Note from the Editor Wow what a summer we had this year. When the last newsletter went to print it was at the very start of the heatwave, and the start of the hottest summer since 1976 in England. How did all your faithful hounds cope? I suspect we all became very ingenious at keeping them cool and happy, from cooling coats and mats, to freezing bottles of water and putting them in the dogs bed.

I’m very lucky, our two don’t seem to mind the heat too much, but our old greyhound Blue used to really struggle, even from an early age. This summer even Jack took to the water on one of the hottest days, we took them to the beach in the evening to have a paddle and cool down.

Now our thoughts are turning to the winter months ahead, but I’m sure there will be lots of “crunchy leaf” walks over the next few weeks during Autumn. Does anyone else have dogs who love to have a walk buffet?

Jack has taught Bella the joys of picking and eating blackberries, and I’ve lost count of the number of acorns I’ve had to take out of their mouths in the past few weeks.

Co-ordinator’s bit Sitting freezing in front of the computer watching the rain pour down I realise autumn has well and truly arrived and debate whether to put the heating on for the dogs! What a wonderful summer we had and elsewhere in the Newsletter there some photos of our hounds enjoying the sunshine.

Summer, as usual, has been a very busy one for me. Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers we have attended events almost every weekend from May until September.

Our primary aim going ’On Tour’ is to promote greyhounds as pets but it’s an added bonus when we raise some money. Thanks to the hard work of Simon and Antonia, Chris and Debbie Bush and family we raised almost £2,000 this year and also found some new greyhound ‘slaves’.

We continue to collect at The Stadium and managed to cover all race nights during the summer we will now only collect on Saturday nights as the evenings draw in. We are very grateful to all our collectors and their hounds for so willingly offering to cover all the nights. The money collected greatly boosts our funds.

The June Dog Show was very successful with fine weather for a change. Craig Samuels, one of our trainers, was the judge. The dogs all looked magnificent for the event and it was lovely to see so many of our rehomed dogs.

The weather for the August Open Day was very hot and attendance was down but many off our owners supported us leaving their hounds at home in the cool.

Our next Open Day is on October 14th from 11-2 with our Auction at 12 midday. If you have any greyhound related items suitable to auction we would be very pleased to receive them. We do have a good number of Lots already including David French greyhound prints.

There are still a number of greyhound Walks to join this year. 28th October along Winterton Beach, November, 18th Blickling Hall and December 8th (a Saturday) at Saxlingham Nethergate. Don’t forget to put the date for our Christmas Fayre in your diary Saturday, November 24th at Taverham Village Hall, Sandy lane.

Hetty’s Helpers Apparently I have recently been a naughty girl, although I cannot understand why. We were staying at our (mine and Romeo’s) new static caravan for a few days, it is by the beach and the walks and sniffs are great. However I was feeling a little unwell and decided I had to go, so I woke up grumpy old David who muttered something like “What at 3am!!” He put my slip lead on and out we went in the dark. Well a slip lead means just that so I slipped it and ran off to have a wee. Grumpy old David panicked and tried to follow me in his pyjamas and bare feet (not a pretty site) but he couldn’t see me in the dark and couldn’t shout for fear of waking everyone up. I was fine and sauntered back to him at my leisure. It seems that I am what they call “In The Dog House” but that is OK because it is my house anyway.

I see that we have quite a few new people using easyfundraising.com when buying things online. We have now raised well over £400. Brilliant and it doesn’t cost a penny to register and use.

It is now just over a year since we started the kennel sponsor scheme so I have been sending out reminders recently. People are continuing to support us in this way which is really good.You can find all details of this at the kennels or by emailing me on jones432@btinternet.com I have been to the kennels much more lately now that David and I are feeling better and it is always good to see how happy my friends are.

They still need their own families and sofas though, so please keep spreading the word and telling as many people as possible about us and the lovely doggies. I, of course, have my own family and sofa and have become quite adept at subtlety stretching and pushing unwanted people off, including grumpy old David. Greyhound walking Do you have an odd hour in the morning or afternoon you could spare to walk a greyhound or two round our field? We normally walk at about 10am in the morning and about 1.15pm in the afternoon. We are very short of walkers on Wednesdays, Thursdays and weekends and every afternoon. If you come you will be assured of a warm welcome and a cup of tea or coffee afterwards sometimes a piece of cake too! Just turn up and Molly will show you the ropes.

Each time the newsletter is published we post around 700 copies out. As you can imagine this means our postage charges are very high. We have a growing number of people who opt to receive the newsletter by email, and remove themselves from the postage list. Hounds on Holiday In the last newsletter you asked for photos of greyhounds on their holidays, I have attached two of our gang enjoying the stunning beauty of the Western highlands .

Coleen and I actually got married on Skye many years ago with just our first two rescue greyhounds in attendance.

So here’s Shadow ( black, Aka Danny / Artist Talent from Yarmouth Homefinders with his girl Magic, black & white, aka Lass / Strangford Lass from West Yorkshire RGT). The blue loch photo is taken by Loch Torridon on the West Highland Coast and the view across the sea with Magic enjoying the view is taken on the beautiful Isle of Skye . Who says the weather in Scotland is always wet and windy? We had 14 days with this gorgeous weather every day, wonderful and the hounds loved every moment .

Hope you like the photos especially our special boy Shadow, he’s a star! Please let everyone there knows he’s very very well and very very happy.

A stunning boy, Arty loves a countryside walk or a game of ball but most of all he enjoys a good snooze in the sunshine.

Handsome Taggy is loyal and affectionate to those he knows, he enjoys a peaceful walk in the countryside and walks well on the lead too.

Arty recently spent time in a home, he was brilliant and proved to be housetrained and able to be left for short periods. Arty will be an intelligent, rewarding and loyal friend given time and patience to continue his socialising with other animals.

Taggy will celebrate his fifth birthday in October, he has a happy, playful character and really loves a game of ball. Now ready to experience home comforts for the first time, Taggy can’t wait to relax in a quiet, calm home

Miley (Wrecking Ball) Many of you have asked about Miley. She was a beautiful (just 2) little girl. Sadly she developed auto immune polyarthritis in her trainer’s kennel which meant she would need constant care and medication. She was not suitable to home or have at the kennels and I decided to look after her myself. Sadly she was only with me for 3 weeks and in that time she had had 2 relapses and been hospitalized twice. It was a heart-breaking decision that I had to make as she relapsed again to send her over the rainbow bridge. RIP sweet girl run free without pain.

Mabel settles in Mabel here! I thought I’d tell you about my first week in my new home with Lad. I’m having a lovely time making new friends of the two and four legged variety. Lad is sharing all his beds and quilts and sofa with me and showing me where all the best sniffs are on our walks. He’s introduced me to all the local felines, which I ignore like Lad does, well until they move that is! Because I need building up a bit, I get lots of freshly cooked meat, which is very nice of my new mum cos Lad says she’s what they call a vegetarian. Don’t tell anyone but I think Lad is showing a bit of middle aged spread with all these extra treats!

Here is a photo of me and Lad when I arrived and me on my 9th birthday - as you can see partying was all a bit too much for Lad!
