My beliefs

As I get older, my aims in architecture are starting to become clearer. At this point in my development as an architect they are to create spaces that have a sense of personal identity. This, I believe, can be achieved by refocussing the users on the material and sensory qualities of the space, that is, to create memorable spaces in which touch and sound as well as sight come into play.

It is only honest to say that I cannot yet do this. For a long time, as I searched within architecture and within myself, I felt spiritually barren. I have had ten years of experience in schools of architecture and professional offices where I concentrated on creating a sense of belonging, reconfiguring functions and deliberating spatial issues. But in this process I came to feel that I had lost something of my sense of what was fundamental about design. It was this lack of faith in architecture that led me to come abroad to study. Fortunately I found what I had lost which was materiality. I have come to understand that in making a building ‘materiality’ extends beyond the selection of materials and must also include the manner of construction, the technologies and skills of the builders and the time and place of creation.

This portfolio shows some of the work I have been engaged in over the past four years. These projects display my beliefs about how one can make places which have a sense of personal identity. I am not yet satisfied with them but they are part of my growth. I am still travelling on the path towards architecture.

01 Mountain House (Concept design) Mt Roskill, Auckland, New Zealand, 2019

This project is located in a narrow site, only 534m2 within existing building . The client expressed two requirements. First, she would like to see the city view in her future house. Second, she will rent out at least two bedrooms to pay mortage.

By the end, the house was designed as 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms flat.The master bedroom is set west facing where brings in the city view. The other four bedrooms are set seperately with their own bathroom. Besides, living space is north facing both indoors and outside.

02 11 building consents Auckland, New Zealand, 2018 During the year of 2018, I am mainly undertaking 11 building consent documentations, 3 houses have been build and the others have been lodged or are being construction.

In these projects, I am responsible for builiding consent drawings as well as cooperating with truss and framing manufacturers, civil engineers, structure engineers and builders.

04 Apartment renovation Chengdu, Sichuan,China 2017 Dwelling is the basic requirement of human beings. How to provide a decent modern Chinese life through upgrading people's living environment will be the issue for our generations. This project gives me an opportunity to rethink our daily life. I try to change the mass of daily life into a sequential and disciplined place whilst stimulating more activities happen inside the family members.

In this project, my duty is doing design document including generating plans and structure, building up 3D model, doing renderings and co-operate with structure engineer to simplify the structure.

From Feb to August of 2016, I was doing a part time job at Christian Anderson Architects. I was envolved into a series of high end residential projects. 06 A Journey Through Sound and Light Waikumete Cemetery Development Based on the background of the crisis of memory in contemporary world, the denial of death of human nature, the urgent need for burial plots, I propose to build a new cemetery in Auckland. A cemetery is a container of memories of our city which serves a basic human need to memorize and be memorized. It is so crucial for us because “memories are stepping stones to the past and the future� which links the generations. What I want to create is more than a building but a peaceful and strong atmosphere, where people could have rich perceptions of a place. And those perceptions could arouse some emotions in their memories. Also, their experience in a place would construct a new memory. Within this atmosphere the bereaved could feel the power of peaceful and heal themselves while others could trap into thought and rethink about life for a while.

2 Entrance hall Two architecture strategies are applied to create a touching place. One of the architectural methodologies is a ritual created by a series of functions strung by linear arrangement. Further, a series of surprising spaces is created by spatial contrast. 07 6 week studio projects in semester 1 Re-Designing Architectural Education The suburban campus setting of Unitec’s School of Architecture limits the physical interaction that can occur between lecturers and students alike in both different years and different departments. This can result in reduced collaboration and may also contribute to misunderstandings among students of different departments. The school building has historically therefore not contributed enough to the social transparency required to enhance cooperation between architecture students from different years.

The School of Architectural also needs to review its importance to the whole Unitec campus. Designing a new school presents an opportunity to develop and better define its role as an architectural educator.

The basic requirements of the new school comprise: Design studios Critique spaces Computer lab

Lecture theatres Administration and staff offices Public spaces

1. I proposed that the new design should take advantage of the landscape so that the outside space would be created inside the architecture school’s physical perimeter. These outside spaces would be available equally to students from different years, thereby creating a sense of belonging 2.I also proposed that the new school be located in the centre of the Unitec campus, so that its workshop would be close to Unitec’s carpentry construction site. The public parts of the architecture school, such as the library, theatre and gallery would be on the side opposite to other departments of campus. This layout would make it easy for architecture students to utilise resources of whole campus and also for students from other Unitec departments to get to know more about the architecture school.

08 Multi-Unit appartment Xiamen, China 2014 From 2014 to 2015, our design team cooperated with HOK to achieve large scale urban complex design. Our design team was incharge of Residential blocks part.

In pre-design stage, my role is to help senior architect coordinate design team to achieve presentation documents including analysing context and constrains, questioning brief, considering social and culture impact and testing design solutions.

In Resource concent stage, my duty was to help senior archiect propose site planning as well as design the shape of a single building in Sketch-up and do renderings. In building consent stage, I am incharged of construction documentations of 2 multi-unit residential buildings. My work included drawing plans, elevations, sections and detail drawings in AutoCAD whilst cooperating with clients and coordinating civil engineers, infrastructure engineers and curtain wall engineers.

09 Observation tower competition, 2014

This was a competition organised by Xiamen government. They wanted to build a landmark on top of the hill in the Haicang district.

The required size of this building is 3000 square meters and height of no more than 30 meters.Architects should choose the site on their own and provide the function of the building. Actually, Haicang district and Xiamen island are similar to the relationship between the north shore and Auckland City. You should pass through a bridge like the Auckland Harbor bridge to go to Haicang.

My partners and I took part in this competition.In the beginning, there are several questions we need to answer. Where should we choose our site? What is the problem we need to solve through this project? What is the strategy we should take towards the problem?

Based on these questions, we analyzed the location and visited the site. We found out that although the hill is not very high, the high points of the terrain provide a panoramic view of Xiamen island. The other is, when you enter Haicang district, you must pass through a bridge and this building will be the first you can see in Haicang district. Definitely, the tower being looked at and good looking are the questions raised by this project. Being looked means this building should be noticeable and become a landmark of this area.

And good looking means it is a place where people could get the best view of it. These two questions represent two aspects of the project which are concept and function.

We answered these two questions through our design.

10 First Place of a site planning competition, 2012 This was a competition organised by a real estate company. Because the land was to be reclaimed from sea, architects had to not only plan the location of every building but also decide the location of the land. So the questions that had to be answered were how to: solve the relation between land and sea; satisfy the plot rate provided by government; create value for the real estate company; and create a sense of belonging for the community.

There was also a competition inside our design team. Everyone in our team had to provide his or her own design. I researched the traditional European town, the Chinese water town and classical Chinese gardens to rethink the relationship between land and water. I abstracted the structure of the water town, applied this to the high density villa area and adopted the Chinese classical garden layout of "a pool of three mountains" to create a small island in the centre of a lake.

My design presented a good answer for the above four key questions. The concept of applying a traditional water town into the site plan solved the problem of the high density required to meet the plot rate and also created a sense of belonging for the community. The small island in the centre of the lake brings high value for the developer because the customer will become the owner of an island. The island could be sold for about 15,600,000 RMB (3,900,000 NZD). My concept got high praise from my manager and from my clients. The area is now under construction and will soon be able to be seen on Google maps.

09 Long span model making for technology 5 assignment, semester 1 This assignment was to extend and develop the construction and technological aspects of a studio project. The span structure had to be 100m long . The solution which I chose was a space frame structure. The physical model shows the relation between the envelope and the structure. This structure has good performance when tested for strong wind, earthquake, and lateral and gravity load.
