Mazal Tov! Rabbi and Mrs Gedaliah Oppen on the birth of a grandson, Avraham Aryeh
Dvar Chizuk אראך להנאתך ולטובתך, אל הארץ, לך לך מארצך וממולדתך ומבית אביך, ויאמר ה“ אל אברם:לך ( לךRashi) At the beginning of this week’s parsha, Avraham Avinu successfully faces the nisayon of “Lech Lecha,” surrendering himself to Hashem’s will, and to an unknown and uncertain future. However, Rashi points out that this is for Avraham’s “benefit and his good.” Obviously, when Avraham Avinu is told that something is going to be for his good, it does not only mean towards himself, but it means everlasting for years to come. Interestingly, our Shemoneh Esrei begins, “Elokei Avraham, Elokei Yitzchak,Vei’lokei Yaakov.” Even the final redemption is promised in that first bracha, “Umeivi go’el livnei veneihem” and, in fact the bracha ends with “magein Avraham.” Indeed, Avraham Avinu could not have dreamt the reward given to him and his children in his merit. The lesson that can be derived is the merit that every person can expect for every deed done lesheim shamayim, it is Hashem’s manifestation of his love towards any person who does his will, and certainly we, His beloved children. The Mishna teaches (Avos 5) עשרה נסיונות נתנסה אברהם אבינו,Avraham, our forefather was tested (continued on page 2)
