3D Model, Residency

Being born in İstanbul, and moving to London allowed for me to have two different cultural influences on my art, which is what gave me the idea to create a 3D model which combined the two houses I have memories in; one of them being the house I grew up in İstanbul and the other one being the house I live in London.

Construction Foam 3D Model

When I went to the British Art Fair at the Saatchi Gallery in October 2022, I was deeply intrigued by John Clarke’s geometrical sculpture. The strong contrasts between the deep-set reliefs and the high points reminded me of hills which gave me the idea to use the curves as a landscape and to design a building according to the highs and lows of the forms. First, I digitally mapped out the landscape on the curves of the sculpture, then I designed my building on top of the crevices. Throughout the design stage, I made sure that the geometrical shapes in the sculpture were a prominent element in my building as well.

I created the hill with construction foam, which is soft at first but dries solid. Once it dried I carved it into the shape I envisioned and painted it with green, brown and cream acrylic paint to make it seem as naturalistic as possible.

Library, 3D Model

I was intrigued by Don Erickson’s J. Mayes Residence, especially since it’s a great example of organic architecture. I was particularly interested in how the composition of the building was divided into three but still connected to one another. This lead me to design and create my own 3D model, separated into three parts. I envisioned the complex as a library since the separation of the composition would allow for a simple

Kindergarten, 3D Model

When I first moved to London, I was mesmerised by the brutalist interior of the Westminster Tube Station. Additionally, I felt as if Mark Firth’s ‘Nine Houses’ I saw at the British Art Fair connected perfectly with the tube station’s interior as they both inhold similar masculine forms. With the inspiration I gathered from the two, designed a building with a similar aesthetic. However, I designed the interior as a kindergarten, allowing me to create a striking contrast between the masculine exterior and the playful interior.

3D Model, Dance Studio

I was drawn towards ‘The Louis Vuitton Foundation’ by Frank Gehry as I believe it captures a sense of constant movement echoed throughout the design, which I wanted to take as inspiration in my dance studio model. I wanted the purpose the build served to be communicated across through the exterior design, which lead me to use metal netting as one of my main materials. I aimed to relate the sense of movement created by the metal netting, bending and twisting from its own weight, to the purpose of the building. Therefore, the exterior of the building reflected the occasions it inholds.

Art Gallery, 3D Model

I was intrigued by ‘Nervous Structure 5’ due to its immersive nature. I wanted to create a 3D model with a similar geometric aesthetic which was when I decided to divide the triangular sections and design them as separate buildings on their own. I envisioned the complex as an art gallery, where each of the triangles holds a different exhibition. The way that the triangles are set up, like a corridor, ensures that the visitors can find their way around the gallery very easily since one enters through a single entrance and the harmonious set-up of the triangles directly lead you to the exit.

3D Model, 3 Countries -20

Turkey in black ink England in pencil

Netherlands in watercolour

With my 3 Countries 3D model I wanted to combine all 3 cultures I am associated with into one to showcase the influential cultures in my life, which made this piece incredibly personalised to my upbringing. Turkey being my home-country, The Netherlands being my father’s side, and England being my “home” away from home. I believe all three of these countries play a big part in who I am today, which makes the model almost an embodiement of my character.

Nylon Sculpture

I was inspired by Rosa Verloop’s nylon dolls and I created an abstracted depiction of the human form with old pillow stuffings and cheap stockings. For me, this piece signifies emotional turmoil and the state of being emotionally “burnt out”.

Prints

One of the great artists that have influenced over my art style is Man Ray. I was influenced by his Rayographs and I created similar disorderly and abstracted linoprints.

The idea of finding the beauty in the everyday world has always been very appealing to me. Whilst walking down the street, the rust slowly embedding itself onto the wet concrete caught my eye. This gave me the idea to print with rust and I developed my own technique for doing so. I collected old pieces of rusted metal from a hardware shop, then wet handmade paper with salt water and printed with the rusty metal pieces I had.

Wrinkle Studies

I was particularly interested in how years of emotions leave their marks on our faces, which lead me to study wrinkles in depth.

As a continuation of my studies on wrinkles, I created this embroidered piece. First, I sewed together a thick, pillow-like base and embroidered my eye design onto it. The thick, soft base allowed the wrinkles to be more defined as the crevices created by the thread squished the stuffing together, causing it to bulge out.
