Welcome to the YJFL's Representative Program The YJFL values the development of all players, with our competition providing an opportunity for all our boys & girls to learn important lessons through the sport they love. The representative program provides the opportunity for our best players to test themselves against other good players, and play with players in better teams, that will enable them to build new skills. An important part of the program is the exposure to new coaches & methods, and of course friendships with other players that will hopefully last for a long time. Congratulations on being selected, and best wishes from all at the YJFL for the games ahead. We hope you keep playing Australian football for years to come! Tim Murray YJFL CEO The Yarra Junior Football League has a proud history when it comes to representative football programs. After a year without football in 2020, re-establishing our Yarra Magpies Academy programs in 2021 was important to us. We have been thrilled with the quality of coaches who have worked in the program, and with the attitude and commitment of our players. The matches are the culmination of the program. We are grateful that the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League have partnered with us for a series of matches in the July school holidays for some of our boys and girls programs. Just as we are, the MPJFL are a dedicated junior competition, and we share a similar philosophy when it comes to junior talent programs. We look forward to working together in talent programs for many years to come. I thank you for your support of our 2021 program and hope you enjoy the exhibition of football that our teams put together. Brad Jamison YJFL Football Operations Manager

Under 14 Girls Match

Match Preview

The program started with a ‘draft combine’ experience in April, followed by a weekly training program on a Wednesday night. Despite the disruption with the COVID lockdown, the enthusiasm shown by the girls on both sides of the lockdown has been impressive. The YJFL has an exciting few years ahead with the talent coming through in this age group sure to provide some great football over the next four or five years.

Pocket Profile

The squad was fortunate to have Collingwood AFLW star Bri Davey join as an assistant coach, not only teaching the girls some valuable football skills but providing a role model for the girls in the program. We look forward to finishing this year’s academy with a match where we see the best Under 14 girls in the YJFL on the field at the same time.

Our focus as coaches throughout the YJFL training sessions has been encouraging the girls to highlight their football strengths individually, while also providing them with an opportunity to learn a new skill or football concept to help them continue to improve. The players eagerness to listen and apply the coaching feedback is something that we have been impressed with and will continue to help these players in their football future.

Under 13 Boys Match

Match Preview

It has been a great experience taking the Under 13 YJFL representative program this year, with so much talent around the competition, very strong performances were seen throughout the sessions. The boys brought a great attitude to every session and were intent on learning and bettering themselves surrounded by some really good players.

yarrajfl.org.au

The quality of the sessions were as high as I have experienced for this age group with both application and skill level a standout. We look forward to our last training sessions and our intraclub match coming up which will be a great reflection of the talent in the group, and I expect to see some standout performances from those who have improved as part of this program. - Head Coach, Vinnie Dattoli

Under 14 Boys Match

Match Preview

The Under 14 Yarra Magpies Program saw 120 kids trial to show their talent with a goal of gaining a spot in the final squad of 60 players. The program involved 10 training sessions with a purpose of developing the group individually and creating a Team Mentality to prepare for a game against the Mornington Peninsula League to see where our groups development compares to other geographical regions. My purpose in having the role of Head Coach was to create an environment of professionalism, mateship, development and understanding of Game Sense and to provide knowledge from various experts that will help players understand what is involved in reaching their goals of being the Best Footballer and Best Person they can be. We conducted and replicated the “AFL Combine Testing” for all players to give them a “gauge” of where they currently sit compared to 17 and 18 year old draft hopefuls and where they need to get to if they have aspirations to play AFL in years to come. The results were super impressive, and also highlighted that these

boys not only have great football skills but athletically they have many talents. We were also lucky enough to have Tom Mitchell (Hawthorn Brownlow Medalist) address the group and give an insight into off field behaviours and routines required to be at your optimum on match day. It reinforced to the group the dedication required to play at the highest level. We also engaged a strength and conditioning coach along with an AFL Club recruiter to address the boys and pass on knowledge of preparation and attributes that are sort by AFL Clubs when recruiting at the Draft. The commitment of the entire playing group and assistant coaches throughout the program was fantastic and most of all the respect and new friendships the boys have made with boys from other clubs throughout the Yarra League was great to see. I look forward to the coming years in watching closely the development of each player involved in the program and I am sure in 3-4 years that many names will be read out at the National AFL Draft. - Head Coach, Brett Chandler Who is your biggest football influence?: Ken Hunter and my dad What is your favourite dinner the night before a game?: Spaghetti Bolognese
