CONTEXT PLAN

Sitiuated in the heart of east Ottawa, Merging Urbanities aims to strengthen the connection of public spaces, like Montreal Rd. and the semi-public spaces in the community through a series of three merging plazas of different sizes. How the massing of individual buildings on Montreal Rd. interact with the urban environment was explored.

Plazas are interconnected forming a unique language & pattern to a new neighbourhood in Vanier. Public Plazas start with a small open space which ivites pedestrians to the mixed-use nature of Montreal Rd. Then benches curve along the pedestrian streetscape opening to another plaza for the high-rise condo which leads to a public terrace.

The third plaza is sitiuated in the heart of the neighbourhood at the end of the pedestrian path that intersects the orthogonal axis along the masterplan. Dupuis Street is emphasized to engage the community with the other end of the site, connecting three institutional buildings: a new library, an art gallery and the new school that has been relocated.

Co-Habitat is a co-housing residence and care centre for COVID-19 long-hauler patience, therefore the design adopted biophilic design principles, including a CLT structure. The project provides the 60 residents in this project with a healthy, biophilic living that truly heals.

The site location is in the heart of Galt across from Grand River.

The site is currently split into four parcels, but the project aims to urbanize the four parcels into one big

CROSS-SECTION

1. The building relied on geothermal vertical closed loop wells sitiuated below the public plaza for radiant floor heating.

• A heat exchanger is sitiuated below ground next to the Heat Recovery Chiller.

• 16mm SmartTrac Panels act as a substrate to secure 10mm PEX/PERT radiant floor pipes. Overlayed with sheathing and hardwood flooring. These panels unlike concrete topping allow for a simpler maintenance access & can adapt for future room layout alterations* 2. Mechanical Ventilation rellies on an HRV for community areas, while ERV is used for individual units.

3. Solar Photovoltaics: • Bifacal Photovoltaics: Offers many advantages over traditional pvs. Power can be produced from both sides of the module, increasing total energy generation.

4. The use of Double-Skin Facade on the South facing glazed exterior wall to act as insulation against extreme tempratures, winds, and sound improving the building’s thermal efficiency for both high & low tempratures.

• The use of Double-Skin Facade created a nice greenhouse effect with louvres to provide some shading.

• The air buffer in between works as a barrier to heat loss during the winter. Sun heated air contained in the cavity can heat spaces outside the glass, reducing the demand for indoor heating system.

5. Waterwalls are introduced for two reason. One is for relaxation for people with long-term COVID symptoms. The other reason is to assist in heating & cooling ventilated air. Sheets of mesh are designed to be inside these large glass duct work. Ventilated fresh air comes down these shafts which have an open waterfall inside. AIR & WATER can exchange heat.

Greece has been on the front line of an influx of migrants crossing by boat from Turkey as part of Europe’s biggest migrant crisis since Word War II. There has been a notable increase in recent years of people arriving in Greek waters and especially on the Dodecanese islands, fleeing war, violence, and poverty in their home countries. Since the beginning of 2022, more than 46,000 refugees have arrived on Greek islands in inflatable boats on this cluster of islands (Fig.2) The panic-driven inflatable boats lead them to the ungoverned thresholds of Turkish and Greek waters, a treacherous journey that all too often ends in tragedy. Many boats capsizes in this risky crossing, and many end up dying, freezing, and have no where to call home. Both countries politically are not on good terms, and therefore end up blaming each other for this tragedy. Greece welcomed more than 3 million tourists in 2019, each visitor consumes an average of nine 1.5 littres bottles. Kalymnos island’s trash crisis has become a potent expression of the Aegean’s bottle addiction. Therefore, the island is dealing with contaminated water with microplastics that is threatening the fish species and sea sponges in Kalymnos island.

Located between the borded of Turkey and Greece, this project is set in two sites, a water-based site, and a land-based site. The water-based site offers an immediate shelter from sinking, freezing, and providing a place to call home temporarly, in a “grey area” where it is uncertain which country it belongs to. One the other hand, the land-based pier located on Kalymnos island, aims to provide all kinds of supplies and aid that gets directly sent out to the water-based shelters in between the two countries. The land-based pier deals with waste management that is linked to the municipality. The new port will offer all logistics to build an repair the water-based shelters which are sent out by red cross boars to offer an immediate assistance.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS AT IBI GROUP

Project Type: High-Rise Residential CO-OP WORK EXPERIENCE Date: Winter 2019 Location: 939 Eglinton Ave & VMC Supervising Architect: Henry Burstyn & Daniel Hsueh

A

During my time in IBI Group, I was involved in several design projects, but the main projects I was heavily involved in were 939 Eglinton Tower C as well as parking layouts for VMC. I worked on the design development for Tower C, producing a Sketchup 3D Model that was rendered by IBI Group’s visiulization team (Figure 1) I was able to create several elevation studies (Figure 2 and 3) that shows different material selection. Final elevations of the tower was submitted to the client for review.

I also worked on parking layouts for the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Festival development by Menkes and QuadReal.
