Crescent Head YAK ISSUE NUMBER 6

What’s going on ? As we are writing this many controversial issues are taking place in Crescent Head. The long process of the Masterplan has reached a very important stage with Council approving the final plan. The foreshore update has also been included with some minor adjustments to be determined. This month we bring a visual delight of travels and memories that may reside outside of Crescent Head. Plus some interesting topics to enjoy, including new businesses. Cheers Paul

Sustainable Living

Aiming for an enclosed off the grid village Is that impossible? • That feeling of freedom. You know the one where you can tell those who impose in

your life to bugger off. Well we believe Crescent Head (and surrounds) can be socially responsible and work towards self sufficiency.

• Solar is the obvious first step, with many houses and commercial sites like the tavern and the club being incredibly efficient by using solar. Of course solar to battery is the aim for longevity. Water from the roof, into your own tank for you to regulate and use, no bills, just water.

• No electricity costs, no water rates and a clean and lean environment.

• The best current example of energy efficiency and using natural resources is The

Crescent Head Country Club. Next time you visit, ask at the desk on the programs in place to reduce its footprint and that of the village.

For the love of Byron Bay

Or.....let’s do nothing and use that place as an excuse Isn’t it a pity that sometimes we use Byron Bay as a reason as to why things should remain as is in Crescent Head? Not all things are bad in Byron Bay, in fact, some things are really good. It is important not to lose sight of that. For example, both Crescent Head and Byron Bay are surfing Mecca’s and therefore have an eternally underlying attraction to the same type of people, surfers, wanna be surfers, and hangers. The physical things they do not have in common are geographical size, a dangerously close proximity to the Gold Coast and infrastructure needs. The recent changes in Crescent Head, or proposed changes, are nothing like the transformation of Byron Bay and it is impossible to reach its size and proximity to an on tap feed of Gold Cost tourists. The Plomer Road, had to happen, if not now certainly within the next 5 years. Expectations are far higher these days than nostalgia and uncomfortable travelling. The upgrade of the village including the foreshore are a true reflection of the world in which we live. A CBD that is dragged up from a 1960s grubby look to something acceptable to those who travel and enjoy the place want to do so in good surroundings. None of this changes Crescent Head and its incredible history.

YAK On your eyes

• YAK Sunglasses. Class from Crescent Head.

Accommodation please. Anecdotally it appears visitors are finding it a little diďŹƒcult in obtaining somewhere to stay in the village. The big change is it seems to be a year round phenomenon, not just a peak season rush. Not only is holiday accommodation in a short supply, so is permanent rentals. The new estate planned for Killuke Mountain may help to alleviate some of the problem.

Balinese fishing boat. Lombok straits.

Tiny House living

• Sustainable living, affordable and kind to the environment.

• Do we really need oversized

living? This would look ideal on a rural property. What do you think?

The unattractive sight of an unused car park While many see this as a cultural gathering sight, others see it as an eyesore of tarred emptiness.
