Week Three

Reading: Kolerevic B. 2003. Architecture in the Digital Age

Kolerevic described three fundamental type of fabrication techniques in the reading. Outline the three techniques and discuss the potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling. (150 words max)

The three fundalmental type of fabrication techniqes in the reading are Assitive, subtractive and transformative method. Additive method can creating things by adding material to each other in a format which is layer-by=layer. People ues it in the 3D printing. As the Subtractive method, the materia can be removed in order to create indents, parts and form. Laser cutting is the one to use beam to cut or etch material. The disadvantage of the subtractive method is that it can only moved in the 2d. The formative method mainly uses the mechanical forces. Such as heat, steam to shape the thing as planed. The potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with modelling is that the fabric can directly design from the computer software. It can create more possibility to the designer to create a more complicated thing. What’s more, it is more flexible that you can just change the data script of the paramatric model.

Week Three

Surface Creation

At the left side, these are my first pannel and the grid. The main one reason is that the surface is too curve. Beside, I also design a complex pannel which also make the situation worse. (the third picture as shown) The pannel is too sharp which is not suitable and reasonable for the pavillion design. Bessides, the pannel I design can’t make 2D.

I also design another surface which is little curved. it is more reasonabe than before. Here are teh pannel that I desiged

Week Four Panels & Waffle

This is the MAKE 2D pannel in a iso view

The Waffle Structure.

I design two different surface in order to have the different funtion in the pavillion. The first surface is mainly about light and the other is more focus on the shadow. what’s more, the first surface also cancollext the natural light for the pavillion. The other side of surface is mainly about the air circulation system that to refresh the aur in the pavillio.. In some degree, it can also adjust the tempreature in the pavillion that to reduce the energy power. The most ideal situation is that warm in winter and cool in summer.

The waffle structure follows my surface. It looks like the ‘pisa tower’ and it also couldn’t fall down. Creating that kind of sense to add more fun on the pavillion. What’s more, the slope of the surface can created different shadows accroding to the movement of the sun. In the middle part of the pavillion, I left enough place to have a good quality of the air circulation and the sun light. Last but not least, the whole structure is “narrow in the bottom and wide at the top”. It can give a wider illusion that the whole area(height) is wireless extention.

Week Four

Laser Cutting

In this modulus, laying out the make 2d surface before baking them from grasshopper to rhino. Rearranging them which connected their edges together in order to shortnen the laser cutting time and reduce the use of the papper. These are the laser cutting file when I was doing the matric. I use the red line to show the part which are etch and black line as the cut line. I also ‘explode’ and ‘group’ the numbers. Because they wn;t be printed(laser cutting).

04

My boolean part design as shown above(01). When i doing the boolean part, i tried for several time to get what i really want. We can’t make the radus of sphere too big, otherwise it would be broken(pic 02). We also can’t make the radius too small. There is no interaction in the box between the sphere, so the comand ‘boolean difference’ doesn’t work.

Week Five

Isometric

In my isomatric view, i only use the sphere as the most important element. However, in my design, I use the multiple attraction point to change the inside structure. Look through my isomatric, we can see there are 3 different types sphere and some of them interect together. When seeing from these ‘holes’, you can see the interection is highly emphasized by the light and shadow. What’s more, it will change accroding to the change of the light to get a different view.

Task 01 Matrix I choose the view as ‘NW” ro the matric which it is more suitable. In this isomatric view, the matric can be shown in multiple details as well as see the overview design look. when I was thinking about my pannel, the first two point is the ‘light’ & ‘air” circulation. I will foucus on that point inc FINAL pages.

LIGHT

In this area, I started to think about the light in the pavillion. In order to immitate the real situation,I use my phone as the light to show the light from inside to outside. Because of my special pattern, thel light change into different path and some of them ‘leak’ from the paper. So, I will comsider to sude the material which is translucence on the most part of the pavillion. However, in the connection part, I design to use some thing that is clear , like glass. This pavillion will be white, because it can change color eASILY. In the picture 1, the wite paper is became organge when I covered some fliters on the light.

SHADOW I also use the same ways, this time I found the shadow of the pavillion is interesting. As we can see from the pictures I took, the shadow was like a tree and the bird nest which makes me think of the pavillion of TOYO ITO. Although the pannels have no similarity with the ITO’s pavillion. So, I decide to use the similar materials.
