Η

κεραμοποιός Katharina Bolesch και ο σχεδιαστής κοσμημάτων και τεχνίτης Alexander Reichardt ζουν και εργάζονται στο χωριό Χαλκί, στη Νάξο των Κυκλάδων, όπου λειτουργούν το εργαστήρι, την έκθεση και το κατάστημά τους L’Olivier με την διεθνή ονομασία Fish & Olive. Το Χαλκί βρίσκεται στην καρδιά της Νάξου, στην περιοχή της Τραγαίας, «το τρίγωνο», μία περιοχή που είναι επίσης γνωστή με την αρχαία Ελληνική ονομασία Δρυμαλιάς, «το δάσος των ελαιόδεντρων». Το ελαιόδεντρο έχει βαθιά συμβολικό χαρακτήρα, όχι μόνο για την Ναξιώτικη κληρονομιά αλλά και για την κληρονομιά της Μεσογείου στο σύνολό της και η ελιά, σε συνδυασμό με το άλλο μεγάλο σύμβολο της Μεσογείου, το ψάρι, αποτελεί την έμπνευση της δουλειάς των Bolesch και Reichardt. Το μοτίβο της ελιάς χαρακτηρίζει την παραγωγή κεραμικών και πορσελάνης της Katharina, παρόλα αυτά, στις τρισδιάστατες απεικονίσεις της περιλαμβάνει επίσης σαύρες, μέλισσες και βατράχους καθώς επίσης και το κλήμα. Η δουλειά της είναι εντελώς χειροποίητη, από την έγχυση μέχρι τη διαμόρφωση, τη βαφή και την εφυάλωση. Κάθε κομμάτι ψήνεται δύο φορές σε πολύ υψηλή θερμοκρασία για την παραγωγή κεραμικών υψηλής αντοχής και ανθεκτικότητας. Η μοναδική ποιότητα των κεραμικών της Katharina αποτελεί αποτέλεσμα της δεξιοτεχνίας, της προσοχής και της υπομονής της ως τεχνίτη, σε συνδυασμό με το καλλιτεχνικό όραμά της. Ο συνεργάτης και σύζυγος της Katharina, Alexander, μεγάλωσε στον κόσμο της Μεσογείου. Έχει παρατηρήσει το θαλάσσιο περιβάλλον αυτού του κόσμου με τη ματιά του καλλιτέχνη κατά τη διάρκεια ταξιδιών επί πολλών ετών και μέσω της εμπειρίας που έχει αποκτήσει ως αυτοδύτης. Ο Alexander χρησιμοποιεί τώρα αυτήν τη σχέση του με τη θάλασσα για την παραγωγή σχεδίων ψαριών τόσο για τον εμπλουτισμό των κεραμικών της Katharina όσο επίσης και για δικά του κοσμήματα. Ζωγραφίζει

επίσης τα μοτίβα ψαριών του σε χαρτί και δημιουργεί χειροτεχνήματα σε άλλα μέσα, όπως το μάρμαρο, τα υφάσματα και το ξύλο. Στη δουλειά αυτών των δύο καλλιτεχνών, οι δημιουργικές επιρροές των Κυκλάδων και του Χαλκιού, έχουν οδηγήσει στη συγχώνευση των αρχαίων θεμάτων και συμβόλων του κόσμου της Μεσογείου με το σύγχρονο στυλ των κεραμικών και των κοσμημάτων. Τα κομμάτια που δημιουργούνται από το Fish & Olive ποικίλλουν από μοναδικά στοιχεία που αναγνωρίζονται ως υψηλής αξίας από διεθνείς συλλέκτες μέχρι οικονομικά προσιτά αντικείμενα απλής ομορφιάς. Η δουλειά τόσο της Katharina Bolesch όσο και του Alexander Reichardt έχει αποσπάσει διεθνή αναγνώριση. Η δουλειά της Katharina έχει εκτεθεί στην Ακαδημία Αθηνών κατά τη διάρκεια των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων του 2004 ενώ έχει παρουσιαστεί επίσης στα Ηνωμένα Έθνη στη Νέα Υόρκη. Το 2007, διοργανώθηκε μία μεγάλη έκθεση στο Μουσείο Σχεδίου (Iittala Group, Arabia Museum) στο Ελσίνκι, ενώ απεικονίσεις της δουλειάς της έχουν παρουσιαστεί σε διεθνείς εκδόσεις. Η δουλειά του Alexander συνδέεται στενά με το Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Γουλανδρή στην Αθήνα, το φημισμένο Cretaquarium και άλλες εκθέσεις τέχνης στην Ελλάδα. Το Fish & Olive έχει κύρια συμβολή στην αναγέννηση του Χαλκιού ως κυκλαδικού κέντρου πολιτισμού. Η έκθεση Fish & Olive, η οποία εγκαινιάστηκε το 2006 από την Κα Νίκη Γουλανδρή, αποτελεί κύριο σημείο πολιτιστικής, εμπορικής και κοινωνικής ανάπτυξης του Χαλκιού. Ένα περαιτέρω βήμα σε αυτήν την ανάπτυξη ήρθε με το αναγνωρισμένο Φεστιβάλ Μουσικής, Τέχνης & Λογοτεχνίας Axia Festival που διοργανώθηκε για πρώτη φορά το 2009 υπό την αιγίδα της Fish & Olive σε συνεργασία με το Διεθνές Μουσικό Σωματείο Gina Bachauer. Το Φεστιβάλ, στο οποίο εμφανίστηκαν κορυφαίοι Έλληνες ερμηνευτές, συμπεριέλαβε ολόκληρο το χωριό του Χαλκιού και έχει εξελιχθεί σε ετήσια εκδήλωση.

he art potter Katharina Bolesch and the jewellery designer and craftsman Alexander Reichardt live and work in the village of Halki on the Cycladean island of Naxos where their workshop, gallery and L’Olivier shop operate under the international name of Fish & Olive.

Halki is situated at the heart of Naxos in the region of the Tragaea, “the triangle”, an area that is known also by the ancient Greek name Drimalias, the “forest of olive trees”. The olive tree is deeply symbolic, not only of Naxian heritage but also of the Mediterranean as a whole and it is the olive, together with that other great Mediterranean symbol, the fish, that inspires the work of Bolesch and Reichardt.

The motif of the olive underpins Katharina’s stoneware and porcelain production but she also includes in her threedimensional imagery, lizards, bees and frogs as well as the vine.

Her work is entirely handmade, from the throwing over to the forming and to the painting and glazing. Each piece is fired twice at a very high temperature to produce stoneware ceramics of great strength and durability. The unique quality of Katharina’s pottery is the result of the skill, attention and patience of the craftswoman merged with artistic vision.

Katharina’s partner and husband, Alexander, grew up in the Mediterranean world. He has observed the marine environment of that world with an artist’s eye during many years of travel and through his experiences as a scuba diver. Alexander now uses this affinity with the sea to produce fish designs both as enhancements of Katharina’s ceramics and for his own jewellery. He also paints his fish motifs on paper and creates artifacts in other mediums, such as marble, textiles and wood.

In the work of these two artists, the creative influences of the Cyclades and of Halki has resulted in a merging of the ancient themes and symbols of the Mediterranean world with a modern style of ceramics and jewellery. The pieces created

by Fish & Olive range from unique items that are highly valued by international collectors to affordable objects of simple beauty.

The work of both Katharina Bolesch and Alexander Reichardt has gained worldwide recognition. Katharina’s work was displayed at the Academy of Athens during the 2004 Olympic Games and has been featured at the United Nations in New York. In 2007, a major exhibition was staged at the Design Museum (Iittala Group, Arabia Museum) in Helsinki, while illustrations of her work have been featured in international publications. Alexander’s work has close associations with the Goulandris Natural History Museum in Athens, the prestigious Cretaquarium, and with other galleries in Greece.

Fish & Olive has been a major contributor to the renaissance of Halki as a Cycladean centre of culture. The Fish & Olive gallery, which was opened in 2006 by Mrs. Niki Goulandris, is a focus of Halki’s growing cultural, commercial and social development. A further step in this development came with the acclaimed Axia Festival of Music, Art & Literature first staged in 2009 under the aegis of Fish & Olive in cooperation with the Gina Bachauer International Music Association. The festival, which featured leading Greek performers, embraced the entire village of Halki and is now an annual event.

a céramiste Katharina Bolesch et Alexander Reichardt, designer de bijoux et artisan, vivent et travaillent dans le village de Halki, à Naxos, dans les Cyclades. C’est là que fonctionnent leur atelier, leur galerie et leur magasin L’Olivier connu sous l’appellation internationale Fish & Olive. Halki est situé au cœur de Naxos, dans la région de la Traghéa, « le triangle », une région connue également sous l’ancien nom grec Drymalia, la forêt d’oliviers. Cet arbre possède un caractère intensément symbolique, non seulement pour l’héritage naxiote, mais aussi pour le patrimoine méditerranéen dans son ensemble. L’olive et le poisson, autre grand symbole de la Méditerranée, constituent l’inspiration de l’œuvre du couple Bolesch-Reichardt.

Le motif de l’olive caractérise la production des céramiques et de la porcelaine de Katharina. Cependant, dans les figures représentées en trois dimensions, elle incorpore également lézards, abeilles et grenouilles, ainsi que la vigne. Le travail est entièrement fait main, depuis le moulage jusqu’à la finition, à la peinture et à la glaçure. Chaque pièce est cuite deux fois à une très haute température, afin de produire des céramiques d’une résistance solide et durable. La qualité unique des poteries de Katharina est le résultat de la virtuosité, de l’attention et de la patience de la femme-artisan, soutenues par la vision de l’artiste. Alexander, collaborateur et conjoint de Katharina, a grandi dans l’univers méditerranéen. Durant ses nombreuses années de voyage et à travers l’expérience acquise dans la plongée sous-marine, il a observé l’environnement marin de ce monde avec un regard d’artiste. Il utilise maintenant cette relation avec la mer pour dessiner des poissons qui enrichissent à la fois les céramiques de Katharina et ses créations personnelles. Il peint aussi des motifs de poissons sur papier et il crée des œuvres sur

d’autres supports, tels le marbre, les tissus et le bois.

Dans le travail de ces deux artistes, les influences créatives des Cyclades et de Halki ont conduit à la fusion de thèmes anciens et de symboles du monde méditerranéen avec le style contemporain des céramiques et des bijoux. Fish & Olive propose une gamme de créations comportant de beaux objets financièrement accessibles et des œuvres uniques dont la grande valeur est reconnue par des collectionneurs internationaux. Le travail de Katharina Bolesch et celui d’Alexander Reichardt leur ont valu une reconnaissance internationale. L’œuvre de Katharina a été exposée à l’Académie d’Athènes durant les jeux Olympiques de 2004. Elle a également été présentée aux Nations-Unies, à New York. En 2007, une grande exposition fut organisée au Musée du Design ( Iittala Group, Arabia Museum ), à Helsinki, et des photographies de ses créations ont paru dans des publications internationales. L’œuvre d’Alexander est étroitement liée au Musée d’Histoire Naturelle Goulandris, à Athènes, au fameux Cretaquarium et à d’autres galeries d’art en Grèce.

Fish & Olive a principalement contribué à la renaissance de Halki comme centre de culture cycladique. L’exposition Fish & Olive, inaugurée en 2006 par Madame Niki Goulandris, constitue un signe majeur du développement culturel, économique et social de Halki. Une nouvelle étape de ce développement a été franchie avec le célèbre Festival de Musique, d’Art et de Littérature, « Axia Festival », organisé pour la première fois en 2009, sous l’égide de Fish & Olive, en collaboration avec le Corps de Musique International Gina Bachauer. Ce festival, où se produisirent des interprètes grecs de haut niveau, a rassemblé tout le village de Halki. Il est appelé à devenir un événement annuel.

’artista della ceramica Katharina Bolesch e l’orafo e designer di gioielli Alexander Reichardt vivono e lavorano nel villaggio di Halki, nell’isola cicladica di Naxos, dove il loro laboratorio, la galleria e il negozio L’Olivier operano congiuntamente con la denominazione internazionale di Fish & Olive.

Halki si trova nel cuore di Naxos, nella regione della Tragaea, «il triangolo», una zona nota anche con l’antico nome greco di Drimalias, la «foresta degli olivi». L’olivo è profondamente simbolico non solo nella tradizione naxiana, ma nell’intero bacino mediterraneo, ed è proprio l’olivo che insieme al pesce, l’altro grande simbolo mediterraneo, ispira il lavoro della Bolesch e di Reichardt.

Il motivo dell’olivo ricorre nella produzione di ceramiche e porcellane di Katharina, che però ama popolare le sue immagini tridimensionali anche con la lucertola, l’ape e la rana, nonché la vite. I suoi pezzi sono eseguiti completamente a mano, dalla tornitura alla modellazione, fino alla pittura e alla smaltatura. Ogni pezzo subisce una doppia cottura ad altissima temperatura, allo scopo di produrre ceramica di grande solidità e durevolezza. La straordinaria qualità delle ceramiche di Katharina è il risultato dell’abilità, dell’attenzione e della pazienza artigianali unite alla visione dell’artista.

Alexander è socio e marito di Katharina, è cresciuto nel mondo mediterraneo, e ne ha osservato l’ambiente marino con gli occhi dell’artista in tanti anni di viaggi e di immersione subacquea. Alexander sfrutta ora la sua affinità con il mare per creare motivi ittici, sia per valorizzare le ceramiche di Katharina e sia per le sue opere di oreficeria. Dipinge anche i

suoi originali pesci su carta e lavora altri materiali quali marmo, tessuti e legno.

Nell’opera di questi due artisti, le influenze creative delle Cicladi e di Halki si concretizzano in una fusione dei temi e dei simboli antichi del mondo mediterraneo con uno stile moderno di ceramica e oreficeria. Le opere create da Fish & Olive vanno dai pezzi unici, apprezzatissimi dai collezionisti di tutto il mondo, agli oggetti di semplice bellezza alla portata di tutti.

Le opere di Katharina Bolesch e Alexander Reichardt sono riconosciute a livello mondiale. I pezzi di Katharina sono stati esposti all’Accademia di Atene durante le Olimpiadi del 2004, e alle Nazioni Unite a New York. Nel 2007 è stata organizzata una grande mostra al Museo del Design (Iittala Group, Arabia Museum) di Helsinki, e le immagini delle opere sono apparse all’interno di pubblicazioni internazionali. Il festival, che ha visto la partecipazione di grandi artisti greci, ha coinvolto tutto il villaggio di Halki e si avvia a diventare un appuntamento annuale.

Hier betreiben sie ihr Atelier, ihr Geschäft und ihre Galerie unter dem international anerkannten Namen Fish & Olive.

Halki liegt im Herzen Naxos, in der Tragaea, einem Gebiet, das auch unter dem altgriechischen Namen Drimalias „Wald der Olivenbäume“ bekannt ist. Dem Olivenbaum wohnt eine tiefe Symbolik inne, die nicht nur für das naxotische Erbe, sondern ebenso für den gesamten Mittelmeerraum bezeichnend ist. Daher sind es die Olive, gemeinsam mit dem nicht weniger bedeutsamen mediterranen Symbol, dem Fisch, die die Keramik- und Designarbeiten von Katharina Bolesch und Alexander Reichardt inspirieren. Sowohl das mediterrane Motiv der Olive und der Weinrebe als auch kleine Frösche, Bienen und Eidechsen umspielen Katharinas Keramik- und Porzellanarbeiten und sind künstlerische Details innerhalb ihres kreativen Wirkens. Katharinas Arbeiten entstehen alle in vollkommener Handarbeit.

Vom Drehen über das Formen bis hin zum Bemalen und der Glasur. Jedes Stück wird bei sehr hoher Temperatur zweimal gebrannt, was eine herausragende Stabilität und Belastbarkeit bewirkt. Die einmalige Qualität von Katharinas Kunstkeramik ist das Ergebnis ihrer handwerklichen Fertigkeiten, ihrer Hingabe und Geduld zusammen mit dem ihr eigenen künstlerischen Blick.

Alexander, Partner und Ehemann von Katharina, wuchs in der mediterranen Welt auf. Als Reisender und Tiefseetaucher unterwegs und mit dem Blickwinkel eines Künstlers, ließ er sich von seiner maritimen Umgebung inspirieren.

Aus Alexanders Leidenschaft für das Meer entstand sein eigenes Fischdesign, das sich unverkennbar auf Katharinas Keramik und in seiner edlen Schmuckkollektion wiederfindet. Seine Fischmotive malt er ferner auf Papier und nutzt für seine

künstlerischen Kreationen auch andere Materialien, wie zum Beispiel Marmor, Holz und Textil. Die kreativen Einflüsse der Kykladen und Halkis haben in den Arbeiten dieser beiden Künstler eine Verschmelzung alter Themen und Symbole der mediterranen Welt mit einem modernen Stil der Keramik und des Schmuckdesigns bewirkt. Die Kunst-, Keramik und Schmuckobjekte, die von Fish & Olive kreiert werden, ob es nun die von internationalen Sammlern hoch geschätzten Einzelstücke sind, oder die erschwinglichen alltäglicheren Objekte, sie alle haben etwas gemeinsam: Sie bestechen durch ihre eigene und schlichte Schönheit. Die Arbeiten von sowohl Katharina Bolesch als auch Alexander Reichardt haben weltweite Anerkennung errungen. Katharinas Keramik wurde während der Olympischen Spiele 2004 in der Athener Akademie und bei den Vereinten Nationen in New York ausgestellt. Im Jahre 2007 fand eine größere Ausstellung im Museum für Design (Iittala Gruppe, Arabisches Museum) in Helsinki statt.

Außerdem wurden ihre Arbeiten in verschiedenen internationalen Publikationen abgebildet. Alexanders Wirken steht in engem Zusammenhang mit dem Goulandris Naturhistorischen Museum in Athen, dem renommierten Cretaquarium und mit anderen Galerien in Griechenland.

Fish & Olive hat in großem Umfang zur Wiedergeburt von Halki als ein Zentrum kykladischer Kultur beigetragen.

Die Fish & Olive Gallerie, die im Jahre 2006 von Frau Niki Goulandris eröffnet wurde, steht im Mittelpunkt der zunehmenden kulturellen, kommerziellen und sozialen Entwicklung Halkis. Ein weiterer Schritt in dieser Entwicklung wurde durch das gefeierte Axia Festival für Musik, Kunst & Literatur gesetzt, das erstmals 2009 unter der Schirmherrschaft von Fish & Olive in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Gina Bachauer Internationalen Musikverband aufgeführt wurde. Das Festival, bei dem hochrangige griechische Künstler auftraten, umfaßte das gesamte Dorf Halki und soll zu einem alljährlichen Ereignis werden.

ι εφυαλωμένες κεραμικές δημιουργίες της Katharina Bolesch είναι «αχειροποίητα» ποιήματα «υψηλής» τέχνης από μία ταπεινή ύλη. Τα πολύμορφα κεραμικά σε διάφορες φόρμες επεξεργασμένης αισθητικής —κύπελλα, μπολ, λεκανίδες, ροές, χρηστικά και διακοσμητικά αγγεία— είναι πιστές αναφορές στο κάλλος και στη φωτογένεια των θεμάτων της Μεσογείου. Στο έργο της αντανακλά η καλλιτεχνική ευαισθησία, ένα όραμα και συναίσθημα που αποδίδουν, όχι μόνο τη μορφή αλλά και την αύρα του ιερού δέντρου της ελιάς. Πώς αποδίδει, άραγε, με τόση πιστότητα το αιγαιοπελαγίτικο φως που αντανακλά πάνω στο αειθαλές φύλλωμα; Τα γκριζοπράσινα, παιχνιδιάρικα, σκιρτόζα φύλλα της ελιάς του μεσογειακού τοπίου αλλά και των ποιητών και των λογοτεχνών; Πώς προσεγγίζει, με τελειότητα, την πολυπόθητη ομορφιά του καρπού, που για αιώνες υμνήθηκε και παρομοιάστηκε με το απαράμιλλο κάλλος των ματιών της γυναίκας; Πώς με την γήινη ύλη πλέκει στεφάνια και πλοχμούς, θαρρείς πως είναι πλεγμένα μ’ αγριλίσια ευλύγιστα ξύλα; Εκφραστικά πλασμένοι κλάδοι ελαίας, βαθιά ριζωμένοι στην ιστορία και τον πολιτισμό του Αιγαίου, τόπου διαμονής από επιλογή, τα τελευταία χρόνια, της καλλιτέχνιδας. Τα ανάγλυφα παιχνιδίσματά της είναι η συνέπεια μίας αισθητικής μύησης στο νέο μεσογειακό περιβάλλον της Γερμανίδας δημιουργού. Μία αισθητήρια βίωση που η καλλιτεχνική της παιδεία της επέτρεψε να δημιουργήσει με αυθεντικότητα τα κεραμικά της έργα. Νατουραλιστικές αποδόσεις δοσμένες με αναγεννησιακή τελειότητα και προσωπικό ύφος είναι οι μορφοπλαστικές διαρθρώσεις των κλαδιών της ελιάς στο έργο της Katharina Bolesch. Ολάκερος ο θαλασσινός κόσμος ζωντανεύει στα σχέδια του Alex Reichardt. Ψάρια και ψαράκια ζωγραφισμένα σε κεραμικά σκεύη, είτε σε έργα χαρακτικής, είτε δουλεμένα σε ασημένια κοσμήματα, είτε ακόμα ανάγλυφα σε μάρμαρο, αποτελούν τις καλλιτεχνικές χειροτεχνίες του Alex. Ο θαλασσινός μικρόκοσμος σε κίνηση μας ταξιδεύει σε μακρινούς κι ονειρεμένους κόσμους, διεγείροντας αρχέγονους συνειρμούς. Τα ψάρια, ταυτόσημα της μεσογειακής πολιτιστικής ταυτότητας και σύμβολα των πανάρχαιων πολιτισμών της, ζωντανεύουν με την ξεχωριστή αισθητική του καλλιτέχνη.

atharina Bolesch’s glazed ceramics are exquisite works of art created from a simple material. Her wide repertoire, which includes cups, bowls, dishes and pouring vessels is both practical and decorative. It represents the highest aesthetic principles. Mediterranean themes feature strongly and reflect the beauty of her natural environment. It is the sensitivity of the artist that allows not only the shape, but the spirit of the sacred olive tree to be rendered so superbly.

How does she reproduce so effectively the quality of the Aegean light reflected on the ever green foliage, on the greygreen leaves of the olive tree of the Mediterranean landscape, the olive tree beloved by poets and writers? How does she depict so realistically the much-desired fruit of the tree that has been celebrated for centuries and even likened to the incomparable beauty of a woman’s eyes? How does she, with this earthly material, weave wreathes and bonds that look as if they have been woven with real leaves and stalks?

The branches of the olive tree, that have been woven so expressively, are deeply rooted in the history and culture of the Aegean, where the artist has made her home. These playful reliefs represent the relationship of this German artist to her Mediterranean environment and it is this, coupled with her artistic training, that allow her to create ceramics with such authenticity. Her work is both an hymn to the olive tree and a reflection of her own unique personal style.

The whole wide marine world comes to life in the designs of Alexander Reichardt. Fish and little fish painted on ceramic utensils, or on engraved works, or fashioned on silver jewellery, or even appearing as murals on marble, form the artistic handicraft of Alexander. The marine microcosm in motion takes us to travel in far away dreamlands, arousing primordial chains of thought. The fish, tantamount to the Mediterranean cultural identity and symbols of its age old civilizations, come to life through the singular aestheticism of the artist.

Να τολμήσεις ξένος εσύ, να συνεχίσεις μία παράδοση αιώνων απαιτούσε την βαθιά γνώση της κεραμικής τέχνης της Katharina και την έμπνευση και το έναυσμα του Alexander. Ιστορικά, η αναφορά στα ονόματα των αρχαίων κεραμέων ήταν σπάνια. Συναντούμε όμως τις λέξεις «εποίησεν» και «έγραφσεν» που διαχωρίζουν τον αγγειοπλάστη από τον αγγειογράφο. Στο σημερινό Χαλκί, οι δυο αυτές τέχνες εκφράζονται με το ζεύγος Katharina Bolesch και Alexander Reichardt. Η Katharina «ποιεί» την αγγειοπλασία, δίνοντας μορφή στο αγγείο και προχωρεί στην πλαστική διαμόρφωση των συμβόλων της —κλάδο ελιάς, χταπόδι κ.ά.— ενώ ο Alexander προχωρεί στην αγγειογραφία με τη διακριτική διάχυση των ψαριών στην επιφάνεια του αγγείου. Το έργο του αγγίζει και άλλα υλικά, όπως το ασήμι, το ξύλο κ.ά. Σύμβολά τους παραμένουν μορφές της ελληνικής γης και θάλασσας. Στο Μουσείο Γουλανδρή, Κέντρο Γαία, τα έργα τους βρήκαν δικαιωματικά τη θέση τους.

he partnership of the couple Katharina Bolesch and Alexander Reichardt in Naxos, the opening of their workshop L’Olivier at Halki, represents boldness and commitment to tradition as well as to each other. Pottery in Naxos in the context of Cycladic art has had a long history.

As a foreigner, to dare to carry on a tradition that had gone on for centuries demanded Katharina’s in depth-knowledge of ceramic art and the inspiration and sparkle of Alexander.

Mentioning the names of the ancient potters was rare back in history. We do though come across the words “made” and “wrote” which distinguish the potter from the painter. In Halki those two arts are expressed by the couple Katharina Bolesch and Alexander Reichardt.

Katharina throws, giving shape to the pot and carries on to the plastic formation of symbols, branch of olive tree, octopus and others, while Alexander decorates with a discreet scattering of fish on the surface of the vessel. His work incorporates such varied materials as silver, marble and wood.

Their motifs are the symbols of the Greek land and sea. In the Goulandris Museum, the Gaia Center, their work has found its rightful place.

Χρησιμοποιεί ένα τοπικό σχεδιαστικό μοτίβο, την ελιά, τον ευαίσθητο καρπό της Ελληνικής υπαίθρου. Οι δημιουργίες της σε τρισδιάστατο καμβά, γίνονται από το ίδιο χώμα που φυτρώνουν οι ελιές, μαζί με νερό και χρωματίζονται από φυσικές χρωστικές ύλες. Κατασκευάζει ευαίσθητη και εύθραυστη κεραμική αντλώντας έμπνευση από τη μνήμη των χρόνων που αναγνωρίζουμε από την ιστορία και το παρελθόν μας. Κατασκευάζει αυτά τα αντικείμενα με αρμονία και αξιοπρέπεια, ισορροπώντας την δύναμη με την απλότητα. Αντλεί τα θέματά της από τη φύση, χρησιμοποιεί τη φύση και ενσωματώνει την ελιά, τα κλαδιά, τα φύλλα, συνδυάζοντας την αισθητική ομορφιά με την τρυφερή οικειότητα. Συλλαμβάνει το φιλήδονο μυστήριο της φύσης συνδέοντας το αντικείμενο με την διακόσμηση κατά τρόπο ρεαλιστικό και πειστικό με επίπονη δεξιότητα. Το τελικό προϊόν είναι μεγαλειώδες, απτό, ορατό, με αισθητή παρουσία, άμεσο και τρυφερό έμβλημα αθωότητας, μοναδικό όπως το χέρι, η καρδιά και η ψυχή της ίδιας της κεραμίστριας.

n the Island of Naxos, a treasure exists. Katharina Bolesch, an artist of exceptional skill and devotion to her work. Her life as art; her art as life. She uses a local Greek motif —the delicate fruit of the ancient landscape—, the olive. Her creations are on a three-dimensional canvas made from the same earth as the olive mixed with water and colored by pigments.

She creates vessels —sensual, fragile— drawn from the same memory of times we recognize in history and in our past. She creates these objects with such harmony and dignity — a matter of balancing strength with simplicity. She extracts these forms from nature, using nature, and incorporates the olive, the branch, the leaves in a combination of aesthetic beauty and tender familiarity. She captures the sensuous mystery of nature combining the two —paint and object— with painstaking dexterity and believable realism. The end result is sublime, physical, natural, optical, and a gentle forthright emblem of innocence unique only as the potter’s own hand, heart and soul.

Μικέλε Μπουζίρι Βίτσι είναι απόγονος παλιάς οικογένειας αρχιτεκτόνων από το 1600. Με καταγωγή από τη Ρώμη, πεδίο δράσης του υπήρξε η κοντινή ακτή της Sebavdia, όπου επινόησε την ρυμοτομία και τους κανόνες για την προστασία του περιβάλλοντος. Πέτυχε να εναρμονίσει τα κτίρια με τη φύση σε ότι αφορά την εισαγωγή και επικράτηση των στοιχείων της φύσης και των φυσικών χρωμάτων. Ενσωμάτωσε διάφορα στοιχεία από Μεσογειακές χώρες συμπεριλαμβανομένων της Τυνησίας, του Μαρόκου, της Ισπανίας και της Ελλάδας και ανέπτυξε αυτό που είναι γνωστό στις μέρες μας ως «Μεσογειακή Αρχιτεκτονική». Χρησιμοποιεί καμπύλους ασβεστωμένους τοίχους, διαδοχικά βόλτα, Αραβικούς θόλους, και βαμμένα παντζούρια και πέργκολες με χαρούμενα χρώματα πράσινο ή μπλε. Πετυχαίνει ένα ευχάριστο αποτέλεσμα τονίζοντας το τοπίο, κερδίζοντας έτσι την εκτίμηση των επίδοξων ιδιοκτητών παραθεριστικών κατοικιών στις ακτές της Ιταλίας. Προσκεκλημένος από τον Αγά Χαν να συνεργασθεί με τον Λουίντζι Βιέττι και τον Ζακ Κουέλ και να σχηματίσουν την Αρχιτεκτονική Επιτροπή στην Κόστα Σμεράλδα, ο Μπουζίρι Βίτσι υλοποίησε αρκετά προγράμματα που έγιναν ορόσημα στην ακτή της Σαρδηνίας: το συγκρότημα Σα Κόνκα στο λόφο του Πόρτο Σέρβο, το γειτονικό ξενοδοχείο Λούτσι ντι λα Μουντάνια και το ξενοδοχείο Ροματσίνο για να καταλήξει στο αριστούργημά του την εκκλησία Στέλλα Μάρις. Στην οικογενειακή παράδοση του Μικέλε Μπουζίρι Βίτσι ακολούθησε ο γιός του Ντζιανκάρλο Μπουζίρι Βίτσι και οι δύο μαζί σχεδίασαν πολλές πανέμορφες βίλες, το Σάμπα Ιλντε και τα διαμερίσματα Σας Πέντρας στην ακτή κοντά στη Μαρίνα. have been coming to the Cyclades for several years now, diving into the clear Greek waters for precious refuge from the summer heat and world’s fevers. The sea is beautiful here. So are the islands, and the people. But here, as everywhere on our planet we foolishly call “Earth” when it is clearly mostly water, the ocean is a deceiving mirror, and only those who dive beneath its surface witness its true state. Like a mute patient incapable of describing its disease to a doctor, the ocean looks the same, whether it is alive and healthy or agonizing and empty.

The vast blue desert, which has served and fed men forever, is showing its limits. Every year, fishermen and divers alike lament the brutal degradation of marine life. For too long we have thought that the sea was an endless horn of abundance.

Today, with our knowledge, technology and education,

we can reverse the tendency. We can be engineers of a better world. We can cultivate the ocean like a garden, so that our children will reap its yield. We must create marine sanctuaries, places where fish stocks and marine life in general are allowed to recover. These will benefit everyone, from the fishermen, whose catch will increase outside the protected area, to tourism businesses who will attract more customers. Most of all, we will be proud to tell our children one day: “Yes, nature has suffered from the activities of my generation. But here is my gift to you: a garden full of life, a message of hope for generations to follow”.

Nell’e voluzione biologica della specie i segni di questo suo passato riemergono in maniera inattesa negli individui. È forse questa molla atavica a spingere verso la sua liberazione la forza creativa di Alexander Reichardt? Non lo sappiamo e questa può essere un’interpretazione astrusa ancorché affascinante. Quello che sappiamo è che nelle ceramiche, nei gioielli, nelle lampade scolpite che questo artista artigiano elabora nel silenzio di Halki, il sogno di una vita sottomarina prende forma, disseminando di questo segno i muri delle case amiche. Esso traccia un percorso che da Naxos prende la via del mondo, insieme al segno antico, resistente dell’ulivo che la sua compagna Katharina Bolesch plasma giorno dopo giorno, con inesausta serenità. Pesce e ulivo sono la ricchezza del Mediterraneo, ma anche la visione di un ecosistema sostenibile, essenzializzato, in pace col mondo. La scelta totemica di questi due elementi rinvia ancora una volta al mito, alla forza primordiale delle incisioni rupestri, dei disegni minoici, ai lavori dei tempi in cui sognare una cosa ed essere quella cosa era tutt’uno.

ankind sprang from fish and powerful elements of this biological heritage sometimes resurface in gifted individuals in unexpected ways. Could Alexander Reichardt’s creative force have been unleashed through this atavistic impulse? We cannot know for sure, and this interpretation could be as abstruse as it is fascinating. What we know for sure is that the dream of an undersea life comes alive in the ceramics, jewellery and marble lamps created by this artist-artisan in the silence of Halki; his signature adorns the houses of friends around the world. It traces a path that starts from Naxos and travels the whole world, accompanied by the 38

ancient, immortal symbol of the olive tree crafted day after day, with serenity, by Alexander’s partner, Katharina Bolesch.

Fish and the olive tree signify the riches of the Mediterranean world, but they are also the vision of a sustainable benign ecosystem that is at peace with the world. The totemic choice of these two elements takes us once again back to the myth, to the primeval force of cave art, of Minoan drawings, of artworks from an era when dreaming of something meant being that something. And it is fascinating to realise how the works of Alex and Katharina, and their power, reflect the energy of two artists, perfectly merging the kinetics of the mind at work, the hand that moulds and the eye contemplating it all.

Le poisson et L’Olivier constituent la richesse de l’univers méditerranéen, mais ils représentent aussi la vision d’un écosystème durable, essentialisé, en harmonie avec le monde. Le choix totémique de ces deux éléments nous ramène une fois encore au mythe, à la force primitive des gravures rupestres, aux dessins minoens, aux oeuvres des temps où imaginer une chose lui insufflait la vie. Αρκετοί κεραμοποιοί εγκατέλειψαν το Ιράν μετά την εισβολή των Μογγόλων και κάποιοι από αυτούς έφτασαν στην Ισπανία φέρνοντας μαζί τους την τεχνική και τα μοτίβα των ψαριών. hope you will continue this wonderful work, to preserve the heritage of our ancestors. The motif of the fish can be traced from Iran to Egypt and from there was exported to Spain. All these potters escaped from Iran after the Mongol invasion, and some of them arrived in Spain bringing the techniques and the motifs, the fish motif included, to Spain.

In Greece, it is linked with the worship of Apollo and the myth about the dolphin saving humans.

ραματίστηκα το Axia International Festival (Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Αξία) θαυμάζοντας τα εκλεπτυσμένα και ευφάνταστα δημιουργήματα του εξαίρετου ζεύγους κεραμιστών Alexander Reichardt και Katharina Bolesch. Σύντομα γίναμε στενοί φίλοι και συμφωνήσαμε ότι θα έπρεπε να θεσπιστεί στη Νάξο μια υψηλών προδιαγραφών διοργάνωση που θα λαβαίνει χώρα κάθε καλοκαίρι. Τέσσερα χρόνια αργότερα, το 2011, με υπερηφάνεια παρουσιάζουμε ένα Φεστιβάλ το οποίο προτείνει συναρπαστικές συναυλίες και καλλιτεχνικές εκδηλώσεις που τραβούν την προσοχή του διεθνούς κοινού. Κάθε Αύγουστο, η Νάξος αποτελεί σημείο συνάντησης διάσημων καλλιτεχνών, ανερχόμενων αστέρων της κλασσικής και Jazz μουσικής σκηνής, προσωπικοτήτων των γραμμάτων, αρχιτεκτόνων και διακεκριμένων επιστημόνων και περιβαντολόγων. Είναι μάλλον δύσκολο να φανταστεί κανείς έναν ωραιότερο τόπο για να βρεθεί τον Αύγουστο.

first dreamt of Axia International Festival admiring the delicate and imaginative work created by the marvelous couple of ceramists Alexander Reichardt and Katharina Bolesch. We soon became very close friends and agreed that a high quality cultural organization should be formed on the beautiful Island of Naxos.

Today we proudly present a Festival that offers exciting concerts and artistic events that attract the attention of the international public.

Every August, Naxos becomes a special meeting point for famous artists, rising stars of the classical and Jazz music scene, literary figures, architects and distinguished scientists and environmentalists.

It is actually rather difficult to imagine a better place to be in August.
