With a projected 10% CAGR by 2030, India's plastic consumption is expected to almost double to 30-40 million tonnes annually. Currently, the waste ecosystem rests at the back of a weak collection infrastructure, poor source segregation rates and a fragmented informal sector – each contributing to low quality of waste feedstock, not fit for recycling and an overall low recovery value. The waste ecosystem has also picked up momentum in the last few years due to proactive government actions to promote sustainable practices, citizen actions in terms of increasing awareness and private sector actions.
To build on this momentum, and accelerate its impact, Xynteo, in partnership with Hindustan Unilever and SBI Foundation has developed an end-to-end financially viable model to drive systems change across the waste system. The Islands of Excellence (IoE) model, is a public-private-partnership between Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), SMEs, recyclers, social enterprises and grassroots.
