Plomer Road

Macleay Valley Council put the final approval through to seal Plomer Road from just beyond Crescent Head to Big Hill. A controversial piece of road has finally been decided upon with work commencing later in 2020. The local Indigenous people, The Dhunghutti, were concerned about their sites. After much debate and research none of the sites will be interfered with and in fact may be an opportunity to conduct site visits at the guidance of the Dhunghutti people. It will be now up to local residents to embrace this decision and create new ways to enjoy this area..

Roads of dirt and history ❖

Two roads that have always been synonymous with Crescent Head is The Plomer Rd and The Maria River Rd. Only about 5 kilometres apart and both running parallel to the ocean. The Maria River Rd is the one further inland and in general runs parallel with the Maria River.

The Plomer Rd because of its proximity to great surf and reasonably remote locations has dominated the famous stakes for many a year. It’s poorer cousin The Maria River Rd has just been considered a no go zone or an alternative route to Port Macquarie. The Maria River Rd was predominantly used during the boom times of dairy farming. The road gave access to dairy farms and the river where boats were used to transport the milk and cream to Port Macquarie. As time has moved on, the road is now becoming a major tourist and access route for locals. Plomer Rd was built to accommodate the rutile mining which was abundant in the 1970s. It created great employment for locals and also created the road. Built for access it was probably in better condition then rather than now. In search for undiscovered surf, it didn’t take long for the surfers to use this road to find their nirvana. The dream of those days, in some ways, still haunts some surfers with dreams of “what it used to be like”. But when you get over 3000 vehicle movements per day using the road during holiday times it becomes a nightmare. It has been loved to death.

We are now in 2020 and safety and expectations of the general population move on. Sealing of these roads will start by the end of this year.

Village care for surfing and Surfings care for our village.

A plan needs to be compiled to ensure the respect for our area is in front of mind for visiting surfers. We are in a highly sensitive Aboriginal area and that needs to be reflected within a whole plan. One of the most significant challenges is the transport of surfers within the village and within 20 Kim’s of the village. The environment is being loved to death.
