fireplace inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright Often described as the greatest American architect of all time, and even considered by many the greatest architect ever, Frank Lloyd Wright’s work marks a turning point in the history of architecture. If we look at Wright’s projects, almost all of them had a fireplace at the center of the plan. Of his three homes, there were around forty-four fireplaces. Wright viewed the fireplace as the heart of the home itself, to him it was a symbol of three virtues- illumination, warmth and purification. When Wright redeveloped the concept of an American home in the 1930’s, he kept the fireplace, although in practical terms, was obsolete.

My design is a modern and personal interpretation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s fireplaces. In examining his work, it was noted that his fireplaces were usually constructed of stone or brick, and some incorporated additional natural elements such as wood or tile. In his early years, fireplaces were symmetrical, possibly reflecting the influence of the Victorian era. However, during the years of the industrial revolution, they became more asymmetrical and abstract, possibly a reflection of the shifting norms of the time.
