MUSTAFA KEMAL ATATĂœRK Ataturk is the national hero of Turkey. He was born in 1881 in Thessaloniki. His background was military, and he served in various posts in the Ottoman army during the First World War.

Atatürk led the Turkish people in the War of Independence (1919-1923) against the allied occupiers. After numerous victories by Turkish forces on many fronts between 1919 and 1922, the occupying forces were defeated. On the 24th of July 1923, with the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne (Lozan Antlaşması ) the independence of the new Turkish state was internationally recognized. On the 29th of October 1923, Atatürk declared the new Turkish state a Republic. Following the declaration of the Republic, Mustafa Kemal was elected Turkey's first President.

Mustafa Kemal - first President of Turkey, introduced many radical reforms for a modern, secular and democratic country. AtatĂźrk and his associates regarded both religious rules and traditional cultural practices as hindrances to the creation a modern society.

Many people in Turkey celebrate Republic Day on October 29 by attending performances and participating in traditional processions with flags and musical bands. The Turkish Republic’s founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk proclaimed Republic Day as Turkey’s most important holiday.
