Year 3 : 9/2020 - 1/2021 ARC205 Studio Work Instructor: Gergely Csikvari

Prologue The relationship between human and nature, and between architecture and landscape are constantly updated. Architecture, as a crucial element in human society, affects each aspect of human existence. The intervention of architecture in the natural environment should not damage the environment, but contribute to progress of the environment and society to make it even better. Architecture intervenes in the social environment, in a city, it acts not only as a shelter, but also as a human bond that binds us together. Architecture has made an indelible contribution to the development of human civilization. At a time when the earth's environment is deteriorating, as an architect, I believe that sustainable development strategies that protect the earth's environment are significant.

Oriental Caravanserai Located in Suzhou, a city with thousands of years of history, the project aims to create a caravanserai alongside the Suzhou moat which provides residential and commercial areas for increasing visitors in Suzhou. The caravanserai was inspired by the morphology of ancient Suzhou City, a central public realm surrounded by residences. The building connects the exterior and interior moats visually and performs as a link between ancient city area and new district of Suzhou.

New District

Suzhou, romanticised as Soochow; the old town is the cultural centre of Jiangnan, and was the capital of the Wu Kingdom from 12th to 4th centuries BC. In the past, along the Silk Roads, Suzhou linked China to the West. It is famous in Suzhou that is Sue fan, umbrella, embeoidery and storytelling and ballad singing in Suzhou dialect, etc.

Suzhou old city wall has a long history. It protects the people in the city. From the Spring and Autumn period to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, from tamped earth to bricks at the very beginning, suzhou city wall has undergone demolition and reconstruction again and again.

Today, Suzhou is the world’s largest manufacturing base of laptop computers, and a city of thirteen million (the old town around two hundred and fifty thousand). The city is developing at a high speed, and its GDP has reached the top ten in China in 2020. The Gate of the Orient is famous in the world.

Old City Wall

Urban Block

Suzhou Street

The old city wall was surounding the whole old town, and protect the old city form outside threat. However, the enclose walls impeded the communication between the inside and outside and slowed down the development of the city, so in the modern times, the city walls were being destroyed gradually. Nowadays, people are starting to realize the cultural importance of Old City Wall and protect them.

The whole old town was divided into several urban blocks by the main road. The function of them was not only the administrative divisions, but also help people kown each other easily. Public realms are in the central part of the city and surrounded by residential areas. The traditional “Jieshi” (Street & Market) layout has been using by administrators for a long time.

Suzhou streets neatly divide Suzhou old city into different areas. In these areas, there are many alleys. Some are narrow, some are wide. Some are next to the river, and some are next to houses with small courtyards. These suzhou alleys give people a sense of quiet leisure. The enormous vitality and slow-paced life attract a lot of people.

Create courtyards to maximize the sunlight penetration and promotes the communication of residents.

Dwelling units are divided into three different types. Access is set to connect the circulation of the residence and pathway.

Use slope roofs to strengthen the sense of traditional Suzhou streets. Gaps are set between roofs for sunlight penetration.

Type 1 - Short-Term Units • The single-storey buildings are provided for the short term living in the interior of 'urban block'. • Three or four units create a courtyard. The residents of these units share one common courtyard to have a communication and share the fun. It can promote the relationship with other people. • The concave windows give a nice view form the interior, and use the curtains to portect the private problem.

Type 2 - Mid-Term Units • The double-storey buildings are provided for the middle term living on the boundary of the two 'urban block'. • One or two adjacent units create a courtyard. The residents of the one or two units share one courtyard. They can clear up the courtyard individualy. • The concave windows that are form ground floor to the first floor also give a nice view form the interior, and use the curtains to portect the private problem.

Type 3 - Long-Term Units • The double-storey buildings are provided for the long term living and above the commercial area. • The residents can stand on the highest location of the project building and look at the roof of the 'urban block' and the busy commercial area. • This is the most private unit in the three unit types.

AFTERLIFE Desertification is one of the challenges that human being has to face as the earth's environment deteriorates day by day. This project simulates a future world in which the desert slowly consumes the city. In a situation of extreme lack of water resources, human beings will combine plant bionics and architecture to absorb water from the desert world to maintain the operation of the sandy city.

Desertification is getting seriously out of people's control. The city is swallowed up by the desert, and people are forced to flee.

Scientists and architects have found ways to deal with the desert and reverse it by building skyscrapers in it. 4. Desertization

The Migrant The project aims to help provide housing for migrant workers in big cities. Most of them have made great contributions to urban construction, but they tend to live in some poor suburbs or villages in the city. Many of the buildings are dilapidated and difficult to maintain. The modular installation can be quickly assembled and disassembled, and the number of rooms can be changed at will according to the size and shape of the site. This greatly reduces the reconstruction cost of the old buildings in the city and improves the efficiency of the project.
