The metal and mining sector is a significant contributor (contributes around 15% of the total global emissions) to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, primarily due to energy-intensive processes such as smelting, refining, and transportation. The decarbonisation of this sector is paramount in the global effort to mitigate climate change. There are multiple pathways to decarbonise this sector, including usage of biofuels, use of green hydrogen, transition to renewables, carbon management (Carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), carbon sequestration etc) and recycling. A combination of these pathways would need to be deployed in the short, medium and long term to meet the decarbonisation targets. These pathways currently face value chain challenges that limit accelerated adoption in India.
The objective of the studio was to bring together various stakeholders to identify challenges for these different pathways and brainstorm solutions to accelerate adoption.
