February 2018
Yarnscombe Newsletter by the Community for the Community Note from the Editors First things, first …… HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all. We hope that you had a restful and enjoyable Christmas. So, the New Year has arrived and what will it have in store for us all? We would love to hear your stories as the year goes on. One thing we do know is that 2018 will definitely be a year of change for a few people in the village with some houses up for sale. When the time comes for you to move on, we hope you will take away happy memories of living here in Yarnscombe. Good luck to you all.
The year started with Eleanor – the storm!! Wowsers. Winds of over 80mph were recorded in Barnstaple. Hopefully no-one suffered too much damage. Speaking about damage, and bearing in mind it is local, have you seen what has happened at Braunton Marshes? ☹. One of the banks has been breached and the wildlife (flora and fauna) that call the marshes their home has been flooded, catastrophically. There is a group on Facebook @friendsofbrauntonmarsh who are looking for support. The group is run by a number of people (1 of whom I know – and is our quiz team ringer!!) who are passionate about saving the area and concerned about the environmental affect it will have on the immediate area and North Devon as a whole.

The storms and very inclement weather we have been experiencing since the New Year has meant debris and mud on the roads in and out of the village, and when the temperature reaches 0°C … the roads become treacherous. Please take care when driving or riding!! What an amazing community spirit we have here in the village. This has particularly been shown over the last couple of months – firstly with the Carol Service before Christmas, and then the Panto. Both these events were amazingly well supported by villagers and those who have visited Yarnscombe from outside the parish boundaries. This is what living in a village is all about. You’ll find write ups of these (and other) events throughout The Eagle. Don’t forget if you want anything published in the newsletter let us know on yarnscombe.eagle@gmail.com . If you have any other ideas for events for the village and the social club, please get in touch with the VH & SC club committee (contact details are on page 2). Of course, the February issue is subscription time and you’ll have seen the little brown envelope attached. We’re constantly looking at the costs of producing The Eagle and without your contributions we couldn’t continue printing our monthly newsletter.
Pat and Sharron Deadline for articles To avoid disappointment, please don’t forget the deadline for submission of any articles for The Eagle is the 20th of each month. Any articles submitted after this date can’t be included as The Eagle is now sent to printers.
