2020 Fall-2021 Spring Graduation Project // Cultural Landscape

Old Dairy Farm, Chi Fu Valley, Pokfulam, HK

The lack of a policy to preserve cultural landscapes has led to the abandonment of a valuable industrialagricultural heritage site, the Old Dairy Farm (18861983). This project aims to propose a landscape approach to revitalise the abandoned cultural site for the benefit of the Old Dairy Farm and review the conservation policy in Hong Kong. The concepts seek to connect Pokfulam Village with the city and reveal its history to the public. The site will be developed into a self-sustaining ecological park.

Old Dairy Farm's current condition

• abandoned, some ruins were under protection

• high ecological value

• near residential housing

Material of Historic Ruins:

History analysis:

Ecology analysis:

Individual work // Instructor: Dr. CHAN Yin Lun

Problem:

The existing site has left some farm facilities, but they have not been preserved. The construction of the Chi Fu Fa Yuen has isolated the historic site from access and visibility. However, the history of Old Dairy Farm has affected the development of Pokfulam, which exists a strong relationship and meaning to the site.

Strategy:

Revitalising Abandoned Cultural Site by Landscape Approach: Biodiversity Based Dairy Farming

Design Objectives:

• Connect the Chi Fu Valley and the community

• Bringing back the history of the land in Chi Fu Fa Yuen

• Introduce dairy cow, revitalise the site into its “Golden Age”

• Create and consider cultural, ecological and economical values.

The Flowing of River

2020 Spring // Studio: Sustainable Landscape Design

Long Valley, Sheung Shui, HK

Individual work // Instructor: Mr. KWOK King Chung, Jevi

Long Valley has a long history of river, Sheung Yue River. This river has witnessed the history of Long Valley and Ho Sheung Heung, from dryland agriculture to wetland, from branching out to merging. Today, this river has changed a lot and the agricultural system is different from the past. Here is a concept to restore the branch of the river, benefits for the environment, society and economy.

Way to Community

2019 Fall // Studio: Urban Regeneration //Place-making & pocket park Central, HK

Individual work // Instructor: Ms. NG, Sylvia

The site has many residential uses, as well as historic and commercial uses. However, there is a lack of public community areas.

In Way to Community was designed to bring a neighborhood friendly concept through the site. In order to provide a more comprehensive design, the design approach is to divide the site into five zones. The design elements will vary depending on each area.

Area 2 Tank Lane

Tank Lane used to be a water supply area. As a back alley and a link to the street, it has the potential to become another main pocket park with memorial water feature. Proposed enlarge area2 is a muti-function area.

Design Objectives:

• Make this long and narrow back alley brighter and fresher

• Tell a story of the local history

• Make communities more sociable

Design Strategy:

The area is made up of two main water features, a long water feature that rises along the roadside with underwater streamlined terrain that symbolises the history of people queuing for water in the past. A smaller water feature provides a space for relaxation and allows people to get close to the water in urban.

Material in use:

Planting: Sitting area

Area 6 Shing Wong Street

A long time ago, there was a Shing Wong Temple in Shing Wong Street. This is now a derelict space surrounded by buildings of historical interest.

Design Objectives:

• Maintain and respect local historical character

• Tell a story of the local history

• Make communities more sociable

Design Strategy:

The V-shaped slope and grassy area allow the space to blend in with the existing landform. Maintain and respect local historical character. Individual work

With great enthusiasm and interest, I studied visual art in high school and I was active in joining various art and craft projects. The idea for the work comes from three Chinese proverbs about reminders and inspirations of life. The use of food and Chinese landscape painting figuratively presents the current problems of society.

吃得苦中苦 方為人上人

Literally meaning: to be better than others, one must suffer Actually meaning: Only if you can stand the hardest of hardships can you rise

食鹽多過你食米

Literally meaning: I took more salt than you ate rice

Actually meaning: I have more experiences than you

食得鹹魚抵得渴

Literally meaning: if one eats salted fish, one must be able to stand the thirst

Actually meaning: there is no rose without a thorn
