Final Year Project

Thesis Statement:

The Independence Highway is a physical division between two completely different areas: Badawi residential neighborhood and the industrial zone of Corniche El Naher. The street level of Badawi is filled with car repair shops constantly annoying the residents. It also houses uneducated children of all ages. On the other side of the highway, Corniche El Naher is a ghost land with large wasted lots and no human interaction. The aim of this project is not to try and link these two separated areas, instead, it is to benefit from this division.

The stratetgy is to work on the street level by relocating the car garages, transforming Badawi street into a pedestrian shopping street catering to the residents’ needs, and providing the children with some sort of education. Other interventions will include creating more communal & green spaces in Badawi to make the neighborhood more alive, welcoming, and safe.

The materiality of the project was tackled in two approaches. The facade closest to the highway was treated with thick fair faced concrete walls giving privacy & ensuring less highway noise (F). However, the facades in the back were metal-cladded relating to the industrial aspect of the area (E).

Design VIII Project

02 Revived Beirut Gems.

The project tackles the old fabric of Mar Mikhael and Hekmeh neighborhoods with the old urban stairs that connect them. After a study on heritage collectives, 5 interventions were made on heritage sites in the area. The idea was to work on existing heritage buildings, either abandoned or damaged, to preserve them but at the same time respect their legacy. Some of the interventions included reclaiming these buildings for public use. A major abandoned garden in the area is also made more publicly accessible. All the interventions were made following the main objectives of heritage collectives: Awareness and Preservation from the constant threats our Lebanese heritage is facing.

15
General Plan

The restortation of the damaged old house and working around it made it become even more highlighted as a heritage element on Armenia Street. By creating this public terrace in front of it, public access was also achieved for the Tobaji Garden in the back.

Focus is also done on two abandoned heritage houses. In addition to turning them into a permanent heritage museum and an auction house, a further building was added as a temporary museum with an access to an underground theater. This museum reinterprets a courtyard house closed by blank walls giving a sense of discovery to the visitors.

Design VII Project

03Emergency Architecture.

The explosion of August 4th, 2020 caused extensive damage in the area of Mar Mikhael and left a large number of its survivors homeless. This project consists of offering an emergency housing building for these refugees by proposing a new way of living together, sharing spaces, and manifesting solidarity. The main program consists of sleeping units pushed to the main facade to create a shared open space where people can meet and socialize. The flexibility of the project allows to combine and split units to accomodate families of different sizes. It also allows to change the program into commercial shops for people who lost their workplaces due to the blast.

04Interlocked City.

The project consists of a pedestrian pathway integrating several functions of the program and interlocking the two communities on each side of the road. These timber volumes create interactions between people inside and the passer-by with the impression that the masses could be reassembled in various ways on the bridge. The exhibition spaces are an extension to the art galleries and museums present in Achrafieh providing cultural/artistic opportunities for all people. Studios and workshops form the main functions of the program with indoor and outdoor café spaces.

In terms of structure, the bridge acts as one huge beam supported by vertical elements on each plot and a floor-toceiling truss system all along; a diagonal light structure embedded in the walls of each unit works in tension to support the cantilevered units.
