The Jewish people are indeed unique, different from any other nation in the world. The cohesiveness of other nations is due to their patriotism and loyalty to their land and country. Hence, when they move from their land, they quickly assimilate and soon lose their identity. The Jewish people too have a land. However, it is our allegiance to Hashem and His Torah, which assures our existence and allows us to prosper even in every other land to which we have been forced to immigrate. This point is alluded to in the opening of this week’s parsha – ‘Vayechi Yaakov B’Eretz Mitzrayim.’ After a most difficult life, full of various tribulations, finally Yaakov was able to “live” in tranquility and pride. Where? B’eretz Mitzrayim – in the land, which is destined for metzorim -communal trials and frustrations. Not only do we need to display our allegiance to Hashem, but we also need also to feel a sense of pride at the realization that every Jewish individual is a special member of Hashem’s chosen nation. A mashal is told of a Yid traveling for the very first time from his small shtetl. He went to the train station and after purchasing a first-class ticket, was told to wait on the platform for the train’s arrival. Since this was a small town, he was the only waiting passenger, but as the train pulled in, a group of hooligans rushed onto the platform. Not knowing any better, he followed the hooligans into the last compartment where they all hid under the seats. However, due to his innocence and inexperience, his feet stuck out and when the conductor came around he was found. They pulled him out ranting and raving and de(continued on page 2)
