Somos Àngels y Xuan, amamos la fotografía de paisaje y os queremos conducir con nuestra experiencia fotográfica a la tierra de colinas de cipreses con niebla y cielos inmensos a la ensoñadora región de Toscana.

La organización y planificación de un viaje fotográfico implica más trabajo que cuando se trata de un viaje normal (desplazamiento, alojamiento, transporte,…), resulta necesario sumar los propios que conlleva nuestra afición: el transporte y cuidado de nuestro material fotográfico, la búsqueda de las localizaciones, estudio de horas de salida y puesta de sol, la exploración in situ de las localizaciones en busca de los mejores encuadres… Además, casi con toda seguridad que todos los aspectos que planifiquemos girarán en torno a la fotografía y a intentar transmitir con ella nuestras emociones, que será lo que dará sentido a nuestro viaje.

Se trata de disfrutar de todas las experiencias que sin duda nos brindará el viaje, intentando que la pasión por la fotografía no nos ciegue (sabemos que es difícil), procurando distraernos y dejando tiempo para descansar y recuperar fuerzas.

Organising and planning a photographic trip requires a lot more effort than the “conventional” holiday escapade.

It becomes necessary to take other issues into consideration: transportation and care of our gear, the search of the ideal locations in order to achieve the perfect framing, the study of the exact times for the sunset and dawn… we both knew beforehand that most of our time would be devoted to the photography and our attempt to channel our emotions through it.

However, it is key to enjoy each and every one of the wonderful experiences the trip will bring, trying not to get carried away pursuing the perfect shot. That’s the reason why we will always leave some time to rest and recover.

Nuestra planificación comienza por pensar en lugares o destinos que, desde un punto de vista fotográfico, tengan algo especial para nosotros. Pensamos que pasa necesariamente por la búsqueda de temas que aporten singularidad y los hagan diferentes a lo que estemos acostumbrados a ver en nuestra tierra de origen o incluso distinto a lo que hayamos visto de esa zona que vamos a visitar. A la vez, intentamos determinar qué época del año puede ser la más adecuada para nuestros intereses y qué medios de transporte serán los más apropiados.

Nos sentimos orgullosos de tener entre nuestros principios la defensa del medioambiente y la conservación no solo de elementos naturales del paisaje, sino también del patrimonio cultural y etnográfico de los pueblos, a la vez que sentimos un gran amor por la naturaleza, de forma que estos principios guían y condicionan lógicamente nuestro trabajo fotográfico, y hace que sintamos especial predilección por la fotografía de paisaje. No os sorprenderá pues que, en esta ocasión, nos decantáramos por Toscana.

Our planning process begins by selecting the areas that could be interesting to shoot.

We think it unavoidably is associated with the search of elements that provide uniqueness and makes these places different from what we are used to see at our homeland.

We try our hardest to contribute to the protection of our environment, caring not only about the natural components of the landscape, but also the cultural heritage of the communities we visit. Both of us are passionate about nature, so, consequently these principles rule our artistic work and make us lean clearly towards landscape photography.

We think that you are not surprised with this decision.

Nos pusimos a buscar información sobre cuáles podrían ser las localizaciones más apropiadas. Hay que reconocer que ahora con internet todo es más sencillo, nos permite hacer búsquedas muy completas y variadas, sobre todo en las diversas aplicaciones de las redes sociales, webs específicas de fotografía o bancos de imágenes y videos sobre la zona. Nosotros usamos, entre otros, Flickr, 1x, 500px, Facebook, Pinterest, Locationscout, Issuu y Fotolia. También solemos fijarnos en las páginas de turismo de las zonas donde planificamos el viaje, así como en sus guías turísticas (pensamos que siempre aportan información y fotos interesantes). A menudo estas búsquedas nos conducen a webs y blogs para tratar de encontrar fotógrafos que sean de la zona donde vayamos a ir (creemos que son los que mejor se conocen todos los “rincones”) o que hayan hecho un buen trabajo sobre los temas que vamos buscando fotografiar, sobre todo en webs bien documentadas y revistas especializadas de fotografía.

Así nos dimos cuenta de que la región de Toscana es muy extensa para pretender abarcarla en una semana y por ello nos decantamos por dos zonas concretas: el Val d’Orcia y el Crete Senesi. No queríamos dejar de ver con nuestros propios ojos aquellas localizaciones y puntos de interés más conocidos y emblemáticos (Podere Belvedere, Baccoleno, Capella Vitaleta, los cipreses de San Quirico,…), pero también fuimos desde el principio con la clara intención de buscar y traernos algo diferente, al menos de intentar encontrar otros “rincones” para ofrecer una visión más personal. Sabíamos lo que queríamos, lo teníamos claro, sólo teníamos que encontrar los lugares adecuados, y ello pasaba por explorar caminos menos transitados de estas zonas.

We began our research to find the perfect spots, using extremely useful online tools such as Flickr, 1x, 500px, Facebook, Pinterest, Locationscout, Issuu or Fotolia.

These amazing apps get you in touch with other colleges that know the area better, and allow you to get inspired by their shots, giving you valuable ideas to achieve the optimal result once you are there. Furthermore, it is of great value to take a look at some of the area’s tourism webpages, or even specialized magazines.

Soon enough we understood that Toscana was way too extensive for only a week, so we determined to focus on two specific regions: Val d’Orcia and Crete Senesi. We didn’t want to miss any of the most iconic scenes (Belvedere, Baccoleno, Capella Vitaleta, San Quirico…) but on the other hand, we had the firm purpose of at least trying to find other hidden corners to showcase a more personal approach.

To achieve this, we explored some of the less transited paths and villages around, which also gave us a great opportunity to taste the exquisite gastronomy and wines during our breaks.

Por otra parte, para los momentos de “desconexión” de la fotografía, además esta zona nos daba la oportunidad de visitar sus preciosos pueblos medievales y, cómo no, disfrutar de su amplia carta gastronómica y de vinos.

No nos sentimos muy atraídos por localizaciones donde tenemos que estar constantemente pendientes de si le estamos pisando el encuadre al compañero/a o esperando cola para hacer determinada foto. Por ello nos atraen más las zonas tranquilas o los espacios naturales al aire libre, y si no nos queda más remedio de ir a zonas más masificadas, en la medida de lo posible, procuramos hacer estos viajes en temporada baja o media. Y por eso, en este caso, nos decidimos por ir a mediados de mayo, puesto que, además de no ser una época tan concurrida como el verano, esperábamos encontrar y captar esas diversas gamas de tonos verdes tan propios de los campos de cultivo de cereales toscanos (trigo, cebada y avena, sobre todo), así como aprovecharnos de esos cielos espectaculares que surgen por las condiciones tan cambiantes de tipos de tiempo tan propios de esta época y zona, que generan unas atractivas e impactantes luces crepusculares que se proyectan sobre las colinas y los campos toscanos.

Usually we try to avoid crowded places; it’s very upsetting to constantly worry about interfering with someone else’s work or queuing for the best angles. However, if there is no other way around it, we try to visit these locations off season. In this particular case we chose the second week of May, which proved to be consistently calmer than summer, and granted us the chance to capture an outstanding variety of greens, hallmark of the cereal fields of the area. We were lucky enough to witness some gorgeous skies, probably thanks to the very fluctuating weather at that time of the year, furnished with amazing lights near dawn.

Día a día nos fuimos creando nuestro propio mapa de localizaciones y las fuimos añadiendo a Google Maps, a la vez que anotamos algunas indicaciones y consejos que nos pudieran ser útiles en relación a sus posibles encuadres, a su orientación, si es mejor para el amanecer o el atardecer, y todos aquellos detalles que nos ayuden más adelante a decidirnos sobre qué localización puede ser más conveniente o cuáles serán descartadas (al menos para este viaje).

En esta fase, también nos apoyamos mucho en Google Earth para ver de cerca dichos sitios desde distintas perspectivas y orientación, para saber cómo son sus accesos, si podemos llegar en coche, qué tipo de carretera, camino o senda hay para llegar o cuánta distancia hay caminando para aproximar el tiempo que tardaremos en llegar. También nos resultó muy práctico crear una carpeta en el ordenador (y pasarla también al móvil) con impresiones de pantalla de aquellas fotos que más nos gustaban. Si tenemos ocasión, aprovechamos siempre la oportunidad de poder hablar con alguien que ya haya estado en esa zona, buscando que nos puedan aconsejar adecuadamente.

Asimismo, resulta muy cómodo elaborar una tabla combinada con información día a día de las horas de salida y puesta del sol y hacerle una foto con el móvil para tenerla a mano siempre que la necesitemos y no depender de la cobertura.

Siempre procuramos hacer las fotos en esos momentos mágicos de luz suave que son los amaneceres y los atardeceres. Para determinar en cuál de esos dos momentos del día ir preferentemente a una localización utilizamos básicamente Photopills y The Photographer’s Ephemeris.

Little by little our own mini map of locations kept growing, as we added them to our Google Maps account. At the same time we wrote down any additional information that could be useful, regarding the time of the day to visit, or a particular composition for the picture. Google Earth also proved to be extremely valuable, enabling us to watch our favourite scenarios from different perspectives and angles, or even letting us know if it was possible to get to that place by car (we could even check if the road was dangerous or not) or by walking a reasonable distance. We both made sure to create a folder in our computers to save our favourite pictures as an inspiration. As we said before it is always advisable to ask some locals for advice, as well as creating a schedule with the exact times when the sun goes up and down (remember to take a picture with your phone of this information, as you won’t always have signal!)

Without a doubt, our favourite moments to capture are dawn and dusk. To keep track of the exact location and time when these will happen we use Photopills and The Photgrapher’s Ephemeris.

Y así vamos elaborando una lista de localizaciones de amanecer y otras para el atardecer, procurando dejar tiempo para explorar esas zonas con luz diurna de una forma más detenida y exhaustiva, intentando encontrar los mejores encuadres fotográficos posibles y determinando si también podrían funcionar para ambos momentos del día, que a veces ocurre, ofreciéndonos un resultado muy diferente y en ocasiones perfectamente válido tanto para amanecer como para atardecer.

Las ganas de salir ya se empezaban a notar unos días antes del viaje, y es que uno disfruta de la emoción del viaje desde el mismo momento en que empieza a prepararlo y estudiarlo todo, pero a medida que se acerca el día de partir, todo se acelera. Nos preocupaba el tiempo que tendríamos, por ello hicimos constantes consultas a diversas webs sobre las previsiones meteorológicas con que nos íbamos a ir encontrando durante los próximos días, resultan útiles y convenientes para ir con la ropa y calzado adecuados. En función de las previsiones de la meteo decidimos dirigirnos primero a la Val d’Orcia y después subir al Crete Senesi, aunque, en general, luego siempre vamos improvisando día a día en función del tiempo meteorológico. Nuestro periplo comienza el domingo, 6 de mayo en que salimos de Gijón/Xixón hacia Santander para tomar un vuelo low cost con destino a Roma. Roma es agotadora, un hervidero de gentes heterogéneas, un crisol de razas, un pequeño país de mezcolanza, de lenguas variadas. Como la puesta de sol era a las 20:12, aprovechamos la tarde para dar una vuelta por los alrededores, ver un par de localizaciones que teníamos previstas: una para el amanecer, el castillo de Sant’Angelo visto desde el puente homónimo situado sobre el Tíber y la otra de atardecer: la magnífica cúpula de Miguel Ángel desde el Ponte de Umberto I o desde la propia Piazza de San Pedro y estudiarlas más detenidamente in situ y con luz.

However, whenever it’s possible, we enjoy taking our time to explore the area in broad daylight as well, working with different framings and trying to figure out what kind of light (dusk or dawn) would make every piece of it look better.

Days before the trip we started feeling nervous and excited. All these emotions keep growing from the moment you start planning to the day you finally leave. We were slightly worried about the weather, so we made sure to double check different websites before deciding what clothes to pack with us, or the order in which we would visit our chosen spots. Finally we agreed to start our journey in Val d’Orcia, and then move north to Crete Senesi.

Our adventure began on Sunday 6th, with a short drive from Gijón/Xixón to Santander, where we would catch a plane to Rome.

What an exhausting, yet amazing city, full of life and cultural diversity. The sunset would take place at 20:12, so we spent the evening walking around and taking a look at a few locations we had preselected: Sant’Angelo’s castle, from the homonymous bridge at dawn, and Miguel Angelo’s dome, from Ponte de Umberto I at dusk. Unluckily, a persistent rain ruined our plans for the day, and left us wet and tired.

Lo que son las cosas, el tiempo no nos dio tregua, puesto que no paró de llover, apenas pudimos fotografiar nada de todas estas maravillas, pero deambular por toda Roma con el equipo a cuestas fue agotador.

A pesar del cansancio y de que era un destino de transición hacia nuestro verdadero objetivo, nos fuimos con un buen sabor de boca, sobre todo por haber podido disfrutar del espectáculo de juego de luces y sombras que supone la filtración de la luz a través de la enorme linterna del Panteón de Agripa, o el paseo por el Trastévere con el empedrado mojado de sus calles tras una tarde pasada por agua, el emocionarse viendo de noche esa fontana inmortalizada para siempre en el cine por Fellini ,y es que en la vida no todo son fotos.

El miércoles, 9 de mayo, tras recoger el coche en la estación Términi (aconsejamos pasar sin pisar este caos de estación, si se puede claro está), iniciamos nuestro desplazamiento a Toscana. El cambio es drástico, del bullicio y el caos de Roma, se pasa a la tranquilidad y la paz que nos transmite un entorno rural más tranquilo y natural. El agriturismi Podernuovo, rodeado de olivos y arcillas del Crete Senesi y una familia encantadora, que nos acogió como buenos anfitriones. Ahora sí que empezaban nuestras vacaciones fotográficas de verdad!

Una vez descansados, salimos a explorar las distintas localizaciones de San Quirico.

Cuando íbamos en el coche, a unos 3,5 km antes de llegar a San Quirico desde la carretera SR-2, tuvimos que parar nada más pasar el puente, porque el impacto visual que tienen los grupos de cipreses que salpican las onduladas colinas es realmente espectacular.

Por supuesto ya no nos movimos de allí, ya que nos entretuvimos buscando distintos encuadres y nos quedamos a hacer el atardecer en esta localización.

However, Rome was nothing but a stop in our way to Toscana. Consequently, we were determined to keep only the beautiful memories of the rain falling over Trastévere, Panteón de Agripa, or the magnificent Fontana di Trevi, immortalized by Fellini.

Wednesday 9th, after picking up our rental car at Términi station (it would be better to avoid stepping into this chaotic place if possible), we began our journey to Toscana. We soon noticed the huge contrast between crowded Rome, and the peace surrounding Toscana, where we would meet our hosts: a lovely family that lived in Podernuovo, enveloped by clay and olive trees. Our photographic holidays had now truly begun!

After taking a break, we went out to explore the area around San Quirico. We were forced to stop the car 3.5 km away from our destiny, as the mesmerizing view of thousands of cypresses appeared before our eyes, and certainly deserved a more detailed look. Time flew, and we spent the rest of the day working on the best framings, then waited until dusk to finally capture that beautiful sight with our cameras.

Fue un espectáculo casi malabarista intentar hacer alguna foto y no te digo nada, intentar cambiar el objetivo para pasar a un gran angular: el trapo en mano, el paraguas, la mochila colgada con la funda puesta para no mojarla, pero nuestra ilusión y ansias de fotografiar estos cipreses no desistió y al fin dejó de llover, y la naturaleza nos regaló unos minutos de luz maravillosa, las nubes que salieron tras la tormenta fueron realmente buenas y fueron cogiendo muy buenos tonos a medida que el sol se ponía en el horizonte.

Mientras estuvimos trabajando toda esta zona sur del puente, tuvimos tiempo de fijarnos que el lado norte del mismo también nos ofrecía amplias posibilidades por los cipreses solitarios que aparecían entre el camino serpenteante o en las cimas de las colinas.

Nos retiramos contentos con lo conseguido ese primer día, aunque salpicados de arcilla y las botas embarradas a tope, con tanto barro habíamos crecido unos cuantos centímetros El tiempo vuela, y así a la mañana siguiente -apenas unas horas más tarde- estábamos otra vez carretera abajo hacia San Quirico por la SP 60 del Pecorile y luego la SP 60/A. Pero esta vez, no podíamos pedir más, había unas nieblas bajas impresionantes que dejaban ver o entrever las distintas granjas que salpican toda esta zona de colinas. La verdad que no sabíamos donde parar, apetecía hacerlo tras cada curva, aunque al final decidimos intentar capturar otro clásico: el podere Belvedere.

A las 5:30 h ya estábamos posicionados.

Lo cierto es que si tantos y tan buenos fotógrafos/as a lo largo de los tiempos han captado esta granja desde las proximidades de la carretera que va de San Quirico a Pienza, es por algo. Al igual que los cipreses de la tarde anterior, tiene imán visual, te atrae irremediablemente, no lo puedes evitar. El corazón se nos puso a cien cuando, como un submarino gigante emergía solemne de entre las nieblas matutinas que cubrían los fondos del valle.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t as easy as it seems.

With the best disposition we took our gear out of the car and put some rubber boots on, as our good friend Javier Alonso Torre had previously advised. We focused on a couple hills on the south end of the road and proceeded to shoot at the magnificent trees, attempting different angles. Things got tricky when (again) it started raining. Soon, the clay turned into mud, making it painful to move carrying all our gadgets, and even harder to take decent photographs. Happily, it stopped raining for a few minutes, when we took the chance to portrait the beautiful light that found its way through the clouds. On top of that, as we worked the southern part of the road, we observed how the northern end also offered great possibilities for a future occasion. We went back home proud of the results obtained on our first day and happy, even if we were wet and our boots were all dirty and muddy.

Thrilled about what the next day would bring, we drove early in the morning down the SP 60 road, and then SP 60/A, towards San Quirico.

This time though, we were fortunate enough to find before us a sea of fog, partially covering some of the farms that spread all across these hills. It was difficult to chose only one place to stay for the morning, but we finally agreed to play it safe going to Belvedere. At 5:30 we had everything set up, and we were ready to capture that picturesque farm, just like many great photographers had done before us. The view was unique and breath taking, making our hearts skip a beat.

Llegamos a pensar que teníamos la suerte de cara, pues lograr esta foto en el primer intento, no es frecuente. De todas formas, como somos un tanto exigentes, estando aquí nos dimos cuenta de que hay diversas localizaciones desde las que intentar el encuadre de esta granja y también que unas tienen más fotógrafos/as por metro cuadrado que otras, ésta primera estaba llena y por ello tomamos la decisión de venir diversas mañanas para hacer la foto desde cada una de ellas. Lo cierto es que el amanecer en esta zona siempre despierta interés, es de ensueño y misterioso, y por ello no importa repetir, nunca es lo mismo, siempre es cambiante, ya que se puede trabajar bien con angular o con tele y permite un calado adecuado de los filtros.

A las 7:30 ya estábamos montados de nuevo en el coche rodando a través de la SP 146 di Chanciano en dirección Pienza y rumbo a otra localización de las clásicas de la Val d’Orcia: la Capella della madonna di Vitaleta. Aunque sólo íbamos de recocimiento del terreno, decidimos detenernos justo en el desvío al Agriturismi Poderino. Creemos firmemente que toda planificación y organización son recomendables para la obtención de una buena fotografía, sin embargo tenemos que ser conscientes de que resulta muy importante saber adaptarse a los momentos especiales que puedan ir surgiendo en nuestro camino.

Qué importante es improvisar y tener la mente despierta y abierta para ver las distintas alternativas que surjan. En este caso -y eso en Toscana sucede con mucha frecuencia-, aunque el sol ya estaba algo alto, y los tonos dorados habían pasado, la combinación de unos rayos crepusculares filtrándose entre unas nubes que amenazaban nuevas lluvias hizo que nos paráramos y de nuevo desplegáramos todo el equipo para captar esos rayos de luz que se proyectaban sobre la capilla y la colina en la que se asienta, un momento maravilloso para ser captado por nuestros teleobjetivos.

We felt extremely blessed to be able to take such an amazing photograph first try.

However, to be absolutely fair, we also noticed that there were different angles and locations from which we could attempt to get a different perspective of the farm, some of them less filled with fellow photographers than the one we used that morning. That was the main reason why we determined to return every morning to take a different picture of that scenario we loved so much. We didn’t mind the repetition at all. In all honesty, there’s something different about each and every dawn, there’s always something mysterious and unique that makes them remain interesting, and relatively easy to work with, as they give us the chance to make the most of our filters and lenses.

At 7.30 we were already on our way to another classic location in Val d’Orcia: Capella della Madonna di Vitaleta. To get there we drove across the SP 146 di Chanciano, stopping halfway through, right next to the detour to Agriturismi Poderino. This was one of those occasions where the value of improvisation became clear. Although the sun was already shining up high in the sky, there were some strokes of light making their way through the darkening clouds. This was more than enough to make us stop the car and set up our gear to capture this beautiful sight.

Tras esta parada obligada, nos dirigimos hacia la capilla Vitaleta, y como está en una propiedad privada, tuvimos que dejar el coche en el exterior de la barrera de acceso.

No obstante, hay un pequeño paso que nos permite acceder y acercarnos más a la capilla por un camino de tierra. Tras una exploración detenida, llegamos a la conclusión de que esta localización puede funcionar tanto durante el atardecer como el amanecer.

Nosotros preferimos volver por la tarde para el ocaso, porque estos primeros días, queríamos repetir el amanecer en Belvedere.

De camino a nuestra granja, nos detuvimos nuevamente, pasado San Quirico d’Orcia, en la zona de los cipreses, para examinar el sector al norte de la carretera, siguiendo el camino que discurre por la cresta de una colina y que enlaza al N-NE con la SP 137 entre Torrenieri y Pienza. Nos dimos cuenta de que todo este amplio sector ofrecía muchas posibilidades de hacer otro tipo de fotos a las que estamos acostumbrados a ver de Toscana. Y eso no cabe duda, nos gustaba y mucho. Así pues, decidimos dedicarle la tarde del día siguiente a todo este sector, aunque entrando por la carretera SP 137.

Una de las cosas que nos encanta de salir temprano a hacer el amanecer es que parece que viviéramos dos días en uno (más si haces el atardecer, también). Esto se debe a que hoy nos habíamos levantado a las 4:15 h de la madrugada, y ahora eran las 10:30 h, y comenzaba un nuevo día para nosotros!. Después de volver a desayunar en condiciones, aprovechamos para visitar la localidad de Asciano y hacer unas compras, preparamos la comida y dormimos una creo que merecida siesta. Cuando nos levantamos, la tarde no parecía prometer gran cosa, pero la decisión estaba tomada y salimos en dirección a Vitaleta para hacer el atardecer.

Later that day we headed to Vitaleta chapel which, unfortunately, is situated inside a private property, forcing us to park the car outside the fence surrounding it. However, there is a small path we could follow to come closer to the building. After a careful look we decided this spot would work equally well at dusk and dawn. We would rather chose the first, as we already had the next few dawns booked for Belvedere.

On our way back to our farm, we stopped once again, a few miles after San Quirico d’Orcia, near the cypresses area to examine the northern part of the road, following the path that run across the top of the hill, linking N-NE and SP 137 between Torrenieri and Pienza. This whole place offered a world of possibilities, and we obviously loved it.

Consequently we decided to go back the day after.

One of the things we love the most about waking up early to shoot at dawn is the feeling of living two days in one (especially when we are still awake to photograph the sunset).

That day we had set our alarms at 4:15 am, and, by the time we left that last hill, it was only 10:30 am, and it felt like a new day was beginning for us! After a lovely snack, we took the chance to visit the small town of Asciano and do some shopping. Back home we made lunch and took a short nap to recover some strength. When we woke up, the day didn’t look especially promising. Nonetheless, our minds were made up and we headed to Vitaleta to pursue the sunset.

Mereció la pena, ya por la mañana nos había gustado la capilla desde esta perspectiva, y esta imagen mental que nos habíamos hecho sin duda no nos defraudó cuando aprovechamos unos escasos momentos que nos coincidieron justo con la hora dorada hacia las 20:00 h, ¡el sol enrojeció todo el cielo y la capilla parecía arder y estar a las puertas del mismo infierno!. Fue el mejor momento.

Poco más, únicamente resaltar que es curioso cómo a lo largo de estos días, vamos coincidiendo, de forma espontánea, con las mismas personas y/o grupos de fotógrafía que vienen a hacer lo mismo que nosotros.

Al final, es como que formas una gran familia multilingüista y multiracial, y vamos coincidiendo esporádicamente, amanecer tras atardecer, en distintas localizaciones de la zona. Por allí aparece una pareja de japoneses, él con la réflex, y ella posa y maneja el dron, u otra pareja de rusos, que se coloca a nuestro lado y nos ponen Shine on you crazy diamond de Pink Floyd para deleitarnos el atardecer. Un mundo que nos gusta.

Ya de regreso a la casa, Ciara y Paolo, nos deleitaron con un trozo riquísimo de panal de abejas y con un par de huevos camperos puestos por sus propias gallinas (lo cierto es que nos los dejaban cada día) y que tienen un sabor y una textura especial. Nos gusta mantener conversaciones medio en italiano, medio en castellano con ellos. Son buena gente y sus consejos en distintas materias nos vienen muy bien: tanto en alimentación o pueblos para visitar como en posibles localizaciones, carreteras o caminos, que tras explicarles lo que vamos buscando, nos van aconsejando.

La mañana del viernes, 11 de mayo amaneció también con niebla, pero era muy diferente a la del día anterior. En esta ocasión era mucho más espesa hasta el punto que apenas si nos dejaba ver más allá de 25 m. La granja de Belvedere no quiso mostrarse hoy.

It was well worth it, as we were lucky enough to capture a few moments around 8 pm when all the sky turned red and it seemed like the chapel was lit on fire, right at the gates of hell!

As a side note, we found extremely interesting how, over the days, we run into the same fellow photographers from time to time, to the point where we ended up forming some sort of diverse family, bonded by our love for this fine art. I still remember a particular moment, when a Japanese couple stood right by our side. She posed for him while, in the background, Shine on you crazy diamond

On our way back home, Chiara and Paolo delighted us with a piece of honeycomb and a couple of free range eggs from their own hens (they actually left some for us every day), and they have a special flavour and texture. We like to have conversations have in English have in Spanish with them. They are nice people and their advice in different subjects are very useful for us; both foodwise and suggesting towns, roads or paths for us to visit.

On Friday morning, 11th May, at dawn, there was fog but very different from the day before.

On this occasion it was denser and it limited our visibility below 25 m

Sin embargo, os aconsejamos que no desesperéis nunca ante situaciones no esperadas o que algunos pueden incluso considerar adversas, puesto que si nos adaptamos a ellas, un fantástico mundo se nos abre ante nuestros ojos: siluetas de árboles fantasmagóricos que surgen entre brumas, unas espigas a contraluz, un campo de amapolas rojas que emergen entre la hierba, una tela de araña con gotas de agua suspendidas, una hilera en procesión de cipreses entre la niebla, un mar de nubes que todo lo inunda. Dos horas estuvimos en este sector, explorando múltiples encuadres y temas, y cómo nos divertimos! Después, nos desplazamos nuevamente al punto del día anterior para intentar otra vez capturar Vitaleta con nuestro tele y con varias tomas para hacer una panorámica, y la verdad que no nos podemos quejar del resultado final, pues las brumas de hoy nos mostraron otra imagen más honírica de la capilla.

Finalmente, como aún era temprano y nos quedaba prácticamente de camino y muy cerca de nuestra casa, nos desplazamos para ver la zona de la Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore. La niebla en este sector era aún más densa, así desgraciadamente no la pudimos ni tan siquiera ver. Sin embargo, ya de camino a casa, justo en el cruce de la senda del Pecorile con la SP-60/A, descubrimos un valle precioso, que nos dio bastante juego compositivo.

The Belvedere farm could not be seen today. However, we suggest you never despair when facing unexpected situations or even with situations some may consider adverse, as if we adapt to them, a fantastic world opens in front of our eyes: the shape of phantasmagorical trees that emerge from the haze, sprigs against the light, a field of red poppy emerging from the grass, a spider web with water drops hanging on it, a cypress row amongst the fog, a sea of clouds that invades everything. We spent two hours in this sector, exploring multiples framings and themes, and we did have fun! After this, we moved again to where we were the day before to try again to capture Vitaleta with our telephoto lens. We did a few shots to do a panoramic view, and to be honest, we cannot complain about the end result, as today’s haze showed a more oneiric image from the chapel.

Finally, as it was still early and it was on our way and very close to our house, we went to see the Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore area. The fog in this sector was even denser and, unfortunately, we could not see it. However, on our way back home, in the crossing of the Pecorile path and the SP60/A, we discovered a beautiful valley that generated lots of composition opportunities.

La tarde de este día la recordamos como una de las mejores que disfrutamos en esta zona, tanto por la variedad de situaciones en cuanto a luz, color y el tipo de nubes con las que nos encontramos, como por el precioso y relajado paseo que dimos, como también por la diversidad de encuadres y elementos compositivos y técnicos que utilizamos en una misma sesión (paisajes abiertos, extracciones, formatos apaisados, verticales y panorámicos, tele y angular, con y sin filtros, fotos realizadas a pulso, otras con trípode,…). Dos horas y media sin parar de hacer fotos del atardecer a un lado y otro del camino de tierra que une la SP 137 (donde dejamos el coche, pasado el pueblo de Torrenieri) con la SR 2. Un lujo de sitio. Una gozada inolvidable!!

El sábado 12, nos deparó un triste amanecer. En esta ocasión encontramos una localización que no teníamos para sacar desde otra perspectiva la granja Belvedere. Lo mejor es que este sitio está menos masificado, pues apenas lo conoce la gente y nos ofrece una perspectiva que nos gustó más que la clásica hecha desde más arriba, más cerca de la carretera. Pero esta vez no nos quiso regalar nada. Una sosa mañana a la que intentamos sacar algo al cielo utilizando filtros de gelatina, pero ni así nos convencía el resultado. Así las cosas decidimos irnos a desayunar y regresar a descansar un poco y como uno nunca sabe lo que le espera, justo cuando pasábamos por la zona de los cipreses de San Quirico ya de vuelta nos encontramos con la sorpresa de una luz y nubes realmente fantásticas. Un regalo que duró treinta minutos y que esta vez decidimos hacer desde el mismo puente, con una vista y panorámicas realmente espectaculares de las colinas que hay a ambos lados: tanto de la zona de cipreses como del valle que habíamos recorrido la tarde anterior. Es necesario insistir en que en esta localización hay que extremar las precauciones al máximo, ya que solo hay un pequeño arcen a ambos lados de la carretera, justo para que quepa el trípode.

We remember the afternoon of that day as one of the ones we enjoyed the most in this area, because of the diverse conditions in regards to light, colour and types of cloud that we encountered, and also for the beautiful and relaxed walk we had and for the diversity of framings and composition elements and techniques we used during the same session (open views, extractions, landscape, vertical or panoramic views, telephoto lens and angular, with or without filter, freehand pictures, others taken with the tripod…). We spend two and a half hours taking pictures from the sunset without stop on both sides of the dirt road that connects the SP 137 (where we left the car, after passing Torrenieri town) with the SR 2. A luxury place. An unforgettable pleasure!

On Saturday 12th we had a sad sunrise. On this occasion we found a location that we didn’t know before to shot Belvedere farm from another perspective. The best thing of this place is that it was less overcrowded, since people hardly know it, and it offers us a perspective that we like more than the classic one made from above, nearer the road. But this time it didn’t give anything away. A dull morning in which we tried to shot the sky using gelatin filters, but not even with that we were convinced. Therefore we decided to go for breakfast and to rest for a bit, but because one never knows what is awaiting for them, when we were going through the cypress area of San Quirico on our way back, we were surprised with a fantastic light and clouds. A present that lasted thirty minutes and that this time we shot from the bridge, with a really spectacular view and panoramic from the hills that are on both sides; both from the cypress area and the valley that we had gone all over the previous afternoon. It is important to emphasize that in this location you have to take extra care as there is only a small shoulder on both sides of the road with the space just enough for the tripod.

A las ocho y cuarto de la mañana de ese día no había mucho tráfico, pero aun así, con el fin de evitar al máximo que las fotos salieran movidas por el paso de vehículos, decidimos colocar los trípodes entre junta y junta de dilatación del puente y disparar a velocidades entre 1 y 10 segundos, siempre pendientes de si, en el momento del disparo, había tráfico o no. Por supuesto, calamos nuestros filtros de cristal, tanto el ND degradado suave como el inverso para sacarle el máximo volumen a las magníficas nubes que había en ese momento y metimos nuestro inseparable filtro B+W de 6 pasos para darle un aspecto más suavizado a la composición y algo más de calidez. Creemos que salieron algunas fotos muy buenas de esta corta sesión y que hacen justicia con la belleza de la localización. Esa tarde habíamos quedado con Amada Terradillos y con Fina León Quesada, ya que andaban por la zona y decidimos pasar juntos el fin de semana para conocernos en persona, ya que sólo éramos amigos virtuales del facebook. La idea era hacer el atardecer del Agriturismi Baccoleno y del Podere Pisanella, otro clásico camino serpenteante de cipreses de la Toscana que une ambas granjas y que atrae a muchos fotógrafos y fotógrafas. Por eso fuimos temprano para examinar detenidamente la zona e ir decidiendo entre todos dónde nos posicionaríamos finalmente. Lo cierto es que es una localización que si se tiene la suerte de tener un buen atardecer es de una gran belleza. Hasta que llegó el momento del atardecer estuvimos haciendo extracciones y jugando con distintos encuadres con los cipreses dejando las colinas al fondo.

Finalmente, optamos por empezar la sesión de las granjas algo más abajo de donde se suele colocar todo el mundo, incluyendo en nuestro encuadre una charca a la izquierda del camino blanco de cipreses, puesto que nos parecía una composición menos vista que la que se hace desde más arriba.

At quarter past eight in the morning on that day there was not a lot of traffic, but even then, in order to avoid the pictures to be blurred from the circulating vehicles, we decided to locate the tripod between the junctions of the bridge and to shot at speeds between 1 and 10 seconds, always being on the lookout for whether on the moment of the shot there was traffic or not. Obviously our crystal filters got soaked, both the ND soft degraded and the inverse, that we used in order to make the most of the magnificent clouds that were in that moment and we also used our inseparable filter 6 stop B+W to give a more soft aspect to the composition and a bit more warmth. We believe we have very good pictures from this short session and that they make justice to the beauty of the place.

On that afternoon we were meeting Amada Terradillos and Fina León Quesada as they were also in the area and we decided to spend the weekend together so we could meet in person, as we were only virtual friends on Facebook. The idea was to do the sunset on Agriturismi Baccoleno and Podere Pisanella, another classic winding path of cypress from Tuscany that connects both farms and that attracts lots of photographers. We decided to go early in order to examine the area in detail and decide where we would finally position ourselves. The location is certainly of great beauty if you are lucky to have a good sunset.

Up until it got dark, we were doing extractions and playing with the cypress framing with the hills on the background. Finally, we choose to start the farms session a bit below from where everyone else normally does, including in our framing a pond on the left side of the white cypress path, as we thought it is a less common composition from the one made from above.

No metemos tanto camino y sus curvas no son tan pronunciadas, pero el reflejo de las nubes y/o del sol en la charca también tiene su punto positivo. Y finalmente cuando se habían ido la veintena de fotógrafos que se había reunido allí, subimos a la parte más alta para tener también este conocido encuadre.

El domingo, 13, como la niebla del día anterior nos había impedido ver Belvedere, volvimos una vez más a ver qué suerte tocaba, pero esa madrugada la niebla fue casi igual de densa. La única diferencia es que, en esta ocasión, la granja, sus cipreses, sus olivos y algunos árboles del campo bajo emergían difuminados entre la densa bruma, mostrándonos una imagen menos conocida de este sitio. Al poco tiempo, la niebla fue difuminándose, sobre todo de las partes bajas y pudimos aprovechar para hacer algunas buenas fotos del momento. Apenas duró quince minutos, de la misma forma que se había ido volvió a cubrirse todo de niebla otra vez y decidimos optar por marcharnos a desayunar.

Esa tarde, tras una amena y agradable comida con nuestras amigas, decidimos explorar la zona que se conoce como Crete Senesi y así, siguiendo el consejo de Ciara, la propietaria de Podernuovo, nos adentramos en el camino blanco de tierra arcillosa, que partiendo del cementerio de Asciano y siguiendo por los pueblos de Monte Sta. Marie y Torre A Castello nos conduce a la SS 73 Senese Aretina hasta Arbia, para desde aquí tomar la SP 438, la vía Lauretana Antica, una carretera regional que une Taverne d’Arbia con Rapolano Terme y que dejamos al pasar por Asciano. Es decir un precioso recorrido circular que nos ofrece una gran variedad de paisajes y nos permite conocer mejor toda la singularidad del Crete Senesi.

El camino blanco merece realmente la pena para disfrutar de una sucesión interminable de colinas de distintos colores y tamaños, que muestran una gran variedad en función del cultivo al que se destinen esos campos.

En la Vía Lauretana podemos admirar caminos de cipreses que conducen a granjas solitarias y un desvío hacia el Site Transitoire.

Como nos acostamos muy tarde y estábamos muy cansados, a la mañana siguiente y ultimo día, decidimos no madrugar y aprovechar para visitar algunos pueblos preciosos de la zona como Siena, Monterrigioni, Colle di Val d’Elsa y Volterra.

Y acabamos el sueño de Toscana y como en todos los viajes fotográficos hay emociones, decepciones, alegrías, risas, decepciones y enfados, conocer gente que siempre quedará en tu recuerdo. Aunque de cada viaje acaba uno exhausto, ya estamos planeando próximos viajes, nuevas sensaciones, experiencias y, sobre todo, algunas fotografías.

We don’t include so much of the path and the curves are not so pronounced, but the clouds and/or sun reflection in the pond has its positive effect. And when the twenty something photographers that had met there had finally gone, we went up so we could also have this well-known framing.

On Sunday 13th, since the fog from the previous day didn’t allow us to see Belvedere, we went once again to see if we were lucky, but on that early morning the fog was nearly as dense as the day before. The only difference was that, on this occasion, the farm, the cypress, the olive trees and some trees from the lower field emerged blurry amongst the fog, showing us a less well-known image from this place.

Soon after, the fog started to fade especially from the lower parts and we could make the most of it by taking some good pictures of that moment. It only lasted fifteen minutes, and it was all soon covered up again with fog, so we decided to go for breakfast.

On that afternoon, after a nice meal with our friends, we decided to explore the area known as Crete Senesi, and following the advice of Ciara, the owner of Podernuovo, we got deep into the white path of clay soil, that starts at the Asciano cemetery and follows to the Monte Sta. Marie and Torre A Castello towns and takes us to the SS 73 Senese Aretina until Arbia, from where we took the SP 438, the via Lauretana Antica, a regional road that connects Taverne d’Arbia with Rapolano Terme that we leave when we pass Asciano. It is a beautiful circular route that offers us a great variety of landscapes and allows us to know better all the singularity of Crete Senesi. The white path is really worth it to enjoy an endless succession of different coloured and shaped hills that show a great variety depending on the crops farmed on these fields.

In Via Lauretana we can admire cypress paths that lead to solitary farms and a diversion to Site Transitoire.

As we went to bed very late and we were very tired, on the following morning which was also our last day, we decided not to wake up early and visit some beautiful towns from the area like Siena, Monterrigioni, Colle di Val d’Elsa and Volterra.

So we finished the Tuscany dream, and as in all photographic trips there are emotions, disappointments, happiness, laughter, annoyance, and meeting new people who will always be in your memory. Even though we end up exhausted from every trip, we are already planning new ones, new feelings, experiences and overall, new pictures.
