BENEDETTA TAGLIABUE

ENRIC MIRALLES

An Italian architect living and working in Barcelona.

Currently acts as director of the firm Miralles Tagliabue EMBT. Her poetic architecture, always attentive to context, has won international awards in the field of public space and design.

A Spanish architect that lived and worked in Barcelona. He was Tagliabue’s husband and practicing partner at EMBT Architects. His largest project, the new Scottish Parliament Building, was unfunished at the time of his death in 2000; Tagliabue completed over ten of his works after.

He prioritized and encouraged experimental architecture; so much so that Tagliabue started a foundation under his name to promote this cause in his spirit.

She has been a visiting professor at Harvard University, Columbia University and Barcelona ETSABM, lecturing regularly at forums and universities, and is part of jurors around the world.

Her work received the RIBA Stirling prize in 2005, the National Spanish prize in 2006, the Catalan National prize in 2002, City of Barcelona prize in 2005 and 2009, FAD prizes in 2000, 2003, and 2007.

M I R AL L E S TAGL I A BUE E MBT An international architectural firm, founded in 1994 in collaboration with Miralles and Tagliabue.

Miralles and Tagliabue started projects like the New Scottish Parliament Building in Edinburgh, the Utrecht City Hall in Netherlands, the Headquarters of Gas Natural Fenosa and so on.

Although the office has expanded to Shanghai and Paris, with multiple projects around Europe, China, etc. in fields ranging from educational to restoration architecture; they have kept their fundamental core: an open approach, full of exploration and experiments with a high level of conceptualism.

EMBT won the bid in 1998. Their proposal’s organic capacity combined existing elements with new technologies through the contemp. and unique language of the Barcelona studio.

A competition was held to rebuild the market located in the old quarter of Barcelona since 1997. EMBT’s proposal created a commercial market complemented by a residential zone and spaces integrating all of the neighborhood.

The pavilion aimed to reflect upon the Spanish climate, and recover the craft of wickerwork to reinvent it as a new construction technique.

Winning the bid in 2011, the new campus finished construction in 2021. Fudan University is a part of a network of institutions. Although their buildings are located in Shanghai thhey are far; hence they must display a distinguishable character and a connection amongst them to convey the identity of the university.

FUDA N U N I VE RSI T Y Fuden University is the first university established independently by the Chinese people. In 2000, it merged with Shanghai Medical University; and is now an important acaademic center for Chinese humanities, natural sciences, and medical studies.

EMBT was awarded the first prize in the International Competition to design a new campus for the university’s School of Management in Shanghai.

SCHOOL OF MA NAG E M E N T CA MPUS Although the construction began in 2011, the new campus was completed in 2021.

The architects strongly believed that their proposal will create a new green core of public life in the community of students under its new roof structure within the block; something the campus previously lacked. They designed the new buildings to become a network of connections between its surroundings, while defining the density and heights. The volumes are also adjustable to different functions.

All public activities like the library + museum, food court and shops are placed on the ground, first and underground levels: all connected with the campus garden. Furthermore, all public gathering spaces of the new building are covered by a roof-landscape.

RESEARCH | Fudan University

The term ‘Fudan’ means ‘Heavenly light shines after day’, which can be experienced by the students while they study and gather at the university due to the new structure that filters and modulates the light.

Key attention is given to the public gathering space of the building. Timber and other materials are used to give a comfortable and welcoming feeling. The two main external landscapes are treated differently; the central Boulevard is more urban and has big trees and water features. The internal zone includes vegetation inbetween the building and mixes with the interior.

The business school is expected to engage around 8,000 people within the building during peak hours - hence, there is a necessity for an easy + clean organization of the program. section
