LEAGUE PATRON The Yarra Junior Football League is honoured to have Luke Power as the league’s Patron. We thank Luke for his continued contribution to the YJFL. Luke played for Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup and was pick number 5 in the 1997 draft. Luke played for the Brisbane Lions from 19982011 and Greater Western Sydney Giants in 2012 and played a total of 302 games. He was a member of the 2001, 2001 and 2003 Brisbane premiership teams. Luke has fantastic leadership skills and experience as he was Brisbane’s co-captain from 2007-2008 and Greater Western Sydney cocaptain in 2012. Luke’s individual achievements include All-Australian in 2005 and AFL Players Association Madden Medal in 2012. Luke has had previous coaching experience as the midfield coach at Greater Western Sydney Giants and is now currently the Head of Development at Carlton FC. He began his football career at the YJFL playing for Balwyn as a junior.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT JEFF HOOPER President

undoubtedly one of the fathers of female junior football in metro Melbourne. This year was a year where pivoting in junior footy was taken from an administrative task to a community art form. Every single player, every parent, supporter, family member and especially club and league officials had to be flexible, open minded and above all positive in the way we conducted ourselves to get, keep and ultimately conclude a season that we stole from a pandemic that aggressively advanced on us through the winter months. Whilst we didn’t get enough footy, we got as much as we could played in the circumstances and for that I am grateful to the thousands of club volunteers and YJFL staff that gave of themselves for the benefit of our junior footy players. Smiles say it all and we kept it all about the kids! Thank you everyone. I would like the specifically acknowledge and thank Peter Nicholls for his 24 years of service to the YJFL in a range of roles culminating in his leadership as General Manager. Every development made by the YJFL in that time has had Peter’s hands on it. There are too many to mention but a specific highlight is that Peter is primarily responsible for the “hard yards” done to establish the female football development for Eastern Metropolitan Melbourne. Pete was instrumental having hosted and nurtured the first junior female clubs that became the foundation teams for the Eastern, Yarra Ranges, South Metro and of course Yarra Junior football leagues. He is

10

This is my last year as President with Ishbel Moodie poised to takeover after three years of induction and two as Vice President. I am the last of my Board generation and my retirement provides the YJFL with a new and relevant leadership driven forward pathway and a Board structure more representative of that future with at least four female members. With a small apology for reflection, the League has grown significantly since my time as a parent volunteer at Kew Rovers back in the noughties and even more-so as a player in the 1970’s at Bulleen Templestowe. In 2007, the YJFL had 19 member clubs, in 2021 we have 32. There were 302 teams, there are now 503. We had 7,324 players; we now have 10,891.

2021 ANNUAL REPORT

We had a smattering of females playing with the boys and only up to age 13, now we have a separate competition with 2,598 females. We have established development programs for beginners and elite players, welfare programmes for the League and clubs and corporate partner sponsorships. Our facilities are state of the art, relationships with our nine councils are the strongest they have ever been and support from AFL Victoria continuing to develop as the AFL itself goes through its business-pivoting restructures to respond to the financial and strategic pressures of COVID.

and look forward to admiring the work done in the future from the honoured life membership I will always cherish.

Financially, the League is independently strong with streamlined systems of registration, player

payments, in-game medic support and football and personal development tailored to an economical League subs per player method. Importantly, our umpire systems, development and numbers are the strongest they have ever been and relationship alliances with the VAFA and on to AFL provide a pathway for umpires in line with players. The future of the YJFL is exciting with a Board capable and excited to continue to ensure the League is one that puts players and clubs first and adds value to the community within which it lives. I thank you for the privilege of being the presidential custodian of this wonderful League

CEO’S REPORT TIM MURRAY Chief Executive Officer

It was a pleasure to see our boys and girls back playing again in 2021. COVID has of course dominated our professional as well as our personal lives, and we hope that the impact of COVID on our games and volunteers is much less in 2022 than either 2020 or 2021.

Financially, the League is stronger this year, with payments being made to Clubs at the end of this financial year to compensate for the loss of games (and accordingly the lower costs the League faced). Clubs have been asked to make the entry level competitions as affordable as possible; to this end the League will be offering a $50 discount for all U8/U9/U10 players in 2022, provision for which is included in our accounts. The League is extremely fortunate to have great umpires and great coaches, led by Umpires Manager David Hannan. It is testament to Dave and his coaching team this year who retained and recruited a great base of umpires. The 2021 umpire cohort were as keen and eager as I have seen and I hope that passion continues to 2022. Further congratulations go to Ben Thiele who officiated his 300th game at the latter end of the 2021 season. Ben has been with the YJFL for over 10 years, is an umpire coach at Lynden Park and is one of the most reliable umpires in the League. The goal for all our competitive age groups is to ensure each game has two field umpires, and this will be a focus of the YJFL in 2022. We look forward to welcoming those who are interested to come and give it a go.

At the start of this season, we knew how much our players were keen to return to play and were delighted in the number of team entries and players registering. Club volunteers and especially Club Presidents deserve a huge vote of thanks. I specifically want to thank all Presidents who are retiring: Mark Centofanti (Ivanhoe), Andrew Chambers (Glen Iris), Caz Lorenz (Kew Rovers), Andrew Norris (Whitehorse Colts), Nic Moore (Bulleen Templestowe), Ritchie Appleby (Park Orchards), Shaun La Motte (Canterbury) and Suki StyantBrowne (Preston). Presidents make a significant contribution at all our clubs. The League had another strong year of registrations, which were roughly at the level of the 2019 figures. Growth keeps continuing in the YJFL but there are some concerns as we move beyond COVID. The effects were seen in girls’ football especially, as well as our younger age groups (Under 8-12) which is in line with what all Leagues in Melbourne experienced.

12

GameFace, our Digital Media Partner started their work in 2021 live streaming many matches from our home at Bulleen Park and at nearly every club’s home ground. This proved very popular with our players and parents alike and

2021 ANNUAL REPORT

it was amazing to hear the positive comments about the coverage. GameFace is a crucial part of our plans to make our League and games as accessible as possible to our community. It also turns out streaming games was much loved during the periods where we couldn’t have spectators attend our games due to COVID.

The ‘Virtual’ YJFL Awards in mid-September was a success. The week-long event consisted of contenders lists, live winners announcements and all the digital content produced was well received from our clubs, players and families. It would have been easy to just mail awards, but we knew our players would love an experience like this – which was verified as they watched in great numbers. Not having a final series this season was a huge disappointment, for the boys and girls as well as for all Club and League office bearers. Although great to have most of our season completed, there is nothing like seeing the best teams take the field at finals time. We made the decision to still award premiership flags and League Best and Fairest medals to reward kids and coaches, which ultimately wasn’t a hard decision.

important part of our role. We thank the AFL for their investment in this new competition management platform. Injury reporting in the YJFL is enhanced by having a Colbrow medic at every game and this is an important part of our League now. We call the families of every injured player each week and provide a weekly report to each Club on any head injuries sustained over the weekend. This is to care for our players and ensure clubs can monitor adherence to the new AFL 12-day standout rule for any player diagnosed with concussion. The Under 18/Colts competition in 2021 was successful and retained 400+ youth boys playing footy. We are pleased that we were able to keep the cohorts together for another year after completely missing the 2020 season. I would like to thank Brad Scott and Sophie Williams at AFL Victoria for their support for continuing the U17.5 competition in 2022, including allowing existing players to play. Thanks to our nine Councils, who have again been extremely flexible as we tried to get as many games played and pushed our finals into September. We have planned to play our Grand Finals in 2022 in the first weekend in September and this can only happen because of the outstanding support of our Councils.

Welcome to Northcote JFC who played their first games in the YJFL. I attended a few times and really enjoyed watching the games on the dual ovals of McDonnell Park. I look forward to them growing and prospering within the YJFL. The League has made an investment in technology this year, with the use of new fixturing software and now the use of the new AFL system PlayHQ. These systems give us better fixtures, a fairer competition, and happier players. We are the only metropolitan League using PlayHQ in 2022. By using the newest systems we provide a better service to Club volunteers which is an

many hours engaging with the State Government about the future home of the YJFL due to the loss of our much-loved Oval 1 at Bulleen Park due to North East Link; at the time of writing an agreement has yet to be finalised. Finally, I need to especially thank Peter Nicholls and Jeff Hooper - both of whom will not be serving the League next year. Peter will be missed greatly. He has been a wise counsel over the last 2 years, and the League would not be what it is today without him. Thank you Pete, for your 24 years of service, and have a wonderful retirement.

Thanks to the League’s staff in what has been another trying year. We have been greatly heartened by the support to the staff from our great Clubs, as we try to accommodate team numbers, prepare a fixture, run meetings and training virtually for thousands of volunteers, and so forth. We all know what it has been like, but we wouldn’t be the League we are today without the fabulous staff we have - COVID has tested us like never before. Jess has never wavered in being there to support the staff and Clubs, Shaun has done an enormous job in fixturing games over and over again, Brad ran a development program this year against all odds and Aidan has established a very professional communications program at the YJFL. Many thanks are due to our Board members, who are crucial to the smooth running of the League. I especially thank Jeff Hooper for his wisdom and experience, as he leaves the League after a decade on our Board, and Justin Scotti (who is retiring) for his financial guidance. To Ishbel Moodie, Craig Lake, Paul Lane, Sue Ellen Mackintosh, Maree De Bondt and Andrew Davenport, I say many thanks for what has been a demanding two years, operationally and financially, for the YJFL. The Board have spent

Peter was instrumental in working with the fivetrail blazing YJFL clubs and five neighbouring clubs to promote, recruit and run the YJFL’s first ever Youth Girls football competition. In 2014 Peter was appointed as General Manager of the League and was awarded Life Membership of the Yarra Junior Football League in 2019. We would not be anything like the League we are today without Peter Nicholls. We will be forever grateful for his contribution: he can’t be replaced, and he will never be forgotten. Jeff Hooper has had an incredible impact on the League, and especially girls footy. In 2014 Jeff was nominated to the YJFL Board as the Board member for Female Football. He continued in this role until 2016, always passionate to ensure the YJFL were leaders in Female Football. In 2017 Jeff was elected by the YJFL Board as Vice President of the League. In 2018 Jeff was elected as President of the League – a role he is finishing at the 2021 AGM. Jeff’s foresight on all things girl’s football and junior football in general has been outstanding. This is reflected in the participation numbers and strong competitions at the YJFL with record numbers of teams, and female competitions in every age group, with approximately 25% of the player population now being female. I look forward to 2022 and the 16-round season. It has been many years since we held a 16-round season. This is one for the footy fanatics and will be a season like no other. See you around the grounds.

appetite from the children to again be actively involved in community football. Whilst we didn’t get to finish the season in the way in which we all would have liked, we did get 10 rounds of football this season which allowed 2,403 actual matches to take place. With no finals series able to be played, the top placed teams were declared premiers for the 2021 season. This decision resulted in 27 of the 32 clubs winning at least 1 flag.

Thank You

After a challenging 2020 season, it was fantastic to have football played again in 2021. Despite the uncertainty of how we as a League would bounce back, it was extremely pleasing to see a total of 503 teams participate in the season across 66 competitions. This was a drop of five teams from our 2019 numbers and, given the circumstances, can only be viewed as a resounding success. Full credit for this success sits fairly and squarely upon the Leadership of the clubs who played an enormous role in re-engaging with their communities and the YJFL cannot thank them enough. 2021 did see a drop in team numbers in our non-competitive age groups, Under 8s, 9s and 10s (Mixed and Girls). 141 teams participated, which is a drop of 25 teams (15%) from our 2019 numbers. This drop off was not unique to the YJFL and, as such, the AFL, through FDMs Matt Young and Eliza Straford, and the YJFL, through Brad Jamison and Jessica O’Connor, will have a particular focus on assisting clubs improve their Auskick numbers (where required) and transition from Auskick into club football. Our 2021 player numbers were stronger than anticipated with 10,891 registrations consisting of 8,293 male players and 2,598 female players. These numbers basically aligned with our 2019 numbers which proved that there was a real

Club volunteers – it is impossible to run a competition of our size without the considerable contribution from club volunteers. Whether they be a team manager, a goal umpire, a timekeeper or any other role, big or small, all of these people make up the totality of a successful football league and we thank you all for your contribution. Club Committees – If the past 18 months has taught us anything, it is how fortunate we are to have high quality people performing committee level roles within our clubs. Despite the many barriers placed before them, Club Committees remained focussed upon the end game of getting kids playing football again, which they did to great success. YJFL Umpiring Group – a big thank you to David Hannan and his umpiring group for their hard work, organisation and, in particular, flexibility in ensuring that we maximised umpire numbers across the League each week. In excess of 80% of all matches across the League had more than 1 umpire and this can’t be done without an enormous amount of work. YJFL Staff – a big thank you also goes to Brad Jamison, Aidan Paus and, especially, Jessica O’Connor for all the work and support that they offered me across the whole of the 2021 season. Finally, I would like to thank Peter Nicholls for the friendship, support, advice and guidance that he has provide across the 20 years or so that I have known him. We all know that Peter has made an enormous contribution to the YJFL but he has also been a fantastic support and mentor to so many people across the League and his retirement will leave a huge pair of shoes to fill.

TALENT & DEVELOPMENT

I’d like to thank Coaches Tom Hunter, Michael Talbot, Vince Dattoli, Brett Chandler and Adrian Talarico for leading our Academy groups, as well as the many passionate and dedicated Assistant Coaches who made the program a success.

Brad Jamison Football Operations Manager

This year once again provided many challenges, but we were fortunate to be able to complete our Yarra Magpies Academy Under 13, 14 and 15 programs. Almost 400 players were given the opportunity to be involved in the Academy this year and we hope they enjoyed the experience. One of the highlights was the ‘draft combine’ testing conducted in the April school holidays for our Under 14 and 15 groups. This gave the boys and girls an opportunity to become familiar with fitness testing activities such as the 20m sprint, agility test, and vertical jump, helping to preparing them as they move into NAB League and hopefully higher levels of football in the future. While it was disappointing not to take part in the Metro Development Series, we were pleased to finish the Under 14 and 15 programs with a round of matches against the Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League (MPJFL) across two days in the July school holidays. We share a similar vision to the MPJFL with representative footy and look forward to an ongoing partnership. The live streaming of these matches by GameFace, and the additional media content produced internally throughout the duration of the Yarra Magpies Academy was also extremely successful and provided high level of traffic to our website and social media platforms.

18

We had to navigate one short lockdown and their flexibility to adapt was greatly appreciated. While the traditional Shepparton Under 16 matches were cancelled, we were also able to run a three week program for this age group led by Dale Mayne (boys) and Penny Cula-Reid (girls) with both squads also playing the MPJFL. With the extended lockdown in the second half of the year, the Under 12 futures program didn’t take place in August/September, but we will look to bring this back at the end of 2022. We look forward to planning for next year and giving another group of Yarra Junior Football League players the opportunity to participate in our talent programs.

PETER JOHNSTON MEDAL

This year, one player from each of the U14 and U15 boys and girls programs were awarded the Peter Johnston medal at the end of the Yarra Magpies Academy. Peter was a long time board member, and a great supporter of Representative Football. Coaches were asked to select a player who made an outstanding contribution to the Academy this year. This may have been in the form of demonstrating a high level of sportsmanship, actively and consistently working to develop their skills, being an active participant at training, or taking direction from coaches to better both their football and their teammates football.

CONDUCT PAUL LANE Conduct Director

In my first report as Conduct Director, I wish to thank Brad Jamison, Tim Murray, the YJFL staff and the Tribunal Members in managing an exceptionally disappointing season from a Conduct viewpoint. A special thanks goes to the retiring Peter Nicholls who provided Brad and myself with 25 years of knowledge in 6 months and we experienced virtually every conduct issue known to the YJFL. We were not the only Sporting Code to experience unusual conduct in the year following a COVID lost season, however too often the behavior of officials, players and spectators towards our umpires was unacceptable and our Tribunals showed zero tolerance for this behaviour. The YJFL and Clubs will work even harder in 2022 to ensure that our game is safe for all players and Umpires and I do thank the Club Presidents for rallying during the season in our Conduct Forum to assist the YJFL in controlling this unusual behavior. Whilst 2021 was disappointing from a Conduct viewpoint we will improve in 2022 with the help and support of all persons associated with the YJFL.

MARKETING Aidan Paus Marketing Coordinator

The YJFL keeps growing strength to strength within its Marketing activities and in 2021 it was no different. A strong focus and improvement on communication was the goal in 2021 and achieved by using the League’s already established social media platforms while introducing a new electronic mailing system and fully utilising GameFace as our Digital Media Partner. It was great to have a near full season where the full efforts of the Marketing realm within the YJFL could be explored and produced.

the majority having live scores and commentary. Also covered were all Representative games from Bulleen Park and Rowley Reserve in Rye for the away games. The opportunity to provide another way to watch especially through the times where spectators were limited at our games was a huge benefit of this partnership. We thank GameFace for their efforts and look forward to a bigger year in 2022.

YJFL Awards

The inability to hold a face-to-face presentation night this year allowed for an entire digital event. This meant devising a strategy that would accommodate the announcement of 49 divisions and over 500 names. The week long newly named ‘YJFL Awards’ was held in midSeptember with a different approach to publish the Contenders list three days prior to the final awards being announced. This whole campaign garnered a large reach within our community and was a moment our players and families could reflect to the football season during Melbourne’s lockdown.

Two major digital campaigns this year included Representative Football between April and July and the YJFL Awards in September. These two major events in the YJFL calendar gathered unprecedented online traction, nothing like what has been seen in the League prior.

GameFace

2021 was the first year that the YJFL’s Digital Media Partnership with GameFace could be used to its full potential. GameFace provide the YJFL a way to use their expertise and services to produce high quality game footage, graphics, and digital support for many of our major events. Their live-streaming service was provided on behalf of the League to 15 clubs from their home grounds with 52 games being live streamed and

20

Representative Football

The elevation of coverage throughout the representative program added an extra element to add to the experience for all the boys and girls involved. Player profile shots were taken for all players, select player interviews during the combine and game day were held and much more digital content which raised the profile of the program.

UMPIRES David Hannan Umpires Manager

After a disappointing 2020 season we had high hopes for an entire 2021 season. It all started well with many new umpires joining the team which offset to some degree the significant loss of experienced umpires who had moved on for a variety of reasons. Pre-season was well attended with our main aim of trying to get some of the new umpires up to speed quickly by providing at training coaching and then practice matches. This proved very successful with many taking to round 1 without an on-field mentor. We felt that this was in many cases due to the fact a majority of the new umpires were still playing or had played in our League.

Koonung Reserve and Thursday nights to Lynden Park was a success and we thank particularly Camberwell Sharks for allocating time on Thursday nights for the group to train. We’d also like to thanks Park Orchards and St Marys for allowing us to run training at their satellite venue grounds. Whilst we were sad that the season did end without the finals being played we thought that overall the umpires performed really well during the season and whilst we were not able to celebrate grand final day we did have an on-line presentation night which was a huge success.

With more games to umpire we knew there would be challenges however we were really proud of the way the new umpires and in fact all umpires performed with many going into much higher grades than when they had last umpired back in 2019. The coaching staff of the umpires worked hard at training and on game day to provide advice and support to as many umpires each week as possible. A big thank you to all of the coaches and mentors who participated and gave support to others. The move of training on Wednesday nights to

Girl’s football became a particular passion of Peter’s, and its growth and success can be largely attributed to Peter’s drive, support, and advocacy throughout the League. In 2014 Peter was appointed as General Manager of the League, a position that he held up until his retirement at the end of the 2021 season. Peter was awarded Life Membership of the Yarra Junior Football League in 2019. YJFL CEO Tim Murray at the presentation of Peter’s Life Membership stated, how grateful he was for the wisdom and experience he has bought to the League. ‘We would not be anything like the

The YJFL has 11,000 children playing and over 500 teams, making it the largest junior football League in Australia. Peter has worked at the YJFL for the whole of the YJFL’s existence (24 years since 1997), and the YJFL through Peter was important in the development of girl’s football in Victoria. It is hard to imagine someone having had a more significant contribution to junior football than Peter Nicholls. In 2011 Peter was appointed to the full-time role of Joint League Manager and the timing of the appointment could not be any better as the League took its first steps into the Female Football space. Peter’s football journey began as a 13-year-old in 1967 when he strapped on the boots for his first official game with Burwood Uniting Football Club. Peter’s coach that day was none other than Jim Honey, a man well known for his contribution to community football, and whose deeds and actions set a great example to a young boy with a keenness to just be involved.

16 seasons, 250 games and 4 Premierships later, Peter may have hung up his playing boots, but it was certainly not the end of his involvement in community football. Finishing as a Life Member of the club, Peter got a taste for the administrative side of the game having spent 5 years as the Assistant Secretary at the club.

2021 ANNUAL REPORT

As a young father, Peter took some time out to focus on his children Adam and Emma but in 1991, when Adam started to play football with the Hawthorn Citizens Junior Football Club, Peter was quick to pick up where he left off. He soon became Club Secretary, a position he held until 1996 when he transitioned to the Administration Manager of the Hawthorn District Junior Football League. With a large contingent of boys committing themselves to school football, Adam was suddenly left without a team so moved on to play his football with De La Salle. And despite his existing workload, who do you think stuck his hand up to be team runner for the next 3 years – Peter of course. During the 1996 season, the Hawthorn District Junior Football League entered talks with the Doncaster and District Junior Football League which resulted in the merged entity that we now know as the Yarra Junior Football League.

For the first 14 seasons of this new League, Peter performed the part-time role of Assistant Administration Manager, an all-encompassing position that saw Peter perform various duties ranging from being Tribunal Secretary to acting as Tour Manager for Representative Team trips to Queensland and even Nauru. And if you were ever at Bulleen Park on a Sunday during those first 14 seasons, you would no doubt have seen Peter charging around the field with the original line marker, ensuring that players and umpires got to play on the ground in its best condition.

Long-time friend and colleague Shaun Dowling, YJFL Senior Football Operations Manager will always appreciate the life lessons he has learned during their time working and volunteering across community sport together. ‘Peter has had a massive impact on community sport for a long time and just as big of an impact upon those lucky to work with him in both a voluntary and professional capacity. He always led by actions rather than words and if there was ever anything that needed to be done Peter was there doing it’.

AFL VICTORIA Matt Young Football Development Manager Eliza Straford Participation Coordinator

The YJFL affiliated Football Development was some changed early in 2021 where a structure saw Eliza Straford commence a role to co-manage the region with existing member – Matt Young.

The ‘Footy 4 Fun’ program also took place in the pre-season where Auskick Centres link-up with their affiliated Junior Club to wear their team colours for the first time and play round-robin matches against other Auskick Centres. Footy 4 Fun will return in late 2021 and again in 2022 as we continue to ensure our Auskick participants are better connected than ever to local clubs and they get a taste of the thrill of match-play before exiting Auskick and joining a local YJFL Club. We encourage all relevant club contacts to discuss with Matt or Eliza joining the Footy 4 Fun program to strengthen your clubs Under 8’s pathway.

staff new new staff

Throughout term one and two the AFL Schools Program promoted football in schools reaching over 7,000 students from 28 schools, these programs served to build awareness and connection to Football Clubs and Auskick Centres for students.

Although a lot of activities were unable to go ahead, the team utilised online platforms to host webinars, connecting in with various coaches. A Coach Development webinar with Luke Power and Jason Davenport was a highlight during the year, and Eliza also made an immediate impact by launching the Female Player to Coach Program. The Player to Coach program aims to provide opportunities for women to easily transition from a playing capacity into a coach and the program will continue into 2022 where we hope to continue to drive the presence of females in the coaching community.

ACKNOWLEDGING JEFF HOOPER Jeff Hooper is stepping away from the role of the Yarra Junior Football League President, following 16 years of voluntary service and commitment to the YJFL community at club and League level, particularly in Female Football. Jeff’s introduction to the YJFL was in 2005, when his son commenced playing in the U9’s with Kew Rovers JFC. Jeff supported his son and the club on training nights and game days. In 2008 Jeff was elected as President of Kew Rovers JFC and continued in the role throughout 2009 and 2010. In 2010 as well as having the title of President he was head coach of the Kew Rovers U14 side.

2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons. Jeff proudly advises all that 16 of the girls he coached in the YJFL rep sides were drafted to AFLW sides. Whilst in the role of Head Coach of the Girls Rep teams Jeff always encouraged girls he had coached to return as his assistant coaches’ many of the girls took up this opportunity. Jeff’s teams won the Metro Junior Championships in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. During the years he voluntary coached the YJFL Girls Rep sides, Jeff successfully ran his own business and even recommenced playing football in his own right. In 2014 Jeff was nominated to the YJFL Board as the Board member for Female Football. He continued in this role until 2016, always passionate to ensure the YJFL were leaders in Female Football.

In 2011 after stepping aside as President, Jeff and the newly appointed Kew Rovers President, Paul Lane introduced a Youth Girls team to Kew Rovers. Jeff was the Inaugural coach of this side and under Jeff’s guidance the Kew Rovers YG won the Premiership in their first season (2011). In 2012 Jeff coached Kew Giants Colts Div. 4 side to a premiership. Jeff is someone who doesn’t shy away from a challenge, he also volunteered in 2012 to take on the YJFL Role of Metro Junior Champions Head Coach- U15 Girls. Jeff enthusiastically continued in the role of Head Coach of the YJFL U15 girls Rep sides in the

2021 ANNUAL REPORT

In 2017 Jeff was elected by the YJFL Board as Vice President of the League. In 2018 Jeff was elected as President of the League- a role he is still undertaking in 2021. Jeff’s foresight on all things girl’s football and junior football in general has been outstanding. This is reflected in the participation numbers and strong competitions at the YJFL with record numbers of teams, and female competitions in every age group, with 25% of the player population now being female. Jeff will be sorely missed around the YJFL, his expertise and knowledge of the inner workings of the AFL, community football in particular junior football was unparalleled. We wish him all the best in the next part of his life and eternally thank him for the huge impact he has had within the YJFL and Victorian football.

Significant Changes

Dated this day of 16th November, 2021.

No significant change in the nature of these activities occurred during the year, however the League was once again impacted by COVID-19 and had to cancel 4 rounds of football, with no finals being played. There remains a material risk that the 2022 season will also be impacted by COVID-19. The League has taken the decision to return a significant portion of its registration fees, however in light of the uncertainty surrounding season 2022, has ensured it has maintained sufficient cash reserves to continue to operate the league should season 2022 be disrupted.
