I can’t believe it’s the August issue already! The months appear to be flying by, with so much happening in Yaxley and the surrounding areas.

The new Youth Club has started every Thursday at Queen’s Park from 7pm to 9pm. Yaxley is also getting a new gym, so maybe time for me to get fit. More information on this is on their cover advert.

The YMCA is calling on local people to take part in its annual ‘Sleep Easy’ event to raise awareness about sleeping rough and raise funds to support young, homeless people in Peterborough. If you want to volunteer to help and experience what it is like to sleep rough, now is your opportunity.

Read about Sleep Easy on page 11.

Stuck for ideas on what to do in the school holidays we have a few ideas on page 13.

Our community is really thriving and it’s great to be a part of it.

It’s August again. My brain simply cannot process the fact that we’re eight months into 2017; if it weren’t for the fact that I’ve been so despairingly hot for the past four months I’d swear it was only February. Life flashes by in a blizzard of birthdays, Halloween discos and Christmas puddings.

I hate the summer – there’s been no sport on for ages, there’s bees everywhere and it’s been just so appallingly hot. Thank goodness the Americans are telling us there’s no such thing as climate change otherwise it’d be REALLY hot.

Everyone started out saying ‘ooh isn’t it nice that the sun’s come out’, but now the birds are spontaneously bursting into flames and falling out the sky as teeny tiny rotisserie snacks, it isn’t quite so funny anymore.

Even so, summer it is. I can just about cling on and know that it won’t be long until it’s autumn and everything starts to cool down again.

What I don’t know if I can cope with though is that the hot weather seems to have emboldened the cyclists.

You’ll know the good ones as they’re easy to spot – they’re out on the roads on weekday evenings doing about fifty, because they’re committed and prepared to indulge their hobby on a school night. I’ve got no beef with proper cyclists. The real problem is the ‘intermediate’ cyclist; the ones who

have bought the spandex and are damned if they aren’t going to wear it without shame.

Having bought into the belief that real cyclists don’t use cycle paths, they’re the ones clogging up the roads by slowly riding two by two; they care not that the traffic behind them stretches back beyond the horizon. That is not their concern – all the more people to check out their lycra wrapped bums straining furiously against that just slightly too professional saddle.

I have, on rare occasions, cycled to work. I will concede it’s quite good fun to pretend to be a kid again and for a brief moment forget that we’re adults with responsibilities and bills but it’s important to remember that no matter how much fun you’re having, you aren’t Mark Cavendish. You aren’t Bradley Wiggins ... You’re Mike from the cavity wall insulation company.

You’re not very good at it. So stop spoiling everyone’s day by pedalling slowly up the middle of the road gradually chafing yourself to pieces.

With the summer holidays in full swing and a heatwave upon us, we are warning young people to stay safe in the county’s waterways and make you aware of the dangers of swimming in open water.

With the sun shining, the public and particularly young people are more inclined to gather around waterways to socialise and enjoy the weather, and we have seen this during the past weeks.

The fire service’s #RememberRony campaign aims to educate young people about the risks associated with open water. It is backed by the family of Huntingdon schoolboy Rony John, who sadly died in 2014 during the first week of the summer holidays, while playing with friends in the Great River Ouse.

We want to remind people to keep our #RememberRony campaign in their minds before they get tempted to cool down in rivers and lakes and go to a supervised lido instead.

Young people often gather near lakes and rivers, some of which are not easy to access for emergency vehicles and many are actually private property, not designed

for public swimming and with no lifeguard on site.

It is important for parents and young people to be aware of the many risks that open water possesses, such as being deeper than anticipated, with hazards below the surface to get trapped on. Even though the sun may be shining, the water could still be very cold causing the body to cramp up quickly and posing a risk to you getting out of the water safely.

It is also important that if you see someone in trouble in water that you know what to do. Call 999 immediately with clear details of your location and if possible send someone to the nearest road to flag down the emergency services when they arrive. You can find the nearest life ring or anything that could help them float, and if someone goes under the water, mark on the water’s edge the place they were last seen with something like a piece of clothing.

With summer well and truly here, all of us at Yaxley are enjoying playing bowls.

Bowls Club To some it's just a game, but we all want to win and it's the competition and the company that gives us all so much pleasure.

The season is in full swing, there are still battles to be had in all the over 60s, midweek and weekend leagues.

The Yaxley open-day triples was on 17 July; going to press we are planning and praying for a successful day.

The club is through to two semifinals in the Monday Shield, and the Adams Cup. We are hoping to retain the Monday Shield which we won last year.

In the county competitions we still have several players representing Yaxley.

Through to semi-finals we have; Graham Agger and Joan Padley in

the mixed pairs, Les Sharp, Ian Flack and Joan Robinson in the mixed triples, Robert Heath and Tony Belson in the Senior Pairs, Les Sharp in the Vets singles, Kathy Browning in the Secretary singles; Already through to the ladies county finals we have, Joan Robinson and Marlene Osborne in the 2-wood pairs, Kathy Browning, Stella Dale and Viv Hempsell in the 3-wood triples, Kathy Browning and Viv Hempsell in the Senior Pairs.

A win at the county finals, will mean that the successful players will represent their county at the national finals, played each year in August at Skegness.

We hope that by the time of publishing we are celebrating in style.

Yaxley WI By the time you read this several of our members will have enjoyed a cream tea at the Sue Ryder Hospice in place of our usual monthly meeting. I am told they do the best cream tea in the area!

On 10 August we will be back to our usual meeting time and place of 7.30pm at The Lancaster Club, Main St, Yaxley. Our speaker will be Jenny Richardson, demonstrating cake decorating.

Members are asked to bring along a small pair of scissors, we don't know what for, but all will be revealed on the night!

Visitors very welcome.

Folksworth Art Club

We meet on Thursdays from 12.30pm to 4.30pm in Folksworth Village Hall to paint/draw in a friendly, informal atmosphere, helping each other when necessary.

Yaxley Group Practice Flu jabs This year Yaxley Group Practice has managed to secure flu vaccine earlier than usual. Saturday Flu clinics: will take place on Saturday 16 & 30 September 9 – 11am. No appointment necessary. Come for your free NHS flu jab and protect yourself against flu early! The vaccine is available for all patients over the age of 65 and those in at risk groups, who have been routinely vaccinated in the past, as well as a few new groups of patients. Smear Clinics About 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK. It's possible for women of all ages to develop cervical cancer. Regular screening is important for early cancer detection.

Special Smear Clinics have been set up at Boroughbury Medical Centre (Craig Street, Peterborough PE1 2EJ) on Wednesday evenings and all day Saturday for convenience.

Yaxley Amateur Players present Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward This performance takes place at the Yaxley Public Hall on Saturday 16 September at 7.30pm and Sunday 17 September at 3pm Blithe Spirit is a comic play by Noel Coward. The play concerns the socialite and novelist Charles Condomine, who invites the eccentric medium and clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to his house to conduct a séance hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, Elvira, after the séance. Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles's marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who cannot see or hear the ghost.'

New GP Hub provides evening and weekend appointments Patients registered with a GP in Greater Peterborough now have access to evening and weekend GP and nurse appointments at the GP Hub, based at Boroughbury Medical Centre, Craig Street, Peterborough.

Open seven days a week, the GP Hub is a new GP-led evening and weekend service where local GPs and nurses offer a range of services.

Appointments are available to book between 6:30pm and 8:30pm Monday to Friday and from 9am to 5pm at weekends and on Bank Holidays.

To book an appointment, patients simply need to phone their own GP surgery as they

would do normally and they will be advised of which appointments are available at the GP Hub. The GP Hub, which is run by a group of local GP surgeries called the Greater Peterborough Network (GPN), also provides specialist clinics such as cervical smears, wound care and blood tests as well as Healthy Lifestyle Coaches offering advice on diet, exercise and smoking.

For further information patients should speak to their GP surgery’s reception to find out more about booking appointments, they can also visit (greaterpeterboroughgps.nhs.uk), or find Peterborough GP Hub on Facebook.

The surgery will be open on Saturday 26 August in the morning only.

Festival yaxleycommunity

Farcet

This year St Mary’s Church Farcet wishes to donate all the proceeds from their Patronal Festival weekend (8 to 10 September) to the Motor Neurone Disease Charity to acknowledge the huge contribution given to St Mary’s and many people in the village by Maureen Beeby who was sadly diagnosed with this disease earlier this year.

Maureen has spent her whole life in Farcet and has been a member of several societies within the village and also St Mary’s church where she was recently both the Verger and a Churchwarden until ill health forced her to give up these activities which she loved.

Over her life she has been a much loved member of both the church and the village and gave unstintingly of herself – albeit in a very quiet way – she just got on with things.

We would like to invite businesses, individuals and organisations within the village to be part of our Patronal Festival weekend and to partake in the fundraising in any way they think fit.

Yaxley Methodist Chapel

Maybe you could hold a raffle, a coffee morning or even a comedy night, or just donate a prize for our Grand Draw.

Tickets for the Grand Draw can be obtained from any member of the congregation and perhaps you could sell them to family and friends.

Perhaps you could also have an individual charity box (available from Church) for your own private collection or a stall at the fete on 9 September.

The whole of St Mary’s feel that this would be a fitting recognition of Maureen’s devotion to both the church, the village and its people.

There is a concert on Friday 8 September at 7pm in the Church, with the Yaxley Singers.

Tickets are £5.00 and include wine and cheese.

On Sunday at 4pm there will be Sung Evensong with tea and cake after the service.

St Peter’s Church

August is the month when our young people are waiting for the results of their exams.

It’s a somewhat bitter sweet column to write this month because as of September my family and I will be leaving Yaxley and heading to the town of Portishead, near Bristol where I’ll be taking up a new role as vicar of the church there.

Anxiously wondering if they have the grades they require to determine their next step on the career ladder.

Results day can be stressful and an anxious time. Opening the envelope can cause a range of emotions with some elated and some disappointed when the results are there in black and white. I have always thought this must difficult when it is so public amongst your peers.

Many websites and television programmes and even Childline will offer help and advice. They suggest taking a family member or a good friend along on the day to share the celebration or to offer reassurance. Talk to Teachers, because it is their job to help and advise on alternative ways forward.

Sometimes success can be measured not by outcomes such as good exam results but how we react in difficult times and bounce back.

We wish all of our young people in Yaxley and the surrounding villages a stress free summer and success in whatever they do in the future.

We are excited for this new stage of our journey but are equally sad to be moving away as we’ve loved our time here and have made some great friends along the way.

In Portishead I’m going to be part of a team but will have a particular focus on working beyond the walls of the church and getting stuck into the life of the town.

One of the great joys of my time in Yaxley has been becoming a part of the village, getting to know so many wonderful people and seeing how the church can play a positive role in the life of the community. I’ve learned so much here that I’ll be taking into this new setting.

Holiday Club

I’ll be leaving Yaxley with loads of great memories. These include being slightly embarrassed as I won at bingo during a visit to the Welcome Club, being even more embarrassed when I forgot the words half-way through saying the Lord’s Prayer and of course the Beer and Carols event at the Three Horseshoes last Christmas, even if I was left with a Guinness induced headache the following day! By the way, if anyone is concerned, don't worry as I am assured that it will go ahead again this year.

I’d like to express my thanks to all who have made us feel so welcome here. We will really miss Yaxley but it will stay firmly in our hearts and prayers.

On another note, I’d also like to remind you that we are currently taking bookings for our annual Holiday Club which is open to primary school-aged children.

This runs in the mornings from 9.45am to 12.30pm in the last week of the school holidays from Tuesday 29 August to Friday 1 September.

There will be the usual mix of games, crafts, “stage-time” and much more. Further details and a registration form are available on our website. I’m gutted to miss it as I know how much fun previous years have been!

SLEEP EASY YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough is calling on local people to take part in its annual ‘Sleep Easy’ event to raise awareness of sleepingrough and raise funds to support young, homeless people in Peterborough.

T

he event will take place on Friday 29 September 2017 from 7pm – 7am.

Participants brave the cold for one night and sleep in makeshift cardboard boxshelters in the grounds ofthe iconic Peterborough Cathedral.

Jonathan Martin, YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Chief Executive, said: “‘Sleep Easy’ is a great way toraise awareness for young homeless people, while experiencing a fraction of what many of the young people we work with have been through.”

Curtis, who took part in the event last year, said his experience felt like a community coming together:“We slept in the cathedral grounds, the local mosque brought chai tea and snacks, local musicians played for us and the Peterborough Soup Kitchen kept us going with soup. There wasn’t much sleeping, it was cold and not all that

comfortable – but we could get up in the morning and go home. The thought of experiencing that every night, alone, is difficult to get your head around.”

Those involved in ‘Sleep Easy’ 2017are provided withfood, tea and coffee, entertainment to keep spirits up and cardboard boxes to make a shelter.

There is an entry fee of £10 and all are encouraged to seek sponsorship from friends and family. Those registering before Monday 31st July will receive a free ‘Sleep Easy’beanie. Children under 16 are free, accompanied by an adult 18+ with parents’ permission. All funds raised will go towards providing support packages for residents in YMCA supported accommodation at The Cresset in Bretton, Peterborough.

Last year’s event raised £6,500 towards providing such support packages. The event

was supported by Apprentice winner Joseph Valente and his team at ImpraGas as well as local Councillors Keith Sharp and Richard Ferris, Miss Catwalk Perfect UK, Peterborough Soup Kitchen, Ausani Islamic Centre, NACRO, Athene Communications, Ace Tech Training & Business Development and Skanska.

UROCK Theatre Company comes to the Undercroft in Hampton

UROCK in partnership with Eastern Angles have set up brand new drama and theatre classes for children and young people, delivering creative learning.

N

ationally recognised youth arts provider UROCK Theatre Company, has won grant funding from Arts Council England, which will allow it to relocate to the Undercroft in Hampton for a year, and work closely in partnership with Eastern Angles Theatre Company, who are currently producing exciting theatre in Peterborough: The Trials of Mary (14th-16th July) and All Wrapped up In Westwood (26th October 5th November) Directed by Poppy Rowley who will also work as Artist Associate of UROCK. In September, two brand new classes/groups will start, and the local primary schools will take part in a creative project in which young children will get a taste of live theatre experience, starting with learning the vocabulary of devising and appreciating performance work, and culminating in a visit in December to Lamphouse Theatre’s production of Peter Pan. UROCK Theatre Company has previously

been based in Fulbridge Academy and have been very grateful for their support as this has allowed it to develop the quality of its youth theatre, centring on a unique ethos, and tackling a range of work, which enables every member to make real progression. Over the past 3 years it has twice been invited to perform at the National Theatre as part of the Connections Festival, and several of its alumni have gone on to successful careers in the creative industries.

In September a new class entitled UROCKERS will allow children age 9+ to take part in imagined and improvised theatre.

Friday evenings between 4.30 and 5.30 in the Undercroft. This class will be fun and relaxed, with small numbers, suitable for those with some experience, but more importantly for those with no experience at all.

Also, the UROCK Theatre Company are recruiting new members to join. Here anyone over

the age of 14 is welcome, and the Company will work on Saturdays, between 10.00 and 1.00, starting work on 2 new productions where students can be cast in both: A new and original youth community performance in response to The Eastern Angles “All Wrapped up In Westwood” production Directed by Poppy Rowley November 2017, which will involve research & response.

UROCK Company will also participate in National Theatre Connections 2018 New writing production in February 2018 Directed by Di Goldsmith.

Who then is so exalted in rank, whether by birth or merit, that might not be proud of becoming a member of The Ancient Order Of Foresters.”

heir annual procession may have long since marched into antiquity but the spirits of the Foresters still linger in the parish of Yaxley, in the places where they once held court and in the hearts of those who still champion fraternity and charity.

Before the creation of the welfare state the Ancient Order of Foresters provided a safety net for families across the country, including the members of Pilot Court no. 1192 at the King William IV public house in Yaxley (now the RAF Lancaster Club).

Being a Forester meant the adoption of a duty of care to brothers who faced hardships “as they walked through the forests of life".

When a breadwinner became ill or unemployed the court would come to their aid and in the event of their death they would provide funeral grants and financial care for those left behind.

Membership offered both an insurance policy in an unforgiving world but also an invitation to a social club with its own fascinating secrets and lore.

Pilot court no. 1192 was founded in 1843

by Joseph Perkins, Jeremiah Askew and John Furnace and was a sister ‘lodge’ to Court Carysfort at Elton, the Proby family once again connecting the two villages. James Green hosted the first meeting in the King William IV on Main Street and meetings would continue to be held on the 3rd Tuesday of every month until 1939, when the venue was changed to the Public Hall. By 1851 the court had 24 members and this increased to a peak in 1901 with 365 members, before settling around the 300 mark until the late 1960s.

Similar to other fraternal organisations, the Foresters developed a dense mythology and system of rituals, elaborate symbolism and rewards. Their sashes, jewels and regalia draw heavily from historical and Biblical sources as did those of their second degree, the Ancient Order of the Shepherds. The organisation was structured around high courts, district and subordinate courts, each governed by their own officers led by Chief Rangers. Officer positions included the mundane including treasurers and secretaries in addition to the more exotic, such as Woodwards and Beadles. Axes, bows, swords and hunting horns played their part in general ceremony and initiation.

Membership rules were strict - “no person shall be admitted a member of the Order who is a bailiff or bailiff’s follower; who is in her majesty’s army or navy; or who is unhealthy, of bad character, lives an idle or dissolute life, frequents bad company, is guilty of excessive drinking, or is of a quarrelsome behaviour”.

The written history of the Forester’s begins with the expulsion of Adam, the first Forester, from the garden of Eden into the rude, uncultivated forests of the world. His descendants amongst an ancient tribe of Israel, developed unerring accuracy with the sling, the weapon which slayed the champion of the Philistines.

The Foresters believed that Britain was ‘conspicuous for the high personages’ and posthumously added many of the nation’s historical figures to their ranks. King Alfred was a Forester, famously seeking refuge in a swine herd’s cottage and supposedly not only burning

some cakes, but anxiously repairing his arrows.

Another posthumous member of the order was King James I, described by essayist Francis Osborne as “passionately fond of the chase, attired in the dress of a Forester, green as the grass he trod upon, with a feather in his cap, a bow in his hand, a sheaf of arrows at his back, and a bugle by his side, instead of his sword”.

Despite the secretive rituals and complex symbolism, the Foresters maintained a very public profile in Yaxley and the court, including its juvenile ranks, were famous for their parades along Town Street (Main Street). Proudly flying their banner and wearing their ceremonial sashes, the processions were an integral part of the annual village festivities.

Although today the main activities of the Foresters Friendly Society in the United Kingdom are governed by the Financial Conduct Authority and their offerings include savings plans and ISAs, the ancient traditions of the organisation still survive in functioning courts who preserve their rituals. Their association with archery also continues as official sponsors of the Archery GB Olympic and Paralympic teams.

Yaxley’s court amalgamated on the 1st January 2000 with court no. 1112 at Thorney and in 2014 they returned to Yaxley to take part in the festival parade.

And so as the world teems with vicissitudes, and the various monuments of mortality which we so frequently behold, the Foresters heedlessly march on amidst dangers and disasters, unmindful of their own dissolution, as if they conceived all men mortal but themselves.

Folksworth C of E The summer holidays are here, and before we welcome another group of new children into the school, we can’t help reflecting on the end of the last academic year. After an initial scare with the weather, we had a tremendous time at Sports Day. Our formula of team games in the morning and traditional races in the afternoon is always a success.

However, this year, the ‘staff vs year 6’ race was by far the most popular!

Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to provide us with the fantastic KS2 production of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ – as you have never seen it before! The cast and costumes were fantastic, and the sets really helped to transport us into the cottage in the woods. Well done one and all – we loved it!

Little Acorns This month at Little Acorns we have been exploring colours; the younger children have been getting messy exploring different colour paints, play doughs and shaving foam.

The pre-school children have been learning about how colours change when they are mixed together. We have been making lovely pictures to take home to show our families our brilliant colourful art work.

The children have been looking after the fruit and vegetable plants in the garden over the past months, they are now ready to be picked and prepared for the snacks and lunches.

It’s the final month for our school leavers; they have made us very proud over the last few months.

Their confidence during the leavers’ concert was outstanding, performing in front of their family and friends. We wish all the children and families the best of luck for their new adventure at ‘big school’!

Another year has whizzed past and it’s hard to believe that we are already celebrating another successful year and looking forward to the summer break. How exciting to think what the next year will bring!

Saturday 24 June saw our Farmers’ Market/Summer Fayre, held at school. As always, the children were very excited for their opportunity to soak the adults in the stocks and they threw their wet sponges with a glint in their eyes!!

Many of us were keen to enjoy lots of yummy food from both the cake stall and the BBQ. Stall holders added to the day as well as gifts that had been handmade by the children of our school. Even the Fire Service showed up and let children fire their water hose- very exciting! We are extremely grateful to the wonderful team of Friends who worked so hard to make the day happen and gave of their time so freely to raise just over £1500.

Sport was high on the school’s agenda during the summer term and there were many events which allowed children to show off their sporting prowess! Sports’ Day was a fantastic event which was enjoyed by adults and children alike with the

picnic on the field being as popular as ever for families sharing in the day.

Friday 7 July saw Fourfields take part in the annual A1 sports event along with five other local schools. This was held at Peterborough Embankment and Fourfields were ecstatic to be overall winners of the event for the 3rd year running! On top of this, Fourfields’ cricket and netball teams made it through to the county finals – another great achievement!

It is with great excitement that our library bus has reached its final destination and its doors are open once again! Indeed, it has been a long and eventful journey with some challenges to overcome along the way. We thank you for your patience as we have worked hard to create a reading space that is special and unique for the whole school community.

We are now looking for anybody who has any spare time in which they could volunteer their services on a regular basis in helping to keep our library bus organised and looking its best. Stretton Preschool At Stretton Pre-School we are so proud of our older children who will soon be moving up to their ‘big school’! We held our graduation parties in July where the children came onto the stage to receive their certificates and t-shirts decorated with hand-prints. They also gave a beautiful performance of songs to their friends and families.

Our younger children have been enjoying learning all about food!

They tested their colour and number knowledge and also used their motor skills by making their favourite plates of food, lunch boxes, paper pizzas and lots more. They even did some

potato printing and writing with carrots, and enjoyed making fruit kebabs for snack. They have also been showing us how amazing they are by attempting to write their own names, matching objects, completing puzzles, categorising objects and identifying action picture – A-Mazing!

Yaxley Infants

This term children were set the class challenge to make a model out of recycled materials. They had to use as many different materials as they could and work as a class to create one class model. What started as a small task grew into a competitive contest with classes making every effort to “Wow” our Headteacher and Judge Mrs Edson! All the classes excelled themselves working incredibly hard, classrooms turned in eco centres with children using bottle tops, peas and even Quality Street chocolate wrappers! Blue class made a dragon out of eggs boxes, Red class made an amazing pirate ship, Yellow class made a picture of a sunset, Green class made a treasure chest, Purple class made a Tommy Tortoise (our school character to represent positive choices) and Orange class made a beach scene.

After a lengthy deliberation Mrs Edson finally choose Yellow class as the overall winner but felt that all the children had worked so hard she gave rewards to every class.

On Friday the 30th of June all the children took part in the “Race for Life”. The school decided that this would be a great opportunity to raise funds for this great charity and remember Mrs Spicer who

taught the current year 2 children.

Children had to run around the circumference of the field behind the school grounds nearly a km and were given a medal for taking part. All the parents were invited to cheer on their children and we had an excellent turn out of supportive parents. As a school we have raised a staggering amount of money, in excess of £2000 pound!!! What an amazing achievement! Mrs Spicer would be proud.

At Yaxley Infant school we have animal characters to show the characteristics needed for effective learning. Children showed great perseverance, (Perseverance Parrot) and collaboration like (Collaborative Crab) to complete the challenges set this month. Well Done!

We would also like to wish good luck to all the children who will be moving onto their new schools.

Purple and Orange class you will be missed and we look forward to hearing how you are settling at your new school. In the next issue we will be celebrating the current Year 2 children as they share their favourite memories.

The sun is spoiling us at the moment and the wonderful weather is helping to make our end of year activities very pleasurable. Thanks to Mr Weston and his Total Sports team, we had a fabulous sports day that was a superbly managed and fully inclusive event enjoyed by all; not only did every child participate in a sporting event, they provided lively encouragement and support to their team mates. We also had a very successful A1 sports event at the Peterborough Athletics Arena: a team of children from all year groups, represented our school and gained second place against other local Cluster schools. We would not only like to say thank you to our children for their endeavours, but also for the way they represented our school. Well done, we are very proud of you all!

So we are now on 'count down' to the end of term. We are saying our goodbyes to Year Six, and are already welcoming our new Year Threes and their families into school.

Transition and jump up days have taken place and we are working

hard to ensure that the receiving teachers and support teams have everything in place for a successful start in September. It was lovely to see so many new smiling faces at break and lunchtime, as the new Year Threes found either their sibling or Year Five ‘Buddy’, and the way the Year Fives took on the responsibility of their new role with such pride, well done all.

The sunshine also allowed us to have a very successful Summer Fayre. Thank you as always to our parents, friends and helpers, who once again overwhelmed us with their support. Our Year six children astounded us with their business acumen; each group was tasked with setting up and manning a stall to raise as much profit as they could.

Once again the children stepped up to the mark and we had everything from ‘Name the Teacher From the Baby Photo’ to ‘Welly Wanging’ which became quite competitive on the leader board! But our winning stall, ‘Name the Teddies’, made a staggering £43 profit, so well done girls.

The problem with

It is August and writing an article about bugs in the garden it is impossible to ignore the elephant in the room, wasps!

D

uring August wasps are often viewed as public enemy number one as they swoop in on picnics and barbecues alike with irritable

intent.

Although wasps are much maligned, they eat flies, aphids, caterpillars and other invertebrates, making them an important insect-controlling predator. They are also important pollinators for some species of orchid and figs!

With a mouthful of wood fibers, the queen uses the saliva in her mouth to break down the wood fibers until they form a soft paper pulp. She then flies her mouthful of paper pulp to her chosen building site to begin construction of the nest. Wasps are amazing architects and master craftswomen (all workers are female), helping to form the soft paper pulp into combs of multiple hexagonal cells.

Wasp nests are home to some of our most beautiful, pollinating hoverflies.

I am just an aggressive drunk and recently unemployed addict searching for a fix and I’m more in need of a social worker than a fly swatter.

The social wasp’s lot in life is also cause for sympathy not swatting. The worker wasp is born into an apparent job for life – going out and foraging for grubs to feed the developing larvae in the wasp nest which will be destined to become next year’s queens.

Every time the wasp delivers food there is a reward of a sweet sugary fluid from the larva gradually addicting the worker wasps to sweetness.

Then, at some point in August, the developing queens all hatch and fly the nest to feed-up and prepare for winter hibernation resulting in mass unemployment and a loss of addictive sweetness.

The disenfranchised worker wasps fly off in search of substitutes often feasting on windfall fruit and exhibiting another unfortunate trend in that they are bad drunks as alcohol makes them irritable.

So remember, next time a wasp bothers your garden enjoyment, it is just a recently unemployed addict searching for a fix and a very aggressive drunk, more in need of a social worker than a fly swatter.

Caring for pets in

hot weather

While we’re all soaking up the sun and indulging in our ice creams during hot weather, we urge you to consider your pets

W

ith their fur coat, an animal’s cooling system is not as efficient as ours and they can quickly become overheated and dehydrated. They are highly susceptible to heatstroke - a rise in body temperature which can cause organ damage and failure which sadly can prove fatal.

Temperatures can even rise quickly, especially in cars and conservatories, when the weather is hot and humid (even when it’s cloudy). Signs of heatstroke include increased panting or open mouth breathing, disorientation, anxiety, pacing, excessive or thick saliva, collapse or even loss of consciousness. If your pet shows these signs move them immediately to a cool shady area, cover them in a towel soaked in cold water, and call your vet.

Heatstroke can be easily avoided by taking simple precautions: 

Never leave your pet in the car or shut in a conservatory, as even with the windows open, the temperature will still rise rapidly.



Always allow access to cool shady areas; don’t forget your outside animals, make sure hutches and pens at least have some shade!



Provide plenty of fresh, cool water (not ice water).



Avoid over-exertion; take your dog for a walk in the cooler early morning or late evening.

Heatstroke isn’t the only danger for our pets in the hot weather. With warmer temperatures come more flies and these can cause a big problem to our outdoor pets. Rabbits are particularly at risk of ‘flystrike’, which is when a fly lays its eggs on an animal and the maggots that hatch cause damage to the animal’s skin and tissue (which can happen within 30 minutes of contact with the fly). Check your outdoor pets daily for signs of flies and their eggs.

As Brits we’re not very good at applying sun cream to ourselves in the sunshine never mind our pets. Now it may sound silly to apply sun cream to our animals but their skin is just as sensitive. White pets and exposed pink skin on ears and noses are most at risk of sunburn and we all know how uncomfortable it can be.

As I write this, we’ve been harvesting for one day, but are now stopped, waiting for the rain to pass. It is my hope that by the time you’re reading this, we’ll be harvesting our wheat under blue skies, with no rain to hamper our progress.

t’s a very busy, pressured time of year is August. Every rain shower on a ripe field of wheat causes the seed to become wet and then dry. This process reduces the grain quality, and can significantly reduce the value of the produce. Multiple showers at the wrong time can ruin the crop, causing it to germinate in the seed head, and all is lost. This explains the long days, manic rush, the sacrificed sleep, missed social engagements, and self-inflicted baldness of the summer. But we will keep going until the harvest is done. I have heard of wheat being combined at the end of a very wet harvest on Christmas Day! Please not this year…

As August progresses, like the children returning to a new school year, we’re thinking about a new farming year. We’ll have been planning our crop rotations to best work with the soil and combat weed problems, and we’ll be carefully deciding whether to plough, or to sow the seed directly in to the ground after last year’s harvest. Sowing seed directly reduces the fuel used significantly, maintains soil

structure and drainage, and is better for the soil organisms - turning the soil with a plough, for example, can lose half of the beneficial earthworms to birds. This method of farming (minimum, or no ‘tillage’) is far better for the environment, but only really possible with the use of a chemical – glyphosate – which the EU keep threatening to ban (rumours of some back-door attempt to defeat Monsanto and GM crops), which would affect farmers badly (and you, if you use pretty much any herbicide spray from the garden centre). I do hope our governments continue to make decisions based on science rather than pressure groups of any persuasion, or political hue.

Anyway, enough of the kid politics; I hope you’re having a fantastic August, with a well-earned holiday, or perhaps enjoying sumptuous, succulent, seasonal sweetcorn, strawberries, or spring onions. Look out for new season lamb continuing at its best through August, and the berries: black-, blue-, bil-, and raspberries. Fantastic.

great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun.

With commentary of the weekend sporting events providing a summery background, what’s not to love?

Sadly, some barbecue bashes are spoiled through accidents that occur in the garden each year.

Last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue.

The most common types of barbecue-related accidents as shown by the HASS/LASS figures were:  Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame - 800.  Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200.

To protect you, your family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be fire-safety savvy.

The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel.

However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure you BBQ is fun-filled and not a flaming failure.  Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture such as wooden or plastic chairs.  Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage and never light it in an enclosed space.  Never leave a barbecue unattended.  Never let children too close to the barbecue.  Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues.  If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder.  When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential - ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy  Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair.

The demand for new homes is greater than ever and many homeowners with large gardens consider selling part of their garden to property developers or building a house themselves. We are often asked about the tax implications of this...

When you sell your only or main home any profit on the sale is generally exempt from Capital Gains Tax as a result of Principal Private Residence relief (PPR). Your ‘home’ includes your garden and grounds so long as the land is used and enjoyed as part of your main residence whilst you live there.

It is possible to claim PPR if you sell just part of the property, for example part of the garden. The relief automatically applies to properties of up to 1.2 acres (0.5 hectares) in total. It is also possible to claim the relief if your plot is bigger than this, as long as the extra space is required for the reasonable enjoyment of the house. However, if you have a larger plot, HM Revenue & Customs may argue that the sale of part demonstrates the land sold was not required for the reasonable enjoyment of the property, and so seek to deny the relief.

To ensure any relief is available, the land should clearly be part of the gardens or grounds and used as such until the date of sale, so it should not be separated or fenced off from the area you are going to retain. We would also recommend you keep evidence of the area being sold was used as an integral part of your garden (for example taking photographs of the garden in use).

Obtaining planning permission to develop part of your garden will not automatically prevent PPR being available and this may make the land more valuable. But at the same time, please be aware that if you purchased the property with a view to realising a profit on the sale of some or all of it, PPR will not be available.

Likewise if you decided to build the new house on your land and sell the completed property this could be viewed as a trading activity, meaning at least part of the profit realised is subject to Income Tax and not Capital Gains Tax. On a positive note, if you are able to claim PPR on a sale of part of your garden, this could result in the gain realised being tax free. Given the potential tax savings, if you are thinking of selling part of your garden we would recommend getting professional advice or talk to us as early as possible to ensure any necessary tax planning steps can be taken.
