The findings indicateed a mere 11% of Brits have experienced the flow state in the past 3-12 months, despite 100% expressing their enjoyment of being in it. THE STORY OF THE ‘CHRISTINA O’

In 1954 Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis purchased a Canadian war weary frigate and transformed her into the most luxurious and world-famous private yacht, naming her after his daughter Christina ...

Famous for hosting the superyacht elite, the ‘Christina’ welcomed Hollywood stars, famous musicians, as well as heads of state, to name just a few. It is said that this legendary yacht is where John F Kennedy first met Winston Churchill and in Autumn 1963 where Jackie Kennedy first met Aristotle Onassis; she had been invited to spend time on the ‘Christina’ by her younger sister. The ‘CHRISTINA O‘ is perhaps the most written about yacht ever, and has witnessed some of the most iconic events of the last century.

Aristotle’s beloved Christina Onassis

Born in 1950 in New York City, the only daughter and sole heiress of Aristotle, Christina was supposed to live a sheltered and carefree life, but she was haunted by family scandal, the death of all her close relatives and four unsuccessful

marriages. In 1988, Christina Onassis, the golden heiress of the Onassis shipping fortune, died in Argentina at the age of just thirty-eight.

Christina spent her life as a rich girl, living a life of extreme wealth and luxury. She is said to have ordered a helicopter to fly from Austria to Switzerland to retrieve a music cassette she’d forgotten. Her marriage to French pharmaceutical heir Thierry Roussel produced Christina’s only child, Athina.

She had learned about business and finance in the New York offices of her father, beginning as a twenty-year-old secretary and later working at her father’s headquarters in Monaco. Following the tragic death of her brother Alexander and then her father a short while later in 1975, Christina gave up her American citizenship and became a dual

citizen of Greece and Argentina for the remainder of her life. She proved to have smart business acumen and gradually strengthened her hold over the Onassis Group, running the entire family empire. She donated the American portion of her holdings in her father’s company to the American Hospital of Paris with half of Aristotle’s estate used to establish the Alexander Onassis Foundation.

Onassis was considering starting a new life for herself and her daughter in Argentina, but sadly in 1988, Christina was found dead in a friend’s home , another chapter in the Greek tragedy of the Onassis family. She left Athina as her heir, to inherit an estate worth a reported $250 million and is buried alongside her beloved father and brother in the family cemetery on the island of Skorpios.

ABOUT THE MEGAYACHT ‘CHRISTINA O’

On the death of Aristotle Onassis in 1975 the ‘Christina’ became the property of the Greek Government but fell into disrepair until in 2001, Greek businessman and Onassis’ friend Pavlos Papanikolaou took responsibility and spent two years restoring her to her former glory. With her most recent refit completed in 2020 – this unique megayacht can now host 34 guests in 17 cabins and entertain more than 150 guests while at anchor. She is the perfect venue for family and friend celebrations and corporate entertainment.

Living in Opulence and Style

The exterior of Christina O stands out from other superyachts owing to her clipper bow, long line, dazzling white topsides, and vibrant yellow funnel, but her interiors are also uniquely amazing. Relax in the main deck’s Lapis Lounge named for its stunning lapis-lazuli framed fireplace, and you will find oak adorned walls, paintings by the grand masters and sumptuous settees. Or you may prefer to enjoy listening to the sound of Onassis’ famous lover Maria Callas as her operatic talent plays in the Callas Lounge. With three pianos on board including two Steinways you can enjoy music to your heart’s content and imagine what it must have been like to listen to Maria Callas or Frank Sinatra perform live. For family entertainment the Callas Lounge also proffers a cinema with state-of-the-art sound system.

Alternatively you can enjoy a drink from a whaleskin bar stool, at the rope-adorned Aris Bar where Onassis liked to socialise with his guests.

Along with the Aris Bar, the main deck is also home to a dining salon with a 24-seater table, and a stunning atrium houses a spiral staircase leading to the other salons and promenade deck above.

Accommodation on board comprises the oak panelled Onassis Master Suite with its crystal lit bedroom, marble bathroom, library and sitting room with original onyx fireplace. Guests are also well looked after in ten double staterooms on the main deck, while the lower deck can accommodate a further eight cabins.

Cuisine

At the heart of any luxury holiday or celebration is the haute cuisine. Christina O’s Head Chef can be counted on to produce star-rated cuisine, ably assisted by the Pastry Chef, the Sous Chef and Sommelier on board. The team can be relied on to offer exquisite international cuisine ranging from fresh sushi to sumptuous desserts.

Iconic as they are in the yachting world, they are ideal for dynamic sport sailing. While you may hear a yacht referred to as a boat, the truth is that not all boats are yachts. To be called a yacht, it has to be at least 35 feet long, while superyachts are more than 200 feet long. Known as a luxurious way of spending your boating holiday, yachts often have powerful motors that allow them to easily travel long distances. However, they may be traditional sailing yachts powered by the wind.

▶ Catamarans

Gaining popularity, especially among families with children, catamarans are more spacious and

stable due to their two hulls. They are easier to operate and faster than a sailboat, except when on an upwind course which is quite a difficult task to handle. Sailing with a catamaran is less tiring thanks to a lower heel angle, while there is a lower risk of seasickness. In addition, catamaran has a shallower draft in order to be able to access places that a sailboat can’t, and usually tends to be equipped with extra equipment, such as a barbecue. However, it is usually more expensive and not as nimble as a sailboat.

On this option, there is no need for you to know how to handle sails in order to enjoy your cruise. Motorboats can provide you a really fast cruise as they can whizz across the sea at a breakneck speed that a sailboat or catamaran just cannot compete with. They can be easier to handle and steered by less experienced sailors, while they are more comfortable than sailboats.

Our captains and crew navigate its waterways and inlets as easily as walking the halls of their own vessel—and are always on the lookout. Spot a bear foraging for salmon on the shore and the captain swings back around so you can get a better look. There’s nowhere better to be than right here.

DAY 1: SEATTLE, WASHINGTON –EMBARKATION

Ah, the Emerald City! Check-in at the hospitality center and later, board your ship and settle in. Depending on your vessel, depart from downtown Seattle, cruising along the city’s picturesque waterfront. Or from Fishermen’s Terminal and transit historic Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, where it’s a 20 foot drop into the Salish Sea. Adieu, Seattle.

DAY 2 SAN JUAN ISLANDS, WASHINGTON/ CANADA’S INSIDE PASSAGE

Each island in the San Juan archipelago is different. Orcas and harbor seals haven’t picked favorites. You could spot them in any passage. Give your arms a stretch. Kayak or paddle board along a tucked away cove. Sea stars dot rocky outcroppings orange and purple. Curious harbor seals watch your moves. Get in more mileage on a skiff ride to further inlets. There will be time to hike too. Look low and nose around pools for creatures left behind by the outgoing tide.

DAY 3: CANADA’S INSIDE PASSAGE

Mountains rise higher. Fjords get deeper. It’s a day of intricate waterways and cruising for critters, keeping watch for black bears on shore, including the elusive spirit bear. Civilization slips away as you enter remote waters leading north through British Columbia. Surf-happy dolphins and porpoise like to catch a ride on the bow wave. Your captain and crew are on the lookout and give the call of a sighting. And a waterfall and old abandoned cannery come into view. That’s Butedale. Slow down and take it all in as forested fjords roll by. Aiming to entertain and educate over the next days, your expedition team is at the ready. Natural history, Native influences, and their favorite trivia games, too.

DAY 4: CANADA’S INSIDE PASSAGE

Take your cup of joe to the bow. The world wakes up with you. Bald eagles watch the ship along its course from tree tops. Islands to the west, inletetched mainland to the east. Your captain and mates navigate twisting passages. Harbor seals spend their days on rocky islets. Breathe in the fresh air and take in miles of forested wilderness. In the lounge, your bartender mixes up the daily special. Take the challenge and play a few friendly hands of cards with your shipmate.

DAY 5: KETCHIKAN / MISTY FJORDS NATIONAL MONUMENT

In Ketchikan, connect with the Tlingit Culture. Tribal leader and local legend Joe Williams, known as Ka Xesh X’e in his native language, guides you on a walking tour. With a rich oral tradition, the Tlingit passed stories from generation to generation— and Joe’s storytelling is captivating! Amble through the surrounding forest on a moderate to easy trail or challenge yourself to a hard-charger hike along trails and boardwalks past, cedar, spruce, streams, and waterfalls. Next up, Misty Fjords is the largest Wilderness Area in the Tongass National Forest and a haven for wildlife—grizzly and black bears, salmon, and deer. Calm settles over these parts and all you can hear is nature. Deep glacial fjords filled with seawater. Wetlands, estuaries, dense forests, and sweeping granite cliffs. Paddle through a bay, silty from the outwash of a mountain river.

DAY 6: CAPTAINS’ CHOICE

Just what you need, morning stretches on deck with your guide. Warm those hard-at-play muscles. You know firsthand— conditions in Southeast change one inlet to the next. Your captain is at the helm and your expedition team picks just the right spot. Wherever you head, the adventures are as big as the water is deep! So many hidden pockets in the Tongass National Forest. Give your paddle board skills a glide. Watch for big-eyed harbor

seals from a kayak. Bushwhack into the forest of giants. Your guides know the area’s history and keep it lively.

DAY 7: LECONTE BAY / IDEAL COVE

If it’s high tide, a skiff ride brings you up-close to LeConte Glacier’s iceberg gardens. Sculpted by the warm summer air, these glacial works of art are a testament to the mastery of Mother Nature. If tides are low, take a boot-sucking walk to check out icebergs resting on the mudflats. Surrounded by national forest, Ideal Cove’s boardwalk trails wind through habitat known as “muskegs,” boggy meadows of ferns and grasses. Or test your balance paddle boarding in this quiet cove. It’s just you and the vast wilderness.

DAY 8: FREDERICK SOUND / CHATHAM STRAIT

Humpbacks beeline it to this region each season to feed on zooplankton and herring. Watch for whales feasting in these abundant glacial waters. Hang out and enjoy the show. Based on wind and weather, your expedition team has the lineup of adventures all mapped out. Cruise past Five Fingers Lighthouse, Alaska’s oldest light station and The Brothers Islands, where sea lions nap on rocky nobs. From kayak or skiff, scope the intertidal zones of un-named bays and coves. Eagles fish here too, their white noggins give away their perches. Kayak into a seascape of wild,

forested islets, or take the pace down a notch with an easy stroll amidst the tide pools. It’s remote, and remarkable.

DAY 9 SITKA / PERIL STRAIT

Alaska’s wild natural history surrounds the historic community of Sitka. It’s a quick ride to Fortress of the Bear. Tour this home for orphaned bears and observe their unique personalities. With access to the Tongass National Forest all around you, take the hint and take a hike—your guides know the way into the mountains to a clear lake and along boardwalk trails through a temperate rainforest to a waterfall. Later, set sail into Peril Strait and join your expedition guides who share the tragic tales of how this passage earned its foreboding name.

DAY 10: CHICHAGOF ISLAND

Remote passages offer more opportunities for you to search for the mighty humpback whale. Keep your binoculars at hand and watch for the misty spout of these gentle giants as they feed in the waters around you. Anchor in a remote Chichagof Island inlet. Backpacks loaded and adventure toys lowered (skiffs, paddle boards, kayaks), it’s time to go play. Stick to the water in a kayak excursion, and don’t forget to look above and below the surface. A nosy seal could be watching your every stroke. Beachcomb rocky shores. Tonight, take a nightcap to the sun deck and watch the sky.

DAY 11: GLACIER BAY NATIONAL PARK

There’s a cool factor, and it’s not just coming off the face of the glaciers! This 3.3 million-acre park was covered by ice as recently as 1795. Since then, the park’s receding glacier activity has made it easier to access those inner reaches. Glacial history, retreats, advances, moraines. They come with expert insight from a park ranger and your onboard naturalists, so bring on the questions. Pigeon guillemots, puffins, common murres, and cormorants colonize and nest at South Marble Island. One good whiff and a few loud barks give away one of its mammalian residents—Steller’s sea lions. It’s a full day in the bay exploring Muir’s legacy—all the way to Grand Pacific and Margerie Glaciers. Celebrate with a toast to nature’s handiwork. (BLD)

DAY 12: ICY STRAIT

Bull whip kelp threads through nearby channels like deep, twisted mangroves. And you know better, but orange and purple starfish and jellyfish make it hard to believe you’re not in the tropics. Follow the currents out to where the sea lions flock to remote rock formations. Your captain is on

the bridge, the expedition team on deck, and all eyes are on the water and the shore. Everyone is on-watch for the telltale blow of humpbacks. Come closer to the shoreline by skiff, kayak, or on foot. Sometimes the smallest things are the biggest wonders. Take in the evening solitude from the bow, or the hot tub. Or both— why choose just one? Tonight, join your captain for the Farewell Dinner. As a special treat, your expedition team shares a slideshow of your journey.

DAY 13 JUNEAU, ALASKA – DISEMBARKATION

Disembark after breakfast. Transfer to the Juneau airport or begin your UnCruise overnight stay or extended land tour.

11 February to 02 March 2024

Panama City – Las Perlas – Santa Cruz

Join the crew in Panama City. You will be making final preparations for the passages that you have ahead. Before that, you will sail one day to Las Perlas Islands, an archipelago formed when North and South America were separated some 3 million years ago. As a result of its white sandy beaches, snorkeling, and sheer beauty, this location is favored by the rich and famous.

You will meet with other yachts taking part in this expedition on January 13, then make the 850NM (6-8 days) trip to the Galapagos on the following day. The journey will take you across the Equator, where you must pay homage to King Neptune. Once you arrive in San Cristobel, you must undergo a strict clearing process. The amount and diversity of wildlife is incredible! From the giant tortoise to the blue footed booby, inquisitive seals to black tipped shark. The area has it all.

In order to protect the fragile ecosystem, yachts are not permitted to cruise freely so you will be based in the three main harbours of Cristobel, Isabella and Santa Cruz.

The best way to experience all that Galapagos has to offer is to take one of the many organised tours led by local guides. The adventure ends in Santa Cruz on the 2nd of March.

Leg 3 – Galapagos to Marquesas

04 to 30 March 2024

Santa Cruz – Marqueses archipelago – Nuka Hiva

Come along with the crew to Santa Cruz, Galapagos. You will be preparing for the amazing journey that lies ahead. You will leave the island of Galapagos behind two days later and cross the Pacific Ocean 2980 miles away. By the end of your first full day, you will have gotten accustomed to the steady SE trade winds and gentle equatorial current. The passage is expected to take 15-18 days. Watches will be running smoothly, galley duties will be assigned, and the music playlist will be agreed upon.

Your fishing line will be deployed, and your sea legs will be established. After the first full day, you may not be able to see your fleet on the horizon, but you will still be able to hear them on VHF. By the end of the first week, this is unlikely. You will land on the majestic and historical island of Hiva Ou. It is known for its untamed landscape, giant stone tiki, and Paul Gauguin’s final resting place.

As you cruise your way up through the island chain to Nuka Hiva, the largest of them all, you will be stepping foot on some of the most remote islands in the world. This island is served by direct flights from Tahiti making it a convenient place to say farewell.

Leg 4 – Marquesas to Tahiti

01 to 27 April 2024

Nuka Hiva – Tuamotus archipelago – Papeete

Direct flights from Tahiti make this an accessible joining point. You will be finalizing preparations for your journey. Two days later, you leave one of the most remote areas on earth and head west.

After a three-day crossing, you will arrive at Tuamotus, a small French Polynesian island, where you will explore for 17-20 days. Over an area, roughly the size of western Europe, the cluster of just under 80 islands and atolls is the world’s largest chain of atolls. White sandy beaches surrounded by coconut trees and clear crystal waters have an abundance of underwater life.

Pearl farms produce jewels that are unmatched in colour and shade. You will finally set sail for the final 220NM trip to Papeete, Tahiti, where you will say your final goodbyes. With the international airport only ten minutes by taxi your travel will be easy to co ordinate.

Leg 5 – Tahiti to Tonga

05 May to 09 June 2024

Papeete – Society Islands – Borra Borra – Cook islands – Nuie – Vava’u

Join in Papeete, a 10 minute taxi ride from the international airport, as you complete your final preparations to set sail. You will make the 160NM passage stopping to explore the Society Islands, possibly named by the explorer James Cook in honour of his sponsor the Royal Society in 1796. Although these tropical islands are home to a wide variety of rare animals and plants, their most famous feature is their strong fragrance from the gardenia flower – the most fragrant flower in the world, and one that has been protected for centuries.

Corals cover the atolls surrounding the islands, which are home to a variety of marine life species. The Society Islands are a snorkelers paradise. Upon arrival at Bora Bora, you meet up with other World Arc yachts and have the opportunity to experience all the island has to offer, including hiking, quad biking, sitting on black sandy beaches, or visiting a turtle sanctuary. After sailing 690 NM (4-6 days) to Suwarrow in the Cook Islands, you will have a short 24-72 hour stopover to explore the island.

Then onward to Nuie, one of the worlds largest raised coral atolls where once again you are afforded a 24hr to 72hr stopover. This island does not boast long sandy beaches but rather dramatic limestone cliffs. Explore the impressive caves, chasms and coral formations around the island before you complete your final 2 day sail to VaVa’u, Tonga. There are many flight options when leaving VaVa’u depending upon your final destination.

Leg 6 – Tonga to Fiji

11 June – 02 July 2024

Vava’u – Port Denerau

Join the crew in Vava’u, before heading off for three weeks of idyllic island hopping. The airport

is served by numerous flights depending upon your approach. With both Tonga and Fiji to explore and only a three day passage between them, this is one trip you’ll never forget. 61 islands make up this azure tropical paradise, covered in coral gardens, deserted beaches, and sparkling clear lagoons. Visit the local market, hire a car, or visit the botanical gardens.

The 580NM passage from Tonga to Fiji offers a pleasant one with the trade winds behind. Once in Fiji, you are welcomed with another idyllic paradise blessed with 333 tropical islands and some of the friendliest people on earth. In a utopia that many people consider a ‘must visit’, there’s bound to be a lot to see and do – stroll through the many markets, visit a temple, experience Cloud 9, Fiji’s floating bar, climb the small hill with incredible views on the island where Castaway was filmed, or just visit a local village. A 20-minute drive from Nadi International Airport will take you to Port Denerau where you will say your goodbyes.

Leg 7 – Fiji to Australia

11 July to 10 August 2024

Denerau – Vanuatu – Mackay –Whitsunday Islands – Airlie Beach

Fly in to Nadi International Airport and join us in Denerau Marina – a 20 minute taxi ride away. After picking you up, you will be transported to Muskat Cove, a secluded and uncrowded hideaway that embodies the essence of Fiji. As you sail toward Vanuatu, you stop to visit Mamanucas and Yasawa, two volcanic islands off the coast of Nadi. You will be awed by the crystal clear waters,

palm fringed beaches and live coral reefs that make this area one of the most beautiful in Fiji. From Yasawa, you make the 450-NM (2-4 day) downwind passage to Vanuatu.

In addition to being the world’s largest carbonnegative country, Vanuatu intends to phase out all fossil fuels by 2030. Your first port of call will be Aneiytum. After making your way north, you’ll cruise the island chain. A volcano on Tanna has an active volcano with lava dancing across the sky like fireworks. Visit Millennium Cave and hope waterfall. Snorkel over Million Dollar Point, where tanks, cars, and guns were simply dumped at the end of WWII. Your journey through Vanuatu ends at Port Vila where you meet up with World Arc yachts as you gather and set sail for the 1050NM downwind passage to Australia (6-8 days).

You make your approach through The Great Barrier Reef before taking a rest at Mackay. After a few days, you cruise through the Whitsunday Islands, which boast blue waters, coral seas, and coastal views fit for a postcard. Your journey ends in the laid back tropical resort town of Airlie Beach Australia. With Prosperine Airport only 12 miles out of town there is easy access from all of Australia’s major cities.

Leg 8 – Australia to Indonesia

14 August – 18 September 2024

Airlie Beach – Great Barrier Reef – Darwin –Lombok

In this tour, you set off from Airlie Beach, Australia to explore the Great Barrier Reef – perhaps the world’s most magnificent natural wonder. After

leaving Airlie Beach, you visit the Whitsundays, a jewel of 74 islands with bottle green forests that are home to an unparalleled abundance of marine life. The island of Hamilton Island has coral reefs that fringe its coast and tours are available for a close look at koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, and kookaburras. In the east, Passage Peak offers views of the surrounding islands.

The islands to your east will shield you from the Pacific swell as you head north. Aside from walking along the pristine beaches and snorkeling over vibrant coral reefs, you will anchor in secluded coves. As you watch the lemon sharks and giant grouper swim about the yacht, you will see giant clams below. You may spend a day or two in Cairns to see the Daintree rainforest, 60 million years older than the Amazon rainforest. Further up the coast, You might stop at Lizard Island, a sacred site for the Dingaal indigenous people.

After traveling over 1400 NM, you will arrive in Darwin where you will explore the area and meet up with other World Arc travelers. Known for its outdoor tropical lifestyle, this capital is thriving. The World Arc yachts gather and set out for the final 920NM leg (5-7 days) to Lombok, where you say farewell. With waterfront dining, crocodile adventures, and a rich history, there is something for everyone.

Leg 9 – Indonesia to Mauritius

20 September to 25 October 2024

Lombok – Christmas Island – Cocos (Keeling) –Port Louis

Join the crew on the beautiful island of Lombok. This island is home to sugar white beaches, spectacular falls, and Indonesia’s second-tallest volcano. You leave all that behind as you set sail for Christmas Island (625NM). There are red crabs, sea birds, whale sharks, and spectacular coral reefs on the island, which is known as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean. In three to four days, you reach the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The islands are almost perfectly circling each other, but only two of them are inhabited. Then you gather with other yachts for the crossing of the Indian Ocean. Settle in for the 2350NM journey.

Swim over coral reefs, learn about the Malay people, or simply relax on the beach. Estimations for crossing are somewhere between 12 and 18 days but the unknown is what makes an adventure an adventure. By the end of your first full day you will have found your rhythm. Watches will be running smoothly, galley duties allocated and the music playlist agreed upon! You will have deployed the fishing line and have found your sea legs. When you reach Port Louis, you will feel really accomplished. Not many people can say they have sailed across the Indian Ocean. With the airport only a 33 minute taxi ride away then things couldn’t be easier.

10 – Mauritius to South Africa

27 October – 30 November 2024

Port Louis – Reunion Island – Richards Bay –Cape Town

Join the crew in Port Louis, just a 33 minute taxi ride from the international airport, as you prepare to set sail. Your first stop is the island of Reunion. You will spend about six days exploring this small piece of Europe set in the Indian Ocean. You prepare the food to be interesting and exotic because of the melting pot of cultures and nationalities absorbed into the cuisine. There have been 150 recorded eruptions of the volcano on Reunion since the 17th century – the most recent occurred in April 2021. You’re welcome to climb it! The island offers hiking opportunities, as well as idyllic beaches. Your voyage from Reunion to Richards Bay is 1370NM (8-11 days). Hopefully, you will be able to get together with your fellow World Arc friends and explore the KwaZulu-Natal National Park. From Richards Bay, you will hop around the coast, stopping at Knysna Quays.

Due to its sandstone cliffs, which separate it from the pounding surf of the Indian Ocean, this gem of South Africa stands out with its streets lined with cafes, galleries, independent shops, and seafood restaurants.

You can explore the Featherbed Nature Reserve and take guided hikes through Knysna forest, or travel along the famous Garden Route and Elephant park. Onward to your final destination of Cape Town where you will say your farewells.

Leg 11 – South Africa to Brazil

09 January to 15 February 2025

Cape Town – Namibia – St Helena –Salvador da Bahia

Join the crew in Cape Town as you prepare to make the 785 NM (4-6 day) passage north to Namibia. A brief 3 – 4 days for recharge and exploration then west to St Helena. This tiny island lies 1215 NM west of the Atlantic Ocean is your next destination.

In addition to being the island of Napoleon’s exile, this island is also home to Jonathan, the oldest living animal on earth. This giant tortoise celebrated his 190th birthday in 2022. With its ancient wrecks, giant stairways, grand forts, natural wonders, and extraordinary walks, you will spend several days on this far-flung island. After being refreshed, you continue west for a passage of 1900NM (11-15 days) to Salvador, Brazil. This is an ideal place for farewell since there are direct flights from Europe (London 1 stop).

Leg 12 – Brazil to Grenada

19 February to 27 March 2025

After arriving at El Salvador International Airport, join the marina and prepare to cruise the Brazilian coast. As you hop your way north through Carnival week, you will be sure to be wowed by the multicoloured parades and pageants, with lots of dancing and singing to be heard. As you finish your Brazil adventure in Cabadelo, you meet your other World Arc adventurers and embark on the 1330NM (6-9 day) passage to Devils Island with your other World Arc adventurers.

Although it looks like a paradise with palm trees and sparkling waters, its beauty belies its horrifying truth. Tens of thousands of inmates died in this prison between 1852 and 1953 from malnutrition, disease, and futile escape attempts. It was the most feared prison in modern history. The horrific tales are left behind as you cruise through the Caribbean to Grenada. A 4 to 6 day passage. You bid your farewells at St George’s.

St George’s – Grenadines and St Vincent –Rodney Bay

Begin your trip in St. George’s, Grenada’s capital, and spend the next two days preparing for your journey. The island of St. Lucia is a sailing wonder

known for its volcanic scenery and perfect diving conditions. Anchor off in the north end of Rodney Bay marina, St. Lucia, where you will end your trip and have a prize giving for the whole of the World Arc Trip. Unwind and join one of the street parties that happen every Friday, where the roads are closed off in Gros Islet town, the party takes over, and the tastes and sounds of the Caribbean escape.

Grenada is a chain of islands, rich with history and wonderful things to do. Spend the day at Grand Anse Beach in St. George Paris paired with some underwater diving, or go on a spice tour at Dougaldston Spice Estate and discover Grenada’s rich history with spices.

Sail to the Grenadines and the archipelago of the Tobago Cays and stop off to explore their beauty. Very few islands are inhabited, but the ones offer amazing scenery. In the southern Grenadines sit the Tobago Cays, five beautiful, uninhabited islands surrounding a clear lagoon just waiting for you to snorkel and swim in. Catch sight of some local turtles and amazing coral, or visit one of the beaches or cays the area is famous for.

St. Vincent is a volcanic island made up of submerged volcanic mountains. Explore the island on foot through one of the forest trails and see some of the native flora and fauna. On the island sits the 1,234-metre active volcano of La Soufrière, which has impacted the island’s history.

When sailing the west coast of St. Vincent, you will pass by the Pitons and Marigot Bay. The Pitons are two dormant mountainous volcanic peaks in St. Lucia, made up of Gros Piton and Petit Piton, taken in the World Heritage Site. Pass through Marigot Bay in St. Lucia, an idyllic bay famous for being a backdrop to a few Hollywood movies.

At the end of your trip, sail up to the north end of Rodney Bay for the World Arc prize-giving to celebrate the end of the adventure.

IONIAN FLOTILLA IN GREECE

Lighter winds and shorter passages make the Ionian ideal for a relaxed flotilla sailing holiday in Greece, popular with families and less experienced crews.

Explore these beautiful Greek islands and experience gentle afternoon breezes, warm seas and friendly harbour-front tavernas. This flotilla is ideal for couples and families with children seeking a relaxed sailing holiday.

The sheltered waters of the Ionian offer an unlimited number of tranquil bays and enchanting fishing harbours. Navigation is straightforward with no tides, currents or other hazards. There are good sailing breezes late morning through the afternoon, but winds rarely exceed Force 5. Anchor in picturesque bays or moor up in bustling fishing harbours.

We don’t believe in ‘regimented’ flotilla sailing. You’re free to plot your own course during the day. The flotilla skipper is on hand to give you advice and support - from sorting out a snarled anchor to reserving you a table for dinner on the quayside.

Less experienced skippers will appreciate his help with mooring “stern-to” or “bows-to” on the quayside at the end of an enjoyable afternoon’s sail. And if you are an experienced sailor you can choose to leave the flotilla for a few days, joining up for the barbecue evening or other social event.

Antarctica, the elusive 7th continent, remained hidden from humanity until just 200 years ago and has since captivated the attention of explorers, adventurers, researchers, storytellers, and perhaps now, you.

It’s only been since the 60s that members of the general public were able to travel to the very south of our planet, and since then, every year has seen more and more people hungry to visit this notably unique landscape.

For most, Antarctica is a dream – a once in a lifetime adventure – which is why it’s so important to choose the right trip, the best experience for you, so that you can get the most of your time in the most spectacular and otherworldly place that earth has to offer.

CRUISING ANTARCTICA10 TOP TIPS

1. UNDERSTAND WHICH EXPERIENCE SUITS YOU

Travel to Antarctica is largely governed by an organization called IAATO. They’ve made steadfast rules governing exactly how expedition ships are able to travel in Antarctic waters, to protect the land, sea, and those that live there. The rule of thumb is as follows:

Ships with over 500 passengers: Cannot make any landings, only sail through the waters. This experience is perfect for those who perhaps don’t feel up to stepping on land, and for those that are more interested in the scenery than the wildlife on shore.

Ships with between 200 & 500 passengers: Can make landings at some sites.

Ships with under 200 passengers: Can make landings most frequently.

If you’re looking to step foot on the continent and her islands as often as possible, aim for a smaller ship. This experience is perfect if you want to make the most of your time, visiting land as often as possible, and getting more up close and personal with the wildlife – specifically, penguins!

2. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

A cruise to Antarctica is unlike the leisure cruises that sail anywhere else in the world. Usually, you can expect a set itinerary telling you where you will be and at what time you will arrive there, with a little room for change worked in there for good measure. In Antarctica, this simply isn’t possible.

The weather is unpredictable and with each season the landscapes can change; sometimes in slight ways, sometimes dramatically. The captain and expedition leader will do everything in their power to show you as many landing sites as possible, but don’t go down to Antarctica anticipating to see a very specific place.

Schedule changes are common, but for everything that changes you’ll be shown something else incredible just around the corner.

3. WILDLIFE!

You might look at the barren white glaciers and snow crusted mountains and think that Antarctica is void of life, but you’d be wrong. The continent hosts an abundance of fauna and even flora, if you know where to look! The Antarctic Sea is home to a slowly rising population of whales (after the catastrophic decrease at the hands of the whaling

industry in the 20th century), an abundance of seals, a cacophony of penguins, thousands of other seabirds, and an estimated over 700 trillion Krill!

Everywhere you go there are the signs and sounds of life. Whether from the thousands of Gentoo and Adelie penguins in Petermann Island (and many other colonies around the peninsula!) or the huffing of Humpbacks surfacing to take their breaths in the otherwise silent Crystal Sound, I can personally attest that it’s all around you, wherever you are.

4. SOAK IN THE KNOWLEDGE

You don’t have to be an expert in the polar regions to enjoy a trip to Antarctica.

Travelling with Quark is synonymous with living inside a nature documentary. Landings and continent aside, the one part of the whole experience that impresses is just how cleverly the expedition team utilize time so you can learn as much as possible. Before coming to Antarctica, I could never distinguish between the different types of penguins and other sea birds, I couldn’t tell whales apart, nor the various seals living here. During our time onboard crossing the Drake, we explored landscapes, glaciers, katabatic winds

and icebergs. We discovered the history of polar exploration. We learned so much about the flora and fauna of Antarctica that by the time we’d reached the continent, we were all pointing to the Storm Petrels, Humpbacks, Leopard seals, Adelie’s, and so much more, calling them by name as if we were now the experts. The expedition team are what sets Quark aside from any others. They are the only company with their own dedicated training programme that attracts the best of the best, and I’ve never met a group of people quite so passionate about what they do. They immerse themselves in your experience and utterly made our trip what it was.

5. BE BRAVE…!

One of the best parts of my trip to Antarctica was how it gives you opportunity to step outside your comfort zone. Some of you might know what I refer to when I talk about the Polar Plunge!

One of my deepest fears is the ocean. Funny, I know, when I’m such an avid cruiser. It’s not mandatory by any count, but if any of you are like me and find the fear of missing out to be far greater than your own instincts, it’s an experience that cannot be missed! Tethered by a harness around your waist, you jump from the ship platform

into the crisp, salty sea, as the ships photographer captures your leap of faith! Between jumping in and climbing back out for your warm robe and the beckoning sauna, you’re only in the water for a matter of seconds. The water genuinely wasn’t as cold as I thought it would be (probably due to adrenaline!), there’s a team of staff in zodiacs and on ship there with you, and it’s without a doubt one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life.

6. WHERE TO GO?

While no itinerary is set in stone, there are a number of enticing directions to travel that promise different experiences and with that, there are different itineraries to choose from. There are itineraries that visit the Antarctic Peninsula, some that go as far south as the Antarctic Circle, some that visit South Georgia and the Falklands, and even some incredibly exclusive sailings that visit little known and lesser seen areas of Antarctica such as Snow Hill – home to 10,000 Emperor Penguins. As I write this, there are just two cruises EVER scheduled for November 2023, this is in one of the top three most exclusive wildlife encounters in the world. The most important thing to decide is what is most important for you to see and we’ll suggest what will suit you best.

7. WHEN TO GO?

Travel to Antarctica is only possible during the Southern Hemisphere’s summer months –our winter. The season usually runs between November and March. There isn’t particularly a best month to go within that, but different seasons do offer different experiences. For Whales, February and March are best as they’re at their peak numbers. In December and January you will experience the longest days and milder temperatures. November, being at the beginning of the season is cooler as the summer just starts to warm up, but with that you have incredible giant ice floes, bergs, and sculptures. It’s certainly the most scenically dazzling, while still offering an abundance of wildlife!

8. GETTING THERE

Cruises to Antarctica leave from a number of southerly points in the world. New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa to name a few, but these require many days of sea crossing which limits your time on the continent. By far the best way to get to Antarctica is via South America –Ushuaia, Argentina. Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, although in reality it’s smaller than many cities we may know, and reminds me of Canadian Skiing towns, or the mountain towns further north of Patagonia.

From the UK the easiest route to Ushuaia is to fly via Buenos Aires. I visited Buenos Aires on a separate trip and would highly recommend some time in this vibrant and varied city both before and after your cruise. Not only to coincide with your flights and break up the travelling, but because it would add another layer of depth to your trip, a warm and colourful contrast to the cold white expanse you’ll experience further south.

9. CROSSING THE DRAKE

The Drake Passage. It’s an infamous body of water stretching from the southern tip of South America to the Antarctic Peninsula. With my own fear of the ocean and susceptibility to sea sickness I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous for the two and a half day crossing each way. The Drake Passage experience really is different for everyone and on every cruise but all I can say from mine is that it truly wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. One thing to remember when watching the videos online is people don’t post videos when the crossing is calm, it wouldn’t get nearly as many views! The ship is fitted with some excellent stabilizers, and there is a doctor onboard with an array of seasickness medication you can take as and when you need it. It took me a day to get my sea legs but I was shocked at the fact that I wasn’t actually unwell during the whole voyage, and pretty much everyone was out and

about experiencing the activities on the ship both directions. Our crossing was so calm on the way back that we actually arrived back into Ushuaia half a day early, meaning we hit land and sailed through the Beagle Channel during the daylight. This gave us incredible views of Hourglass and Dusky Dolphins, Sei and Humpback Whales, Magellan Penguins, and even some distant Orca when it would usually be too dark to see them! My biggest recommendation is to be overprepared. While we were lucky with the Drake, I know I wouldn’t have managed it without the motionsickness wristbands, sickness patches that went behind both ears, or the seasickness tablets from the ships doctor.

10. DRESS FOR SUCCESS!

One of the things I’ve been asked most since my trip is what clothing you need to bring with you. The most important items of clothing you need are waterproof trousers and thermals. A lovely touch from my trip with Quark was that we were given a top of the range multi-layered parka to use onboard and onshore, and take home with us afterwards! So, you don’t need to bring a ski jacket, just layers and then of course whatever coat you wish to use prior to boarding. You’re also given boots to use onshore, but these remain in the mudroom.

I only brought one pair of shoes with me for the whole trip, a pair of trainers that I used onboard. I only changed into my thick socks and wore the provided boots for zodiac cruises and going onshore.

If you have ever been skiing, it’s a similar dress code for time off ship. Salopettes also work just fine as waterproof trousers! A good tip for anyone who doesn’t already own waterproofs and doesn’t plan on needing them afterwards, Ushuaia is

chock-full of stores that you can buy or rent your equipment from to save bringing it all the way with you.

An Antarctic voyage isn’t a formal affair –comfort and warmth come before anything else. From all the cruises I’ve taken before it’s always been lovely to get dressed up for dinner and put a nice dress and heels on, but in this instance, it was actually a refreshing change to not have to worry about any of that. Most days I wore jeans and a jumper, even at dinner. I packed light but warm, but all those I spoke too who had brought a lot more admitted that they’d hardly touched most of it.

IN SUMMARY…

Picture being onboard a ship with around 150 other people. All casual, like-minded and adventurous individuals ranging from the ages of 14 to 83! By the time we reached Antarctica and crossed the circle it already felt like a large family. By the last night before disembarkation, myself, the guests, the crew and the expedition team were all dancing, singing, chatting and laughing together, and I’m not ashamed to say how emotional it felt as we all went our separate ways.

Travelling to Antarctica is a privilege. The indescribable feeling of visiting the most volatile, the most ethereal, and the most remote place on the planet unites those who get the opportunity. There is a place in my heart where I will treasure my time in Antarctica for the rest of my life, and I would urge anyone who has the opportunity to go. To experience what I hope I’ve been able to convey a glimpse of.

If you have no experience or are trying to gain more knowledge, choose to rent a sailboat with a skipper. A captain will take care of the manoeuvring and he will be sure to explain the area of navigation. It is surely the best solution to navigate with peace of mind or to try to improve your sailing

skills. This is a perfect option for beginners or if you just want to fully relax and have somebody captain the sailing charter.

To celebrate its 2nd birthday, Lost Years Rum launched its debut range of spiced rums. It’s new Wandering Turtle collection consists of an unusual silver spiced rum made with single origin rum from Antigua, which is then flavoured with coconuts, blood orange, mandarins, limes, vanilla and exotic spices. The second flavour combines golden rums from Jamaica, Venezuela, and Nicaragua with a unique blend of pineapples and tropical spices.

The brand itself is named after the once mysterious early years of a sea turtle’s life. No one knew where they disappeared to during this time in their lifecycle. Researchers, however, have been able to better piece together some of their movements from observation in recent years.

‘It’s wonderful that this brand – the idea for which was hatched on our last family holiday in Jamaica in 2019 – is already making such a difference,’ said Lee Smith, Lost Years founder. ‘The entire reason we started Lost Years Rum was

to help as many of these gorgeous little creatures begin their own journey into the lost years.’

Our Points System

Each owner receives 84 points per year. There are NO blackout dates for owner use. Charters “cost” 2 points per day during the high season and 1 point per day during the low season. 42 points can be used to reserve sailing time in advance. 42 points can be used on short notice.

This allows 4 to 6 weeks owner sailing time each year plus additional short notice weeks. If the owner chooses to use their yacht during low season only they could have up to 12 weeks of sailing time in worldwide destinations!
