Ce mois ci dans votre Heritage, Marc Pakanowski nous propose un article sur l’un des personnages les plus controversés de l’histoire des Antilles et d’Amérique: Christophe Colomb. Certains se gaussent d’entendre le mot «découverte» lié aux voyages exploratoires de Colomb. Des chansons traitent même le personnage de «sale menteur» lorsqu’il affirme avoir «découvert» l’Amérique. Il est vrai que Colomb avait été précédé de 18 000 ans par des hommes issus de l’actuelle Mongolie et de Sibérie, à l’origine du peuplement de l’Amérique. Lorsqu’il débarque dans notre région, nos îles sont déjà peuplées par des dizaines de milliers de leurs descendants Arawaks, Taïnos et Caraïbes. Dès l’an 1000, le Viking Leif Erikson explore les côtes de Terre-Neuve et le Labrador, y construit un camp et ouvre la voie à plusieurs expéditions dans le Nord de l’Amérique. Cette colonie embryonnaire sera harcelée par les populations indigènes et la connaissance de cette route vers l’Amérique se perdra au fil des siècles.

Certes, Christophe Colomb ne fut pas le premier à découvrir les terres situées à l’occident de l’ancien monde, mais il sut faire preuve de ténacité, dans une Europe en prise aux guerres de religion et à l’inquisition, pour convaincre et financer ses quatre expéditions dans la mer des Antilles. Une chose est certaine: en quelques dizaines d’années, la découverte de ce «nouveau» continent va provoquer un véritable bouleversement de la répartition des cultures européennes, africaines et asiatiques sur notre planète et la disparition de nombreuses civilisations américaines. Ainsi, la politique de colonisation provoqua-t-elle un grand brassage de cultures du monde qui donnèrent naissance aux sociétés antillaises. Ce qui nous amène à la découverte de l’histoire des familles et plus particulièrement de celles de Saint Martin. Nos origines multiples ont forgé notre culture et certains se sont déjà depuis longtemps lancés dans la reconstitution de leur généalogie. Heritage vous propose dans cette édition de vous initier aux sources de l’histoire des familles en délivrant quelques astuces qui vous permettront d’accéder aux documents manuscrits des archives nécessaires pour élaborer un arbre généalogique. Le Musée présente déjà sur son site les registres d’Etat Civil de Saint Martin entre 1773 et 1830. Pour finir, Heritage possède maintenant une page sur facebook et plusieurs centaines d’entre vous sont déjà nos amis. This month in your Heritage, Marc Pakanowski offers us an article on one of the most controversial individuals of the West Indies and American history: Christopher Columbus. Some mock when hearing the word «discovery» linked to Christopher Columbus’ exploratory voyages. Songs even call the individual a «damned blasted liar» when he claims to have «discovered» America. It is true that Columbus had been preceded 18,000 years back by men having come from what is the present-day Mongolia and Siberia, and having started off the populations of America. When he disembarks in our region, our islands are already populated by tens of thousands of their Arawak, Tainos and Carib descendants. As of the year 1000, the Viking Leif Erikson explores the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador, builds a camp there and opens the way to several expeditions towards Northern America. This freshly starting colony will be plagued by the indigenous populations and the knowledge of this access towards America will be lost along the centuries. Certainly, Christopher Columbus was not the first to discover the lands located west of the Old World, but he was sufficiently perseverant, in a European continent subject to wars of religion and to inquisition, to convince and finance his four expeditions in the West Indian Sea. One thing is sure, in only a few decades, the discovery of this «new» continent provoked a true upheaval of the distribution of the European, African and Asian cultures on our planet and the disappearance of many American civilizations. Thus, the colonization policy caused a great mixing of world cultures which gave birth to the Antillean societies. It brings us to the discovery of the history of the families and in particular to those of Saint Martin. Our multiple origins have forged our culture and some of us have long since started to reconstitute their family tree. Heritage, in this edition, proposes to initiate you to the sources of the families’ history by delivering some tips enabling you to have access to the handwritten archive documents required to set up a family tree. On its web site, the Museum already presents the Registry Office records of Saint Martin established between 1773 and 1830.

de 1451. Ses lieux et date de naissance réels portent encore à confusion. La plupart des historiens situent sa venue au monde à Gènes ou Savone, en Italie. Certains parlent de Calvi, en Corse, alors citadelle génoise, ou encore d’une origine catalane. D’autres affirment qu’il est né au Portugal. Cette thèse est d’ailleurs reprise par le cinéaste portugais Manoel de Oliveira, dans son film «Christophe Colomb, l’énigme», sorti fin 2008. Peu de documents ont été recensés, émanant de la propre main de Colomb: quelques lettres, quittances ou annotations dans des ouvrages de sa bibliothèque.

La première virée est loin d’être un succès. En 1476, il souhaite se rendre au Portugal puis en Angleterre, mais son convoi est attaqué par des pirates français et forcé de s’arrêter. Christophe Colomb se rend chez son frère 1450

The first European man in modern history to cross the Atlantic Ocean and to discover a route between the American continent and Europe, Christopher Columbus was born sometime in 1451. His real date and place of birth are still unknown. Most historians place his coming to life in Genoa or Savona, In Italy.

Some speak of Calvi, in Corsica, then a Genoan citadel, or yet of a Catalonian descent.

Others say he was born in Portugal. This idea is taken up by the Portuguese cinematographer Manoel de Oliveira, in his movie «The enigmatic Christopher Columbus», first shown end of 2008.

Few documents have been inventoried, drawn up by Columbus himself: a few letters, receipts or notes in the works contained in his library.

The first outing is far from being a success. In 1476, he wishes to go to Portugal then to England, but his convoy is attacked by French pirates and forced to stop.

Christopher Columbus goes to his brother’s residence in Portugal. In Lisbon, one year later, he marries Dona Felipa Perestrello e Moniz, the daughter of Bartholomew Perestrello, one of the discoverers of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, West of Morocco. His wife dies a little after the birth of his first son, Diego Columbus, in Madeira, where the couple then resides.

After several unsuccessful attempts to obtain financing for his voyage, especially from King John 2nd of Portugal, the admiral finally convinces the King of Spain, Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabelle of Castille to finance his expedition. Après plusieurs essais infructueux pour tenter de faire financer son voyage, notamment auprès du Roi Jean II du Portugal, l’amiral convainc finalement le Roi d’Espagne Ferdinand d’Aragon et la Reine Isabelle de Castille de financer son expédition. Avec les lettres royales en poche, le navigateur se rend dans le Sud de l’Espagne pour recruter des marins et préparer les navires. Le voyage inaugural est le mieux connu des historiens. Le vendredi 3 août 1492, il quitte le petit port, avec trois navires, La Nina (La mignonne), La Pinta (La Fardée) et la caravelle Santa-Maria, à bord desquels ont embarqué 90 marins. Six jours plus tard, une première escale aux Canaries, qui dure finalement 27 jours, permet de réparer les premières avaries.

Pendant cette longue escale imprévue, les marins engagés par Colomb sont inquiets, doutent de la réussite de l’expédition, et demandent des éclaircissements sur le parcours.

Christophe Colomb la baptise du nom du Christ : San Salvador (Guanahani pour les indiens Taïnos) et s’en fait nommer vice-roi et gouverneur général. C’est alors la première rencontre avec la population locale qu’il nomme «Indiens» d’après la conception du continent qu’il croyait aborder. «De mœurs tout à fait primitives, ces gens allaient nus comme au jour de leur naissance. Leur figure était assez agréable, et de traits assez réguliers, quoique que l’extrême grandeur de leur front leur donnât un air étrange et sauvage. Bien conformés, ils étaient de taille moyenne, d’une carnation ferme ; ils avaient le teint olivâtre. Quelques-uns brulés du soleil étaient complètement peint en noir, en blanc ou en rouge.

Friday, August 3rd, 1492, he leaves the small port with three ships, La Nina (the sweet), La Pinta (The Painted) and the caravel Santa-Maria, and 90 sailors. Six days later, a first stopover in the Canary Islands, finally lasts 27 days, and enables to repair the first damages. During this long unforeseen stopover, the sailors hired by Columbus are worried, doubt the mission will succeed, and request information regarding the journey.

He thinks he has reached Mexico, but, lacking provisions, he returns to Cuba, where he teams up with his brother Bartolommeo, that he has not seen for eight years, sent on site by the Sovereign of Spain to bring him provisions using three caravels.

The hurricane season does not spare the ships: six are destroyed, and, with their debris, the sailors build the first ship built in this new world, named «India». In the freshly starting colony, the adventurers, with Pedro Margarita heading them, oppress the Indians, quarrel with the other settlers and take hold of Bartolommeo Columbus’ ships, to leave for Spain. Later, towards the end of the 16th century and early 17th century, settlers coming from Northern Europe (English, French, Dutch) settle for a long period in the West Indies and the «official» writs such as treaties, correspondence and reports of the various governors and commanders are today kept in different archive services the consultation of which can only be carried out on site. Thus, for the French side of Saint Martin, many letters written by its prior leaders are today kept in the departmental archives of Guadeloupe, at Basse-Terre, in the archives of the French Colonies at Aix en Provence or in the National Archives in Paris. In this field of research

into history, once again, Saint Martin suffers from its distance from the authentic sources. The consultation of these archives generates expenses linked to travel and accommodation that they imply. The original documents are in general not accessible to the public. Consultation is carried out on microfilms and requires long hours of research.

In 1996, the Hope Estate Archeological Association had published a «Compendium of Historical Archives regarding the islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy 1717 – 1938» out of print today.

The manuscripts having enabled this edition are however still in the Saint Martin Museum archives and should soon be available for consultation on line in PDF format.

On Sint Maarten, these official documents are kept in the Government Building at the General Affairs Bureau, by Mr Alfonso Blijden in the registers of the Historical Records. Approximately 6000 pages of our common history are preciously preserved in these handwritten registers.

A Saint Martin, les recherches généalogiques sont souvent complexes et nécessitent parfois d’explorer l’Etat Civil d’autres îles de la Caraïbe à cause de l’histoire tumultueuse qui a construit notre société. Deux services sont consultables sur place, à savoir celui de l’Etat Civil situé à l’hôtel de la collectivité à Marigot et le Census Office, situé à gauche de la Sint Maarten University à Phillipsburg. A Marigot, Mme Daniela Richardson, responsable de l’Etat Civil, ainsi que son adjointe Georgette Fleming reçoivent les demandes d’extraits d’actes et effectuent des recherches de filiation sur demande. Les recherches sont effectuées sur place pour les 100 dernières années, mais on trouve à Marigot des registres de la fin du 19ème siècle. Pour les recherches de plus de 100 ans, il faut alors se rendre aux archives départementales de la Guadeloupe. Cependant, depuis quelques semaines, la totalité des registres de l’Etat Civil de Saint Martin de 1773 à 1830 sont consultables en ligne au format PDF. Pour cela, il faut vous connecter sur le site du Musée de Saint Martin, rubrique liens : http:// museesaintmartin.e-monsite.com/ liens.html. Il est assez courant pour les familles de Saint martin d’avoir des ancêtres nés à Sint Maarten et inversement. Les recherches d’actes se font alors au Census Archives, dirigé par Leona Romeo Marlin. On y retrouve toutes sortes d’actes de vente de propriétés, de plantations, d’hypothèques, de contrats de mariage où sont mentionnées toutes les possessions des personnes concernées y compris les esclaves possédés par les maîtres des plantations de sucre. En ce qui concerne l’ascendance d’un ancêtre esclave, en dehors de la transmission orale, il est quasiment impossible pour les populations Antillaises métissées de remonter jusqu’à l’Afrique, les esclaves ne portant que des prénoms ou surnoms sans état civil, lorsqu’ils étaient vendus sur les places publiques de nos îles. Ainsi, leurs descendants se voient parfois privés de branches entières de leur ascendance par la cruauté de la déportation esclavagiste.

La Généalogie à l’heure de l’internet

Afin de matérialiser l’ascendance d’un individu et de pouvoir imprimer un arbre généalogique, il existe divers logiciels payants ou gratuits disponibles en téléchargement sur internet. Heredis est l’un des logiciels payants le plus couramment utilisé. Ces logiciels permettent d’organiser toutes les recherches dans une base de données en y incluant des pièces telles que des extraits d’actes numérisés, des photographies, plans et cartes Cassini. Une fois toutes ces données saisies, un fichier gedcom peut être généré et téléchargé sur des portails de recherche en généalogie tels que Geneanet, Genealogie.com ou Ancestry. Ces sites regroupent des millions d’informations mises en ligne par tous les généalogistes et permettent

de comparer et de compléter un arbre. Ils sont en accès gratuit, mais la consultation de certains documents peut être payante.

De nombreuses familles de Saint Martin et d’autres îles présentent déjà leurs arbres généalogiques sur ces sites. Pour les recherches concernant la Caraïbe, plus particulièrement les îles francophones, le site de Généalogie et Histoire des Caraïbes (G.H.C.) peut être d’une grande utilité. Les historiens généalogistes ont parfois poussé leurs recherches jusqu’en Europe pour déterminer l’origine des premiers immigrants. Enfin, pour les ancêtres originaires d’Anguilla, le site d’Anguilla Genweb Project a déjà posé les bases d’un portail internet qui ne demande qu’à s’étoffer. Les archives départementales de toutes les régions de France, ont démarré la numérisation des fonds d’Etat Civil et des Notaires.

Certains départements ont pris de l’avance et proposent des consultations des actes au format PDF. En ce qui concerne Saint Martin et les Antilles françaises, ce sont les archives coloniales d’Aix-enProvence qui ont la charge de ce travail de mise en ligne. Cependant, les documents concernant l’Afrique du Nord et l’Afrique passent en priorité. En conséquence, il nous faudra encore attendre longtemps avant de pouvoir consulter sans voyager ces précieux manuscrits, sans lesquels, il nous est impossible de retracer notre histoire familiale complète. C’est fort de cette constatation que le Musée de Saint Martin a décidé de prendre les devants et d’offrir à tous les documents déjà copiés et numérisés concernant notre île. L’un de nos projets en 2010 sera de compléter tout l’Etat Civil et les actes Notariés de Saint Martin entre 1830 et 1909.

Chacun l’aura compris, construire son arbre généalogique impose beaucoup de patience et d’embuches. Nous nous employons à les simplifier afin que chacun puisse, avant d’apprendre l’histoire du monde, connaître sa propre histoire familiale qui fait partie intégrante de l’histoire et de la culture de Saint Martin.

There, one can find all sorts of property and plantation sale deeds, mortgages, and marriage contracts in which all the possessions of the concerned persons are mentioned including the slaves possessed by the sugar plantation masters. Regarding the ancestry of a slave ancestor, aside from oral transmission, it is almost impossible for half-caste Antillean populations to go back in time to Africa, slaves only having first names or nicknames without civil status, when they were sold on our islands’ public squares.

Thus, their descendants sometimes see themselves deprived of entire branches of their ancestry through the cruelty of slave trade based deportation.

Genealogy and internet

In order to materialize the ancestry of an individual and to be able to print a family tree, there are several payable or free softwares available for download from the internet. Heredis is one of the most often used payable softwares.

These softwares enable one to organise all the research into a database including in it documents such as digitalized deed extracts, photographs, Cassini plans and maps. Once all this data has been seized, a gedcom file can be generated and uploaded onto genealogical research portals such as Geneanet, Genealogie.com or Ancestry. These web sites group millions of pieces of information

placed on line by all the genealogists and enable one to compare and complete a family tree. They are freely accessible, but the consultation of certain documents may be payable.

Many Saint Martin families and some from other islands already present their family trees on these sites. For research regarding the Caribbean, in particular the French-speaking islands, the Généalogie et Histoire des Caraïbes (G.H.C.) web site can be very useful. The genealogist historians have sometimes pushed their research into Europe to determine the origins of the first immigrants. Regarding Saint Martin and the French West Indies, the colonial archives of Aix-en-Provence are in charge of this work of placing data on line. However, the documents regarding Northern Africa and Africa come first. Consequently, we will still have to wait a long time before being able to consult without travelling these precious manuscripts without which it is impossible for us to retrace our complete family history. Seeing this, the Saint Martin Museum has decided to take the lead and offer the public all the already copied and digitalized documents regarding our island. One of our projects in 2010 will be to complete the uploading onto the Museum web site of all the Registry Office records and Notaries’ deeds of Saint Martin established between 1830 and 1909. It becomes clear that building one’s family tree requires much patience and pitfalls that we try to simplify so that each one of us, before learning the world’s history, may come to know his own family history which is an integral part of the history and culture of Saint Martin.
