academy and who sadly lost her Grandad recently. Olivia asked her family and friends that rather than flowers could they donate towards the William De Yaxley Academy fund.

A special ‘thank you’ to Olivia and her family and friends who donated £390.29.

We are currently fundraising for The Duck and Drake Yaxley. A defibrillator and cabinet normally costs us around £1600 but we have been successful in getting a grant for £600 from the British Heart Foundation. However, we have been given a limited time to hold this grant.

We are currently refurbishing a defibrillator that was kindly donated to us. Watch this space as there will be more information on this next month.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a merry Christmas & a safe new year.

Age Well Club 25th Birthday Gay Davies (Hon. Secretary) 43 members attended the 25th birthday on 17 October and we were delighted to welcome our special guests, retired GPs Beryl Dennis and Chris Grant; the Chairman and Clerk of Yaxley Parish Council, Kevin Gulson and Helen Taylor and Linda Smith, our Honorary President together with her husband Paul. Unfortunately, Pat Thomas, who ran the Club for so many years was unable to join us, due to illness, but she sent a congratulatory card.

Everyone had worked hard to make it a special occasion and we had delicious refreshments prepared by Val Barker. Margaret Long had made beautiful floral arrangements for all the tables.

Brian Jennings donated the two lovely birthday cakes and Pat Batey donated and served wine and fruit juice.

We had musical entertainment

by Malcolm Church, who had us singing along to songs from yesteryear. Everyone really enjoyed themselves.

And so it’s Christmas once again, and yet another year goes by without me being prepared at all. It feels like five minutes ago that it was last Christmas and I was worrying about Donald Trump becoming President, Theresa May becoming prime minister, climate change, North Korea and Brexit. Thank goodness those days are over.

I am very much a child of winter.

I don’t summer well; hot weather does not agree with me at all, I don’t do insects, and I certainly don’t like the fact that I spend pretty much four months of the year sweating.

But winter – winter works for me.

I like to be wrapped up in a hoodie on a cold day. I like coming home on a dark evening to a warm house, and I really love Christmas. Halloween is great, bonfire night is great, Christmas is great, winter is great.

Christmas however, has a special something. It’s the fact that we do the same things we’ve done at Christmas our whole lives – we spend it with family. We eat and drink to excess. We eat horrible vegetables and put bacon on them to make them taste nice.

We listen to the same dreadful

songs we do every single year. We make regrettable decisions at work Christmas parties. And then when its all over and done with, we pretend to enjoy New Year’s Eve when all we’d really rather be doing is sleeping off a fortnight of excessive good living.

And so it’s Christmas. Just for the month of December we can all pretend that we don’t have any problems and that everything is great. I have a house full of children who are more and more excited every day that Christmas is one day closer. I have two kittens who disappeared inside the Christmas tree some time ago and the only sign that they’re still there is the occasional bauble rolling suspiciously across the living room. So I’m in a good mood.

I’m in a good mood and I’m staying in a good mood until January.

Merry Christmas, have a good one and I’ll see you next year.

Rotary Club of Peterborough Ortons Each Autumn nearly 30,000 young people from primary, secondary and special schools across the country unite in the world's largest youth drama festival.

Months of preparation culminate in exhilarating performance evenings; young people playing Shakespeare in professional theatres, raising aspirations and unlocking the potential of students and teachers alike.

On the evening of 1st November 2017 at The Key Theatre in Peterborough four local Schools performed their chosen plays.

The Phoenix School presented Romeo and Juliet , St John Fisher presented The Tempest, Nene Park Academy presented Twelfth Night and Swavesey Village College presented Macbeth.

Following an approach from the school’s head of Drama, Anita Pancholi- McCann Peterborough Ortons Rotary Club was pleased to be able to sponsor Nene Park Academy to enable them to take part in the Festival.

Preparations for the performance have been going on for some months at the School, and as the hard work came to fruition a large group from our club turned up to watch the evening performance and were rewarded by a very memorable and moving theatre experience. The totally partisan audience in the theatre created a really supportive atmosphere which added significantly to the experience.

Turn on the television or the radio or look in shop windows and everywhere there are images of happy families having a great Christmas time. It's impossible to ignore.

However, there are numerous reasons that someone might not look forward to Christmas money worries, family tensions, loneliness, isolation or mental health problems. These don't simply vanish when the holidays are near. In fact, these stresses can be worse at this time of year.

While some of us are celebrating with our families, others are suffering, often in silence. While some of us are struggling to find “that perfect gift”, others are struggling to find the next meal or desperate for the feelings of sadness and darkness to go away once and for all.

The holiday season is a time when so much emphasis is put upon joy and happiness that people who are struggling may hide their real feelings to keep other people happy. So, away from the idyllic images and all the hype around the festive celebrations, let’s look at how we can all really help, not just at Christmas but all year round.

Our November meeting is also our Annual General Meeting (AGM). At this meeting we review of our year and conduct our essential annual business. Before we got stuck into our meeting we enjoyed a talk and lively discussion with our guest speaker Marie Brown. Marie is an expert will writer hence the title ‘Who Gets Granny’s Spoons?’ It gave us all a lot to think about, as Marie discussed the importance of having a will, along with power of attorney and what happens if someone needs to go into care. By the end of the talk there were some very serious faces amongst the members, and although a subject not many often want to talk about it was good to discuss the subject and all its advantages and pitfalls. Marie was very informative and no question was too difficult.

Yaxley WI The demonstrator at our October meeting was Amanda who cooked paella which tasted delicious, several members will be trying out her recipe which seemed remarkably easy.

Our December meeting which is tickets only will as be a finger buffet, with entertainment by Sean Moyses (The Banjo Man) who comes highly recommended.

Bobby Scheme has a new Bobby Andy Cleathero has replaced Jeff as our new Security Advisor. He will be working in the north of the county Peterborough, Fenland and Huntingdonshire. Andy, who previously worked at HMP Peterborough, brings with him many relevant skills and in his past life worked for Fairline Boats as a carpenter/boatbuilder.

We are delighted to welcome Andy to our small, select team and hope that he finds the job as satisfying and rewarding as we all do.

Yaxley Group Practice Saturday Surgery Due to changes in GP services locally, mainly the new GP Hub at Boroughbury Medical Centre and the new Integrated Urgent Care Service (IUC) accessible via 111, we will no longer offer emergency appointments on a Saturday morning from December 2017. There are a number of services in place to deal with our patients’ urgent care needs on weekends and we willcontinue to offer pre-booked appointments at Yaxley Group Practice.

Repeat prescriptions can be ordered online or in writing and it takes 48 hours to process the request (please note this does not include the time required for your chosen Pharmacy to dispense the prescription). Please be aware that repeat prescriptions are not processed on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.

Reports, letters and forms can still be collected from the Practice on Saturday for an interim period.

Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust Psychological Wellbeing Service The Psychological and Wellbeing Service (IAPT) offers treatments across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough for those people who are experiencing common mental health problems such as depression, stress, anxiety, worry and low self-confidence. They can also provide psychological help to those suffering with respiratory (COPD) and cardiac long term conditions.

The psychological therapies offered are treatments approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). This means that the talking therapies that they offer are proven to be effective treatments for problems such as those mentioned above.

Monday 11 December – Thursday 14 December

Yaxley’s on-call firefighters will be hosting Father Christmas again this year to spread some festive cheer throughout the village for the annual Christmas Ride.

Now in its 45th year, festive firefighters will be taking Santa for a Yuletide ride around the village over four days, from Monday 11 December until Thursday 14 December.

On each night they aim to begin their journey at 6.30pm. The engine will follow a different route each night, as shown on the map.

Firefighters will walk alongside the engine collecting donations for The Fire Fighters Charity.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue It is the time of year when we’re enjoying a tipple with friends, cooking up festive feasts for the family and entertaining loved ones. With all the fun to be had it is easy to be distracted when cooking in the kitchen.

50 per cent of all fires in the home start in the kitchen and more than half of those are as a result of distraction whilst cooking.

We want to help ensure your festive cheer doesn’t go up in smoke this Christmas by sharing our tips below for safe cooking over the festive season: • Never leave cooking unattended • Do not cook when tired • Do not cook when under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication that makes you drowsy • Regularly clean the grill pan and oven. Built up fat can easily catch fire • Never leave anything cooking if you leave the house • Do not leave anything flammable on or near the hob – tea towels, oven gloves and even washing baskets can catch fire • Take care when using microwaves.

Fires can start when people put food in too long. Always read the instructions on the packet – never guess the time needed • Oven chips or temperature control deep fat fryers are safer than using a chip pan. Christmas is coming, and Christmas in Peterborough wouldn’t be complete without Christmas Magic, at The Broadway for one night only on Sunday 17 December.

St Peter’s Church Returning from a recent trip to London, I got into a carriage on the train where virtually every seat was reserved. However, as the train left King’s Cross, it soon became apparent that a huge number of people had not got on the train to claim the seats that they had reserved.

At Christmas, Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus and the time Jesus came to begin his journey on earth.

Of course, towards the end of that journey, Jesus died on the cross before he rose again and returned to heaven. Through his death on the cross Jesus has ‘reserved everyone a seat on the train’ to everlasting life. My prayer this Christmas is that we would all claim the seat which Jesus has reserved for us and celebrate accordingly. Giving presents at Christmas goes back to the Wise Men, who gave gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus.

There is also the tradition of St Nicholas. He was a fourth-century monk who secretly handed out bags of money to the poor. This practice still takes place on St. Nicholas' Day on the 6th December. Some people think that Santa Claus can be traced back to this generous Monk.

St. Peter’s Church, Yaxley secures £2,500 grant for roof alarm St. Peter’s Church in Yaxley has recently installed a roof alarm thanks to a grant of £2,500 from Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust (CamHCT). The grant was made possible by generous funding from AllChurches Trust Ltd and will protect the church against the continued increase in copper and lead theft from church roofs across the country.

aul Russell, Churchwarden at St. Peter’s Church Yaxley commented: “After a suitable tender process we decided upon the most advanced CCTV security system available. Yet, after discovering the costs to be in excess of £6,000, we had to explore which grants might be available to us. Thanks to the generous support of CamHCT, we were eligible to receive £2,500 towards the cost of the alarm and were able to proceed with the installation almost immediately.

“Not only does lead theft have a huge financial impact for us, but it can make the church building vulnerable to rain damage with the potential of causing long-term structural problems. The new alarm system helps us to sleep easy at night knowing that the roof has the best security system available today.”

The solution was installed by GBSG Ltd, a specialist security solutions provider, and supports intruder alarm technology with video verification CCTV. Footage of what caused the roof alarm to activate is reviewed by GBSG’s Alarm Video Monitoring Centre so that within seconds, it can be clarified whether the alarm activation is valid before notifying the police.

CamHCT offers grants and loans to help congregations look after their historic places of worship. Its main source of income is the annual ‘Ride, Drive and Stride’ event where each September sponsored cyclists, motorists and walkers visit churches, chapels and colleges throughout Cambridgeshire, often sharing the money raised between the Trust and their local church.

ure enough, my working day involves a fair bit of solitude, but I’m also around to see Adam the postman or Andy the milkman, I have the flexibility and occasion to bump in to people throughout the day, and to keep a watch on our village and community - to be the eyes and ears when others are out at work.

We try to always take the time to explain what we’re doing if we hold people up for a few minutes as we move sheep, or as we move machinery from field to field, and I love the fact that people are so interested in what happens on the farm – you have great questions!

Regular readers of this column (I’m hoping there are some!) will know that we sell lamb via our website (www.villagefarm.org.uk),

but one of my favourite jobs, and something I always look forward to, is delivering the boxes of fresh lamb to customers. We always try to delight them with extra goodies, recipe cards, spices, or such like, and the chance to stop for a moment and chat about the farm and the countryside, about food and cooking, or even just to say hello and talk about the everyday things, is something I always enjoy. We’ve just made our last deliveries for 2017 but are now taking orders for January next year, and whilst we’ll be working out how to continue delighting customers, the ‘quick chat’ will always be part of the service and is an important part of what we do.

Feed the bees not just the birds December is often considered the first proper month of winter and culminates with the festivities around giving and the closure of the old year.

T

his is a time of year when tradition again has it that people put out food for the birds, ensuring the ice is broken on bird baths and ponds, and exchanging cards often adorned with cute and cuddly animals in winter scenes.

Few probably think about the bugs at this time of year and again, traditionally, few if any can be seen as most are either in hibernation or in a period of stasis as eggs and pupae await the warmth of spring.

Recent years have nonetheless seen warmer, wetter winters meaning many species are not in hibernation.

Bees are often spotted scavenging for pollen and nectar in the heart of winter. This is a difficult and tiring task for our bees as flying is restricted by rain and heavy winds and the number of flowers in bloom is rare indeed.

When putting out food for the birds think about the bugs too. Can you add some flowering glory to your winter garden with early bulbs such as snowdrops, aconites and crocus which provide an early nectar boon through the winter.

You would need to buy plants already in the green, or budding, to add that dash of colour and food. Viburnum tinus and winter jasmine are two more winter flowerers of great benefit to add.

If all that seems too late and or too difficult, why not pop a jar of (preferably local) honey out in the garden with the lid off? You will be amazed at the number of bees you can spot visiting the jar, harvesting and taking back to the nest to see the winter through.

The dialogue within the film is very good and very clever, with some witty off the cuff remarks as well as some scenes that really emphasise the drastic nature of the film title. The bad parts Like all other recent superhero films, Ragnarok suffers from “Deadpool Syndrome”; it tries to be too funny. It’s like everyone now wants to add in some hilarity to their films. The funny bits are, for the most part, not needed and just makes the film less relatable. Ragnarok in Norse mythology is the end of all of the Gods & Asgard. Not really a lighthearted subject.

Still, despite the negative, Thor Ragnarok is one of the best Marvel films ever! A God(dess) of a film, nothing Ragnarok about it! 5/5.

The Norman Cross Rural District in 1970 Situated in the extreme north of Huntingdonshire, the Norman Cross Rural District existed from 1894 to 1974, comprising 16 civil parishes and covering 36,795 acres with 11,790 residents.

n 1970 It was bounded on the east by the administrative county of the Isle of Ely, and Cambridgeshire; and on the north and west by Northamptonshire, and the combined county of Huntingdon and Peterborough. Norman Cross, now within the parish of Yaxley, was situated centrally in the Rural District. The following information provides a snapshot of the district in 1970, four years prior to its demise.

The Norman Cross Rural District Council is administered by 21 members who meet on the fourth Monday of the month at the council offices at 18 Priestgate, Peterborough. Peterborough has been chosen by the Government for considerable development and expansion within the next 15 years.

In 1970 the district was served by the Eastern Region of British Railways with road access to London along the Great North Road (A1). The only circular motel in Europe (now the Premier Inn) is located at Norman Cross Junction with the A15.

The local authority has erected 680 prewar and post-war houses of traditional types with large-scale further council housing under construction. 1,798 private properties have been constructed between 1947 and December 1970.

A scheme for the clearance of ‘sub-standard dwellings’ is also under way. Piped water is provided to these properties by the Rural District Council/South Lincs Water Board with electricity distributed by the Eastern Electricity Board. Gas in only available in parts of Orton Longueville.

The fertile drained fens in the east of the district are used primarily for agriculture and rural undertakings whilst the brickyards are

transforming the Oxford clay into fine Fletton bricks. Thriving engineering works in Peterborough provide employment for many in the north of the district.

Residents of the district are kept up-to-date with news provided by the Peterborough Citizen and Advertiser, Peterborough Standard, the Hunts Post and the Evening Telegraph.

In Yaxley, residents are shopping local from Sylvia’s Hair & Fashion Boutique, L.J. Sharp Butchers, Doris Whitwells licensed grocer and Jean Nunns children’s wear.

H. Thompsons is providing coal and Westgate Motor Co. Ltd and D.J. Casbon Motor Engineers are looking after resident’s vehicles.

Sports and leisure activities include golf at Peterborough, Stamford and Oundle with sailing and cruising on the River Nene at Orton Longueville and Alwalton. Cinemas in Peterborough provide entertainment for the masses and there are plans for the construction of a new arts theatre in 1971.

Meanwhile the parish public halls are busy with entertainment, drives and public meetings. The district is regarded as the one of the best for fox hunting in the entire country, with the Fitzwilliam being of note.

In 1974 the district was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972. Most of the district became part of the Huntingdonshire district in the non-metropolitan county of Cambridgeshire, with some areas in the north becoming part of Peterborough.

Yaxley Infant School Yaxley Infant School praised for Key Stage 1 Results Staff and Governors were delighted to receive a letter personally written to our Head teacher, Mrs Edson congratulating us on our End of Key Stage results for 2017.

The letter written by Cambridgeshire County Council’s Service Director Keith Grimwade praised all the staff, governors and pupils for achieving combined outcomes in reading, writing and maths well above national averages. Thank you to our teachers and pupils for their hard work and dedication.

Mr Grimwade went on to highlight the schools, “Continuing drive towards the highest standards of educational achievement.”

Finally he also encouraged the school to share our successes with other schools.

In other news parents were invited to take part in Phonics lessons this month. Last year this proved very successful and many parents found this very useful in understanding how we teach

reading and ideas that they can use at home.

The Friends of Yaxley Infant School (Our PTFA) have been working tirelessly to raise funds for our outdoor classroom that backs onto the recreation grounds and the Year 1 outdoor classroom. So far they have organised: design your own Christmas cards, discos, “Phil the bag scheme” (donating old unwanted clothes) and the very popular Cake Bake! Thank you to all those involved for your hard work. The money you raise for the school is vital.

In previous articles we had advertised school tours for parents who had children starting in 2018. We were very pleased with the number of parents who took this opportunity and it was lovely to meet you all. What a fun, busy time our children have had this term, exploring Autumn, collecting and using natural resources such as leaves, pine cones and conkers in a wide variety of ways. We are now enjoying some festive Christmas activities.

We recently held our Christmas Fayre, where the children sung beautifully during their performances and enjoyed visiting Father Christmas in his Grotto.

Both staff and committee would like to thank our families and the local community for their support and we are very grateful for the amazing contributions to our raffle,

helping to raise money to buy new toys and equipment for the preschool. How much we raised will be revealed in next month’s Gazette.

Farcet C of E Here at Farcet we are very excited about the second half of the Autumn Term.

We have worked hard to develop our curriculum and the children are enjoying topics such as ‘Superheros’ and ‘The Circus’.

Pupils from Years 5 and 6 had a wonderful time on their Kingswood residential. They were able to take part in exciting activities such as archery and high ropes and had the opportunity to practice bush craft skills. Everyone had great fun toasting marshmallows on the campfire!

Fourfields has been in receipt of lots of exciting news this month. We were delighted to have been invited to appear in the Parliamentary Review for 2018 which is formulated by the Education Select Committee. We have been chosen to “showcase the school's best practice as a learning tool to the public and private sector, in particular to those in education” and “to demonstrate how determined leadership and innovative thinking can turn around organisations and to highlight how organisations/individuals have become outstanding leaders in their field.”

Clearly as a school we feel incredibly honoured and humbled by this invitation. It’s not often that a primary school in an area of Cambridgeshire can claim that they got invited to parliament, but we have! We are looking forward to sharing all the great things our children and staff get up to every day with a wider audience.

As if this didn’t make us feel happy, we received some more news which really made us smile! Fourfields has made it to the finals of the ‘National Happiest School Award’! The judges who looked at all the entries said that competition was fierce and that our school shone through. Mrs Blyth and other members of staff are so excited about attending the Awards ceremony at the end of the month and Mrs Blyth is already busy looking for a posh new frock!

Over the half term holiday,

Fourfields was still a very busy place to be as we had a new walking track installed. This means that all our children can take part in the Daily Mile Walking initiative. This is already proving to be very popular with adults and children alike and should help to keep us all fit and healthy!

We were really fortunate to spend the day with Jason Gray who has performed on the West End in productions such as Thriller, Starlight Express and 42nd Street.

Jason worked throughout the day with Years 4, 5 and 6 and the day culminated in a performance by Years 5 and 6 of a ‘mash up’ of Michael Jackson numbers. Using his dance experience in’Thriller’, Jason put the children through their paces in songs such as ‘Bad’, ‘Billy- Jean’ and of course the infamous ‘Thriller.’ It was an amazing experience for all involved. Jason helped even the toughest boys to see that dance could be cool and they all danced brilliantly!

Friends of Fourfields have organised a Christmas Fayre for Saturday 2 December 11am – 2pm. This will be an opportunity for children to buy a gift or two for mum, dad or brother/sister/ grandma/grandad from the trade stalls. Meanwhile, the adults can enjoy a cup of tea and a piece of homemade cake. We also have it on good authority that Father Christmas will be popping in along with some much loved friends. Come along and join in with the fun!

On Friday 13 October Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic visit to the National Space Centre at Leicester. During the day the children: Went on a simulator which is a fast and rather bumpy journey to Europa (one of Jupiter’s moons); watched an amazing film about astronauts in a planetarium where the screen was on the domed ceiling; viewed a real rocket that has been in to space and took part in a workshop to explore life as an astronaut during which they tested their reaction speeds when catching a dropped object, their balance and observed what happens to a marshmallow in a vacuum. They also explored the thermal properties of two materials using a thermal imaging camera. In the main exhibition the children explored all of the hands on activities including: what a tin of baked beans would weigh on different planets, seeing a cast of Neil Armstrong’s footprint, role play inside the Challenger space shuttle, creating a weather forecast in a television studio and seeing a

variety of artefacts which have been to or come from space. It was an excellent day and all the information that the children gathered has been used to enhance their cross-curricula studies.

Year 5 also visited the Bharat Hindu Samaj Mandir in Peterborough. Having studied Hindus in their RE lessons, it was nice for the children to see part of a daily service taking place. They were surprised that much of the service was sung. The air was full of incense and there were lots of lights ready for the festival of Diwali.

At the time of writing this, our Worship Council were preparing to lead the school in our Remembrance Day Assembly. Our lessons focused on the message of hope that the symbol of the poppy brings to all service men and women and their families, who have taken part in all wars and conflicts. • Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family.

• It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting – it won’t just be carol singers who come calling.

• Keep your personal data safe – and securely dispose of receipts.

• If buying bikes and / or electronic equipment for Christmas – mark them with your postcode • Away over Christmas – plan ahead. If you’re going away at Christmas be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Arrange for a neighbour to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is home.

Do not to leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like “we’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays” or post your plans on social media.

• If using outdoor festive lighting, ensure cables aren’t passed through windows, leaving enough gap for burglars to make use of.

It’s true to say there are hazards for our pets at all times of the year, whether they be seasonal hazards like grass seeds in the summer or everyday substances that are poisonous to our pets such as rat poison or lilies. But winter, it seems, does have more potential perils than any other season.

adly, every winter vets all over the country need to treat pets with poisonings, injuries and gut blockages, many of which are preventable given the right precautions.

Bones - choke or blockage As we treat ourselves to our lovely family roast dinners, please remember to discard the leftover bones correctly. We’re sure your pet would love nothing more than to chew on them but the pieces they break off can be a choking hazard or worse, cause a blockage in their digestive tract. Cooked bones are also likely to splinter leaving sharp edges which can cause no end of injury.

Chocolate - poison Most people know chocolate is poisonous to dogs but did you know it’s also poisonous to cats and interestingly, in high quantities, us!? The culprits are the chemicals theobromine and caffeine which naturally occur in chocolate. The difference is our body size and our metabolism. Cats and dogs are smaller than us and metabolise (or break down) the chemicals slower than we do, which is why we can safely eat chocolate and they cannot. How much is toxic to our pets depends on the chemical content of the chocolate (dark chocolate is higher than milk) and the size of the pet, but be warned

some pets can be especially sensitive and it can be fatal.

Raisins & grapes - poison Scientists are not really sure what it is in raisins, sultanas and grapes that is toxic to our pets. What is clear is that it can fatal! There also appears to be some irregularities in how much – some dogs seem to be okay after eating a whole bunch of grapes whereas others a small handful has been fatal. Best to keep those mince pies and Christmas cake well away from your pets.

Christmas decorations & presents - choke or blockage You name it, a pet has eaten it!

Who knows why some dogs eat inanimate objects but if they do it can cause blockages and need to be surgically removed. Also be cautious of any gifts of chocolate under the tree!

Fireworks and/or changes to routine - stress & discomfort The festive season usually means a big disruption to routine. Family and friends coming and going, cats especially can become stressed with the disturbance. These days, much to the dismay of many pet owners, fireworks seem to persist throughout the winter - meaning many more scared and stressed pets. There’s many things you can do to keep stress to a minimum – speak to our team for advice.

Classes, workshops, parties and clubs for children in the region Little Squigglers Peterborough has launched classes, workshops, birthday parties and after school clubs for children in the region!

Sam has always enjoyed taking her daughters to different clubs but was disappointed by the lack of opportunities for them to get creative and messy, hence Little Squigglers Peterborough was born!

Sam is excited to be using all her knowledge of art in education to provide an opportunity for preschoolers (and parents) to learn, play, get messy, and have fun!

Each week at Little Squigglers children are immersed in activities based around a familiar theme,

and often linked with stories and rhymes. Parents/carers work alongside their child exploring lots of messy things like goo, gloop and gunge creating fantastic works of art and enjoying being creative together.

Self Assessment tax payments Self-employed persons and other individuals who submit a self-assessment (SA) tax return should bear in mind that there are only two months until the electronic filing and payment deadline for 2016/2017 that is 31 January 2018.

If you have not filed the 2016-17 SA return yet, or at the very least crunched the numbers to work out if you owe any arrears of tax for 201617, you may want to attend to this as soon as possible. Otherwise, you will be shortening the period when you have time to consider gathering funds together to meet any tax payment on 31 January 2018.

On the same date, 31 January 2018, you will also need to make a payment on account for the following tax year, 2017/2018. If you miss the 31 January 2018 deadline for filing your SA return, you will incur an automatic late filing penalty of £100 that will increase to £10 per day if not filed promptly thereafter.

The hairdressing salon opened at the premises in mid July, within the previously owned ‘My Time Tanning’ salon. After a super successful first two months more space was needed so the salon moved to the old barbershop at the front of the unit, after they relocated.

The new salon is vibrant and welcoming with more experienced and award winning hair stylists.

The hair salon offers a range of services including cutting, colouring, extensions and bridal services, so is fully equipped to make you look gorgeous. The hairdressing team of three; Donna, Karis and Jade, have a combined experience of nearly 50 years, and thrive off creating the perfectly suited cut and colour to make you look and feel amazing.

Last-minute Christmas pudding Quick Christmas pudding recipe that can be made in the microwave.

Serves: 8+ Preperation: 50 minutes Cook: 25 minutes Difficulty: easy

You will need Large pudding bowl

Ingredients 1 apple (not cooking apple) 55g cranberries (sweetened), dried 125g raisins 125g sultanas 100ml apple juice (unsweetened) 85g blanched whole almonds (coarsely chopped) 1 lemon

115g light brown soft sugar 85g plain flour 55g breadcrumbs (fresh, white) 1 tsp mixed spice, ground ¼ tsp cloves (optional), opened 115g butter (chilled, cut into large chunks) 2 eggs 1 tbsp black treacle 1 tbsp brandy (optional) butter (for greasing), melted

Method  Grease a large pudding bowl. Peel and core apple then cut into pieces.  Combine apple pieces, cranberries, raisins, sultanas and apple juice in microwavable bowl.

 Add coarsely chopped almonds, 1 tsp lemon zest and 1 tsp lemon juice and mix well. Microwave uncovered on high for 2 minutes, then leave to stand.
