crafting relationships between temporal and permanent communities

STEP by STEP examines the temporalities in the fragile territory of Sibari, Calabria. With the local population moving to the north of the country, the region is going through a process of de-growth, while also dealing with the tension of housing seasonal communities. With a focus on the actors and temporalities at play in the network of olive farming and oil production in the region, this project explores knowledge exchange and social coupling.

STEP by STEP draws on the local Italo-Albanian architectural vernacular and urban typology of the Gjitonia as a way to stitch together temporal communities as they find a more permanent life with the locals that are currently living here. The project consists of a series of interiors that house various functions such as a daily meeting room, classrooms for language classes, a renovated house for short-stay living, and a soap making studio and shop, which allows for additional employment for the social farm workers during the agricultural down season.

Modelled after the traditional Gjitonia, each interior space opens up to a shared exterior public courtyard, which acts as a thirdspace that allows for informal social interactions and knowledge exchange to occur. These exterior rooms accesed by vertical circulation stairs, are thoroughfares that bridge the public church square with the main entry road to the town. Carved out steps and landings create the informal social spaces that connect all the parts of the community center to each other. The site acts as a gateway at the town entrance and the new bus stop is strategically placed within the upper level courtyard activating the space through circulation.

The architecture is crafted by two opposing operations that repesent the two different user groups. Stereotomic carving of the public courtyards and social steps/platforms draws on the local context, and the use of heavy materials like stone and concrete reflect the rooted quality of this typology. Tectonic slices into the landscape emphasize the carving of space, and the corten steel panels that wrap around and grow out of the stone openings represent the temporalities of new users with the aging nature of the material.

The origins of the La Molazza oil mill, owned by the Minisci family, date back to 1946. Today it produces and markets extra virgin olive oil and condiments based on extra virgin olive oil and citrus fruits and spices from the area.

It is part of the Guarantee Consortium for quality extra virgin olive oil.

MATERIAL ECOLOGY

Tondino cultivar lends itself to hilly morphology of Terranova da Sibari territory. Other cultivars are Carolei, Nocellara and Leccino in smaller quantities. Some groves produce Organic and non-organic oils.

Sell 0.75 liter glass bottles and 5 litre cans. Extra virgin olive oil is made through pressure alone, without manipulation or chemical additives, unlike other vegetable oils.

HISTORY

2nd generation family-run business.

Now aiming for diversification through technology. Nearby oil mills are very traditional, but Baffa want to prove that oil produced by machines can also be delicious.

In 2000, made large machinery investments: a bottling line and pomace separator.

OLIVE POMACE

Waste by-product used in biomass and biogas plants (encouraged by EU Policy)

Exceptional suitability for combustion in heating and electricity generation systems. Sold at multiple scales: - 20kg bags to locals to heat homes/small businesses

- larger quantities to power plants, cement factories, and large industrial companies

Similar in shape to wood chips and in weight to pellets - so easily packaged, transported and distributed. Also not attacked by certain moulds.

TOWN

Santa Sofia d’Epiro is an Arbëresh town and comune in the province of Cosenza.

COMPANY

The mill is proud of their location at Sila Calabrese with soils of great structure, rich in skeleton and minerals.

The company has taken on a redevelopment project for its olive groves in 2005. The starting point was the rediscovery of the old olive groves management systems to understand where to intervene with new technologies and enhance their production. Stefania and Gianfranco started out with an advantage: they were born and raised in these places. The plateau on which the olive groves are planted has undergone significant changes over time. Already, between 1980 and 1995, thickening actions had been started on the old local arable system.

Shifting focus in-land

As a position on the fast and superficial tourism found predominantly on the coast, we aim to shift touristic attention to a deeper, more meaningful exchange of knowledge and culture of the entire region

Programmatic coupling to deal with fragmentation

As a position on the isolation and fragmentation of nodes mapped in this region, we intend to couple our programs along a network to overlap and include multiple actors

Abandoned structures as potential sites

As a position on the abandonment found in the region, we choose sites in need of a second life. This choice to focus on the palimpsests in the landscape is driven both by a desire to design sustainably and to honour the history of the region

Arbereshe housing typology

Gjitonia are micro-neighbourhoods that build up the community and form famil ial bonds between neighbours. Four/five houses are arranged around a central “sheshi” and one main house named the “Mother house”. Every unit is accessed by an exterior stair, so the sheshi becomes an extension of the private interior. The stairs act as social platforms where informal interacts can occur and the sheshi is the thirdspace where domestic work, and transfer of knowledge, happens.

Upper Level

The upper level courtyard, modelled after the Arbereshe “seshi”, serves as a connection between the church piazza and the entrance into the town at street level. The new bus stop is placed here, so this upper level court becomes the new entrance point and allows for easier access onto the raised church platform. The olive oil soap workshop and its shop surround the courtyard, and therefore, have a direct link with the weekly market that is set up on the piazza. The soap workshop creates an oppor tunity for additional work for the social farm workers during the down sea son, as well as an additional use for lower quality olive oil. The courtyard is a crafted public space that carves stone to allow for a stepped series of platforms that become seating and spill into the interiors as working counters. Corten steel slices the landscape on the commercial side to carve out the social space.

This courtyard houses to “Mother house”, which is the main building with the meet ing room and kitchenette on the upper floor for the social farm workers and a classroom on the lower level for language and skills classes. The shortstay residences, which are renovated houses that are currently abandonned, are also accessed from the courtyard. The corten steel, again, slices through the courtyard connecting the two levels, and also creates a small stair that brings one to the lowest street off of the court. Tectonic Slices

The site of San Giorgio Albanese can be seen as a model or test ground for other social farm community centers around the territory. San Giorgio Albanese is the test location due to itsproximity to other Italo-Albanian towns, as well as the unsuccessful municipal oil mill, which can easily be converted into a social farm model. Conceived as a model projecct, in the future these tectonic slices can populate the territory to connect more temporal and permanent communites, while acting as added elements onto rooted typologies.
