Material

Studio sam dunes, rajasthan

Studio 4

The site is located in jaiselmer, near the main road from north and south-west side. Contextual study involved climatic study. Program intended to design a cafe, exhibition area and a performance space by using steel. The studio project looked forward to explore steel as a material. to understand joineries.

People & Places

> Dharamsala,himachal pradesh

3

Program intented to design a institute for thangka painters. Thangka painting is a traditinal disciplinary art of tibet which require specifc light. The intend was to overlay masses in a way that it creates semiopen spaces such as veranda and terraces. And using modules and forming clusters to create gathering spaces / common spaces. And connecting clusters through typical stairs built across the contours to connect and designing cozy spot in between the path seen across dharamshala.

The studio brief was to design a community space for 32 families in the rural context of Uvarsad. The intent was to serve a collective living and making of interactive spaces for the community, where unbuilt is as important as the built.

The intend was to explore L -shaped interlocking blocks (in section) which allows exploring mass and void to create dynamic single-double height spaces by just taking out blocks from the interlocked stacking for community spaces and terraces.

internship 7

The project was comissioned by yennepoya to make a university in a 100 acre site in manglore. my work on the project was documentation, mapping and help to fgure how to approach design architecturally in such a rich in vegetation of varius spieces in this precinct and they had already stated growing medicinal plants for ayurveda and naturopathy, site had red soil, few lakes, streams leading to these waterboies and lotta unpenetrable patches.

These maps were made for the frst site visit to a 100 acre site in manglore to get frst hand impressions and documentation. This map was used for navigation and to jot dot down location and information about site, had gateway overlays to do mapping while trekking on site.

observatory

astronomical, geological, seismic... khadir bet, kutchh, gujarat.

postinternship 9

The site is located at khadir bet, kutchh, gujarat. This almost island surrounded by salt plains and water in monsoons, the plain sight of it till horizon the nothingness, the plot is located on the north-west side of the bet at the highest point of the the corner, elevation was necessary for the astronomical observatory, giving vantage to look around the scape.

structuring program, contemplations on activities, functions, needs, kind of spaces required, further materialization of thought as to appropriating areas for such spaces, and thoughts on contextual impacts on design.

astronomical observatory

primary beams for the dome were mild steel, secondory bamboo and tertiary is the bamboo splits mesh to support FRP sheet and for infllinsulation.

the upper platform is to house telescope. the slice in the roof which is rotatable helps one spectate in all direction with any azimuth and a vertical angle.

beyond this its get all technical.

as a designer to make observatory there lot of engeneering involved. have tried and picked it up from tecnical drawings of observatory .

for the love for acoustics

mandu, mandavgarh, madhya pradesh postinternship 9

this study was done in respect to the studio project which required understanding in acoustics as it was to design a music school. madu structures as made out of stone and plastered lime, and minimal openings as it is load bearing, and celebrated volumes give it a good acoustic nature, few spaces in mandu where designed to sing into.

visited mandu’s hoshang shah’s tomb which was under renovation, refurbishment, conservation at that point of time, i was lucky to be alone in the tomb and i felt like singing and such amazing reverberation time, the resonance made me feel so connected to the space and further the quest for acoustics. i tried pursuing acoustics for my research thesis project.

attempts to contemplate sound, reverberation time.

this study was to understand nature of sound and contemplate the reverberations.

for the love, for geometry.

from sketchbooks

across academics, whenever in breaks the pursue for love, contentment, these sketches, this quest for geometry and truth about nature of things ,to fnd substance in things.

this geometry of golden rectangle was taught to me by poppo pingle when i visited auroville, one afternoon, twig on the ground of an archeological site discovered by himself... and further the quest for proportions and geometry started.

basics // a square, drawing an arc from the centre of one of the edge, where the arc will meet the edges extention, the rectangle formed is golden rectangle.

attemps on deconstructing a square from a golden square overlayed diagonal from the half of one of the edge of the square before.

progressive dance. disorder gains order.

inquiry // if a square diagonally placed from the half of one of the edge.... this step is reapeated.... if this overlay of a sqaures gradually increasing in size, forming a golden spiral ?

4

sketching geometry, the rawness of it, when one give up on tools one goes on the search for basics even further, construction of a simple sqaures, circles to draw arcs, measuring with eyes, after a while one has proportions in his eyes. the eyes get the proportion of things it is the inquiry, the golden proportion, of scaling squares, further and further one learns simple tricks around the mystic proportion, and how complex one can make it adding layer by layer, line over line, then a arc, then a form, together a image of inquiry, hilight thhe inquiry the search for meaning in simple things.

and then the ends meet, it was nice crossing paths.

golden spirals are composed in a sqaure, projecting out of a common core.

a square added to a golden rectangle on its longer side makes a proportional bigger golden rectangle. these proportions of a square to a larger square, the fbonacci sequrnce and spiral comes from these proportion progressions, so the beauty is in proportions this to that, about balance, respect to what was before, overlay, juxtoppose, intersect, together a composition.

a line drawn, next line in respect to the one before, every move on paper is coming from the past action, one after other, paying respects to what was before - together a compostion of shapes, line, arc, dots, projections, ......

inpromtu, on the spot, there is a play one drew a dot, further to make sense a line, further a sqaure, further, proportionate larger square, again a square larger, now there are three in comparisson these squares are proportionately larger than one other. in continuous construction, lotta clutter of lines one highlights few to see what must be sought. . .

for the love for Chairs

from the every spaces felt loved. post academics 1

A chair!, (while looking it from a distance) what about it?, the form?, the material? the aesthetics, the texture, the feel, the comfy lookingness... would i sit on you? I would love to sit on you, why?

The comfort?, the ergonomics, that it is aligned to your knee/ the calfs bulge?, or m to tired and lazy to stand? Or it is better than sleeping/ more alertness and rest-full also, or i want to meditate with work, or be seated and good, is Sitting a luxury? Or a need?

One can argue that one can sit on a rock, or on the foor and wall at back why would one need a chair, again is it a luxury?, to work, to draw, to paint, to read a book, to look out of the window, ll to sit backwards with your hands on the backrest rail, to clean a top of the shelf/ fan, to play musical chairs? Ofc i need a chair! I like to be seated, the alertness, the occasional sleeping on a chair ( you wanna work but need a nap) chair, would want chair for reading, while chair-arms help me rest my hands holding a book, a comfortable leaning long chair that also houses my calfs, foot and head. ll need a leaning chair while it rests back up making you active and can stretch (offce chairs these days, comfortable, herman miller’s chair! ), would also want a bench for lying down when need rest, maybe at my studio, can house me guests and can be my sleeping bench not too comfortable cant sleep at work!)....

Some random line of thoughts about seating on a chair, the object, the need, the user, the activity, myself around chairs.

to consider while designing chairs

a template for a chair, where all the variables of the chair, i.e. the legs, the seat angle & the back rest angle, thats all the three variables i see that makes a chairs ergonomically / proportionately.

so this chair is designed to change all three variables, so it can be any chair ergonomically, for the designer to experience the proportions of it, one can experience the dimensions of the chairs designed, it is a tool, which i think will help me understand proportion better with respect to individual proportions.

10 / contemplations on posture, geometry & ergonometrics.

the chair in wood and cushioned cylinders, the ergonomics of this chair is derived from human form, to rest a body at 45 degree or ggreater angle- neck, back spine, bit of your gluteus, majorly thigh in this case, and a rest at almost near the end og calf bulge, and for changge to this maybe a foot at a certain elavtion from ground..

The intend of the exercise was to gain holistic unstertanding regardind the material used in the building. To understand the material and joineries while taking climate in account. By means of wall section and axonometric drawings.

Workshop main intentions were to explore paper as a structural material. Exercise like bridge construction, load testing, form making, joinery exploring helped more to know paper as a material. Main aim was to construct two 1:1 structures out of honeycomb sheet.

Construction of two structure with two different joinery pattern was challenging. First structure has MDF joinery with two strip locking system in it, with shear sheets on the edge of the honeycomb sheet. Second structure was purely out of honeycomb sheet, where each element interlocks with each other to form joinery.

Documenting ambli by means of mapping. The intend was to rise limits of representation and data collection - mapping tangible and intangible aspects like animals fow, ownership, vegetation, age of building, open spaces, shadows, economy, volumen’s height, strees heirarchy, singular buildings, mass void, street lights, walking time, topography, smell, sounds, memories, communities, street acessibility and more. Overlaping certain maps in different manner will bring holistic understanding of entire eco-system.
