History of Delhi's India Gate 70,000 troops who gave their lives in World War I are honoured at India Gate. The tall building created by Sir Edwin Lutyens was constructed by the Imperial War Graves Commission (IWCG). The Duke of Connaught, Queen Victoria's third son, laid the building's cornerstone in 1921, and Viceroy Lord Irwin inaugurated it in 1931. Also present were officials from the British Indian Army, Chelmsford, the Viceroy, Imperial Service Troops, & Commander-in-Chief. Amar Jawan Jyoti, a new building, was later erected in 1972 to honour the troops who gave their lives in the Indo-Pak War of 1971.
