Only a person who owns a captain’s licence can charter a boat. This person is called a skipper. The skipper is so much more than a person who drives the boat and has command of it. He takes care of the safety of the boat and the whole crew, as well as lots of other duties on board. You can either be a skipper yourself, hire one or be a crew member.

Having your own captain’s licence means that you are able to charter sailboats and motorboats anywhere in the world.

* Hire a skipper

Having someone else in charge of taking care of the vessel and crew will make time for you to find peace, read a book, watch the sunset from your deck, spend some quality time with your family and friends. While hiring a skipper has a lot of advantages, one you will appreciate the most is probably the local expertise. Instead of exploring via your smartphone where to dine and have a drink, which beaches and bays to explore, just ask your skipper.

The one thing necessary is to do as the captain says at all times.

WHERE TO GO FOR YOUR FIRST SAIL?

A little research before sailing never hurts, as it will help you discover what each destination has to offer outside of sailing. While different waters hide different pitfalls for an inexperienced sailor, all seas have their own beauty. Crew gratuities are usual but at your discretion.

The Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily and the Italian Riviera to the north offer alternative itineraries, each with their own unique charms. Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean and can easily be mistaken for the Caribbean thanks to its aqua-marine seas and powder white sand. Costa Smeralda is where you’ll find the A-listers while the far south is best for history buffs with its ancient monuments, medieval castles and Roman ruins.

The volcanic island of Sicily is relatively small in comparison but is recognisable on any map as the ‘ball’ at the end of Italy’s ‘boot’ and is dominated by Mount Etna. There must be something in the volcanic earth as Sicily is well known for its citrus and mulberry trees which flavour the traditional Sicilian mulberry granita – a semi-frozen mixture of water, sugar and local grown fruit. Greece consistently draws visitors thanks to its breathtaking natural beauty and sees them return year after year to bask in the warm welcome and rich history. Opinions differ about the exact number of islands in the extensive Greek archipelagos, but there are four main groups and as the American novelist Henry Miller once wrote, “it takes a lifetime to discover Greece, but it only takes an instant to fall in love with her.”

HOW DO I CHARTER A YACHT?

There are a few key steps you need to follow when thinking about booking a luxury yacht charter:

► Think about where you want to go. Take a look at our charter destinations for some inspiration

► Narrow down your requirements. What is your budget? How many people do you want to invite? Do you want adventure, romance or both?

► Get an idea of the type of yachts you like

► Let the charter broker find you the most suitable superyachts, and pick your favourite

► Start planning: the broker will arrange your itinerary and any other details.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO CHARTER A YACHT?

You’ll usually see two rates for charter yachts: the high season and low season rate. But that’s not all that you need to budget for. You need to factor in:

► The running costs of the charter, which usually ends up being 30-40% of the charter depending on your group and itinerary. It’s called the Advanced Provisioning Allowance, and we explain this in more detail below

► VAT or local cruising taxes, from 0 to 22%

► Delivery costs and/or redelivery cost, if you want to charter the vessel away from his home port area or far from current bookings in place. This doesn’t always apply, so check with your broker.

► A security deposit. This is mainly requested if an event is part of your charter, but depending on the make-up of the group, some owners will require this on the contract.

► A crew tip is offered at your discretion but in planning the overall cost, this is something to consider.

WHAT IS THE ADVANCED PROVISIONING ALLOWANCE?

Advanced provisioning allowance (APA) is the extra fee that you pay in advance to cover the cost of provisions for your charter. It helps to think of the advanced provisioning allowance as like opening a petty cash account for your captain and chef, because it’s the simplest way of tracking charter expenses while you’re on board.

The APA allows the Captain and Crew to fully prepare and customize the experience to exactly how you want to live on board. A ‘preference sheet’ will be prepared in detail between you and your broker and sent to the Captain in good time for him to prepare the yacht for your arrival.

How should I interact with the crew?

The crew are valued employees, ensuring the yacht is run safely, operates smoothly and that service levels are optimised for you and your guests.

Can I invite friends on the yacht?

You’re encouraged to entertain guests during your charter, but please let the crew know if you’re thinking about inviting friends on board. If you give the crew plenty of time to plan, you’ll have the very best experience.

Can I hold a party on board?

Some yachts are happy to hold events on board, but they will need to adhere to regulations as to how many guests can be there at any one time and research local rules for noise levels and events. The yacht may request a security deposit, in case of any damage caused during the charter.

There are also events such as the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival, MIPIM and Venice Film Festival that charter yachts actively encourage charters for guests to have their parties and meetings on.

The number of guests for events varies with the size of yacht, their flag registry rules, their insurance levels and the owner’s comfort level.

Can I bring staff in addition to my guests to stay on board?

Any essential staff such as nannies or physicians may be accommodated if the yacht has suitable cabins available for them. This is requested on a case-by-case basis and full employment status of the individuals will need to be provided. The yacht crew will ensure that the staff are given any necessary safety training and advise them on how service works on the yacht.

Can I bring my pet?

Most yachts are not set up to accommodate pets on charter but there are some that give them a warm welcome. When enquiring for your charter please do state if you have a pet hoping to travel with you, their size, breed (if relevant) and ideally also send a photo.

What happens while the crew clean?

The crew are very skilled at making sure everything is shipshape – but they always appreciate it when guests take their morning coffee on the sundeck, for example, as it gives them a chance to make sure your stateroom is made up and ready.

What happens if I have a problem?

Every member of the crew wants you to have the very best experience. But if you have any questions or concerns, a quick chat with the Captain is the best thing to do.

Are any areas off-limits?

Please don’t enter the crew areas without permission. The Captain or First Officer will give

you a safety briefing upon embarkation, which will go over how to stay safe on board. For your own safety, take the time to familiarise yourself with all the information provided about lifejackets and the lifeboat drill.

Do I have to take my shoes off?

Please make sure you’re barefoot during the charter or wear the slippers many yachts provide. Teak decks are notoriously fragile and dents and scuffs on the well-polished wood are a big nono. Similarly, street shoes can damage a yacht’s antique carpets or custom flooring. Most crews will provide a shoe basket at the end of the gangway to keep your favourite shoes safe.

Can I smoke onboard?

As a general rule, most superyachts don’t allow smoking inside the yacht anymore – but check the policy for each yacht. There’s often a designated smoking area on deck for those who fancy an after-dinner cigar.

What luggage should I use?

Soft luggage that can be easily folded up and stowed away is the best option for packing. That’s because although guest staterooms are beautifully designed, storage is always an issue. Hardshell luggage is difficult to store at the best of times.

Clare Dudley, Director of luxury travel specialists, Ponders Travel, was recently a guest of Croisi Europe and invited on a truly epic Safari-Cruise adventure to South Africa and Botswana...

“As a guest of Croisi Europe, I was invited to embark upon a Safari-cruise in Southern Africa, and it really was one of the most wonderful trips I have ever had the privilege to take.

On this trip I visited 5 countries in one holiday… over just 9 days! South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Travelling on the water along the River Chobe and then onto Lake Kariba where we saw so many animals. I genuinely didn’t have any idea that we would see so many Hippos and Elephants! We saw Antelope, Impalas, Kudu, Baboons, Buffalo, Crocodiles, Warthogs and so many wonderful species of birds.

We stayed in the most tranquil and luxury lodges. We enjoyed sailing on our own little boat with just 8 cabins. In the National Parks with our guides and on the water, we genuinely felt like we were the only ones there and the guides worked so hard to ensure that we saw as much wildlife as possible up close. On top of watching the incredible wildlife and scenery by land and water,

we also travelled on light aircraft, one of which just held the two of us! In all my travels I don’t think I have come back from a trip where I genuinely cannot find one single thing I would change. The holiday was INCREDIBLE!

On the trip, I was joined by many other agents from around the world. All who had travelled to Africa many times and enjoyed many different safaris. They all said that for them, this experience was the best. They felt that the very nature of the water, the non-commercial way this very intimate holiday experience is run, allowed us to feel more at one with nature and left us all feeling very special.

Most of the travelling we did was on the water, which was idyllic. I did not miss cars and traffic one bit! I have to say it was a little inconvenient waiting for some hippos to slowly cross in front (I jest of course!). I have heard stories before of many Jeeps rushing to get the best views of the animals, but we were the only ones! So the time to enjoy and explore was very much in the guides hands.

Every day during the trip, I went to bed thinking ‘this day has been the absolute highlight’, feeling like it couldn’t possibly get better tomorrow. Each day, I was wrong. In truth every day just got better and better, as we had new exciting experiences. To finish off the safari/adventure, we took a trip to Victoria Falls which was quite something.

With a Career that spans superyacht crew, ski chalet sales director, and her current role as Senior Charter Consultant at Ocean Independence, it is fair to say Hanneke knows a thing or two about luxury travel.

So, when the Aeolian Islands were her answer to the question, “What is your favourite yachting destination?”, we just had to find out more.

1. WHY THE AEOLIAN ISLANDS?

One of my favourite places to visit – which, to this date remains a hidden gem – is the unspoiled and utterly fascinating Aeolian Islands, just north of Sicily.

The Aeolian Islands are a mixture of jewels that attract an equally mixed crowd of Sicilian princes, European royalty, families in search of a quiet holiday, and an international fashion crowd.

Once the haunt of ancient deities, the beautiful island group in the Tyrrhenian Sea is now worshipped for its smouldering volcanoes and glittering nightlife.

2. FAVOURITE YACHTS CRUISING THERE?

Italian life is all about living well, and looking fabulous while you’re doing it. There are a lot of stunning yachts in and around southern Italy that fit the bill. Three yachts stand out for me, for their impeccable service, amenities, and stylish designs, are Elements, LEL and Archelon.

4. WHERE IS A GREAT SPOT TO GO FOR A DRINK?

At dusk, the rooftop terrace at Raya Hotel, a short stroll from the quaint harbour in San Pietro, comes alive. It is an essential stop and meeting place for all who decide to spend their holidays in the Aeolian Archipelago. The panoramic view, accompanied by music and fragrant cocktails offers a unique experience.

5. TO EAT OUT?

The Aeolians have long boasted one of the Mediterranean’s most dynamic—and underrated— dining scenes, and there’s no shortage of exciting eateries to choose from.

For me, Signum on the island of Salina is a must-visit. Best experienced with your nearest and dearest, ask for a table on the main terrace, covered by a pergola. Head Chef Martina is deeply committed to her island, sourcing regional delicacies that pack her dishes with authenticity and freshness.

5. TO DIP INTO THE LOCAL CULTURE?

The remote island of Filicudi is filled with natural wonders. Ancient pathways meander amidst ancient vines and olive trees, while prehistoric village ruins can be found at Capo.

Cruise past the famed La Canna rock and the bright blue Grotta del Bue Marino – the area’s largest cave, which is also home to monk seals.

7. TOP TIPS?

If I was planning my dream Aeolian Islands yacht charter, my first move would be to book a larger yacht with overnight cruise capacity and combine the Aeolians with the Amalfi coast (10+hrs) or the Sicily coastline (Taormina).

SAVING SEA TURTLES ONE SIP AT A TIME

Lost Years is the spirits brand with a purpose –a range of exceptional rums devoted to saving endangered sea turtles ...

Last November, ‘Lost Years Rum’ celebrated its 2nd anniversary after launching at the height of lockdown in 2020 with a single mission in mind. Save endangered sea turtles.

For every drop of rum sold, it pledges a portion of sales to charity and has raised more than $5,000 already. In these two years, it is has saved over 55,000 baby sea turtles following recent donations to global partner charity SEE Turtles.

To celebrate its 2nd birthday, Lost Years Rum launched its debut range of spiced rums. It’s new Wandering Turtle collection consists of an unusual silver spiced rum made with single origin rum from Antigua, which is then flavoured with coconuts, blood orange, mandarins, limes, vanilla and exotic spices. The second flavour combines golden rums from Jamaica, Venezuela, and Nicaragua with a unique blend of pineapples and tropical spices.

The brand itself is named after the once mysterious early years of a sea turtle’s life. No one knew where they disappeared to during this time in their lifecycle. Researchers, however, have been able to better piece together some of their movements from observation in recent years.

‘It’s wonderful that this brand – the idea for which was hatched on our last family holiday in Jamaica in 2019 – is already making such a difference,’ said Lee Smith, Lost Years founder. ‘The entire reason we started Lost Years Rum was

to help as many of these gorgeous little creatures begin their own journey into the lost years.’
