The building sector currently contributes about a fifth to India’s total emissions, a concerning figure given 50% of building stock expected by 2030 in India hasn’t yet been built. This calls for a focus on decarbonising the materials and the processes that go into constructing these buildings to avoid carbon lock-in while simultaneously achieving India’s development goals. Build Ahead is a business-led coalition, dedicated to collectively tackling the challenge of achieving a net-zero built environment in India. Four focus areas were identified for the Studio, to both accelerate existing projects and co-develop new ideas for the coalition to integrate:
1. Buildings of the future
2. Ways to increase circularity in construction through construction & demolition (C&D) waste
3. Increasing adoption of low carbon materials
4. Affordable housing using sustainable materials
