The deadline for this month’s Eagle came just after the village fete.

For those of you who were able to come along, we think you can join us in saying that it was another fantastic village community event – enjoyed by everyone who came along and the weather was kind, albeit overcast.

An event like this takes a lot of work “behind the scenes” by a dedicated team of volunteers from the Village Hall & Social Club Committee and other residents from the village. To name them all individually would run the risk of missing someone out of the list, but you know who you are – running the stalls, making the signs, organising people to attend, driving vehicles, putting up (and taking down) the marquee, electrics, drinks and cakes……… the list is long and varied.

CIDER WALK

7th September The annual Cider Walk around the Parish starting and finishing at the Village Hall.

It’s a great annual community event – the walk is around 4 miles taking in the amazing views (and cider) around the parish especially when the weather is favourable.

For those of you who are new to the Parish – we take in four different stops (Three Gates Cross, Easton Moor Cross and Ward Lane) sampling different ciders. The last stop is at the Social Club.

We now know that we will be able to enjoy the colourful gardens and flower pots on our way around the parish while enjoying the various ciders along the route.

The start time is to be confirmed nearer the time (but in the past it’s been around 4:00pm) There will be a charge for the walk together with a separate cost for a pasty when we get back to the Social Club.

Everyone of all ages are welcome as well as our four-legged friends.đ&#x;˜Š

ISSUE 7 We intend to enlarge some of these drawings and display them on an easel in the church soon, where everyone can look at them.

YARNSCOMBE CHURCH RESCUE GROUP NEWS Exciting times as the suggestions gathered from the public meeting almost a year ago, begin to take shape on the architect’s drawing board!

Finally, we will be seeking ideas for the design of a glass door to be fitted to the outer entrance of the church porch, thus creating a “draught lock”, so that all the warmth isn’t lost every time the main inner door is opened.

The first choice to be made is whether to go for a combined kitchen/WC set up at one side of the back of the church, or a separate setup with the kitchen on one side and the WC on the other, as shown in the drawings below.

Ticket sales for the “100 Club” are going very well.

The first draw will be at the Harvest Festival Supper in the Village Hall on 8 October.

Another choice to be made is for the design of the glass screen that will fill in the draughty gap between the nave and the tower. This, and the photo-voltaic panels concealed within the roof gulley, should go a long way to reducing the heating bills and curing the freezing winter temperatures experienced.

Any individual interested in joining the council-please submit a written letter advising us of your interest. If no further requests are received, then the applicant can attend the next meeting and be co-opted.

NOTES FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL Summer is definitely here and in Yarnscombe we are lucky enough to have miles of footpaths and open green spaces at our disposal. It is therefore very disheartening to hear that last month some equipment in the play park was vandalised and on a couple of occasions the play hut in the playing field suffered damage.

Councillors were able to repair the damage to the hut, as we, the council, has budgeted for maintaining assets and grants are available from Devon County Council for the council, as well as for Village Hall Committee.

We all know, accidents do happen and if any equipment in the play park or playing field becomes damaged, please contact the relevant committee members or councillors.

Wanton damage is a very different matter and will not be taken lightly. At the very least, it could mean, that the council would need to increase the precept which would be reflected in council tax bills.

Regarding the playing field it’s also worth noting, that vehicular access is only allowed by prior approval of the parish council. The post and lock that prevent vehicles from entering the field is at present damaged and has been removed and it will be replaced as soon as possible. Any organisation/ individual that requires vehicular access in future should therefore always contact a councillor or clerk to obtain key and gain access.

ISSUE 7 It is also a numbers game – the more reports of potholes in Yarnscombe received at County Hall the more likely that a road in the parish could get, for example, resurfaced.

ANDREW SAYWELL – DEVON COUNTY COUNCILLOR It is a real privilege to represent Yarnscombe on Devon County Council and I would like to thank all residents for their support during the last two years. My ward or ‘division’ of Torrington Rural covers 18 Parishes, starting at Yarnscombe in the north all the way down to Winkleigh in the south and then back over to Buckland, Filleigh, Langtree and Frithelstock in the West.

I do drive the roads in and around the Parish regularly and I know that there are some in need of more attention than others! At the time of writing Herds Lane should get repaired imminently by the Public Rights of Way Team. I also know that the condition of Oaken Hill heading towards the B3227 is far from ideal! I have asked that Oaken Hill is put on the list of ‘Pothole Action Fund’ sites for rural road repairs and while funding is tight, and I cannot make any guarantees for immediate action, it is on my agenda and I am hopeful that we can get some proper repairs done soon.

While it is a big area, I have not forgotten the needs of Yarnscombe and I’ve always striven to represent my Parishes as fairly as possible. In the last two years I have attended many Parish Council meetings at Yarnscombe and I regularly report back to the Council on the work I or DCC are doing in the area.

Devon County Council is responsible for strategic local government services such as Adults and Children’s Social Services. However, by far the most frequent service I get contacted about is Highways and of course the dreaded issue of potholes! Yarnscombe is no exception to this.

The quickest and easiest way to get any pothole or other Highway issue fixed is to report the problem directly to Devon County Council. This is now easier than ever to do online – if you type the link www.devon.cc/report-it into your web browser it will take you automatically to the reporting website where you can report everything from potholes, broken signs, streetlighting and overgrown vegetation.

Two local charities are to benefit from charity bingo nights at the VILLAGE HALL during August with eyes down from 7:30pm.

NATURE NOTES I saw a rather faded Painted Lady butterfly, recently; the only one for this year. It took me back to the year 2009 when, as I recorded in my diary, there was an invasion of the species, all over the country. It was part of a mass migration of millions of these butterflies from Spain and North Africa. There are years when we see many of them and other years, hardly any, depending on the weather further south and the strength and direction of the winds. From mid-July onwards, we should see more butterflies, newly emerged from their chrysalides. This will coincide with the flowering of butterfly-attractive plants like thistles, knapweed and Buddleia, plus a host of garden flowers. It should also be borne in mind that the caterpillars of the more colourful butterflies, such as Red Admiral, Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell and Comma, all like to feed on nettles, so it is a good idea to retain a clump of these in a corner of your garden.

I have noticed two stoats disappearing into the hedgerows, recently. This must be a good year for them because it has been so dry for the past few months. Heavy rain tends to wash them out of the holes in which they make their nests. They are found all over the British Isles, from seashore to mountain tops, preying mainly on rodents but also killing birds (including hens!) and creatures much larger than themselves, such as rabbits.

Stoats should not be mistaken for weasels which are much smaller, only 20-25cm as opposed to 35-40cm. They are attractive animals, with chestnut coats and clearly defined white underparts, and a black tip to their tails. In Scotland, the stoat often loses it chestnut fur and becomes white in the winter, when it is known as ermine. It does this to camouflage it against snow, however, it still retains the black tip to its

tail. The robes of the peers of our realm are edged or faced with ermine, a practice which has been in existence since the 12th century. Today, ermine is seldom used and most new peers use artificial fur. In northern England, some stoats turn white in winter, but there may be occasions when there is no snow, so they become very conspicuous! Apparently, it is a result of their genes, poor things.

LETTER FROM THE VICAR

SERVICES IN YARNSCOMBE AUGUST 2019

CHURCH THOUGHTS… When we were up at Lynton a couple of weeks ago, we passed a church with a box outside. No, not a begging bowl, well not for money anyway.

We found a couple of other boxes around the village and each was asking the passer-by to ‘try prayer’. We were being asked to write our prayer request on a piece of paper and put it in the box for the need to be prayed about in a confidential way in church. No names needed; God knows already! He does like his children to ask for help, though. Just as we like our children to ask for help and things from us.

Don’t get me wrong, prayer is not magic, but neither is it just for ‘professional’ Christians. The laws of nature and physics are not routinely broken, but God can and does intervene and our prayers definitely do make a difference.

How can I make such claims? By voluntarily living 33 years as a human being Jesus knows what it’s like for people. God is not distant or unreachable and Jesus himself brings our prayers to our Heavenly Father. As many have found for themselves, Jesus is alive, he hears our prayers and he cares. We need no gobetween, but those who go to church are always honoured to share the burden of prayer with others, just like the folk in Lynton. So I would encourage you to try prayer, again. Leave a message in church if you wish, ask someone else to pray, or speak to God yourself. He is always available.

Dial 999 if you suspect someone is having a cardiac arrest.

The Ambulance service have details of our defibrillator, the location and the code to open the cabinet and should tell you when you ring them (the defibrillator is in the entrance to the Victory Hall).

The defibrillator has to be kept in a temperature-controlled cabinet to prevent deterioration. If you need to access the defibrillator the code to the cabinet is

This will unlock the cabinet.

The defibrillator is automated and can be used by anyone and is self-explanatory once you open the lid to the defibrillator and turn it on - please listen carefully and follow the voice instructions. (Do not use in wet conditions)

As this is the case these timetables are provisional and may change, but we will advertise well in advance if they do.
